- A look at one of the oldest/healthiest malls in Chicagoland. The Harlem Irving Plaza in Norridge, Illinois, AKA the HIP, continues to thrive and reinvent itself after 65 years. This video explores the factors that have allowed the HIP to thrive into 2021 and appear almost unaffected by the problems that have plagued the retail industry in recent years.
This is my first video of a thriving mall, I hope that you enjoy it!

I remember the HIP when Wieboldt’s and Woolworth were there. My mom’s favorite store was William A. Lewis and my brother worked there for a time. I spent my teenage years in Aladdin’s Castle and being a “mall rat” with my friends. I worked across the street in Norridge Commons at Richard Simmons and had friends who worked at Venture. Great mall, great area to grow up.
In my mind, I can still smell the popcorn place as I drop another token into a game at Aladdins Castle. Then off to Gamers Paradise before going home. Stopping at Mr. T's across from Rolling Stones to get a $.99 hotdog and fries special :)
Subdividing the former Carson's space was a smart move. If management had decided to wait for another anchor to take the entire space they'd probably still be waiting.
They have really changed a lot now! I really like the renovation ngl.
It looks really good!!!!
I enjoyed the video very much. I remember the mall in the 1960's when Weibolts was flagship store. That was a very nice store. Three floors possibly 4 with a basement floor. I remember when Walgreens was in the mall. I remember when Rolling Stones was a part of the mall. Jean Nicole was another mall favorite. Casual Corner higher end specialty store for women. I worked at Thom McCann shoe store. Loved Madigans simply loved it. Was happy Carson's came to the mall. With such class and great dresses, shoes, jewelry, men's selection. Housewares and they had so much like a regular department store. I love the HIP and all it has to offer. I do miss Carson's Pirie Scott, Inc.
I am 70+ and grew up with mall. Great documentary.
This Mall seems to do very well! I like how occupied it is. It’s nice to see a place like this trying to bring in business. And not leaving a space vacant for years.
I agree. This mall is doing really well.
My parents and I used to come here all the time when we lived in the city. We lived about two minutes from the mall. I was recently here with my aunt and grandmother, and all I can say is that it has changed a lot since I was last there. It has a new look to it almost. New stores were added, and it seems to have a new atmosphere too
Great video, this place is awesome. I really like the background music that you used. Can't wait to watch another video
Thank You!!!
I found this channel because of the Carson's at Woodmar Mall video that's in my hometown. Now I live in the city and am definitely familiar with this mall. There's a laser tag place right by it that's a lot of fun! The production value and camera steadiness on your videos continues to improve. This was an excellent video. You're doing great! Please keep making more!
Yeah the laser tag is a lot of fun. Been there for a birthday party. I used to go here a TON. We used to go just for the food court sometimes.
Very HIP renovations to say the least
Epic vid as always
Very HIP Indeed. Thanks for Watching!
This is a great video and interesting information about the HIP. I remember making many trips to the HIP for shopping . I also worked at Lasalle Bank bank at the Cicero and Irving park location. going to the HIP for lunch back in 2008. it was quiick and easy to get food and come back . I see it still has people coming and I didnt think Rolling Stone was still there.
Keep the videos coming.
Thank You!
over twenty years ago the food court had a video arcade owned by Namco buy when you didn't have online gaming.
With a lot of community based malls going under this is nice to see
That’s how you tell a malls history replete with illustrations, well done Sir!! 👍
Thank You! That actually took a lot of time.
I’m glad to see this place doing well. Also nice to see some thriving malls on this channel. Would be cool to see other thriving malls.
Maybe. We'll see...
I am from the UK and went on trips to Chicago 4 times between 2002-2004 to visit my then girlfriend and now wife of 21 years. During each trip (usually lasting 2 weeks) we would go into Hip Mall several times. My wife lived in Logan Square and her family are still there but told me its changed a lot. I imagine most of the shops have changed but I remember we would go into a Spencer's Gifts. My wife moved to the UK in 2003, we visited a year later in 2004 but have not been back since, have 3 children so very expensive flights. I would like to go back for nostalgia but fear its not the Chicago I remember. Thanks for posting.
You should definitely go back! I've been living in Chicago since 2021, while things are not perfect it's definitely not earned the reputation it seems to get in the news.
@@LostDepartments We just watched this video - ruclips.net/video/oRSvrZInOEE/видео.html and my wife commented how much HIP Mall has changed. She pointed out the jewellery store near the foot court that we got our wedding rings (different company but same location). There was no upstairs other then parking and there was no Target. My wife does not want to go back and says it would ruin my memory of the Chicago I knew as its all changed. Do you know if there is a shop Spencer's Gifts in HIP Mall still? It sold board games and geeky things.
We used to go to the HIP regularly especially in the 1960’s!! Thanks for the great video!!
I started coming here in 1973 when it was a bustling plaza . Then they built a mall over it. One of the smartest malls around. Very family friendly, the original Walgreens still there and mall expanding, set up so when things fail , quickly replaced . Funny thing is so many people speaking different languages. Spanish, polish, Russian. You can find soccer jerseys there which are hard to find in most stores .
Thanks for sharing another great video! I liked that you showed a thriving mall, you should a thriving mall series. It’s nice to see retail and some malls surviving and doing well.
I Agree! Thanks for watching!
Love this one.
WONDERFUL JOB!!!! I've spent many times here....Thank you for this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a pretty nice mall, I went there last summer!
Fantastic video man
Thank You!
It’s just generally a great place to be at and hang out in.
Went to this mall for many years, another reason they thrive is the area has a very diverse immigrant population, including many Europeans who enjoy the American mall experience.
People who say malls are dead have probably not visited Chicagoland. It's true as a whole they're not doing well throughout the country, but between Woodfield, HIP, Fashion Outlets of Chicago, Gurnee Mills and others they are still going strong in this area.
As a larger market we are fortunate to see some of our malls continue to thrive!
Can’t agree with you more. I was at Harlem Irving Plaza last year with my aunt and grandmother. I used to live two minutes from the mall. It has changed a lot of course when I went there last year. Great mall with great stores. I remember a long time ago when I was little, there was a Walgreens in the mall which was very convenient if you ever needed anything.
The second floor path to hobby lobby is so weird. It’s just a giant carpeted floor with nothing to offer except Hobby lobby, unlike the mall entrance right next to Target, which has clothes displays with bright lights, kids games, candies, and the massage chairs.
THAT'S SO BIG!
Does anyone remember Madigans. That was the it store of the 70s and 80s. The one at Harlem Irving was one of the best. I shopped their all the time. Got my first pair of Parachute pants their. Awesome. I wish Madigans was still around.
Loved Madigans
Really nice place!
I went there since I was a little kid changed a lot
Interesting and smart replacing the usual anchor stores with middle class stores like target and hobby lobby. Perhaps a lesson other malls could learn. Architecture is different but not particularly creative or impressive. A truly impressive mall I’ve seen on RUclips is Woodfield mall. Very impressed with that mall’s architecture and design.
I have a lot of memories of this mall. Most of my memories of this place are great except for one. One of my good memories happened in the early 90's, I was actually on the news there. They were talking to the kids about a toy store that used to be there called KB toys. The one bad memory I have from this mall happened when I was a child in the 80's. They used to have an outdoor parking lot and as you approached the entrance you'd see these huge statues. I think the statues were of gold or bronze horses. As we were walking up to the entrance, we saw a crowd forming. As we got closer there was a small child laying on the ground. Someone had said the child was climbing up to the huge statues to ride them and had fallen off. I'm not gonna scar people with the details but the kid wasn't ok. I tried looking for a pic of the hip from the 80's that showed the statues or an article about it but I couldn't find any.
Not only have i done videos on the H.I.P myself. I'm also on the wall in there on the 60th anniversary tribute wall.
We used to go just for the food court sometimes.
Grew up in that area always a fun time there did a typical kid shenanigans there
I swear it seems that majority of the malls are dead I'm not saying completely tho it's just that people shop online now
Not all are though. The HIP looks like it will be a survivor.
Back in the mid to late 90s there was a restaurant in the mall located near the entrance near Carson Pierre Scott across from where kids would meet Santa/Easter Bunny. Does anyone remember the name of that restaurant? I have a vague memory of it being some kind of deli/sandwich shop at which they also sold cigarettes.
Jan's Deli
This is a place I have been whant ing to see since you made the Carson’s video it’s a cool place a lot bigger than i thought
It feels a lot bigger than it really is!
@@LostDepartments I can see that now from the Carson’s video it seemed pushed together and I Thoght that was it
What happened to Walgreens?
Sounds like something Paulina from Danny phantom would shop at
The HIP is by far my most favorite mall out of the ones in my area (HIP, Golf Mill, Oak Mill "Mall", Old Orchard). It has a nice atmosphere and it's the most active out of these malls (besides Old Orchard). Compared to Old Orchard, it wins. Old Orchard has no atmosphere. It's just a crowded place with stores.
Golf Mill is practically a dead mall now. There’s really nothing there anymore. Sears is gone from there, which makes that a major inconvenience since that was how you got to the other side of the mall. I remember going there when I was little. The mall was always busy, and had great stores. Of course over time it just started to decline for some reason. Part of it of course is the internet.
I didn't even know the mall existed. I thought it was a boring strip mall because of the word plaza.
Are pets such as dogs allowed in here?
Will you make your Face Reveal video?
Hey, how you will reveal your face & name!
Are you gonna make more Toys “R” Us videos?
Toys R Us Is All Gone
@@kyleholbrook1288They are still in Macy's
I love the maps! But I must say this mall is ghetto. I’m 47 and you should have seen it years ago before trash took over. Anyone who went there pre 2000 knows. I won’t enter it now. Trashy! FACT
Wow I learn something new everyday!!! A mall with a 98% occupancy rate in a completely safe area is Ghetto now because minorities and young people shop there??? I guess I'll take you're advise seriously and never step outside my house again so the trash can't offend me by living their lives. /s
now what do you mean by trash?
@@LostDepartments RACIST. And RACIST channel.
@@LostDepartments glad I’m able to give a racist insight. You make me sick!
Shopped there for decades, never found it ghetto. Just very diverse ethnically. Never felt unsafe there.
