    In case you were wondering why so many people were holding candles and mourning for Jack, those are the slaves that Jack freed. While working for the East India Trading Company, Jack had to transport slaves but instead he freed them. So Cutler Beckett burned the Wicked Wench (Jack’s ship) and branding Jack as a pirate. This ended with the deal he had with Davy Jones which saved the ship (The Black Pearl) which is why it’s black and Jack its captain.

    This is a deleted scene from the 3rd movie, but it's best to tell you now. The reason Becket has it out for Jack is because he hired Jack to transport some "merchandise" without telling Jack what it was. It turned out to be slaves. Jack set them free instead, which caused Beckett to lose a lot of money.

      England was up to its eyeballs in the slave trade. They just prefer to talk about the Englishmen who fought against slavery and how it was abolished rather than admit that they were involved in the slave trade in the first place (re recent debates as to whether streets and pubs and statues named after or depicting merchants who were also slave traders should be taken down, there are plenty who say they should stay).

    • @LethalOwl
      @LethalOwl 2 года назад

      @@agenttheater5 The English were among the last to join the slavetrade and also among the first to abolish it. It was the Africans themselves who sold their weaker neighbours into slavery. To this day, slavery still exists in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. You can cry about the English all you want, but they remain the heroes for many tribes and nations around the world who'd otherwise be enslaved by their neighbours.
      Slavery's bad regardless of who's doing it, but pretending only the English and Americans were the baddies in this is ridiculous. Last to enter the slavetrade and first to abolish it. They're saints compared to most African nations that existed at the time.

    Random fun fact: one of the reasons people drink less water back in these times, especially while sailing, was because water went stagnant when kept in barrels at sea after a long period of time. So they would mix rum or other booze into it to kill the bacteria. They'd call this grog, and would also eventually start mixing in lime juice as well to fight scurvy.

    Johnny's "I got a jar of dirt" bit was unscripted, so everyone was confused. You can see Orlando Bloom giving a "WTF?" glance at Gore Verbinski there.

    The reason the compass didn't work for Jack was because what he wants most is to be free of Davy Jones.
    But to do that, he needs the key.
    Which is kept on Davy Jones' person.
    So he's stuck in a paradox

    • @Jirodyne
      @Jirodyne 2 года назад +3

      Not actually True, if I remember. The reason why the Compass is always wonky is cause "What he wants most" is always change, all the time. Jack is a man of Fleeting Fancy, where his whims change by the second, cause he lives in the moment. So every single moment, what he wants most is always changing priority.

    • @MrGBH
      @MrGBH 2 года назад

      @@Jirodyne if that were true, then why would thd compass ever work for him at all?

    • @Jirodyne
      @Jirodyne 2 года назад +2

      @@MrGBH It very, and I do mean VERY rarely works. We only ever see it work for him 3 times in the original trilogy movies.
      First, to find the Black Pearl the first time in the first movie, and thus the Island Barbossa was on.
      The second, near the end of the second movie, he checks it before returning to the ship desire unknown but whatever he desired was on the ship, before being cuffed and then killed on that same ship.
      And finally for the third time at the end of the third movie, at the very very end, it points to a bottle of rum right next to him that he picks up to drink before it starts going crazy again and the movie cuts to black as the ending.
      The first one was to find the ship he is obsessed with, so he can trade Will for the Pearl. The second, we don't know the desire, only the location it pointed. And the third he wanted Rum.
      Every other time we see him pull it out, it's always spinning wildly. Even when finding the Davy John's Key, that scene shows him unable to point correctly the right direction, it changing all the time, and had to go to the Witch to figure out where to go, and use Elizabeth for finding the Chest.
      Other than the very first time used in the first movie to find the Pearl, the Compass has NEVER allowed Jack to go anywhere that progresses the story or where he 'wants' to go.

    • @MrGBH
      @MrGBH 2 года назад +1

      @@Jirodyne That's a lot of words you just used which basically say the exact thing I said. When he knows what he wants, it points to it. When what he wants is unclear or is near something/body he wants to be away from, it spins wildly.
      He looks at it several times during the first movie, and each time it spins a bit, but then settles on the direction of the Pearl.
      During the next two movies, see my original, comment.
      During the fourth movie, he leads the entire expedition to find the fountain. The whole plot depends on it.
      And nobody wants to even think about the fifth movie.

    • @Jirodyne
      @Jirodyne 2 года назад +2

      @@MrGBH Your point in the OP was that 'It doesn't work because what he wants most is a Contradiction, to it doesn't work'. But that is NOT how works, as I point out. It's what he wants AT THAT MOMENT that VERY SECOND. Which is why at the end of the Third movie he opens it and checks, what does he want most and where is it. And figures out it's a bottle of rum, horray, and then starts spinning, because he has no other wants or desires that are 'The Most' at that specific time.
      "what he wants most is to be free of Davy Jones. But to do that, he needs the key. Which is kept on Davy Jones' person. So he's stuck in a paradox"
      It would NOT point to the Key. Cause the Abstract emotion of Fear is NOT an actual object. Elizibeth in the second movie, when handed the compass, wants to find/save Will. The compass would point DIRECTLY to Will. This is why Jack Lies and Tricks her, saying finding the Chest will save Will. So her Desire Switched from saving Will to finding the Chest. Something JACK couldn't do himself. He needed HER to go it. And unlike with him, it does not spin around. It pointed right to the chest immediately.
      If it worked as you said, going off the abstract ideas, it would point to the chest ANYWAYS, without Jack telling her it will save Will, cause that is how the Movie plays out, going to the chest means she meets up with will. It would point there anyways. But it DOESN'T. Jack had to TELL HER to look for the chest, and made it her desire by saying it will save Will from Davy Jones, lying to her as it would NOT do that, as seen at the end of the third movie, the threat to his heart does NOT save Will.
      It has to be an object/person. And you have to want that object/person. There is no situation not a single one, where the Compass leads to somewhere because of something Abstract like "Freedom from X person', or 'To save people', or 'Greatest Treasure'. You have to already know about said object/person, and it has to actually exist. That is what we see in these movies.
      If it worked on the Abstract, then when Jack desired Freedom from Davy Jones, it would have pointed towards Will and started the entire movie, and not be spinning wildly. What more, it's ALWAYS Spinning wildly, even in the other movies for him. Secondly, pretty sure in the 4th movie the Compass is not used to find the fountain of Youth, he stole Barbossa's Sea Charts to go to the hidden location.

    Davy Jones is one of the most tragic characters in the franchise. Would his story have remained the same if the captain of the Dutchman had been a real captain (Van Straaten)? Hans Zimmer's theme going from the music box to the organ sounds awesome. I am also glad that this part continues the theme of the previous film that the characters take advantage of each other.

    How Barbosa came back will be answered in the third film. The one scene that is always intriguing to me is when Elizabeth tricks Jack to leave him behind. To me, she has become a full-fledged pirate by that point. When Elizabeth falls off the cliff near the start of the first movie, we see her fall into the water in the background as Jack tells the two redcoats “…and then they made me their chief” which is potentially the backstory to his situation on the island here. That line itself is a reference to a 90s British sketch show called The Fast Show, where it was spoken by a recurring character who delivered rambling, disconnected anecdotes.

    While people are pointing out the “jar of dirt” scene being improvised by Depp with the cast being confused over what was going on. Likewise for the genuine reaction of the cast not being aware Geoffrey Rush would be coming down the steps and were expecting Anna-Maria.
    One I noticed myself was the “swinging bone cages” scene. Director Gore Verbinski did trick them more than once onset with those other scenes, but for the cages? He only told the cast they’d be swinging back and forth repeatedly, but did not tell them of any sudden drop (of course, the drop wasn’t even very high behind the scenes). 😆

    The scene where Elizabeth chained Jack to the Pearl, instead of being fearful and surprised, Jack is glad that she is the one to finally pull the trigger. She even said previously that she’s tired of wobbly-legged rum-soaked pirates. So when she betrayed Jack with no remorse, Jack officially branded her as a pirate. That’s classic irony if you ask me.

    5:38 if you remember the first movie when Norrington grabbed jacks wrist and saw his tattoo, underneath it tho is the letter “P” brand it on him it’s because jack worked as privateer for the east trading company before and Beckett give jack the Pearl cuz it was the company’s ship but wasn’t actually named the Pearl and that was even before he ever meet barbooza will he knew who he was and in the Novel Beckett ordered jack to go ship some cargo which was basically slaves and jack ended up setting them free .
    Beckett found out what jack did he arrested him and give him that burn and sunk the Pearl in front of him and jack jumped in the water trying to safe it and that’s when Davy Jones found him and jack made the deal with him that if he saves he Pearl he would be caption for 13 years and then join his crew after so Jones raised the Pearl

    I think Davy Jones can track jack because of his hat. In wicca/voodoo people that have protective spells often use a personal item (typically small trinkets like rings, pendants, etc) and I think that his hat is his literal charm. Please, watch the last movie, I promise it's worth it. LoL

    Interesting fact, sailors drank liquor more often than water bc on long voyages water would turn sour while rum stayed (relatively) clean. This goes for people in ports as well bc it was difficult to find clean water sources in big cities and most people of the time weren’t aware that boiling water would sterilize it.

    (SPOILERS) (Part 1) For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with.
    Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free.
    And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! 😕 The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better.
    Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will.
    She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3!
    As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies.
    Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1??
    As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die..
    Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth.
    Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈
    when Will challenging Davy Jones.
    Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key?
    Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏
    As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️
    (Part 2) Dead man’s chest has a very simple plot.. Jack sparrow is the master at controlling peoples hearts to get what he wants and out of a situation. He screwed over Will so Jack can save himself… But it worked in his favor for his reunion to meet his father.. William even told Jack you screwed me over but because of you I was reunited with my father after such a long time.. Elizabeth was caught in Jack’s illusion of trusting him to get Will back that had nothing to do with him which was a lie. Will being on Davy Jones ship had everything to do with Jack lol. Jack left on good terms with Elizabeth and William in the first movie. Elizabeth had every right to believe Jack…. It was Jack who took advantage of her feelings to find the chest by telling her if you want to find will you need to find the chest of Davy Jones! But it was an illusion so Jack can get closer to find the chest of Davy Jones to control him. But to also go back and save will after Jack got what he wanted.
    If people don’t understand these movies that’s their problem. But I understand every movie! That’s why I rank 2>3>1 ☠️☠️☠️
    (Part 3) I’m sorry to break it to you but the curse of the Black Pearl is my least favorite in the trilogy. I rewatch the trilogy every few months. And to me I just don’t find it as deep or as interesting compared to dead man’s chest or at worlds end.
    Curse of the Black Pearl is still a well written amazing film. It’s just I’d rather choose having William struggle on trying to save his father from Davy Jones along side using very clever strategy and dialogue during the dice liar game on Davy Jones to get key from him.. VS William in the first movie who just wants to save Elizabeth….
    I love darker storytelling and when steaks are becoming higher! Dead man’s chest gave me everything.. Elizabeth was a useful damsel in stress female lead in the first movie. But I would rather choose her character development in the second movie compared to her in the first movie.
    Elizabeth pulled a gun on Beckett’s face. She went on her own journey to save William. Who also taught her how to defend herself with swords. And that paid off well at the end of the movie! Her development is miles better in (Dead mens chest) compared to herself in the first movie who just takes the fall for William to protect him from Barbosa.
    Jack sparrow’s dialog and clever intelligence grew (MORE) in (dead men’s chest) and (at worlds end) and you cannot convince me otherwise. If people think he became a joke after the first movie that sounds like a (YOU PROBLEM) Jack sparrow is pretty intelligent in the second movie on being a master at manipulation and taking advantage of people around him to get himself out of a situation in order to save his life and possibly everyone else’s. He just knows how to play the game like that….. You can’t trust Jack sparrow on making the right decisions because he’s supposed to be ahead of the game on everyone’s perspective on him. If Jack was easy to follow with answers he wouldn’t be Jack sparrow lol.
    Not to mention what’s with this opinion on people saying Jack sparrow was someone you should not mess with?? Jack sparrow literally wants you to mess with him so he can use that to his advantage to pull you in under his string, for you to doubt him in order to rise up above everyone else. You were caught in his illusion the entire time so he can be superior at the end of the situation and screw you over. If Jack sparrow was someone to NOT mess with, just like Davy Jones.. Then you wouldn’t be caught in Jack sparrow’s illusion on being the worst pirate in the world..
    No seriously if Jack had the same fear approach as Davy Jones…. Then all you would have to do were to look at Jack sparrow for a few seconds and be so scared of him, Everyone would just run away.. literally what’s the fun in that for Jack Sparrow?! If he was someone to not mess like people claim. Then (WHY) do people keep on assisting 100% on messing with Jack Sparrow?? Please answer that man lol. That literally makes no sense…
    You have to mess with Jack sparrow to be caught in his illusion of doubtfulness so he can be the superior person in the situation and also getting out of a dangerous situation. He literally pulls you in as a fool because people were messing with them. Like come on?! 😂

    The Kraken was epic. Love that theme.
    If you look in the earlier scene with Jack getting the jar of dirt, when Tia Dalma goes to grab it, Jack the Monkey climbs up to where a body is lying on a table. The boots are Barbossa's. Since Tia Dalma is very voodoo, most likely resurrected that way.
    The whole crew was told that it was Anamaria(the black pirate played by Zoe Saldana in COTBP)that was going to take them to Worlds End. Their reactions to Geoffrey Rush/Barbossa were real.
