Can the KTM 390 ADV follow the KLX300 up the rocks?

  • You may have seen me go up some difficult terrain on my new KLX300 that I had avoided on the KTM 390 Adventure. Well today is the day! Time to see if the 390 can cover the same ground. Watch me give it my all and see if the 390 can keep up with a dual sport.

    I could hear that traction control chattering up that hill…I noticed that chatter the first time I road offroad. The TC is great for flat cornering and ascending, but hills it struggles terribly. Great video👍🏼

    Good video mate. Never underestimate the value of dropping the bike's center of gravity by standing on the pegs. Thereby using your body to aide the bike's momentum over obstacles. Yes, the 390 has a smaller front wheel compared to e.g. a dirt bike, but can still go over pretty much anything if your entire *balanced* weight is behind it. Keep up the good work!

    Nice effort! I bet next time you'll nail that hill first time with a little more momentum. Nice job giving it another go! I've also found myself halfway up a hill with the TC still on..not a good feeling!!

    Great video! I just bought a new 2022 390 Adventure, but I don't see myself trying anything like that! I guess I will get me a KLX 300 next and keep the KTM. I have to say, the KTM is a fantastic bike.

    First gear seems insanely high. Picking up my new 2023 390 Adventure SW tomorrow. Will be interesting to see what it can do. Currently riding a Kawasaki KLX230.

      Cheap and easy to put a 14 tooth front sprocket to help with that. You’ll love the 390 compared to the 230!

      There is a product called Fuel X lite that plugs in and apparently smooths out the bike at low revs. New bikes come running quite lean to meet emission standards. I have no personal experience with it, but there are lots of videos that cover it.

    I've ridden some similar trails on my 390. A 14T front sprocket helps, and doesn't seem to have any negative effect in 6th.

      @Matthew Kopf That MTC resetting drives me nuts. On my 2022 it was fixed so that it stay where you set it. Yea! Then the dealer updated the software from v9 to v10 and guess what? It's back to resetting to on again. And the dealer said they cannot go back to v9. Grrr!

      Really? Maybe that explains why when I recently had it flashed I didn’t notice any improvement.

    Lots of comments about getting on the throttle. To get this bike up the steeper rockier trails is a combination of throttle and clutch work. You can’t just twist throttle.

    Love your video, was this with the 14t sprocket?
    I have just swapped to a 14t on mine and for the road really like it. I wonder if going properly offroad like this a 13 mightn't be a better option?

    Those are the two bikes I’m considering. Kinda want both. Not sure which one to get first. I’m kinda leaning towards the 390 as you get a pretty fun road bike that can do a fair amount of off-road. But I wouldn’t hesitate taking any trail with that Kawai….

    Ride looks pretty narly. Do u still ride with the db killer in? Do u have a vid of the difference between the db killer in & out? If not would you be able to do one planes. ? What are your thoughts on the exhaust ? Just looking at buying the same. Cheers.

      I still have the DB killer in. I wouldn't want any louder exhaust on my bike. I'll see if I can get a comparison with and without the DB killer soon.

      @@makmoto0606 cheers. Yeah that would be grand.. been looking at buying one. The gp1 just sounds too loud & obnoxious, the oval one seems to be ok. Just not sure about the sound tho. So if u could that would be great. Cheers.

    I am older and trying to choose between these two for getting out on the backroads and trails. I am in my late 60's. Which would you recommend? Is the KLX300 a bit easier for me or ?

      Go with the KTM 390. A great all around bike. The KLX is only better for hard off-road.

    When in doubt throttle out........ 😀 I like the 390 and have learned give it some gas....... the gearing does not allow for crawling over objects.

      I’ve got the 14 tooth up front and am happy with it right now. I don’t think I’d make the gearing any lower, because it would probably start to affect highway performance. Thanks.

    The 390 is a street bike dressed up like an ADV bike. Clothes don't make the bike.

      Most ADV bikes are based on a street bike. And I think it’s more capable than most riders. What’s wrong with it?

      @@makmoto0606 It's not based on a street bike. It's an unchanged street bike that's been dressed up. The motor has no low end. Fine for street, useless on the trail.

      @@hazcat640 hum, different suspension and wheels and electronics, seems like most ADVs to me. Is it a KTM R model, nope, is it the best entry level ADV(low cost/weight)? I think so.

      @@makmoto0606 Street wheels and most mfg's retune the engine. Too heavy, too unbalanced, too breakable, ABS that can't be turned off.
