    +1 on the "less gain is more" approach. Also should noted that if the amp is well behind it's edge of breakup a clean boost can be used as a simplified volume pedal (for solos, etc.)

    Ha! I always felt that I liked the sounds provided directly from the amp much more than anything that I got from any pedal in front. So propably I'm also more the boost-guy than the overdrive-guy... 😊Problem is: when you go for the real sweet tones, it gets loud. Very, very loud. Even if the power amp sports comparably laughable wattage like, let's say 15 - 20W... 😅 cannot use that at home...

    The major issue with boost is the lack of ability to control volume (defeating the purpose of a boost) at a certain distortion level by the amp that it pushes. You can really only control the volume on the amp (if available) or with an attenuator. You can very much use any overdrive pedal as a boost just by fiddling with the volume a bit more. That said, the overdrive will likely impart its characteristics on the sound as the intended clipping is done at the drive before being limited by the vol on the pedal. It's hilarious when people buy mythical overdrive to get a specific sound, then they tell me "it's so transparent"... Like really? You bought a 5000 Klon so it can sound like a 200 morning Glory that can sound like a 100 dollar boost? The online guitar community is a unique bunch.

    I tend to think of “clipping” as a way to add harmonic content, changing the timbre va a boost which just changes the amplitude.

    • @shirohige6024
      @shirohige6024 2 года назад +4

      And through doing so the amp does more of the clipping.

    • @BrianGay57
      @BrianGay57 2 года назад +1

      You are making the amp ad harmonics and with a pedal it can add them. If you love your amp’s distortion (hopefully you do) then a straight boost is perfect.
      If you don’t like your amp’s distortion, or just want a different type of distortion, then use an OD or distortion pedal. There’s no right or wrong, just tonnes of cool options to play with!
      I have amps that I like the distortion of, so I tend to set them at the edge of breakup and just push them to varying degrees for more or less breakup.
      I actually use OD pedals for this, sometimes with the gain rolled back and the volume rolled up, so that they act more like a boost. When close to amp breakup, the OD “colors” things less as well.
      If I wanted to “emulate” many different guitar tones for an event band type show, I would go with a clean amp as a pedal platform, or better, a digital profiler that can sound like many different amps.

    A well done, non-overly technical explanation of two different audio events. And bravo for addressing the "you don't need as much distortion as you think" issue. Some of my favorite "heavy" tones are from the 80's era Judas Priest albums. And of course, Malcom Young used tones just this side of country clean and got a huge tone in the context of AC/DC.

    ALL of these Gain "Rules" get thrown out the window the moment you ditch the 12AX7 . . .
    My search began with chasing Trey Anastasio's tones . . he runs a massive pedalboard. Then I saw his V1 preamp tube - a NOS 12AU7 by Telefunken. So I rebiased and went 12AU7, even built a 12AU7 preamp just to buffer between pedals and whatever PWR amp I want to use.
    12AX7 has 5x the Voltage Gain . . however, 12AU7 has 2x-3x the current gain. Current = that liquid type sound that you hear with say Angus Young or Trey or Billy Gibbons. That liquid type comes mostly from pushing the PWR tubes to their end
    HOWEVER!
    You can get that same sound by pushing a 12AU7 with an already clipped signal.
    In essence, IF you are running a pedalboard, you are using a solidstate preamp > tube preamp. You are running a hybrid preamp. So that - Pedalboard = Modular Preamp
    I now think of my pedals + preamp tubes - all together as ONE Preamp. Mix m Match PWR Amps + speaker cabs.
    IF you love the sound of ur guitar + preamp . .
    I went with a Class D PWR Amp + very flat keyboard speaker for one rig . . and I gotta say - it seems to cover more variety of sonic territory than anything else

    How can I push the new Dgt prs 15 watt amp into the Katana territory. How you can strum a power cord and you have sustain for days. I can’t see buying tons of pedals to make a $1800 amp sound better. But I guess that’s what our forefathers did. Why can’t we get a boutique amp with reverb and delay and chorus built in. I’m starting to think solid state might not be so bad!

My favorite in your video is the booster and amp alone...plenty enough sustain, and lots of the note preserved...ie the melody. Know what I mean? You can also put an EQ pedal in front of an overdrive to tweak how it reacts to your guitar. If your overdrive sounds a little too muddy, notching out some low mids can make a big difference.
    But personally, I just don't care for the "edge of breakup" amp tone. My gain settings tend to be very "all or nothing" because I like having access to that buttery smooth super clean tone you get from amps with very high headroom, maybe with a hint of tremolo or vibrato on top.

    • @myoriginalname

    • @Jaspertine
      @Jaspertine 2 года назад +2

      @@myoriginalname I'm certainly not gonna bad mouth either of those pedals, because they are fantastic. (a friend of mine used to Rock a Jackhammer and *chef's kiss*)
      But the built in EQ on on the pedals is usually to sculpt the tone after it's been clipped. Whereas cutting some low mids before the OD reduces the amount that those frequencies are clipped in the first place.
      That's why so many guitarists use tube screamers as their boost pedal, because the screamer pushes the upper mids, ensuring they clip first and more prominently that the rest of the frequency range. (it's also why tube screamers can sound nasal if your tone doesn't actually have any low end problems)
      But hey, tone is a balancing act. There's no wrong options, just undesirable results.

That was my 2nd chance with him. Mike Landau and Robben Ford got fooled by him as well. So Mason as some don’t know took a BBE Wah gooped it and put his name on it. Tripled the price and got caught. Many forgave him and many didn’t forgive him and he continues to lie. He destroyed Joe Bonamassa’s pedalboard it cost $2,0000. Dave Friedman fixed it for I believe $4-500. Hmm. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. Dr Mason. I’ll give him one thing he doesn’t go away. Rhett uses him. Many have questioned him as to why. He said because he understands the situation and I guess he trusts him. Check back on the board’s Mason makes. None work correctly after a short time and are taken to someone with a real EE degree. Mason says he has one but the college he went to doesn’t offer an EE degree. Compulsive lying is hard to stop if that’s your thing. I believe in honesty. He cost me money and it is the last time. Good luck Mason the wah wasn’t copied though. It literally was a BBE Wah.

    the « less drive is more » thing is absolutely true, but sometimes, pushing an amp that is already at full gain and full volume a bit further (a lot) will make you discover territories of tones that you would have never heard before. A boost at full volume in front of a tweed deluxe which is already at full volume will make it sound like it’s falling apart in the best way possible (think « Hey Hey My My (Into the Black) » by Neil Young, absolutely killer tone) :)

    nice.. that's why I usually use my overdrives more as boost..to shape the eq more towards mids and the "tone" of the "cut through". I love to ad a clean boost to the mix also.. like the mxr micro amp or something like that.

    I’m a mainly metal guitarist and I totally agree, I’ll put a boost (or an overdrive with very little gain) in front of my amp and it really tightens up the sound; it’s great.

    MicroAmp, Zvex SHO, and 250 derrivitives like the JHS Pre , or the ( more ODish 250 based) EQD White Light are all you need( though I've always also had a Ge Treble Booster)
    I want real clipping, I'll take a Fuzz circuit everytime.

    I think one of the reasons people use too much gain is because it makes playing easier. Kind of like the days when I'd turn the delay pedal up to cover my inefficiencies. The tone is very liquid with a high gain setting but I have found the best tones come from backing off the gain and it also forces me to be a better player.

    • @t.r.backenbaum7325
      @t.r.backenbaum7325 2 года назад +1

      For me it's the opposite: When I'm playing with a "huge" sound with delay and gain the mistakes I make become more noticable too. With a lot of gain everything becomes more amplified and you have to pay more attention to unwanted string noise and muting and the larger amount of sustain can sound odd depending on the song/phrase

    • @PaulWegmann
      @PaulWegmann Год назад

      @@t.r.backenbaum7325 I agree, more distortion means more problems. I think the fact that mades “play better” is compression, not distortion. Compression helps to make our picking sounds more consistent, so we feel more confidently.

    If anyone is interested in trying some boosts and is willing to install the circuit boards (pots included) into an enclosure, I’ve got loads of boost-type circuits stacked up in my ever-growing stock of effects pedal builds. I’ve built all kinds of boosts, from treble to full range, jfet, mosfet, IC and so on, as preamp, straight boost, and all things in between. Most, if not all, get the job more than done and add lots of snap to your signal. If needed I can throw them into an enclosure for you, but I know I’ll be less inclined to open the flood gates if it means I must drill the enclosures to house a million circuits. What Rhett says is true when it comes to boosts, and since I can’t possibly use all the circuits I’ve built, I figured I’d give the generosity route a go. Otherwise, I just have to put them on heavy rotation and/or use them as boosts in multi-effect pedals in the future. Aloha, D 🤙

    • @danielmiller2886
      @danielmiller2886 10 месяцев назад

      That is very generous of you. I am interested in building them as well, I just dont have the time, nor do I have a tube amp; I play at church directly into the sound system. What type of amp are you using?

    • @Damaraja
      @Damaraja 10 месяцев назад

      @@danielmiller2886 Aloha, Daniel. I mainly use my Princeton to test my circuits. Sometimes my Champ, or non-tube amps like a Katana, various old Guyatone solid states, etc. But I typically go for the tubes. The good news is that there are a lot of good quality boosts available for relatively cheap. If you are really looking to tinker but lack the time, you might consider using a breadboard to build prototypes directly from schematic. It takes very little time, once you get the hang of it, and parts/components are fairly inexpensive. Hopefully you can get around to it eventually. It is good fun (though not without its frustrations) and opens up a world of new circuits. If you do get into it and want some recommendations, feel free to hit me up. I’ll try to help. ✌️🙏🤙

      I just started running a Hudson Electronics Broadcast into an old stereo solid state Carvin power amp with a Benson Geranium Boost and Wampler Tumnus Deluxe in front of all that. Using a Gigrig Humdinger to split the signal, the wet effects come after the Broadcast, just going into one side of the power amp and the other side dry. Cab has an Eminence Cannabis Rex and a Vintage 30. It works very well.
      I was originally just going to use this rig for practice and writing and save the tubes for recording (as they are a bit difficult to come by right now), but it sounds great and I have been recording with it as it is.
      Very cool sound imo

  • @florisvanlingen
    @florisvanlingen 2 года назад +2

    As shown in this example the boost does sound better than an overdrive. But what's best is relative to what amp, pedals, pickups you have and how much gain you are aiming for.
    Some amps really start to get a flubby low end when being pushed at max gain. In this case an overdrive might work to tighten up the low end or a boost with some extra controls.
    When going into a really clean amp a boost might just increase the volume without adding much breakup, in this case an od will probably work better.

    i think we're comparing apples to oranges here
    booster makes the sound louder and "distorts" in a very different way.
    i think the fact the overdrive pedal is more compressed makes the sound more behaved than the loose boost. it's a more defined distortion and that's positive.

    hey rett, isn't the bb preamp a clean boost pedal actually? like if you put gain at zero it shouldn't really affect the tone of your amp at all.. that's how I use it at least, gain at zero, volume at where I feel it starts to break up the clean channel a little bit, and as far as EQ I try to get it as transparent as possible, maybe with a little bit of treble

  • @Valvey789

    If you're using overdrive pedals instead of overdriven tubes to get your distortion it raises the question of why use a tube amp at all instead of a more orthopedically friendly solution. This may be why fuzzy heavy metal bands mostly use amp modelers.

    I generally prefer to have an amp that I like the drive of, and then push it to get MORE of that sound.
    Of course one needs multiple amps for different situations to do that. I do mostly low volume electric lead for acoustic singer songwriters at coffee house levels. So I use very low wattage amps for that. I often don’t even need a boost.
    If I ended up with a higher wattage amp that is too loud to get toob distortion without endangering the front few rows, I will go with an OD.
    Understanding gain staging and room acoustics really helps one to deal with most situations. Coffee shop gig with a borrowed TR, pedal into a clean amp. Low wattage amp at a jam with an enthusiastic drummer? Ad a mic, etc..
