I never knew radishes could grow that tall! 😂 I have had people ask me about eating the unripe pods too.. seems like that's a thing! I learned today! Thank you!
Birds haven't bothered them yet as far as I've seen. Although pulling all the seeds out is tedious, I can handle it if I know I'll rarely have to do it haha!
I don't have a bird problem. But I do have a kid problem😂 well me to! I like the pods more then the radish itself. Working in the garden today, I must have had more then 20 by now😄 Still plenty of daylight left🤔
Collecting radish seeds soon so I needed this video. Thank you. I am a curious person and so I really appreciate you breaking open the seed pods during different stages so I don't have to. My radishes are just now flowering. I'm excited 😊
🥰 Hanging mine now. But next year might be a little tough. The pods are so delicious! And I even pickled some with green cherry tomatoes, jalapenos, garlic and some baby cucumbers, all from my garden😊
Oh my gosh I have found a fellow gardener that loves to grow her own seeds like I do I think growing my own radish seeds now for a couple years .Thank you so much I really do enjoy your channel and I know we’re going to be great buddies Isn’t it amazing that beautiful little flowers that are on the radish planned. Go look at my channel and look at all my beautiful seats coming from one carrots I have been doing updates every week . I’m trying to grow a food forest and every year I have plans coming back from year before ,I’ve have my lettuce coming back for a couple years now from past lettuce, I have Swiss chard and coming back for five years now . And of course my radishes have been coming back for several years to .I’m not very good at it yet but I’m sure I’m going to get a lot better as time goes on and I build my soil a better and richer .
Nice to meet you! It looks like you have quite a lot going on in the garden. I'd love to start a food forest too, but since I'm not sure if I'm moving next year I haven't planted anything long term like that. I love your attitude too! We are always getting better over time as we keep trying. :)
Seen a few of your videos now. Keep up the good work. It’s really nice to see a women on RUclips bringing valuable content vs the usual thirstbait ones.
wow! the thing that blows my mind is that the plants are growing up like big pea or bean stalks, i always thought radishes were completely under the ground and ive seen the sprouts on top but if they get hard yellow and pod the seeds then i can replicate more! :D thank you
Thank you for the tips, Miss Rachel! I didn't know whether to leave the whole plant in the ground (a straw bale, in my case) or to hang them to dry. Great to know that either will work!
I was just growing one that broke (the stem) So it can still possibly be dried and harvested? According to the google Germans snack on the pods with beer but it may be a certain type of radish. Thanks
If the pods were fully developed, you could still dry them for seed. They are also edible no matter what variety you have. I have a whole video on ways to eat them if you're interested.
I’m so happy to find you! We are also 7b in small container and raised bed gardening pushing limits but are just learning how to garden! This was such an informative video! I’m so glad I searched about our radish we let go to seed and found you! I look forward to watching more!
Wow i love your way of explaining. Very clear very u understandable. Love how we have the option to cut the mature seed and lay to dry instead of leaving them on the plant to dry.
This has been most helpful , as some of my radishes have gone to seed , flowered & then got pods growing on them . I did wonder if that’s where the seeds formed & you have confirmed that for me . Thank You 😄
Thank you for this really informative video! I have a heap of radish pods in my garden and wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing to save them😊
Thank you looked all over youtube, and this basically showed up on my feed later on. I will have to take a radish, and let it matureto the sate of seed pods, , thank you for the excellence of a perfect video!. thanks
Great how-to mam, I really never thought about letting my radishes go to seed!! Zule mentioned your channel, ya have a new subscriber from east central Mississippi here, thank ya for the share!! Dan
thank you from London. I let one of my red radishes goto flier and bolt. They have flowers now and I was wondering how the seeds were propagating. Still waiting for pods. I hope they goto pod!
@@AuxhartGardening thank you. I just checked this am and I can see the pods forming once the flowers have gone. Yes, there are a lot of flower points so look forward to the process concluding. Something satisfying about collecting the seeds of ones harvest.
New viewer and now subscribed based on this video. I haven't saved radish seeds before. I too have a radish jungle at the moment, but pods are all still green, still on the planted radish plant. Should I cut some branches off the plant and would they mature ok off the plant?
If the seeds aren't fully formed, they won't mature off the plant. I only cut branches off when I'm certain the seeds are fully formed and just need to dry out. If you're feeling unsure, you can definitely just leave the pods to dry on the plant itself to be absolutely sure you're getting mature seeds.
Great video. I’m growing hydroponically indoors, and now I’m wondering about pollination. Will seeds form properly if I shake the flowers around the same way I would on a tomato plant? Also, I’m wondering how long it takes for the entire cycle of planting the seed, growing the radish, and waiting for the seed pods to be ready for harvest.
I don't think radishes work that way. They definitely need other plants to pollinate, but I'm not sure what the hand-pollination strategy would be for something like that. Sorry i can't be more helpful!
How feasible do you think it is for one vegan gardener to feed themselves completely? Or how many gardeners would it take to feed each other in community long term? WAG is good enough.
How long from plant to seed? And how many lots of microgreens would 10 radishes produce say in one year? And do they seed once every year once you’ve picked them off?
Question: where do you keep the germinating seeds, in the sun or it doesn't matter? You are AWESOME! Such detailed information! I am following WITH the bell on...thank you.
I planted in January, and was harvesting these pods in June. It had produced a few earlier than that, but the bulk of them were getting ready near end of June.
i want to figure out how to grow pods to eat we have some 3 foot tall plants that i think were planted either last fall or even last spring. Made me wonder if you get more pods by waiting for the second year?
Hello Respected Ma'am I am from Saudi Arabia I want to ask you that these redish seeds you have extracted I also have plants, so cut the seeds that have emerged on them and dry them. Or should I leave it on top of the plant so that it dries here, what do you recommend?
Thank you so much! I wonder if the radish is still in optimal condition to harvest at this “late” stage, or does the flavor and size fade after flowering and producing seeds 🤔
What varieties do you collect seeds from? I've heard radishes are biennial but it sounds like you're collecting seeds just a few months after planting in the same season/year, which is why I'm asking lol I want to be planting those then lol (So far Cherry Belle is my favorite!) Thank you so much!!!!
Good question! This one is a black spanish radish. Most common radish varieties are annual, with a few of the larger ones being biennial as you mentioned. You should be able to figure out which is which via google searches.
I just watched Zule's video about the tag you sent to her. I've given you a sub & ( number 13 like) as well and look forward to seeing what's happening in your garden. Take care from Laura in Ontario, Canada
Do you just leave them in the soil to keep growing for the pods? Like carrots? My first time growing a garden, trying to save money on groceries and have fresh veggies all the time. And I love radishes. Can you eat the young pods right off the vine?
I just harvested a bucket of my seeds but they all appear to be very dull in color, mostly grey. Nice n hard to the touch, but off color. Ideas? thanks for the excellent clip
While you were testing the germination rates, did you have to rewet the paper towel at all in those three days, or does it stay damp enough? Also where did you store them while you waited?
This year I will leave one plant in ground for seed saving! We eat radish’s leaves also so while I will let the plant grow for seed, can I harvest leaves in between?
I haven't eaten them, mostly because they tend to be kind of rough/spikey as far as leaves go. But I'd assume they taste similar to the pods, which is a mild radish flavor.
very helpfull ty, also vert very nice to hear a video thats so helpfull without annoying music in the background
Glad it was helpful!
Yes and I love how natural the video feels, not over produced. Thanks Auxhart!
I never would've thought to test to make sure seeds would germinate before storing them away until next year. Such a good idea!
Thanks! I was mildly worried I was picking them too early, so that seemed like a good way to test that they were actually ready.
I never knew radishes could grow that tall! 😂 I have had people ask me about eating the unripe pods too.. seems like that's a thing!

Love saving radish seeds. You can get a lifetime supply in one year if you can stop the birds from eating them.

Thanks for pointing out the stages. Mine are still at the green stage so I’ll wait a bit longer.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you ever so much!

I Didn't know we could eat the pods. very informative and thank you! I usually sauté the leafs et cetera. Thanks again
Glad to know I can go ahead and remove them and let dry until ready to get the seeds out
Yep! Pretty easy.
It’s so nice to meet you. It’s cool to see how viable the radish seeds are. I grew Dino kale and the pods are empty.
Welcome! Nice to meet you too! That's strange about the kale... I don't have any good answers for that unfortunately.

Fantastic job on the vid! Just what i needed to know !
Very good information. I tried to save seeds last year and it worked thank you
Good to hear!
Very informative video. Thank you so much! I'm going to go clip some of those stems off and dry those pods. Thanks 👍

Thank you for sharing that! You did a great job explaining the process!

Well done. Very pleased to learn this information. New subscriber.
thank you for information, so if i just leave it on the ground to dry out, then i shouldn't water them anymore, right? thanks. love your video.

Thanks! That's a good idea, especially when saving for many years at a time.
Thank you! Super helpful.

Could you leave them on the plant over winter? Then just take off the plant and put in the ground next spring?
Sometimes this works. You might find they have a tendency to mold though, but it depends a lot on what your climate is like.
Question: where do you keep the germinating seeds, in the sun or it doesn't matter?
You are AWESOME! Such detailed information! I am following WITH the bell on...thank you.
For drying, the sun is okay, but for long-term storage you want to keep your seeds in a cool, dark place. And THANK YOU!
The germinating seeds in the plastic bag are better kept in the dark (to simulate being in the soil).

@@AuxhartGardening you’re welcome. What are your tips for growing less spicy bulbs? If there are any.
Just wondering, once you gather the seeds, does it matter what you store them in? Like a plastic bag, or a jar for example. Thanks :)
As long as it is sealed and dry and protected from UV light, it shouldn't matter.
While you were testing the germination rates, did you have to rewet the paper towel at all in those three days, or does it stay damp enough? Also where did you store them while you waited?
I sealed the bag so I didn't need to re-wet it. I just put them on my desk in my room if I remember correctly.
