With all the depth and sweetness of her voice, she pays full homage to Elizabeth and takes her own steps to places in our hearts... Truly heavenly.
I just discovered Rhiannon Giddens and her music. It reminds me of how little I know about this nation of 330 million. I was born and raised in NYC but spent most of my adult years traveling the globe in the military and State Department. I retired in NC and never heard of her. She is absolutely wonderful. I’m going to buy all her music for my listening pleasure. It’s a reminder that the noise around me is a distraction, while everyday people never get the attention they deserve. Keep up the good work. The nation needs you.
She is from NC.
@@oldmanonthehill56 Sorry but you're wrong ! She's from another world.
Well, I discovered her in 2023, so I'm even later to the party!
I'm from Trinidad in the West Indies and came across her music about 5-6 years ago. I love Oh Julie
@@Onlyglooshe’s from Greensboro, NC.
A great tribute to Elizabeth Cotten. Beautifully sung. The song takes you somewhere holy.
We first discovered Rhiannon when she was with the Carolina Chocolate Drops at Merlefest about a decade ago. Besides having a voice for the ages, she is a fine instrumentalist. She has dug deep into the American tradition, and, for those of us who love traditional music, she is a treasure. But that's not all she does. Check out her duet with Paul Simon on his American Tune. It is as good as music gets.
She wrote an opera also.
Elizabeth Cotton and her music are true American cultural gems. Hear all you can.
Elizabeth Cotten was an absolute pioneer, she needs to be recognized more
There is something profound about her... from her eyes, to her performance ... transcends time... magical.
your comment is perfectly captures my feelings about her, thank you!
In French, it is called Je Ne Sais Quoi.
Rhiannon Giddens is one of those rare singers whose voice is so wonderful that when she sings, regardless of the genre of music, I just have to listen.
You are sooooooooooooooooo right!
She got some pipes, baby! Whoooo! Yes, whatever she sings is beautiful.
Same here.
Absolutely. She is classically trained to sing opera. That's the reason she has that "big" voice that really projects.
Look what they've done to my song ma.
Lovely! It was my incredible privilege to sit at the feet of Libba Cotton when I was a teenager, and she was still a domestic in the Seeger family (Peggy and Mike were also teenagers)--and hear her songs, and gasp at her guitar playing. I believe if there is a heaven, and she is up there, she is smiling down on Rhiannon Giddens with amazement and happiness. Carry it on!
That’s a wonderful, beautiful memory. Thank you for sharing it.
Wow. That's some good🎶 story🤗
Amazing.
You called her Libba?
Wow.
I just found a vid of Miss Cotton singing "Oh Babe it ain't no Lie"
I have seen Jerry Garcia sing this tune.
Now I know from whence it came.
Thank you.
Be Well 🙏🏻
😉Shake Sugaree.
@@francoisa5656 I would love to think that I called her Mrs. Cotton! I probably didn't call her anything...too awestruck! Seeing this brilliant musician working as a domestic--OK in a terrific, progressive family, but yet and still-- totally messed with my mind and made me the fire-breathing political activist I am today! (I know the Seeger "kids" got it too and did something about it in later years, when they could.) Incidentally I am turning 84 in a month...Stay well yourself--I'm vaccinated!
@@secondchancesinger Ma'am.
Thank you.
And God Bless 😉
She makes it sound so effortless but we also are well aware we're in the presence of greatness amazing person beautiful energy evocative voice grateful to hear her and the musicians with her thank you all
Rhiannon is a special artist bringing culture to the world.
I think what makes this particularly good is her obvious deep respect for the original performer - she hasn't messed with the song unnecessarily, just done the best salute as she could to it. Excellent stuff, and I'm sure Elizabeth Cotten would have been proud to hear it.
Amen. As someone who knew the original performer, I totally agree. Color be damned.
This is the soul of what makes us a great country. Miss Giddens, you are a national treasure...
Blacks made America great? Black accomplishments made blacks great. Too bad the whites fucked it up. America is its own white disgrace. I know. I’m a white man.
@@johnmartlew5897 I like what you said! Someone not in arrogant denial! We need to be honest with ourselves, to have any hope of change.
John Martlew American accomplishments make America great. Americans aren’t any one color
@@johnmartlew5897 Nations aren't great. Societies aren't great. Races aren't great. Being a bigot against whites is no more logical than being a bigot against Blacks. All that matters is the individual. When you die, it will be just you.
@@willinnewhaven3285 if an entire group is described as inferior for centuries, and defined with a list to be a certain way, any one individual born into that group who then disproves those misinformed racists/sexists, disproves their entire theory about the whole group...and that matters. Ultimately, no group exists the way the racist or sexist imagines, but to play colour blind or gender blind, is just a plaster on a wound that will not heal, that way. Take care, friend.
Why does her voice bring tears into my eyes. What a beautiful lady & voice.
Me too 😢
Because God Blessed you with a Soul 🙏🙏🙏
Beautiful lady but average voice.
@@freefrank9047 It’s nice, but the original version sung by Cotton’s 12 year old great-granddaughter blows it away.
The combination of voice and the tune with simplicity of arrangement is what does it for me.
Congratulations to Rhiannon on being chosen as a 2017 MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” winner! She does her research, it impacts her and she turns it into something very special. I appreciate her genuine devotion, plus her amazing talent speaks for itself. Well done! Well deserved!
Well said, and agree!
Also, agree. Lovely as well just to hear her talk.
Amazing!!!
She's a good and competent singer and musician certainly, but no genius.
@@Eris123451 Strongly disagree with your ill informed opinion. With her masterful banjo, guitar and fiddle playing, her incredible ability to sing and play Appalchian, African American roots music, Irish ballads and even French chanteuse melodies she is pure genius. I dare you to name another current musician with her range and ability to inject emotion into whatever she performs.
Everything is magical, Elisabeth Cotten's song, voice of Ms. Giddens, fascinating guitar, creepy bass or "drums" that vibrate you all.... but .. the cello is heavenly above all-thank you for amazing music
Hubby sure knows his way around a fret board. Love how the whole band blends...
We were having a drink before Rhiannon's show in Dublin when she toured with this lineup for the first album, and met Hubby doing similar! Lovely guy :)
And an amazing gig!
Y'all are a national treasure. Thank you.
She has a weird very powerful yet reserved charisma. Mesmerizing voice!
What REAL TALENT SOUNDS LIKE...NO SMOKE NO MIRRORS. PURE SKILL
Never heard of this woman, or this group, not until now. What have I been missing? Good Grief! What a thing this is, just love them, love her.
agreed
Yep
Check out Carolina Chocolate Drops was the only African American string band in the country. Its the band she was in before going solo.
Rhiannon Giddens' voice is beyond compare. She gives me shivers.
What a singer to sing what a song with what a band... Thank you for making us fly for a few minutes.
Can't get enough of this artist. I'm going to buy everything she's done.
Don't miss Carolina chocolate drops !🙂
This lady has one of the most unique beautiful voices ever. She will definately be something to remember
This woman,s music is the best musical discovery Ah ever made!!
Ms. Giddens has the voice of an angel!
Thank you for the nod to Elizabeth Cotten--she's one of my heroes; been picking "Freight Train" since I was 14.
“The phrase 'shake sugaree' "means having a good time and is related to throwing sugar on the floor and then dancing on it, producing a percussive sound when the feet move on the sugared floor" and lest one believe I’m not impressed beyond anything by Rihanna’s rendition, you couldn’t be more wrong.

Wonderful!
Very interesting Douglas, love learning the history and references of old songs.
Merci ! ☺☺
Un mystère éclairci. ...
Un coin du voile soulevé. ..
Class good to know iam gona give that a bash thanks
That voice. Nothing like it. I have loved this song for decades, and what a gift and privilege this performance is. Also those cheekbones.
I heard part of a song you were singing with your unique banjo and was blown away. Why have I not herd of you before, being 70 yrs. old not sure where to look for artists anymore. Your talent like between folksy and storytelling and Simon and Garfunkel-ish with some unique vibratto and Dolly parton lite sound, like feminine and a wang too.....all in one. Great soundma'am, keep it up.
I never really had a favorite female vocalist until I heard Rhiannon Giddens sing. Her beauty and talent is beyond description. Incredible "Lady of Lyrics and Music".
*Dirk Hummer* Brother, that’s how I felt when I first heard Beth Gibbons. & ever since then, I’ve been trying to find other incredible Ladies of Lyrics & Music. Because of Beth Gibbons I’ve uncovered an array of vocal goddesses; I even listen to music which I don’t understand a single lyric, such as music by Japanese Folk vocalist Ikue Asazaki. I’m so glad that I found Giddens while trying to find ol’ Blues artists similar to the magnificent Blind Willie Johnson. Everyone that I know thinks I’m a hardcore rap lover because it’s what you will mostly hear me blasting whilst driving, & well I guess I am a hardcore rap lover; however, I’d like to think that I’m just a hardcore music lover. Amitābh, friend.
@@azoresplayah Beth is so phenomenal, and was the start of my love for exquisite female vocals too. I'd love to suggest Sierra Ferrell to you if you don't know her already, her voice is pure magic: ruclips.net/video/bRAlQ24bwM8/видео.html
Laura Nyro's first 4 albums are worth a taste test

unique, forgotten writer + singer from late '60s ... very much covered by others who had hits, yet

those are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th
she was a teenager still when the first came out
it is the most covered, but I'm not sure she had full control of the instrumentation choices on that one
nearly every song on the first got radio play at the time
this is something special too

When I hear artist that you never hear on the radio such as Samantha Fish, Beth Hart and now Rhiannon Giddens it's just amazing. All we here is this pop crap pushed down in our ears and soul. These beautiful wonderful powerful artist being hidden or denied. Wow I love this beautiful artists voice and music. True soul and talent. Thank God for RUclips and Spotify or I would not know who these beautiful ladies were
Hi Singular Man: I'm glad Spotify & RUclips turned you on to her; I also first heard her on RUclips. However, only the mega-pop stars make any more than mere pennies on Spotify. If you can afford it go buy her CDs or downloads and support the artists you love. Spotify is terrible for any but the biggest artists.
I came home from work Saturday night, turned on the TV to MPT and stopped when I heard her singing. I was done for the evening, foot tapping, couldn't stop or turn away. When she sang "Come Love Come, I was finished, how did I miss this earthly angel. Absolutely incredible. Where have I been?
You mentioned three of my favourite female artists. Thank you
Fund The drops a few Years ago. Thank God. Rhinnaon Is one of the carriers of the spirit. Heard this song with a couple of different versions . Ain 't that what folks is all about. Can't help But hear Delia. Another Killer Tune.
This whole group is a marvel. They're all wonderful.
I echo this statement.
Yes, I agree ... the WHOLE group is wonderfull.

RIGHT ON!
Hubby Jenkins is a tireless musicologists of American song.
When , dear Lord will folks learn to look at the color of such a soul without looking for skin tones. Love this lady & her team. God bless them continuously.

Just discovered Rhiannon Giddens. What a discovery especially during lockdown! Yipee!
Your life will never be the same. She brings inspiration and beauty everywhere she goes with the voice of an angel
One of the best songs of all time. Clean, honest and straight to the heart. Thanks for playing these songs and playing them the way you do. What a tribute.
Ms. Giddens is a world musical treasure. We need to hear/see more of her beauty and talent. Her music is unique, thought-provoking and heartfelt. RG has it all. With love.....RA
Such a beautiful voice. Love to hear Rhiannon sing. Lovely plus great backing group.
What a talent. She sings, plays and that voice. And, oh yes, what a beautiful person, inside and out.
1972 or 73 I sat in front of Elizabeth Cotton at a "Portable Newport Folk Festival" at Lehigh University. She played and sang. Years later in 2018 I sat in front of Rhiannon Giddens at a Hudson River Revival/Clearwater festival on the Hudson River. Carry it on women, carry it on !
The love of my life introduced me to this lady. Such bitter sweet memories
Blue grass treasure, very rare in our time, thought this was a lost art, I was wrong. It's still in our mist. Amen
Thank you, Ken Burns for making me aware of this wonderful singer.
She is magnificent! She is a living performing ethnomusicologist!
This song breaks my heart in the most beautiful way 😢
Elizabeth is smiling down on us, alive and well in Rhiannon Gidden's voice... What treasures and gifts they share with us - and we are blessed.
Elizabeth Cotten is a complete genius who helped inspire the Beatles, the Beastie Boys, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, and many others. Kudos to Rhiannon for helping shine a spotlight on her.
This song is said to be the inspiration to Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia when they came up with their song "Sugaree."
Such a fabulous performance and tribute to Elizabeth Cotton, I cried tears of joy!
I love this. They played it on an abolition radio show. Slavery Abolition radio show. It is one of my favorite songs they played. Brought me to tears. The lyrics, music, subject and your incredible voice made me cry. Brava!
I love so many things about Rhiannon Giddens. Everything from her magnificent voice. To her style of music. She is perfectly transendant, transcends Race and music genre. She is more than Beautiful! There is a million beautiful Ladies out there, but there is only ONE Rhiannon Giddens. What a BLESSING!
She is wonderful! Love Rhiannon Giddens.
I just love when this happens- I find something so rare and special on RUclips again! Many thanks for the sharing. May I live longer to appreciate this young lady and the group,
This is grand-fantastic. Sing it for everyone who ever felt this way, no matter what the reason
Beautiful music, sung with a beautiful voice from a beautiful person.
Rhiannon, keep on doing what you have been called to do, you are a treasure.
What a remarkable talent...
needs more exposure
I've been following Rhiannon Giddens for 20 years. Her talent is so wide-ranging, from singing, to playing a banjo, fiddle, or guitar. But her voice is what ties it together, and her research into the music, from Celtic to Appalachian to historically Black music, to what ever she sets her mind to! Love it all.
I've breathed good air for more than fifty years but ears have not heard this great music. It surpassed , genre, class, race, style. I'm in love with the music and the singer.
I just ran across this video while strolling through youtube. Rhiannon, wha an amazing voice.
Imagine just, imagine being able to perform like that just once in your life 💕💕💕💕
RHIANNON THIS IS WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm here until the end😊🎵🐓👍❤️
Never heard instruments and voice sound so beautiful together ..........Aug. 2020 !
Always fills me with such joy ….great song and a fantastic singer ❤
Her voice reaches deep into my soul
Had the extreme pleasure of seeing Elizabeth Cotten perform in a very small venue, the Bluebird Cafe, Santa Barbara, Calif., when she was in her 80s. Thank you Rhiannon for sharing her history. This is one of my favorite Elizabeth Cotten songs.
What beauty, what vocals...can't wait until she visits Western MASS again! Has something this country crys out for...passion and compassion with deep, feeling stories to share with us. We're listening Ms. Giddens.
Yes... this is late, but I have to say that, sometimes when Rhiannon sings...I break down and cry it's so beautiful...to me...
Who else is here in 2024 after hearing the Muireann Bradley version of this song?
This is a good version, but no one can come close to the Muieann Bradley!
I love hearing Rhiannon sing - beautiful voice, alley , beautiful woman but the young Irish girl muireann brnearly
the young Irish teenage phenomenon MuireannBradley is one hell of a guitarist. And to think she developed her amazing artistry in a folk musical tradition so different from the one she was born into and grew up surrounded by!

Love to hear hugely talented young singers keeping traditional music alive while simultaneously moving it forward.
Check out Carolina Chocolate Drops. The only African American string band. She was with them before going solo. Very very traditional music. Beautiful.
I have listened to all their stuff as well as everything RG has done elsewhere. Terrific stuff@@oldmanonthehill56
Goosebumps...
Every now and again the spirit leads you to a treasure, today I have been so led. Oh my Lordy, I love the way she embodies the songs she sing. She's so amazing at putting her emotions at work to deliver something so penetrating. She really takes me on the journey with her in this one. This is just such beautiful poetry :)
She makes every song she sings just a little bit better. Like her song, "At The Purchaser's Option".

@@trudesoto7807 rhiannon is honoring Ms.cotton and bringing her genius to 21st light and u seem to have a problem w/that because she is biracial.hypocrytical and bizzare.
@@im-already-tired-tomorrow - You need to stop pretending that my comments are about Rhiannon. They are about people like YOU and Bernard.
You can play games and try to make it about ME being prejudiced. But that's exactly what biased people do.
Rhiannon isn't bringing anything to the 21st century. Elizabeth Cotten's music is already known. And her records sell to those who value MUSIC and folk CULTURE.
*Rhianna is only bringing E.C's music to those who need a "beautiful" golden girl to perform it for them to stop and take notice....to value it. My point was that this VISUAL BIAS (and race bias) is still lingering after all these decade since E. Cotten died. People like you don't do this to Black men anymore, but you keep waiting for someone who looks like Scarlett Johansen to sing like Aretha. Or a bronze colored Barbie to sing like Nina Simone.... when it should be about the MUSIC.
*If you keep Re-discovering women like Elizabeth Cotten it means she isn't lost- she's getting thrown away while YOU and Bernhard look for something bright and shiney to catch your eyes.*
Flirts with perfection...
What a role model, amazing young woman, voice, lyrics, historian and full of knowledge,Simplemente,Especial!!!!!
A stunningly beautiful performance. Soul touching......Thanx so much

I love her cause she KNOWS exactly what she is singing. Which to me makes it even more special.
I've listened to this song over and over, dozens of times, and it still brings tears to my eyes.
So Beautiful.
I so love this tune. First heard it from The Grateful Dead, and have been smitten since. I also a Bob Dylan cover of Shake Sugaree live. But Rhiannon's is my current treasured cover of this beloved classic. So great - oh, lordy me.
she is an living legend, she dont know that, and all others dont know that yet, freakin awesome
Nothing more pure . ! . Thank you
She is standing there just announcing her song and I think I know one thing- it can never be that her singing could be even more beautiful then her face, and then she starts, and - oh! I was wrong!
If only the BRILLIANT Elizabeth Cotten had been a biracial woman. Maybe she wouldn't have had to be a maid " discovered " by her white employers. Maybe she would have gotten her due before she was a senior citizen. Same for all the other Negro female folk, blues, and country singers Rhiannon borrows from.
Sad. So much talent and human potential is lost in this old Beauty and color Content.
