Remember there is no "universal" camouflage. Terrain matters as does time of year. Use of tarps can be improved by creating ragged, irregular edges. Reversible camo wear with 2 different patterns can be handy. Using natural materials means using grass in grasslands but get leaves once in woods. Very easy to forget. Lastly moving using terrain means never walk on ridge tops and avoiding open areas whenever possible. All those terms are actually important to remember and analyze with each element in mind: line/shape/color/value (dark-light)/texture/shine or light absorbancy/edges. You can be perfectly camouflaged but if your tracks are obvious you're done. Be aware of the trail you leave behind. One final tip: creating a false target by making obvious trails leading to a poorly camouflaged site showing some gear and dummy body can also draw attention away from you. Sorry to lecture but I assure everything listed is critical.

mmm not so sure about that claim anymore, no universal camo...the invisibility cloaks that work by diffraction are pretty much universal, they work in any terrain . Then there's new super low transmittance black substances, like Vanta black, on a dark moonless night a suit made of that stuff would be a rapist's wet dream, I suppose.

Having served in the army I can attest that most units will leave their camo netting packed up out of sheer laziness. The artillery unit I served with set the standard for putting up the camouflage nets within minutes of setting up, but we had to kick some butts to make sure it happened every time.
It might depend on where you are. In 29 Palms camo netting meant shade and got setup as quickly as possible every time.
When I was in 1Cav Div, we went to NTC 3 times a year, always had woodland camouflage, we still set it up where ever we set up. I was chemical, so we moved our vehicles quite a bit. Wish I had some of those nets, spreaders and poles not. It would work great here in SW IL!

That particular fact never happened, he was using an amalgam of many events.
Your statement "Be harder to kill than the next guy" really was light bulb moment for me . Up until now I have had a attitude that you can't hide from the best technology , but now I am thinking that the harder you are to find the more closely "they" have to look and the less area you can cover in the same amount of time . So it does make sense to do something even if it's not perfect.
You don't have to run faster than the bear, just faster than the slowest guy.
Giving up before the fight begins is always the best result for the enemy.

On civilian vehicles: I had the good fortune to observe the Jordanian Air Force camouflage all their shiny colorful fire trucks. They just pulled one truck off the road and created a huge mud hole. Troops got busy getting their trucks as filthy as possible. Clean a tiny spot for the driver to see, park it in the sun to dry and voila! Perfect color match to the terrain.
It worked extremely well.

Well, that was back in the 80s - I found them competent and enthusiastic. Everything was high tempo and they maintained the pace.
Fighter pilots considered knocking over tents great sport, so yeah, they were a little nuts.
The food at the enlisted mess was AWFUL. We were begging for a C-ration drop the first day there.
Nothing really out of the ordinary. At the time, we were pretty closely allied with Jordanians - I never heard any doubts expressed about them.
The FOOD, though! Dear lord. But the tea was excellent.

I remember reading a German soldiers account of the Battle of Normandy, where the Allies had overwhelming air superiority. The Germans would remain under cover on clear days. In order to move they would have spotters radio in when there were no allied planes in the vicinity. Then they would quickly go from one covered position a short distance to the next. Repeat the same aircraft check via spotters, do the quick move to the next covered position. They could cover the same march three times as fast at night, 2/3's as fast when it rained because all weather capability wasn't a thing in WW2. For transporting fuel to the front they used what they referred to as a Scuttle Bug. Literally, a Volkswagen Beetle with the side doors removed. If an allied aircraft attacked them, rather than stop and get out, they dove out to the side ditch while the Bug kept rolling along getting strafed.
Another thing from WW2, decoys, literally scarecrows for drones. If you can stick a mannequin sniper on the rooftop of a neighbor you don't happen to like, you can go about your daily business in peace while your adversary is preoccupied attacking his own natural allies.
Or a group of mannequins not wearing masks.

My granpa worked for the Finnish DOD during winter and continuation wars. During the june 1944 offensive he was tasked to the front to evacuate wounded and dead troops. The soviet air force would shoot his truck even if it had red cross markings. First granpa would stop and hide under the truck but after witnessing an airplane cannon shell going thru the engine block he removed the door and would just dive into a ditch
If you see a plane that's camouflaged, it's British.

Served for 22 years in the military; armor & mech infantry (72-94). Your discussions of threat and the critical use of camouflage jumped off the screen for me! Extremely relevant. Further, it provided a somewhat current sense of the state-of-the-art for surveillance in our communities in this worsening big brother environment. Be invisible. That was always true. More importantly, follow the laws of God.

I fly Drones for the Dod / Army in an OPFOR role. A visual sensor UAS is not super difficult to hide from, a low resolution thermal sensor is also not that difficult to hide from if you have adequate concealment (IE a tree top canopy that is holding heat from the sun, especially during the day, but even at night time, the canopy holds heat pretty well).. the issue is when you get into hiding from systems that have more advanced thermal signature capabilities, like a 640 resolution thermal sensor.. there's not a whole lot you can do to hide from these.. But you CAN evade them with the right environment and gear. Things like cold weather insulating clothing tends to help quite a bit against letting heat out, as well as the new thermal resistant poncho's that the Army is coming out with... Thermal reflective emergency blankets can work in a pinch provided that you don't leave them against your body for too long, your heat will eventually transfer over to it and cause you to show up as well. "tarping" a couple ponchos between trees and hiding behind them is a good way to avoid detection, or if you're in a Desert setting, laying down next to large rocks that have been absorbing the desert sun all day will make a huge difference in concealing your signature.

One thing that wasn't mentioned. If you've had to use your weapon cover it quickly or that gun will show up quickly with a tell,tell white signature. So you may be in a ghille suit so pull your weapon under you or wrap it with no part exposed. Even when you can't see the drone it can be high up. Don't take a chance.
I find it interesting that there were several incidents of drones flying near commercial jets which mysteriously stopped when the FAA banned the use of drones within 5 miles an airport pretty much making all civilian drone use in NYC illegal, only for the NYPD to catch someone on a rooftop playing with an airsoft gun... with a drone.

Good practical advice. After seeing a coordinated drone swarm at the opening ceremonies of one of the Winter Olympics. I saw the terrifying possibilities of small drone weapons. The fictional use in the movie “Angel has Fallen” felt very realistic.

Yeah. You can do that easily with fpv drones. They can go 80-140mph+, can maneuver better than any aerial aircraft if it's a quad fpv drone. I've told my friend for years that fpv drones have incredible military applications and I'm surprised we don't see any fpv drones being used. When I saw Angel Has Fallen I was like that's what I'm talking about lol.
You never know, knowing how to hide from drones may one day become invaluable to each and every one of us.

Great stuff. You did a good job of starting the conversation on Camo. I want to especially thank you for pointing out the tracks or wheel marks on the terrain. another easy way to find positions is that people run their vehicles to stay warm, which heats up the vegetation. Also, at night, one can follow the heat signature of wheels and/or tracks upon roads for several hours so selecting one’s night position well in advance of sundown is moi important.
Knowing what your up against is huge. Aside from some military folks, the people I've come in contact with that are most familiar with concealment are weed growers. In talking with a few different grow op managers they would absolutely be the people to put up effective concealment. In observing LE attempts to surveil the ops I was pretty impressed with the thought that some of the growers put into how they configured their grows to control what is shown and what is concealed.
Even some of the older books knew a lot about keeping things unseen in the woods and indoor.
And yet those growers are dumb enough to show an outsider who could be interrogated to where they are. Nah I'll pass.

I saw a video where a guy took heat reflective material - like a space blanket - and sewed it with some polyester batting to a cammo tarp material into poncho-like ghillie suit. The reflective material kept his heat signature from showing and didn't cost much to make. With a hood and using foliage and terrain was invisible at night thermally and to the eyes.

The under garments a Firefighter typically wears (thick leather coated with reflective material), are sold at some Military Surplus stores and works well for the base layer for what you're speaking of.

As a biologist, I can tell you that many many other animals use camouflage, some blending into their natural environment and other having the colorations of a deadly animal despite being a non-deadly species. I'd venture that camouflage has existed since before humans did. No wonder it's so useful.
Thanks. I lived in a tent and red belly snakes like this part of SE QLD Australia and they left me alone for approximately 3 years. Anyway my point is your comment tells me they did mind their own business and I have stayed safe all my life.. Camouflage is how they live perhaps and this is why I somehow cope without fear. I am no snake charmer but I have respect. I do not look for trouble. They get to know us yet do not attack. There are other creatures but it is manageable. Would not try doing this in another's unfamiliar

2 aspects of camouflage are to disperse the image into the background or break up the outline and distort the image pattern. SF in Vietnam often wore mixed patterns and almost always different top and bottom patterns. The different pant to top automatically cuts your image pattern in half. In a uniforms the small pattern camouflage types always blend at a distance. the reason vintage woodland is so effective is because of its large pattern. The problem is we keep letting computers pick our patterns and we don't see like a computer,.

And apparently, digitized camo are better at breaking shape, the most recent i can remember is the singapore new tropical camo. There's a reason why traditional large pattern camo aren't used anymore, it's simply less effective.

I hate to tell you, but our US G0V is using thelis AGAINST US NOW!! yes our own g0v cares more about mass surveillance on USA citizens, than our b0arder! months ago... g0v surveillance drones filled the night sky over my entire STATE, and havent left since! They are out all night long, every night 7 days a week. they come out sun down, until sun rise. Hundreds/ thousands of them over my town and surrounding towns alone. They fly in all directions, all different altitudes, and all different sizes drones. They fly over my house ALL night long... they fly so close to our windows, and over our homes, they barely make it over the roof ridges! I cant step a pinky toe out of my front door without it being seen from every angle possible in 4k! Me and my neighborhors are extremely p!ssed off, and feel beyond VIOLATED! we called local PD... they know NOTHING! We call the FAA... no response, no answer, or they act dumb and say they will " investigate it". Call back in a month, they blow you off! We called the sheriff and he said he " doesnt know", called the state police.... they acted like we were all paranoid and crazy! They are extremely invasive, me and my family feel EXTREMELY V!OLATED AF!! they fly around all of our properties, keeping tabs on EVERYONE, and EVERYTHING, every night, all night! I can hear what sounds like a jet flying in a non-stop loop above my town EVERY night, ALL night!! They are blanketed across the entire southern part of our state.... from what i can absolutely confirm. I absolutely want to see where they are coming from, where they go right before sun-up... and we are all still trying to figure out what we can do about this absolute TYRANNY that is being force on us by our own U.S. g0v! They spy on us, yet our b0arder is being !nvaded unchecked. Iam almost sickened by what these tyrants are doing to us... AMERICAN CITIZENS! There are currently hundreds of them above my town, my block, my neighborhood, my property, and my hone right now! Small UAV's are very comparable to a trained observer's eyes (with appropriate sensing, such as night or thermal vision). Keep that in mind. They are far more 'obvious' than a trained observer (that WILL use high level camouflage to maintain peak avoidance). Keep THAT in mind. If you KNOW you are being scouted from a fixed position, but you don't know where that position is, it is FAR MORE TACTICALLY VALUABLE to find and take-out the enemy scout, than to wait and engage what 'is coming' from such scouting (such as artillery or mortars). UAV's make this job INFINITELY EASIER! You see a drone, you SHOOT the drone! Take the drone out, abandon a few 'obvious targets' at that location (cars, backpacks, water cans, etc.), and take an ambush position nearby (ideally, before another drone is launched, which will scout why the first was shot down). Small UAVs are a forward-forward scout system...to know where the large UAVs need to work (such as Predators)...so keeping the small ones 'out of the picture' keeps the larger ones from being deployed, to start with. In 1991, during Desert Storm, I know of one Marine unit that after being misidentified as 'enemy' by a circling large UAV, the unit commander ordered the .50 gunner to 'take that drone out'...and he did. The Air Force lost their minds, but it stopped the bombardment (as I remember, it was artillery)...they were getting 'fire correction' from the drone (friendly fire, no less). Destroy the drone, immediately move out of the grid to an 'observation point', turn it into an ambush for troops or a 2nd wave air survey...
Good luck seeing a drone lmao, they would be flying at least about half a kilometer in the air for quadrotors, and much higher for fixed wing, you arent seeing shit lol

@jesus rodriguez by on-board ballistics im guessing you mean auto guided munitions? UAVs dont have anything like that besides JDAMs and only MQ-9s can carry those and those can only hit fixed targets. All other weapons systems on UAVs are going to be laser guided, which can be defeated by breaking line of sight be it via smoke, brush, a wall, etc. And that laser is aimed by a human being and they definitely can miss. also, if were talkin us govt UAVs vs us citizens theyre gonna have to rely on some geek behind a computer screen to make that shot and i can assure you UAV guys are some of the most disgruntled people on the planet and majority hate the govt or love their fellow americans more than the govt. i doubt UAVs would be in play much
They had UAVs in 91? I know the public finds out about tech about 20 years after the military has been using it, but I never heard anything about UAVs being used in desert storm. GPS was a new thing back then. It's what allowed our forces to completely surprise the Iraqis at 73 easting. However, it was so new that I wouldnt think UAVs would have been a thing yet.

It's funny you mention the "deployment" to Poland as an example of training to fight near-peers. I'm here right now and we did all the hooplah: the gunneries, the months in the field, the multinational combined arms exercises... And every scenario has been briefed with enemies somehow in possession of tanks and LAVs, but without nightvision or thermal capability.
And when I brought this up at the division AAR (why aren't we training in scenarios based on reality, so we can develop TTPs for EMCON, using proper camouflage, anti-thermal and anti-NOD techniques, etc.) and they shut me down, booed me for thinking.
The military, Army especially, is gonna learn these TTPs the hard way in the coming years unless "leaders" can pull their heads out their asses.

Was a recce soldier decades ago, setting OPs was my specialty and of all the rules you set out I’d say #8 is the most crucial and least observed.
Too often people will do a quick camo job and assume they’re invisible only to be ambushed because despite what they thought, they were easily spotted, most likely due to something appearing unnatural from a distance such as a tree’s leaves facing the wrong way and reflecting sunlight or a bush or blades of grass leaning the wrong way. Was in the Army as a 13 F in Iraq back in 2009-2010. Worked in a TOC and watched screens of Predators and other Drones. Saw several IED emplacers and even firefights. The use one thing I noticed with the blackhot and white-hot cameras at night was if the the guys that ran away jumped in the water it became very difficult to follow them until they got out of the water. Just a heads up from my experience.
Was that common knowledge among drone operators? Knowing how the optics operate and the topography would really reduce the effectiveness of the tactic of using water. If they wanted to capture someone I figure they have ground units surrounding the area. With a drone observing you would know if guys ran toward and are in a stream or river and inform ground units.

If ground units wanted to get air support ( I was in an aviation brigade) The Division we were supporting had all the Drones. Half the deployment I was on a personel recovery team and the other half I worked in the TOC . There was a Battle captain, the flight coms, S3 I believe which was Intel and the Air Force weather people. SWO I believe and the Fire support specialist to deconflict airspace for the field artillery. We used AFATDS and SIPR net for the secret internet. We didn't even enteract with the drone people. From what I understand they can do it from U.S bases. We just had access to their footage and could support with our air units which was Chinooks, Black Hawks and Kiowas at the time. All I know is the black and white hot made it difficult to see the few guys I saw who were in the water and those operators did lose people from time to time. Weather is also a factor and the Drones can and do crash from time to time.
@@dirtyaznstyle4156 But yes that was what would usually happen if there were ground units in the area. Sometimes the Kiowas would go in and strafe but if they missed and ran out of ammo then they were pretty much Winchester and had to RTB. They didn't catch them all.

@@DataGeek903 True but once they have eyes on they can pretty easily keep tabs on you until they run out of fuel. When I was getting out I heard of Drones that the airforce was making that could stay in the sky for days but I don't keep track as much these days.

In the United States it is a crime to shoot any aircraft in flight no matter how small. A drone has access to 82' to 400' above ground level (AGL). The air is governed by the FAA, the F stands for federal. No municipality can make enforceable laws for the air. 81 feet, I can fly over your house. Not that I would since I consider that tacky, but one could.

Really great video. I was nuts about camo in the corps 84-87. Yes people made jokes about me in my platoon. That is o.k. they made fun of chesty puller as well. It served me well. Had a friend we practiced sneaked on and off our own base, every base we were at and hiding from our own helicopters and guards. The shame is that if we could do it so easily, so might our enemies.

Although I hate to talk about it, I feel the need to share a gruesome story, one I have kept buried for decades. During my CIA days in the 80's, I was involved in a classified (since partially declassified) deployment to South America. Our job was to locate an missing American spec ops detachment who had stopped checking at regular intervals and had been listed as "missing." After two days in the jungle, my team and discovered the scene of a grizzly firefight. There were no bodies at the scene, but there were hundreds of empty shell casings that suggested the squad was panicked and firing in all directions. Needless to say, we were unnerved and full of questions... what were they shooting at? And, why in the hell were there no bodies, no sign, no blood? With more questions than answers, we pushed on... we had orders to find our missing assets at all costs. Over next 24 hours, and during what can only be described as hell on earth, we received our answer. Like the missing squad before us, we were hunted like animals by an alien creature with cloaking and thermal imaging ability. His tech was a force multiplier that we simply could not compete with, and one-by-one we became his trophies. As the last survivor, and doing what warriors do, I decided to make my last stand. I inadvertently discovered that if I covered myself in mud, the creatures thermal imaging could not detect me. It was this knowledge that eventually let me to victory over my deadly opponent. After a fierce fight that seemed almost fictional, my foe lay mortally wounded. As he took his last few breaths, I stood over him and my human eyes met his unfamiliar gaze. Although he had no discernable expression on his crab-like face, his eyes harbored the confusion of a great warrior trying to make sense of being defeated by an inferior opponent. Chuck a tarp over, then some dirt/leaves off the ground over that.
It'll insulate and camouflage. A couple layers of tarp/leaves/tarp/leaves with dirt on top are amazing insulation for cold nights too.
Dont lay under it for too long though, your residual body heat will eventually warm up the air then the insulation, and you will be spotted. Id say go one step futher and dig tunnels, remember, the japanese were impervious to all aerial and standoff bombardments becuase of their extensive tunnel systems. This also helps with movement, you can move equipment and people with no one being able to see it. Tunnels are probably the best guerilla logistic tactic, and american has never won a war against guerillas.

Vehicles are bullet magnets. When my National Guard unit deployed to the Middle East in 2004 I objected to "stay in the vehicle" and "park in the road." History demonstrated that staying on roads and hiding in "armored vehicles" such as the old half-track and the M113 wasn't a very good idea even against guerrillas with "only" small arms.

An interesting topic to cover related to this are the satellites that go over a few times every single day covering virtually every square inch of ground. They can see every square foot of your property and with computers designed to detect the slightest changes. If you dig a spider hole they'll know it unless you conceal it as you're doing it. Bear in mind when done it better look exactly as it was before you started. No debris piles of any kind. There are also companies everywhere taking arial pictures of people's property in order to sell to homeowners.

My wife loves cats and we have three, a black cat, a grey cat, and a multi-color cat (white, tan, and brown). When these cats go outside and begin to roam around, it becomes very difficult to follow the movement of the grey cat, to a lesser extent the black cat, but the multi-colored cat could easily be spotted in any type of color of the ground cover around (we live on a ranch in central Texas). It has made me look at camouflage in a totally different light. Wonder now if the newer black/grey “multi-cam” gear is a better approach to camouflage, particularly in an urban area, but possibly in areas where there are a variety of growth cover, like in rural areas.
All the farm cats I've had that survived for more than a few weeks going outdoors whenever they wanted were grey, or grey tabby. The cats we've got now are a black and a black-and-white and we don't let them outdoors. It's a dangerous world out there when you're that small.
Yes proper camo will make you invisible! We grunts always covered up our foot traffic and used local vegetation on our existing camo for cover concealment. The whole concept is blend into your background and now you need to make yourself invisible from the eye in the sky 🎯

Having worked within the military drone industry since 2005 and jointly within the civilian from industry for decades before and after the military market I can state with extreme emphasis that people absolutely must become aware of how pervasive the use of small UAS by law enforcement has become. We cannot play a game of poker and expect to win if we don't know the rules or how the game is played. Such is the case with the use of drones. Much of what they can see can be defeated with just a little planning and effort. Conversely, much of what law enforcement or military is doing can be easily exposed through the civilian use of drones. I predicted long ago that drones would become a tool used against our civilian population, a prediction that came true, and their use is expanding every day.

Shape shine silhouette movement, the basics we were taught in the 1070/80s back in the cold war to avoid overhead detection from reconnaissance aircraft , I have seen in all NATO forces in action maybe since the turn of the century a loss of some of the basics we were previously taught and took for granted maybe from the 1950,s onwards reaching a peak at the end of last century. I know its not just me because I have talked to former colleagues who watch the news and see videos from war zones etc, if there is one thing we have access to its video footage and we observe very many basic errors in tactics in this current armed forces in the west in general.

All vehicles in my time had camo nets on them and these were deployed as SOP when stopped, grunts always had clothing camo brush and the like attached, including helmet cam, dispersion of ground forces was a given too. I saw Reccy pictures from Jaguar aircraft in the 1980,s of deployed armoured units and all of these picture taught us how to mitigate observation from above and it was a common place thing to be aware of observation from above, I can not believe people in this day and age are not more aware of UAV observation but there you go. I served from 1975-1980, Vietnam Era by the barest measure. I agree with you that the training is different. I used to do spook work of sorts, nothing special. But my job required me to basically get invisible and stay that way. Some days seemed to take years because of the terrain that we had to cross. Aerial surveillance was what scared us the most on a big scale but, on the ground, I really didn’t care for dogs. Dogs use different senses!

I would not give out tradecraft, but one way to hide from Thermal and is abundant and cheap is a Mylar blanket. There are a few more I can give out. That is not tradecraft, or NDA. Intensely interesting. Avoiding observation while mounting a tactical operation is something old Geronimo and his Apaches were adept in. His tactics are still taught and i see some of them here. Now you need eyes on top of your head too. I had long thought of these little drones as a perfect reconnoitering tool.

When you can drive an M-88 tow tank or 5 ton wrecker under your camo net, then you have set your camo equipment up properly. I ended up teaching many fellow soldiers the simple technique of using poles and paddles to support nets properly. Some guys just didn't have enough IQ points. Those are the ones to avoid until they self destruct.
An important part of those camouflage nets are the little metal rings integrated on the nets. The purpose of those is for radar deception. Just a little over looked tid bit of camouflage netting and it's simple technology for deception!!!
Maybe in Afghanistan, but not in Russia. This NATO tricks are Hollywood made movies...

@@demox_yt8386 the front poles and paddles are to hold the net up high enough to drive under as well as the rear. On the front the next can be open or closed but i kept mine high enough to walk under. On the rear the poles were spaced wide enough and high enough to drive into and back outta the net without becoming entangled. Its like pulling into a portable garage that you can buy online. The nets are hoisted two poles at a time and were 6 total to also support the middle of the net. It took final adjustments once the net was in the air but once you get the hang of it they can bw set up in about a half hour or less.

I'm so glad my dad taught me to hunt, how to trap, how to stalk game, how to observe to detect game, how to think like a predator, how to make temporary shelter that will allow you to survive in any weather in case you get caught out in the wilderness overnight, and most importantly, how to not be seen in the wilderness by critters with senses advanced well beyond human abilities. All the camouflage in the world won't save you if you don't know these things. Master these skills and you're a ghost. Mylar blankets are a must for several reasons.

@S2 Underground - For preparation of the possible future need for civilians to have appropriate camouflage tarp options, what would you suggest?
1) buying 6 or 8 widely varying camouflage tarps?
2) buying generic tarps close in color to the desired end color and painting(?) them with individualized camouflage patterns? (To be efficient, each side would be different.)
3) buy the old school camouflage netting with ripstop fabric pieces? (Was this what you referred during the video?)
4) Using brush, grass, sand, dirt from the immediate area to add to one of the other options?
5) some other option I haven't thought of yet, or missed during this video?
If we should buy something, where are they sold? Are there some to avoid?
My guess that these tarps would need to be kept from everyday use for the time you really need them, not for general tarping stuff in the bed of the truck or trailer, thus the paint/colorant/stains don't fade, flake, wear off?

Emergency aluminum blankets help hide thermal images as well. Need to be under camo tarps for radar image protection as well.

I wonder if the old style camouflage netting, that is similar to a ghillie suit, would still be effective since the reflective value of the thermal blanket is so high? Even the occasional glint of light might be an issue. 😞
I guess a solid tarp would be best if hiding thermals also.
Something else to keep in mind.
Any tarp properly covered in local vegetation debris and dirt will work well enough if;
You avoid straight lines (nature doesn't have these, neither should you)
Keep your cover as low to the ground as practical, if you stick out from the topography you are easy to find, being in the base af a depression will help with this.
Layering your tarps will keep you warm and help disguise the typically flat surfaces (flat is straight, see comments on straight lines) lumps bumbs and irregular surfaces are your friend, basically hap-hazardly throw dirt and leaves etc on your first tarp do not smooth that put another tarp on that, and repeat a few times and improve your result. Will also disguise and disperse your heat signatures.
Do not move about if you can avoid it, movement is detectable avoid this if you can.
Do not rely on paint or the like it can show up well if the lighting is different than it was when it was painted. Also paint has an odor when fresh, don't not a good plan, better than nothing but far from good.
Use game trails they're natural, not often used by people, and people are used to seeing them. (Not an option for mechanized travel, foot traffic only. And resist the urge to improve them branches, bushes and the like are your friends especially if dealing with briars people hate those and clear them if they can don't do that squirrels, deer and the like don't you shouldn't either.
Caves are even better, especially if you PROPPERLY tarp the entrance and and follow game trails low and slow.

Always helpful to watch videos like these, one can pick up little nuggets of info if paying attention to detail. I noticed in the comments alot of people were asking what year was the banana leaves story. I personally was in Somalia in 83 and we was working with the Somalian Army against Chad. And we blew a small coral reef to allow small boats to have access to the beach. Which I'm pretty sure was the same area used during Clinton's humanitarian mission which turned to shit. Point being there's always more going on than meets the eye, not to mention the media cannot be trusted.
Cellphones are always talking even when turned off; remove the battery or put in a faraday bag to block its signal.
If needed you can improvise one with aluminum foil, but it's best to already have one.
For them to transmit when they're off, they'd have to put a virus in your phone that prevents it from completely shut down

It's the same with computers running windows 10, the cpu doesn't shut down completely as long as there is power being supplied in order to keep a certain amount of memory stored so the device can power up and load the OS much quicker than it otherwise could.

One thing I always find interesting when talking about personal camouflage, is that people often overlook hunting camo. Hunting camo can be specifically designed for certain areas and if you're getting camo for your home turf, hunting camo for that area can be miles better than some military camo. Some of my coyote hunting camo can make me disappear in the dry grassland, as it was specifically designed for that exact terrain.
How well treated with non IR reflective coating or thermal signature leakage are they, though?

The only way to defeat thermal from above is to have something suspended above you or infront of you that creates a thermal barrier between you and the thermal sensor. Heat transfer to anything you wear shows through, especially on the shoulders and head.
I remember the Mythbusters where they were testing different ways to hide from thermal. They found glass completely masks thermal signature, but it's totally impractical. One - carrying around a big pane of glass and 2 the pane itself would show up as a big thermal neutral square lol 😆
It works against type 1 ir blocks 99 of it. But the second type can go through most glass. This also means that all thermal emitters and googles have to be made with special glass. As otherwise it would only get a blurry image.

Most definitely look into short range jammers. You can make simple signal jammers with over the counter products you would find at a local hardware store.

@@RandyMan696 most small drones use GPS signal from your phone and jamming those signals are illegal since it may interrupt other local signals. So saying anything else and listing parts would also be illegal. Which I won't do on RUclips. You can make them but it requires your own research. I'm definitely not talking jamming larger military drones. But civilian ones but yeah you technically could.
They are available for jamming the signals inside of your car or home , anything outside of that will get you in a lot of trouble.
From a general civilian perspective, relearning how to move around, associate with others, and make purchases “completely analog” can sure cover a lot of territory. Start leaving your phone in a strategic spot being flooded with the TV at intervals and get used to doing some activities of life “electronically silent”.

I played this capture the falg type game once and knowing how to camouflage myself helped a bit, had a large group of people on a long dirt road, half were guards and had flashlights, the other half had to make it down the road and grab the flag in the middle of a field without being seen. Yeah the blanket trick is pretty common. As long as a person is in an area with good thermal variability (i.e. in a rock pile, where every rock is a different temp) and isn't touching the blanket with their body, and if they don't move, it is devastatingly effective
Saw a video where one guy used these rescue blankets that are suppose to keep your heat inside so you get warmer ... and they pretty much disapeared on IR cameras ... mind you that was probably not military type cameras but still.

The problem with mylar blankets is that they also can reflect cold temps, like the sky. So sometimes people think that they are hiding their body heat, but in reality the sensor is seeing a very bright cold spot on the ground, which also draws the eye. The new VS-21 panels are pretty much exactly that, a camouflaged mylar square that reflects the cold temps of the sky like a mirror

The reason they disperse during attacks or firefights is to make it harder on the attackers being fired on from different locations also so one soldier can get the attention of one attacker while a sniper takes him out. And alot of the time it's snipers that take save the most loves in war
the problem with dispersion is that it severely hampers communication, element cohesion, and your overall effectiveness in a fight.
if you have one guy spread out every 100 meters, you're basically just by yourself, and any force that attacks your position would have local superiority.
There has to be a better option than to simply scatter to the wind, as that is not a realistic answer to the threat.
It seems like you could hide your radio frequency signature by hiding transmitters that come on intermittently across the landscape. Or at least present the impression of a force large enough it should be avoided. I have never heard of this being done but I have heard of troops in olden times lighting multiple camp fires per soldier to appear much more formidable.

Over 2 years have passed since my observations began. Had no hint of a clue that an impromptu decision to kick back and relax for a few minutes would ultimately redirect my life path into the unknown. Unnoticed by the vast majority of people living here in the US, both day and night our skies are teaming with a constant flow of silent UAVs. Some are so small you can't even see 'em, only hear 'em. Some are as big as a full size school bus. Some have blinking lights, some have rows of solid lights, some emit an eerie internal phase shifting glow, some have no lights at all but a foreboding darkness emanates from them. Some are shaped like saucers, some are shaped like missiles, some are shaped like airplanes. Some resemble birds, some resemble hornets, some resemble unknown fantastical flying creatures, some are I can only describe as, um, damn near invisible. Only a few times have all the necessary environmental conditions (elements/combination still unknown) aligned in such a way allowing me to see this strange defined area of the sky that's slightly distorted.....a shimmering, if you will, of the very air space occupied by it......kinda like a 'heat devil' (regular phenomenon seen here in the Deep South during those sweltering hot summertime middays). Overall UAV numbers have increased steadily and are now so numerous that an accurate count is humanly impossible. Nighttime is drone time. The sky is literally saturated with them. Rest assured they are out and about during the day as well but are more difficult to see with just the naked eye. And I'm here to tell you, many of them are NOT the limited range remote control, less than thirty minute flight time consumer grade units owned by seemingly every child/young adult in America. More and more am I seeing odd shaped crafts of all sizes which display an agility and maneuverability that is IMPOSSIBLE according to our understanding of the laws of physics and materials engineering. Where are they coming from and who or what controls them???? Countless rabbit hole doorways appear simultaneously without even verbalizing that line of inquiry. lol!
And now, right here is where this journey's dirt path forward seamlessly transitions into a vast body of deep murky water. A short distance out is a brightly lit billboard style sign elevated high above the water on concrete stilts. For those with eyes to see, the sign is easy to read; and though minimalistic in words, the message and interpretations thereof will abound in perpetuity.

How many drones of various sizes can there be? Certainly not enough to watch everyone all the time. My guess is to avoid the pack. And like someone said; you just have to be less detectable then the next guy.
I also think that being the only one in an area could increase the odds of being caught.

Midwest, Michigan for me, Tigerstripe works wonders. I think in any Midwest wooded environment, along with M81, Tigerstripe will be near the top in effectiveness, due to the branches and shadowing found in heavily wooded environments. Not to shabby in tall grass either.
Just look at how effective zebra stripes are against lions. Sure the lion can see a bunch of zebras but it can't ID one of them to attack. Same idea of the "razzle dazzle" ship camo, confuse the enemy

Just to refine what you're talking about, as you stated yourself, none of this is anything new. The best Army manual on the subject is still 5-20 "Camouflage" from 1969.
BTW, in Jim Rawles' "Patriots," the bible of modern survivalism, the characters in his instruction manual-dressed-as fiction had their bugout vehicles painted in solid earth-tones with flattener added. Also at one point in the book, when the main characters went on an interstate rescue mission, they slept well away from their vehicles which, in addition were parked tactically and camouflaged.
Also, my favorite tarps for camouflage are the ones sold by Bi-Mart. They're brown on one side and OD Green on the other. Not the toughest tarps, but they've improved quite a bit over the years.
Maaco, in their line of Sherwin-Williams paints has an entire line of earth tone colors and can add flattener. An excellent, universal dark coyote earth tone (a real Marine color, lol) is Maaco paint # 47087 w/flattener added.
P.S: I just learned that some LINE-X certified shops (I.e., my local one) can do different colors, even though they don't advertise it!!! Get your post-collapse vehicle painted with this, rather than regular paint!!! They informed me that they can't do perfect color-matching, but who cares!! LINE-X has a no-questions-asked lifetime guarantee, for starters...

In 2012 when I was stationed at Ft. Benning, I was assigned to a Civilian Group called ThreatTec, that actually helped develop the Army's doctrine for drone detection and concealment. We played OpFor (Opposing Force) that tried different ways of avoiding the drones used by an Active Duty unit. It was interesting to say the least........

I would think that avoiding drones today will become more and more difficult. Recognition software and thermal imaging are two daunting technologies that would be very difficult to avoid. The sci-fi movies have become more real than I would have ever wanted.

Question;
Can displacement itself also be a problem, even with camoflage, if your drone operator is looking for changes in terrain, or foliage?
For example, looking at the same area a half hour, or hour later and comparing images
Not too familiar with modern drone capabilities.
They know what a landscape looked like prior to now so differences become obvious. It's about resolution, how closely they're looking, how long ago they last looked there, and what they're looking with. Important targets get scrutinized, nobodies get overlooked, patterns are visible as are the lack of them.
I'm thinking about taking a mylar survival blanket and cutting holes shaped like rabbits to allow excess heat to escape. That way, when the drone flys over me and looks down, it will look like rabbits having a family reunion.
