Yes it’s very flat and boring from Carlisle but once the mountains and hills were in sight the trip picked up. Ive only used the Co-Op in Dalston too and the public toilets 😂 and yes the people around that area are lovely your right. Missed your dog, on the trip, hope he’s alright 👍
Not my usual type of video to watch but 5 hours later im glued and also inspired to get out walking more even though my right ankle is a nightmare. Also look forward to some good gate action
Enjoyed walking with you. A little tip…never throw away a plastic bag like the coop one. So many uses…collecting hedgerow fruit, (if 2) to cover footwear when encountering a field gate with deep silage mud pool the other side or crossing stream to keep feet dry. If twisted are fairly strong like short rope. So…never throw away a plastic bag ;-)
Originally a Midlander, I have lived in many areas of the UK, and while I think Northerners are the most friendly, patriotic and indeed, sensible, they do moan for fun. Curiously it is amusing to listen too.
Keep the gate shots! These videos are so soothing, all the greenery is great for the psyche. I'd steer clear of the steer too. If I may, throw in a few detail shots like of those buttercups, or some of the signs, and hold on those stone ruins. I'm a yank in the desert and those details would be interesting. Keep up the excellent work, you are much appreciated!
I think diet plays a massive part in our health and we are all so different, I too am low carb almost carnivore and it has made such a difference with my ibs and imflamation problems so yes the ultimate elimination diet to see how your body reacts, Jordan Pieterson cured all his pain on Carnivore so it does work, bit we are all different, I wish you luck on your journey
Completely agree about the low carb / carnivore approach. You can split the Ibuprofen away and just get on with your life. Also gets rid of the energy highs and lows. You should be able to go longer without fatigue. Be ideal for someone in your line.
Love watching your videos, very relaxing and funny. I used to live in Wigton, a few miles away from Calbeck there. The path you walked around hesket and caldbeck was my stomping ground when I used to walk my collie dalmation cross. Lost him in January unfortunately, but we had a good 12 years together. Miss him every day but looking to get another at the end of the season here. Get yourself up to mine on the isle of mull in scotland, gorgeous place to live and explore.
Just come across your channel as I’m big in to hiking and I’m watching Cumbria way videos at the moment. Videography is great and you’re really warming to the viewers, just subscribed :)
Discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it. It’s so therapeutic watching your videos whether it’s camping out or doing trips in your van with the doggy. It’s inspired me to get out more, I live in the highlands of Scotland and the views up here are mind blowing along with the trails. I feel like I take them for granted. You’d love it up this way with the cairngorms and the dava way. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
You made the right choice with those cows. I almost became a statistic myself a few years back when I first started walking. I walked straight through a herd on a disused trail, thinking they'd be docile, and nearly got trampled by 30 head of angry cattle. I have a healthy respect for them now, and I'm not ashamed to admit: a little fear. I give them all the space I can. 'Don't beef with the beef.'
Loved this, so detailed as you talk about the route the countryside, paths and everything you see, almost felt like I was with you.. Can't wait for part 2...
Brilliant video. Loved it. As for the closing of gates....i love seeing all the gates / stiles as it helps me determine if its a walk i can do with my dog. I have a greyhound and they cant get over stiles. They are awkward dogs 😂 So seeing if there are stiles or preferably gates is a great aspect of your videos for me xxx
The Cumbria Way made such a big impact on my life. Near enough 20 years ago, I walked it with my Grandad and finished at Carlisle and we walked down the street at 7:25. Little did I know that in 2016 I would go on to meet a girl from Carlisle and have our first date in Dalston. 2019-2022 we even lived on that very street; the same street I walked down many years before!
I love the sounds of the gates opening and clacking shut. I love everything about your vids. I went to uni in Carlisle so brought back some memories. Wish id done more walking when i was living up there. 🤦♀️
Loved the Gladiator reference - very subtle! Enjoyed watching the start from my hometown in Carlisle - never done most of that walk so very interesting. Looking forward to part 2 👍
New to the channel. Really enjoyed your laid-back narration. You have a very soporific voice, which made it so relaxing. Thanks for taking us along on such a beautiful hike.
Me and 4 mates once decided to go for a walk, we got a lift to Ulverston and walked home to Carlisle in 2 days! We spent the night in pre pitched tents at a campsite in Borrowdale! Look back now with fond memories but we suffered, big time, for a few days after 🤣
Great video, looking forward to watching subsequent episodes. Love this party of Cumbria and the Back o Skiddaw.... Not well trodden. Easy to find your own space away from the crowds.
I love your videos. :) You do such a wonderful job of making your audience feel a part of your journey. Most of the time I’m sitting here saying “Awww, I wanna go too.” In my American accent, of course.
Amazing! I've been looking forward to this one but I thought it'd be next year! Can't wait to watch the whole thing (I'm 6 seconds in) and fingers crossed I'll be doing it from Carlisle to Ulverston next summer.
I was born in Workington, my family had a fish n chip shop in Cockermouth (or maybe Workington), and we used to live in Eaglesfield. Primary school was Paddle school. Not been back there for over 40 years. One of the reasons I watch your videos is to keep a connection.
I preferred starting at Carlisle and as home for me then was Keswick I even got a cuppa on the way past. Enjoyed the views shall catch your other walking days too. Brilliant video.
Love all your videos, liking these long distance walks too..keep the gate shots in I like em, its very much a part of walking in the hills. Love to see you walk the coast to coast , st bees to Robin hoods bay. Also the Dales way would be a good one for yea, you could train it to Ilkley and then walk all the way back to the lakes. All the best !
Hi Glenn , new subscriber here , been binge watching your videos for last couple of months, love your content, personality and you have such a great voice and happy attitude to life , keep them coming maybe we'll bump in to you one day in those amazing fells , Thanks for all those descriptive walks, gear tech etc always looking forward to what you bring us next Cheers from a Yorkshireman
That was really excellent. I had to chuckle at the cow paintings around the bed there. Coming from Hertfordshire, you forget there are places with virtually no one living there. It's a wonderful thing.
Brilliant! I've been enjoying watching your videos for a while now, and they're so inspirational. I also find them really therapeutic, especially when the weather is so grim and I can't get out on the fells as much as I'd like....well I can, but would rather go out in dry weather! I did the Cumbria Way in May 2020 (just after lockdown restrictions had been lifted) and when the weather was absolutely glorious for weeks! I did Ulverston to Keswick then Carlisle back to Keswick with my husband being my taxi service. Sounds a but weird, but I live in Thornthwaite, and like you, I felt I wanted to finish in my home town. It's a brilliant walk and I'm really enjoying re-living it. I love the detail you put into your walks and your brilliant commentary. Really looking forward to part two...just a shame about the rain😕
Hi Glenn. Brilliant mate. I did the CW a few months ago. Loved this final section as it was for us. We heard so many stories of how it was dull and boring and it was non of that. And I can concure the steak pie in Oddfellows is mega! 😋😋 Looking forward to the rest of your journey. All the best Dave
Great video 😍 and I have no problem watching gates being opened and closed, it’s all part of the walk after all. I’ll be interested to hear how you rate your new shoes. I bought the Hoka Anacapa 2 walking boots about 3 months ago and have worn them well in, I absolutely love them! They’re incredibly comfortable and (so far 🤞🏻) waterproof even after going through lots of fields of long, wet grass. I understand the whole thing about cows and horses, love them to look at but I always avoid them if at all possible. Really looking forward to the next instalment 😊
Loving it so far Glenn, I can understand your cow diversion, I've had the pleasure of being chased by about 15 young bullocks, did I run. lol. The route following the river is lovely, Looking forward to your day 2 trip.😜👍
Blimey Glenn you've got me diving for the long distance walk books here. Once the Wainwrights are done its a must for me to do one of these. Cracking watch and the pie looked great. The statistician in me would love an end of journey tally of all the gates passed through. Film em all as far as I care 😅
Love watching your videos but this one is iespecially nteresting I was born in Carlisle and spent my 18th birthday at the Oddfellow Arms I no longer live in the area but so it's always been a walk I fancied doing lots of familiar areas. Looking forward to watching the rest if the walk always a pleasure to join your walks, and good to see the Oddfellows still going strong. 😊
Great part 1, I live where you mentioned the weir 8 minutes in, airy that part of the Cumbrian Way to Dalston and back, you’ve gave me food for thought carrying beyond Dalston now 😂 The factory you went passed and said it gives you the creeps is a mill, Dtead Mcalpins that print fabrics for John Lewis
Lovely walk! We enjoy the gates, they are all different, and those you step over are somewhat exciting, because we never know what the landing will be: wet, dry, rocky…😁 As for the large critters, 🐄🐴we would go around them as well. While they are lovely to look at, the thought of being kicked or chased does not interest us. (My hubby noticed the picture of the musk ox 🐃over your bed- you just could not avoid the big game!🤭) We are looking forward to the next walk, which was probably quite miserable for you, unless the rain did not arrive. We know but scenery will be gorgeous. Thank you for these walks. We live across the pond, so it is lovely traveling with you in different places! We hope you hip is doing better, and the arthritis has eased up. We really enjoy your speaking to us as though we were there, we laugh when you do, enjoying your comments..
Not a hiker (or wasn't) till finished coast to coast couple weeks ago, wanted a challenge after turning 50, 13/14 kg pack, no map, 35 extra miles taking wrong trails in 14 days, 1st 5 days 23/25c, blisters day 1, new boots not broken in, ended up losing toenail. No regrets loved it
Thanks for the compliment, I do think us West Cumbrians are a friendly bunch. Only thing is when we venture out of West Cumbria we still think we can say hiya to everyone, just ends up being a bit awkward 😂
Good evening Craig Thank you for a very long walk my feet hurts just watching it with lovely view never been there before looking forward to the next walk with you Craig have a good evening Trace 😊
Really enjoyed that! Great to see the railway station at Grange, the starting point of a number of Coast to Coast bike rides that I have done. Lovely walking along the river, shame about the cows! 🙂
Having recently finished walking from Hessle (Humber Bridge ) to Filey, Wolds Way about 80 miles, great views of the dry valleys. I love your walking and commentary. A good inspiration to all of your viewers. Cheers for the 1st vid and looking forward to the next 4. My wife has tried to convince me about not eating carbs.I may well give that a go. As for the cows, man up is my suggestion, show them who is the boss.
My legs really ache after that walk I said to my partner last night............. having watched it with a bottle of wine 😂. We were right there with you! Love the filming, views, gates and stiles. Looking forward to the next vlog 🥾🥾
Great video, looking forward to the rest, we camped at the caldbeck campsite, the farmer told us to just follow the cumbria way route rather than the diversion, few trees down but passable
Wow you hit the nail on the head. I’m 66 and have proven to myself it’s the carbs and sugar. I can even jump with no problem on the knees now, go up and downstairs with ease. Also stretching is another cure, as all our tissues become almost glued. I walk at least 22,000 steps in a day, so it’s not age . Love the video so far, and it’s 19* degrees right now in Costa Rica, and still too warm
Definitely need more of these adventures Glenn, the multi-day series are excellent. Surprised you didn’t have a few protein bars in your pack to keep the energy up……presume you didn’t want the weight. Great vlog pal as always 👊🏻
Hi Glen 😊 great to see you! Was scanning RUclips lol 😂 thinking where has he gone lol 😂 I technically had you on the missing list since Sunday! 🤣…….what a stunning walk just breath taking nature/views! Loving the gate shots! More gates please lol 😂 seriously it adds to the character of your vlog gives and idea how far you actually hike! Sorry to hear you toe is painful arthritis is so painful 😣 when you said “oh I was wondering if I might have to give this channel up” I nearly had panic Attack 🤣🤣🤣 (from a completely selfish point of view of course) my mind went ok get the toe pain so can we please have camper van channel then 🙏 I know you would be heartbroken if you couldn’t do your hikes and so would we but we here I’m sure we’re take what we’re given and what’s best for you….diet plays major part in arthritis so your on the right track!…… lol 😂 fell on the floor 🤣🤣 to “hope the person who has the horse 🐴 is out riding it” haha 😂 I know your fear of cows me and my dog got stuck on a brook bridge cows either side my dad wondered where I was thank goodness he came out looking for us no mobile phones at the time! Scary 😟 Your accommodation is fab very sensible! Looking forward to your next vlog take care 💙
Great video, I've done the Cumbria Way in both directions and have to say I enjoyed doing it in reverse. It was also great leaving my car at a relatived in Ulverston and being able to just drive home, genuinely lovely route, enjoy 👍
Loved this ❤ and can't believe we was so close to you.. we were at Sebergham the same day staying in an airbnb, was going to go to Caldbeck but changed our minds 😮 I'm gutted now I know you were there would of been lovely to meet you ❤
im 65 and a retired countryside ranger i suffer with arthritis in both feet so i can not walk big distances. But since reducing carbs like you its much improved. Plus 3 table spoons of extra virgin oil first thing .
I wish I had done the Cumbria Way in reverse too. That last day into Carlisle was so boring! Thanks for a trip down memory lane though, I look forward to the next day (might it rain? 😂)
As a sidenote. Why the dislike of Horses/Cows in fields Glenn? I've been on one walk where 2 horses flanked me either side as I crossed their field, and a few others where I've gathered a good number of cows following me. They were really awesome moments. :-) Oh I spoke too soon...your story has started..... Ahhh Finn was with you. That's probably why. I would of gone straight through them! Although I lived on a Dairy farm until about 10 yrs old so kinda grew up with them.
Fantastic! Thank you once again for a great video. Wonderful to see you back doing your stuff😊 Looking forward to the next part of the walk, I was done in just watching it 😂
Dude!! I implore you, on behalf of everyone who follows you religiously & genuinely enjoys every video you make, PAHLEEZ, don't give up the channel!! That being said, your health comes 1st & foremost so you have to do what's right for you. However, you had issues with your Achilles a while back & you prevailed over that so hopefully this will be the same. To echo the consensus in the comments, please don't edit out gate closing. It adds to the atmosphere & it serves as a reminder to "Close the frikkin' gate, it's there for a reason!" As for our bovine planet sharers, they deserve respect. They have feelings & emotions like every other creature & I am sure not too many people would appreciate a random stranger just walking thru their front door, loitering around their living room gawping at them, dumping a load of garbage & then just walking out. A pasture/field is their living room - having some respect. Not you personally of course lol. Thank you for another awesome video & thank you for sharing with us. You are appreciated as is all your effort, time & hard work in creating them.
Two of my main walks I do in Kent entail walking through a herd of cows the other one a herd of bulls. They’re very inquisitive especially of my dog. I keep my dog close on a lead the cows do tend to surround us but we just push on through and I talk to my dog, I have to admit it is a bit unnerving. As with the bulls they sometimes follow us but not surround us, I put my hand up and shout stop at them they do tend to stop and wait.
I for one can`t get enough of the gate opening/closing scenes, though if Kubrick did it then he would add a bit of drama to it but at my age I prefer the gentle klinking/klanking of a latch. Iam planning to do the CW at some point at least before I turn 60 but now you have given me a quandary, North to South or South to North. Thanks for sharing.
Just discovered your channel - I think I completed the CW just a few weeks before you. I skipped that section where you're literally on an overhang above the Caldew in the trees. Looked too sketchy walking in the opposite direction. Enjoyed following your day anyway and will be watching the rest of the Cumbria Way series and your other stuff. All the best
It’s weird knowing it’s not Sunday and watching you but after what I’ve just had to listen to I can safely say your a breath of fresh air 🤣🤣🤣 ( think I found the worlds worst loud mouthed handyman and I don’t mean bad language 🤦♀️🤦♀️)
Many years ago we were taking a short cut across a field in Cumbria that had a few cows in it. As soon as one mounted another we thought it was a bull and turned around and went back to take the long way round to where-ever it was we were headed, probably a pub.
Brilliant video Totally makes sense the idea of walking home! I am local to this end of the Cumbrian way. I just want to recommend the butchers in Dalston. It’s pretty good and there may have even stuff like sausages ready to eat.
Fab vid Glenn. Have been looking forward to this. Im terrified of cows. Ive been known to add miles onto my hikes to avoid them 😂. Its cool to see where we knew you were walking. Very pretty scenery sometimes we get to preoccupied with getting up high and to the popular places. If you liked that, may I suggest the walk alongside the River Eden from Kirkby Stephen, its stunning. Its the Westmorland Dales, I did it and followed the C2C route upto 9 Standards Rigg.. absolute belting walk for scenery ( if a lil boggy higher up ). Cant wait for the next installment. Thanks for making my evenings entertainment, always makes me smile. Will watch on Patreon when its out. Ps- My right hip was smashed in when I was training for ahalf marathon, got taken out by a 4x4 truck. I have osteo arthritis now, it hurts when I do miles on the flat and I get relief by going uphill. Take care pal. Ange😁🤟
Filming shutting gates actually equals… perfect etiquette..and covering your ass in case of possible livestock problems once you’ve gone. 👍👍 I’m very local to this video, great to see it. Very enjoyable. 😊👍
I did that from the other end to end but used the Sherpa Van Company to transport our luggage everyday to the next hotel, well worth it. left us to carry water waterproofs and packed lunches.
Would have done exactly the same regarding the cows. Just not worth the risk. Love your opening and closing gate footage. Feels like you are on the walk and highlights good practice. Hope your toe holds out.🤞🤞 Very interesting how much nutrients and diet impacts the body. Also, I have same issue walking on flat ground for too long. Overall you have covered many subjects!
Did the Cumbrian way south to north in 2010 (camped) sample many pubs especially the one in Hesketh Newmarket with cracking beers named after the fells.
Great stuff, I always look forward to your vids. You’ll have to let us know how you find the Hoka’s. Sadly, I didn’t get on with them - I always seemed to get lower back pain whenever I wore them.
Great Video Glen, i have the same problem with my left big toe, i was advised to try Jamaican dark castor oil, ( Just rub it in) amazed it works for me, can aslo be used for a multitude of things.
I feel the same about going through cow fields. I got charged by a Hurd once and surrounded by them all, really close. I shouted and waved but I couldn’t get out of it. Luckily the farmer heard me and came to the rescue. Said they could have trampled me easily. Now they make me so nervous.
Yeah I’m wary of cattle after an experience with a herd of frisky bullocks.. I would have diverted too. It’s amazing how cattle congregate around the gates you need to pass!
Loved th video!! Cowversion was an interesting move!! I will buy to a pint for that !! Very sensible as 40 plus people die a year trampled by them but I can't help thinking there must be a better way of going through them without upsetting the cows and being trampled. The farmers all seem to take a stick a with a loud noise move through but there must be some science or a protocol around this!!? I have four dogs so yes I put them on a lead but the cows are always bloody inquisitive!! Run Forrest run!! lol
One of my regular walks entails walking through herds of cows the other walk is through a herd of bulls. The cows are very inquisitive especially with my dog they always surround us but I keep telling my dog to keep moving as we press on through the cows I have to admit it is a bit unnerving at times. As with the bulls if they follow us I tend to put my hand up a shout stop they do stop dead and we carry on walking
Funny mentioning arthritic big toe. I'm a big walker (10-20km per week), similar build and age to you and both mine were x-rayed and showed signs of osteoarthritis. I haven't tried a low/zero-carb diet though, so cheers for that.
Well done Sir, I for one vote for plenty more gate opening shots, they add to the immersion of a walk in the countryside. Top job as always.

Fully understand and respect your decision to go round the cows.
Blimey Glenn you've got me diving for the long distance walk books here. Once the Wainwrights are done its a must for me to do one of these.
Cracking watch and the pie looked great. The statistician in me would love an end of journey tally of all the gates passed through. Film em all as far as I care 😅
Love it Glenn - we did this about 10 years ago and it was amazing
I thought that Musk Ox picture over the bed was a Scottish Highland Coo 😂
@@LindaOvenstone-hg3gl My bad! I’m from America and was unaware of this…but it is still a big critter😀!
brill video glen:), top effort and brilliant video, genuinely feels like your talking to me in these videos now:)
No regrets loved it
Hi Glenn, love your videos feels just like we are walking alone with you. I too fall apart walking on the flat yet ease over fells
Thanks for the compliment, I do think us West Cumbrians are a friendly bunch. Only thing is when we venture out of West Cumbria we still think we can say hiya to everyone, just ends up being a bit awkward 😂
Good evening Craig
Thank you for a very long walk my feet hurts just watching it with lovely view never been there before looking forward to the next walk with you Craig have a good evening Trace 😊
His names Glenn 🤗
Love your videos you just keep doing you, talk as much as you want I think your great ❤
Great video, looking forward to the rest, we camped at the caldbeck campsite, the farmer told us to just follow the cumbria way route rather than the diversion, few trees down but passable
Really enjoyed this. Thank you.
So glad you mentioned the diet as it resonates with me, cheers pal 👍
Scary 😟
Your accommodation is fab very sensible! Looking forward to your next vlog take care 💙
Lovely video Glenn, looking forward to the next one.
Walking on the flat is a killer! Loving this vid!
Ooo the journey begins. Looking forward to these videos after the mini updates on Patreon.
Brilliant can't wait for the rest xx
Fantastic! Thank you once again for a great video. Wonderful to see you back doing your stuff😊 Looking forward to the next part of the walk, I was done in just watching it 😂
Lovely 😊 I like seeing the gates!
You are appreciated as is all your effort, time & hard work in creating them.
love the gate openings and I feel your pain with the cows - the amount of detours I have had to make to avoid them!
It looks a decent walk, I may try it in the future 👍
Many years ago we were taking a short cut across a field in Cumbria that had a few cows in it. As soon as one mounted another we thought it was a bull and turned around and went back to take the long way round to where-ever it was we were headed, probably a pub.
Brilliant video
Totally makes sense the idea of walking home!
I am local to this end of the Cumbrian way.
I just want to recommend the butchers in Dalston.
It’s pretty good and there may have even stuff like sausages ready to eat.
Love videos like this one Glen
Also a good reason for doing the walk in reverse is you get the most beautiful areas as you travel further into it
Love the homage to gladiator 😂
Ange😁🤟
I have the same problem with my toe .I make sure I get trail shoes with rock plates these days, this does help me.
Relatively new to the channel but absolutely love your videos bud
Great Video, I would really enjoy seeing you do the Coast to Coast.
Did you mention that it might rain tomorrow🤔.
Loved the walk - thank you
Filming shutting gates actually equals… perfect etiquette..and covering your ass in case of possible livestock problems once you’ve gone. 👍👍
I’m very local to this video, great to see it.
Hallo. I watch your vidios always from Norway. Very interesting.🤠👍
Did the Cumbrian way south to north in 2010 (camped) sample many pubs especially the one in Hesketh Newmarket with cracking beers named after the fells.
Love Caldbeck, spent a few weeks already staying there. Oddfellows Arms staff very friendly and nice beer.
Great stuff, I always look forward to your vids. You’ll have to let us know how you find the Hoka’s. Sadly, I didn’t get on with them - I always seemed to get lower back pain whenever I wore them.
That beer looks so yummy!
Great video mate! Totally agree re cows. Lost our vet as she was trampled on by cows bless her.
