What a parable she wrote. Yes, we brought people here from Africa to build our houses and plant our gardens, then we told them not to participate, not to belong, and burned their houses down. They stayed and survived. Rhiannon is an example of the strength and beauty of humanity. Yo Yo Ma, born in France from immigrant parents feels her voice and her authenticity. Both are classically trained. This is art at its highest.
400 years of history, distilled and encapsulated into a beautiful, powerful piece and played on the most apropos instrument possible.
Two gifted musicians who are also gifts to us. This is outstanding.

I certainly didn’t mean to diminish the arrangement aspect of this beautiful performance. I just wanted to comment that these lyrics could stand on their own. If I came upon the lyric sheet by itself, I would be moved.
Amazing!!!! I would love to have my elementary school learn this song and sing it at our concert next year (if we are able to have one!). I teach a year of Black History through music to every student in our school (in addition to including it every year).

Please... hopefully the U.S. teachers will be able to still teach Black History in the future. White American has been burying Black and Native American history for generations... actually forever. The actual history is shameful and they can't bear to know about it.
In over the moon about this song. Yo Yo Ma looks as if he enjoyed playing this tune with her. Love it Love it Love it.
Humor is one of those rare jewels who just loves playing all kinds of music. I saw him at a concert in San Antonio and he brought out Flaco Jimenez for the encore. People were crying it was so beautiful.
Every note - from the rhythmic instrumental intro to the last whispers from Yo Yo Ma’s soulful cello - sets a deep, rich, complex and beautiful frame to support Rhiannon’s truthful and stunning lyrics. Yes, powerful, like her. Her voice - medicinal honey: sweet, smooth, not always easy to swallow, yet healing and never covering over the pain and reality in the stories she tells. Love that banjo work, as well. I never tire of her music, and her show was the highlight for me at a folk music festival a couple of years ago.

Two of the greatest musicians of our lifetime. Simultaneously genre defining and genre defying. Many of us are playing tunes, swapping files and collaborating online, just to pass the time, but this is the state of the art.
Rhiannon Giddens has the best voice in music these days. Her range of octives is certainly the widest. She can belt out of her soul like Aretha Franklin and she can hit some pretty high notes as well. Her talent as a musician is very diverse as well she can play the guitar, the fiddle and the banjo all beautifully. Just what I have mentioned here, puts her in a class all her own, well above the nearest musician. There may be some that play more instruments, but they can't sing or else we'd know who this mystery person is. All of this and add to that the fact that she is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! A Beautiful Southern Lady. Rhiannon Giddens is a rare combination of talent we are lucky to be blessed with. I just Love Her. Both senses , hearing and vision she stimulates both in a perfectly beautiful way. Thank You Rhiannon!!!

Privileged to see Rhiannon at Port Fairy Folk Festival in March 2020, must have been amongst her last live performances before lockdown, one week later and everything stopped. Her mission in music is unique and unstoppable. A joy to see this partnership.

The banjo and cello on this sound like Chinese folk instruments the way the're used. That has to be deliberate, for all kinds of reasons. Kind of cool to hear those with a Piedmont Blues written in cut time.

I just heard this song on my local radio in Taos, NM. Brought me right to tears. I am almost finished building my house after suffering a total-loss fire on the other side of the country 4 years ago. I have never been so personally struck by a single song.
