Mrs. Giddens is one of the most talented musicians on the planet .
Someone get Rhiannon a TV show! PBS, this is right up your alley.
Rhiannon Giddens touches the soul in a way few artists can. Thank You....
I recently bought tickets to see her live! I couldn't be more excited. She keeps this country's heritage and history alive and I admire her so much for it.
you'll love her show! saw her again last week. we first saw her at MerleFest in 2008, and numerous times since.
Don’t know how I’m only hearing of her now, but she is an incredible musician.
Ok Her singing "Julie" is one of those moments you rarely see in music. That was absolutely beautiful and with such emotion and conviction. I stood and clapped even though the dog thought I was crazy. lol WoW!
I hope "Julie" is remembered generations from now as one of the great American songs.
I respect her for being willing to talk about minstrelsy. So few people are willing to do that. Plus she's an amazing musician.
ANYONE SO INTO THIS FORM OF MUSIC cannot BUT appreciate and learn about history
Oh Lordy, I love this gal. She’s keepin the real history of America alive. Oh...I’ve lived it and tasted it too. It ain’t nothin like the fake history you read in novels, text books and see in the movies.
Very well put.
Yes !
Amen !
I have just discovered Rhiannon who is not only a talented musician but has a great voice. Also a very good historian
on Southern Country music and, particularly, black banjo players. I have been interested in the blues and Southern music
since I was a teenager in the early fifties. Rhiannon you are a pleasure to listen too.
African American history is really amazingly sad and amazingly beautiful all at once. So proud of my culture!!!
She is a perfect beauty, and her hands are absolutely from out of this world! Of course she is also a great person and a wonderful musician!
Discovered this great woman about a month ago. Still spellbound. Formidable lady & musician. Thanks for posting this !
From a Norwegian woodworker
She is so lovely, inside and out, and oh so very talented
Besides for the sheer joy of partaking of original American music, we can benefit from a lesson in American cultural history. God Bless RUclips for offering her a format to reach wider audiences and educate more.
This is so brilliant. What a beautiful tone from the nylon stringed banjo. Her voice is so amazing too. And she knows the real history of the music of the banjo and theatre.
Ms. Giddens, you are clearly highly intelligent, well versed in history, and a talented musician. In short, you know your s$+%. The more of your music I have the opportunity to hear, the better. Your music is beautiful, and deeply moving, and it's an excellent refrain for the current day. I truly and deeply hope that influences such as yours can help us ACTUALLY deal with America's past and help build a more (and eventually completely) anti-racist future.
Mr. Holt is a most valuable source of American folklore. Thank you Mr.Holt!
Fascinating. She’s a compelling speaker.
Not only is she amazingly talented, but am I the only one that thinks she's incredibly gorgeous?
I'm guessing that gentleman is supremely skilled with chopsticks.
I'm fascinated with tis woman. Every time I hear her I'm greatly impressed. Such a powerful voice and talent! In ways she reminds me Mahalia Jackson. I hope she will take that as a compliment.
What a delightful, talented woman. Bravo!!!
Powerful, focused, amazing. Would love to see this woman in concert.
I only discovered Giddens a few weeks ago, what a wonderful performer she is, such range and power and relevant music, gives me hope in America again. Australia.
She nails it when pointing out the importance of carefully including minstrelsy in the canon of American music. It's a complicated situation, but the music that isn't blatantly racist should continue to live on.
Great interview. Love this lady, her songs and her playing. Thank you David.
The music was brilliant, the talk so intreasting, the guy on the bones loved it, you can hear the simularety to the flat foot buckdance, accomplement to said instruments dave Uk Suffolk Ps love CCD also pps "Julie " is great to dance too love it

such a talented person thank for touching my soul, dormant to awaken, thank you.
This is very educational. I appreciate the chance to learn more about the roots of American music, and Rhiannon's willingness to talk about it.
Rhiannon is one of a kind, she’s not only a singer, but an accomplished historian of black banjo music. Her namesake ‘Rhiannon’ is the Welsh goddess of suffering and patience. What else can I say...Rhiannon is intelligent, talented, interesting and so beautiful. I just love to hear and watch her perform.
What a talented young woman. Thank you for sharing your gift. Your song Julie was heartbreaking.
Rhiannon sang this so felt so true. Yes it is rare and meaningful. Angst for Julies plight as a slave and her choice.
Love to hear this Lady sing. Would be wonderful to hear her and Willie Watson do a duet of some of the older songs!
beautiful and incredibly talented
Thanks for the education.
My daughter is also named Rhiannon. She plays the flute, bass guitar, and djembe drum. If you are ever in west Texas it would be good for Y'all to jam.
She is one very talented lady !
This brought me to tears...
I enjoyed the talk and the music, she has great tone on the fretless banjo, i also enjoyed her eloquent language concerning race and folklore.
Exquisite and genuine, thank you Ms. Rhiannon and thank you for this memorizing and poignant upload. Touch me deep in my soul.
Fabulous talent. Loved the history lesson and masterful music. Greetings from the deep South. Rep of Panama 🇵🇦
wow this girl what a voice and great playing
I only got to see them once, but it was great! They even did a little "workshop" afterwards telling the story of this great music...
Thank for sharing, this women is so awesome. Saw her last week live and it blew my mind.
Rhiannon is the name of a Welsh goddess. Yes she is.
Wow, Ms. Gideon’s is an inspiring banjo player and singer!
LOVE Banjo music. Love this lady
finally there is a fully honest talented person to sing the truth after johnny cash and others have gone on. rosetta tharpe- odetta etc.
thank you so much for your commitment. 'up above my head i hear music in the air and i really do believe there's a heaven somewhere'.
Beautiful! Thank you both!
massive respect
Thank you so much for this knowledge you have passed on along with the tradition, it's truly beautiful to know the origins of the instrument, music we love. It's crazy how this was recorded in 2015 but so many kick ass bands and musicians are growing love and interest for the banjo today! Really the classic may never die!! 🙏🏼🙌🏼💕
Wow! That voice is amazing!🎤🎼
Her rendition of Julie is one the most beautiful things I've heard. Don't think anyone else could do that song justice. Thanks for posting it.
Well, it's written by her so....
In today's vacuous and stultified musical climate, she's a breath of fresh air.
Thanks for this, David! Hugs from Brazil!
Great performer. Love you Rhiannon.
Love the interview and history. I like you voice and playing so much I can't decide which is better!
Thanks for sharing this! Love Giddens.
That second piece was heavy. Beautifully performed.
To me she is a national treasure. Beautiful voice. Great musician also.
Gifted 😎
A beautiful lady and a national treasure! Love you
Ms. Giddens is awesome.
I discovered her music through Red Dead Redemption 2. She's extraordinarily talented! Lover her!
I happened on this young lady by chance as a scrolled through You Tube, oh to get back the years before I found her music.
Me, too
Wow, that last tune 'Julie' is a real bone-chiller.
@Doug Green I like how you frame it as the war of northern aggression. Don't forget the south were traitors, all of them and they fired the first shot. The south preferred to go to war rather than let slavery run its course as was demonstrated.
Plenty of racism to go around back then, in the north as well as in the south. More complicated than the North being ‘good’ and South ‘bad’. Nonetheless, the south was a collection of slave states, and slaves were literally the backbone of the southern economy . They didn’t want to give that up. Ain’t just northern propaganda
I don't find it bone-chilling. I find it hilarious that the mistress believes, after all of the violence she and her family perpetrated against Julie, that Julie will comply. It centers the black woman's voice. It calls out the particular evil of separating black families for white families' financial gain. It lays plain white women's role in the violence. Julie's like, "Peace. I'm out."
@@yes_anotherone3260 I agree!
If you haven't heard it yet, listen to The Purchaser's Option. That one is a chiller indeed. The video is extremely moving although she doesn't move at all from her chair in the middle of a road running through a cornfield.
Fantastic.
She is so eloquent
Super great! So glad to hear "Julie" out of both speakers.
My pleasure. Sorry for the delay!
FIRE> I love this

Beautiful interview. ❤️🇺🇲💙🙏✌️
fantastic
never seen a fretless banjo before - great interview!
alcatrazzz Yep. They are harder to learn to play but there were no frets on those home made banjos.
She is what America will be in less than 100 years . Here in Texas , her composition, her tone and phrasing is very very common . America is getting to be beautiful .
I enjoyed this discussion by two intelligent people from different (I assume) backgrounds.
From the land Down under 👍 Yes to real history .
