to me, the top 3 are Fulltone OCD, Klon and Horizon Devices Precison Drive. I use copies of the former 2. Joyo Ultimate Drive for a high mid boost, EHX Soul Food for a bass/low mid boost (when I wanna beef up a Strat bridge pickup).
Only 20? Lot’s of cool sounds. Some better than others. A boost can make a lot of difference tone wise. I really liked the Egnator and the JPTR. Good vid, Robert!
I think the 10 band equalizer was a great boost plus the Goldsmith Smith and OCD Seemed to me to be the best choices for a high gain application. By the way I like your no frills approach to demo What you see is what you get I like that keep up the good work Robert.
I like the TC electronic spark. It is super versatile for any amp your using. I've used it for many amps tube & otherwise. It's so easy to dial in, no matter what amp you're using. I haven't found a boost so versatile myself.
Out of all the pedals, I like The Boss Blues pedal. I have used an Ibanez green pedal in the past. One of my friends had me check out his Bad Monkey pedal. Cool sound I must say.
That Ibanez Metal Mini definitely had some good crunch when added. I run 2 boosts, one thru the front of the amp and the other thru my effects loop. The TC electronics Spark mini works pretty good and it was cheap at the time, Fifty bucks(now 60 bucks). 20db of boost, definitely worth the money. Great video Robert as always!
I have the tube pilot love it the MXR 10 band EQ is awesome and I use an EP Booster or BOSS SD1 or Tube Monster tube overdrive good to see you backing doing content Robert
LOL Looks like you got pulled into the Fulltone OCD hype - twice! I once did too. versions 3 and 4, but sold them to guy in Alaska to help heat things up. Using Radial Tonebone TRIMODE in chain with whatever other pedal I am in the mood for, smooth, tight or growling.
My number one go to for boosting high gain amp is the BOSS SD-1 or earthquaker devices Plumes. MXR IlDiavlo is good to as a boost. Thanks for sharing. So many pedals makes it easier to picknew pedals to buy. I really have to get a BOSS Blues Driver
@@WilDBeestMF I know my pro tone pedals dead horse overdive is a TS. It is just funny I have seen the green pedals since the 80s yet for some reason never got one. So i think i will actually by an Ibanez TS
If you want to play Sabbath with it try to get a clone with an adjustable bass response like the Naga viper, Iommi signature boost or Ananashead boost. Unless you are looking for original ones, then ignore me and good luck
Blue Empress Parametric EQ with booster is the best I have used, it works for everything and you can forget the noisy Furman rack Eq too. I can set it like Iommi’s booster into a vintage style amp with a LP Jr. too. Bass, I have even seen people use one with electric violin, in the fx s-r In multitrack recorders…

Kids now are all wrapped up in what's the hottest trend current. Be individual and find your tone and groove. Screw the pressure of having what everyone else says is the best.
These sounded good, better than I thought. When I used tube amps in the 80’s/90’s (mostly in church for worship) all the tranny pedals I had like Rats, (even the Sonic Distortion) TS (the only one that had the full range low end was the Roger Mayer Voodoo 1) seemed to be thin in comparison (especially when I used my Boogie Mk3 Simulclass head )when I used them with the tube amps so I stuck with the rack mount Tube Works Blue Tube and black Real Tube Overdrive, for stuff to give me increased gain (not really metal but now and then high gain classic rock). Unfortunately that mentality made me reject buying an original version 1 Marshall Blues Breaker pedal and probably other gems that are now worth gold. 😖😢 I guess I don’t approach an already distorted amp with pedals that have their own voice, for home jamming I use Fulltone Fat Boost 3 and/or Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster as clean boost to give me more of what I have without losing lows. They even work especially good with my cream colored late 90’s 60 watt FET Roland Blues Cube. I use “amp in a box” stuff when I play through the clean channel and then switch to the lead channel for some variation which can be a little inferior but still good. I have a few of the pedals in this video. Metal Zone and Soul Food, and Bad Monkey (BM is a real favorite) but don’t like the SF now that I have the Wampler Tumnus. The Metal Zone through a clean channel still amazes me for what it does. The one pedal that’s a great boost that does have its own flavor is the Westminster Edwards Overdrive version 2 which is a Blues Breaker type pedal but not a complete clone. It gets cleaner unlike a really high gain pedal but has more gain than a TS.
A good pedal helps you get more focus and clarity with a high gain amp. A great example of this is how players use a boost pedal and EQ pedal with Rectos. I hate Rectos. Not my cup of tea. But a boost and EQ make them sound legible.
Bunch different here. DOD 250, fx55(does crazy shite for blues tone with fender)cheapie Delta lab green pedal and tech 21 stuff(gt2,Comptortion). Boss MZ. Change out quite often
I’ve actually had this exact question for my orange dark terror since I’m currently using a Klon clone right now on it and sometimes I’m not sure about it. Mainly depending on which guitar I use
I have a 100W Orange Dual Dark, and honestly, the only OD pedals that I use with it are the Boss OD as a clean vol boost, into an OCD for more vol, with a tinge of distortion...into the amp. I let the guitar and the amp form the sound. Those amps have plenty of gain on tap anyway. Vol boost is where its at.
[The amp by itself sounds great] In no particular order: MXR 10 EQ [you can never fail with an EQ]; Egnater Goldsmith; EHX Soul Food; Digitech Bad Monkey; Boss BD; Joyo Pure Boost. The rest of the pedals either added sizle, way too much bottom end or didn't do any relevant diference. It also depends on how you had them set for the most part. But in the end of the day an EQ is the winer [IMHO]
I actually RARELY use a boost with any of my amps unless I’m demoing something in that manner. Left to my own devices, the tone of my Laney IRT-Studio does not need any additional enhancement from external overdrives or distortions.
@@DBSG1976 I will put an OD in front of the amp, then MZ in the effects loop. So only 2 pedals. Let the metal zone do the rest. Try it. I put my amp settings at noon, then adjust to taste depending on my tuning at the time. D and C standard sound great.
The Metal Zone Anniversary is identical to the regular Metal Zone other than the housing. I just grabbed the Anniversary because it was closer. LOL Be careful running any distortion pedal THROUGH the effects loop. That typically doesn’t work well and turns into feedback city. Running it into your effects loop’s return input, which bypasses the amp’s preamp section altogether, is usually the best way to go in that instance.
The highwind adds some cool bite and aggression didnt like the Jackhammer it seems to muddy the tone , i tried to boost once with a guv'nor and it was a nightmare to set it right in my case The OCD 1.3 is really rich sounding, i loved it The Metalzone was surprisingly good I love to boost with preamps sometimes, the bogner ecstasy blue was incredibly nice to stack with a TS9.
Why do you even need a boost on a high gain amp? Tho, do you mean high distortion amp? Cause gain is just amplification and not distortion. Look at Soldanos cold clipper stage, signal out of it is about 1/2 of what goes in it. It decreases gain but increases distortion.
Boosts for high gain amps aren’t generally used for more gain. They’re used primarily to tighten up the bottom end. Notice most of the pedals that are demonstrated in this video have the level control all the way up and the gain control almost all the way down, if not all the way down.
Was the MXR il diavlo not good enough to make it in the video? I’ve had it for a long time now since I found it to be more flexible than a tube screamer and I think it does a good job and sounds good but I’m curious on why it didn’t make it in the list. Nice video, thanks!
I would not put the Laney IronHeart in a HiGain category, just how it behaves. Some of those drives you demoed have bass cutting capabilities, and you had symmetrical and asymmetrical drives that you dialed in to sound the same. A higain amp responds differently to those drives, you would feel it.
