The underwater boat trick where they hold the boat upside down to breath as they walk along the ocean floor is actually possible. But the boat needs to be heavy enough that it doesn’t float to the surface.
See, this is why I love Norrington. He's expected to be the stereotypical "evil British officer" that happens in almost every period film that has anything to do with Britain, but he's actually a decent guy. He genuinely cared about Elizabeth as a person, and not as a prize. So, as long as she's happy and taken care of, he knows when he's beaten.
Agree, it's very sad to see his death. He didn't even know about everything too. He's just trying to get his job back only to realize that it was a mistake. His sacrifice genuinely shocked me
He had an interest in Elizabeth when she was a child. Even though he waited till she was of age. He still is a creep for waiting for a kid for marriage. Still a complicated and great story throughout the first 3 films.
Norrington’s comment at the end was insinuating two things. -He knows that Will made the sword and did it well. With great care and devotion. -Just like how much care and devotion he put into the sword he wants Will to put it “every aspect of his life.” Meaning his relationship with Elizabeth. In other words.. “Please take care of her and cherish her.”
@@artsysabs Yeah, he is. I thought he was a douche when I were smaller. But I did not know english at all back then, nor did I understand the induendos OR meaning behind big words and sentences. So to me he locked like a tardfish.
"This is the coolest bad guy ever!" YES, Norrington is a GREAT secondary antagonist because he has a lot of traits we don't normally see in a villain. He is reasonable, loyal, level-headed, smart, and even empathetic. He has ambition but isn't prideful or vain. He has integrity and cannot be bribed with money or power. A very interesting guy who doesn't get enough credit because of how amazing Barbossa is as the "tragic villain."
if it hasn't been mentioned yet, jack sparrow stumbles around when he walks on flat land because he has sea legs as a result of always being on ships which is why when he's on ships he walks normally; an ingenious detail thought up by johnny:]
There's a theory that it's because his brain has been boiled from him being dehydrated for so long. You can notice it getting worse with each movie. Look up "Film Theory Jack is Dying" it's a pretty interesting video
@@katherinesproat1081 Technically everybody is dying the minute they stop growing... and considering he's been alive for five films, I doubt that theory holds water (phrasing intended).
Disney originally was hesitant about Johnny Depp's performance as Jack Sparrow but it paid off seeing that he is the reason this franchise was such a success. Depp also got his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor in 2004 for this and it was well deserved because Johnny Depp was perfectly casted
Playing Jack has affected him, though. Watch interviews of how he talked before and how he talks now. He put on the Jack voice and now can't turn it off.
They were not just hesitant, they downright hated Johnny Depp's interpretation of Captain Jack Sparrow. Johnny and Johnny alone deserves all the credit for building the character of Captain Jack Sparrow from the ground up and netting Disney over 5 billion dollars
Oh, Michael Eisner hated Johnny’s improvisations. It’s amazing the movie got made considering it. He famously exclaimed, “He’s ruining the movie!” Those improvisations are what people love and remember most about Depp’s character.
29:50, Not sure if you missed it or it was cut out, but when Will says "I'm not obsessed with treasure," Jack responds "Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate." Because Elizabeth is Will's treasure.
If I remember correctly walking the boat underwater didn't work. Not because it wouldn't create an air pocket, but because 2 people aren't strong enough to hold the boat down.
Umm ... Didn't see the myth busters episode that covered this, but while the actual shots in the movie may not have been accurate, this would totally work, the same way diving bells (barrels) have worked since 300 BC. Neutral buoyancy (no floating or sinking) happens when the weight of the water displaced equals the weight of the boat and it's contents. Since only part of the boat floating is under water, if you flipped the boat over and only let in a bit less than that amount of air, the boat would be gently sinking and you would actually have to hold it up slightly while keeping your head in the air pocket ... also getting where you need to go before the CO2 levels got too high.
@O. B. I repeat ... boyancy happens when the wieght of the boat/bucket and its contents eqauls the weight of the water displaced. if the weight of the water is less than the weight of the boat/bucket and its contents, it sinks ... to make the upside down boat sink you just reduce the amount of air trapped ... but there can still be trapped air. The amount shown in the movie? ... no way to know without knowing all kinds of variables, but I suspect it is too much. That said it does work ... they have been doing this for litereally thousands of years.
@O. B. Yup, I have no doubt that it would take a load of 2000 lbs to sink that boat. Sounds completely reasonable. And if that boat was half full of water it would take less to sink it. The question is, how full of water does it have to be to sink? ... and the answer is not entirely full, because the boat and it's contents weigh something. You turn the boat upside down, and there is that much air (the amount that was empty before it sank of its own accord) that can still be in it and still have it sink. If you have a balsa wood boat the boat material itself has negative buoyancy, and there will never be a chance of an air space. If you have an oak boat there will be more air. As much as in the movie? Probably not, but from what I can see in the clip there that seems to be what they are testing.
An interesting thing I read once was someone saying most people think Jack walks funny because he’s always drunk - when in fact, he walks perfectly fine while on ships. But on land, he has sea legs. Because he lives on ships.
In this film Barbosa was the villain, not the Commodore. The Commodore was just the obstacle in Elizabeth and Will's relationship. I'm glad they didn't make him a bumbling idiot.
It was pretty uncommon back then to have the romantic rival to be a decent person, too. The movie defied every expectation I had, and while getting older can be a bummer I'm happy I got to see so many classics in theaters (LotR trilogy, Pirates, The Incredibles, The Dark Knight, etc.). Was a great time for film, where they'd found that sweet spot between practical effects and CG while also really focusing on telling a great story. Hoping we get another film renaissance soon.
@@kenjutsukata1o1 US movie industry is a decaying dying beast, infested with idelogues, whose first second and third priority are to push their political message. Things like compelling story or characters are complete afterthought, if any of them are competent enough to write them at all. Hoping for renaissance soon, is like hoping for family cat that's dead and buried to come back to life. In time, new competitors will spring up, since there is a huge market not serviced and thus huge piles of money left on the table, but it will take time for those to grow good enough. It would take way more drastic measures, than what holywoke is willing to or capable of taking, to save this monstrosity. And in the mean time, it will have enough influence and power, to make competing with it very difficult.
Not anymore. Disney is dying because of ESG and DEI hiring policies and is deeply rooted in every aspect of the company. Disney, actually the whole of HOLLYWOOD, is now bankrupt of creatives, replaced by inept insecure people who make their identity their whole personalities!
The scene with the dog in with the keys in his mouth at the jail, the scene where the Black Pearl shoots cannonballs at the town and the scene where he drinks wine as a skeleton and it goes through him are all scenes in the ride at Disneyland.
[Edited] I think they redesigned a couple aspects of the town on the ride, but for decades, there was the town takeover scene with the pirates chasing women through the streets and houses (with one pirate Running from a desperate woman in a humorous twist); the drunken guy in the pig sty; and the ships firing at each other. This being RUclips, you can actually search for the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride and there's possibly a video showing the ride Before the changes. You can compare it to those filmed Afterwards. No one ever seems to mention this: At the same time POTC: COTBP came out, Disney released another movie based on one of it's beloved attractions -- The Haunted Mansion. With none other than Eddie Murphy, if I recall correctly. Admittedly, I don't remember anything about The Haunted Mansion, except people saying it was meh, even With Murphy's star power. Apparently, no one else does either because it wasn't really successful at all. It was a surprise bomb with POTC becoming a surprise hit. This, kids went from being interested in dinosaurs to pirates...if I'm getting the timeline right. haha
@@LA_HA My siblings and I like the Haunted Mansion movie. Granted it was cheesy and not as good as the Pirates movie, but still fun. And those two rides were my favorite. I still remember that the Haunted Mansion ride had this graveyard that you walk through while waiting in line, and the gravestones have funny things on them. One of them said "I told you I was sick." hahaha
@@AhavaMath [Edited] Admittedly, I never saw it, but maybe we should see if they'll react to it this Halloween season. It would be fun to check it out. But, even if they do, I Still might because how bad can it be? Right? And Yes, New Orleans land has great rides, places to eat, and shops. It's one of my favorites to just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Aw, I miss Disneyland before it became overcrowded and uber expensive
Johnny Depp wanted to create a character who is in the middle between comic/animated characters and live action characters, so that it serves as a transition for children between those 2 genres; and I think it worked out beautifully
I would say Norrington was "kinda okay with it" was because he didnt want to marry Elisabeth just for her status - which would be stereotypical. He wanted to marry her because he truely liked her. When Elisabeth chose Will Turner instead of him he was hurt but still wanted her to be happy. I love that plotline actually!
Love how you guys get to experience this proper. The first 3 are their own contained trilogy, the following two are kind of like side stories with Sparrow. Will be interested to see what you think about it all. This first one is almost perfect in every way it has a real movie magic to it.
the opening with Sparrow is movie magic, first time i got stung by the magic was when i was a kid and watched Legend with Tom Cruise, it had all the checkboxes for a 8 year old kid on christmas morning.
@@kenjutsukata1o1 i agree. The first one had a happy ending. I consider it a classic and I absolutely love it. The second one is my favorite and third is just a good sequel to end the “trilogy”.
The skeletal hand grabbing Jack through the jail cell is honestly one of my favourite plot reveals. the CGI for the time holds up perfectly and it's a way better demonstration of what kind of "curse" the movie title was implying than if they had a ton of exposition.
Along with surprising kids in hospitals as Jack Sparrow, he has also gone to Disney more than once and went into the PoTC ride as Jack Sparrow and surprised the riders. So fun!
16:53 In the Golden Age of Piracy, the pirates were often famous and written about as if they were rock stars (part of the reason JD based his look on several mannerisms on Keith Richard), so they had "fans." And there was a lot written about the Brethren of Pirates and what the pirate code was. Not everyone knew it, ofc, but for those who were fascinated and read about them--as Elizabeth obviously has--the knowledge could prove invaluable. 33:36 Gibbs told them to use case shot and langrage. Case shot is clusters or cans of small iron or lead balls (also known as grapeshot or canister shot). Langrage refers to scraps of metal used to fire at an enemy in naval warfare. There were several more kinds of things than cannon balls that could be fired from the guns, and pirates in particular employed several different types of shot shince what they generally wanted to do was disable a ship so it could not run away. Chain shot was often used in order to disable masts, and grapeshot/case shot was particularly useful in filling a sail full of holes so it was no longer effective. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cannon_projectiles
Jeffery rush is so good as barbossa! That last line 'i feel....' with an expression of utter bliss at just feeling something, anything at all after 10 years of nothing is just great acting.
The reason why the Black Pearl is so fast? It was called the Wicked Wench back when Jack inherited her. She was sunk by Cutler Beckett. Jack made a deal with Davy Jones who then raised her from the depths and made her the fastest ship on the seas. There’s ALOT of magic in this world that simply exists in the world.
Yup it's the same "natural" light magic that you find in Tolkiens work. It's not quite some Dr Strange/ D&D waving hands and spectacle. It's ingrained in will and thought and purpose and somethings creation. Part of why i adore these movies. The world, especially on the mystical/ magical end, shows a deep care and love from those that created it.
When this movie first came out, everyone was dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow at the Renaissance. 😂 He has made these movies so popular because he was exceptional as Captain Jack Sparrow. The first 3 are the best and the rest should be seen at least once. 😂
Its not surprising that she knew the code. They set it up in the very first scene. Pirates fascinated her since childhood, ofc she would know anything there is to know, at least from what is to be found in literature. The code very likely to be one to have been documented.
Depp absolutely did create this character, and embodies him perfectly. But he has said, and it's obvious when you hear it, that he based him on Keith Richards.
Fun Fact: Johnny Depp based his character Jack Sparrow as one of his favorite musician Keith Richards. If you'll notice his clothes in the movies! He just played a drunk Keith 😆
James Norrington in my opinion had one of the best character development in the entire story, what's great about this story was a lot of the side characters had great story arcs.
you mean character arcs, as story arcs would be, say, for this movie, from the blacksmith swordfight, to Jack saving Elizabeth from drowning, to her boarding the Black Pearl, and so on
it doesn't matter how often I rewatch these movies - and it's fun every single time - it always baffles my mind that Keira Knightley was only 17 while many of those scenes were shot. Yes, she looks young, but not that young. I always presumed even back then that she was like in her mid to early 20s. At the same time her more recent movies give me the same effect because I can never believe she's in her 30s now. She has such an ageless face.
Fun fact: Kiera Knightly was 17 while filming this movie (18 when it was released) and Orlando Bloom was 25. Jack Davenport (Norrington) was 29 and Depp was 39. It seems like weird trivia but as the movies progress, the age gaps seems even weirder...for current standards, not the 1700s.
There are so many Easter Eggs to the Disney Ride. One being the Dog holding the keys which is a famous moment on the ride. As for the characters, only some background characters could be found on the ride. But since 2006, Captain Jack and Barbossa have been added to the ride. The Johnny Depp one is quite realistic.
This is his best role, in my opinion. Just like Robert Downey Jr made Marvel what it is, Johnny Depp made these movies what they are. It's a shame that they left him out because of what happened. To some extent, i get it, since it was a serious topic, but never the less, it was sad because you can tell this character means a lot to him and he has done amazing work in hospitals, with fans, etc.
Great thumbnail here! This is my Dad's favourite film out the franchise, i liled it alot too, such a iconic movie, I'm sure Oak has seen the "why has the rum gone?" Meme video hehe! Loved your reactions & reviews! Great stuff guys!
Commodore Norrington was definitely a pleasant character surprise. I expected ALOT of stereotypical character tropes but they truly surprised me with the character. Just one of many welcome surprises… such as Jack Sparrow’s sea leg walk. And to think Disney employees considered JD insane and over the hill for doing it… well the fan base LOVES IT!!!
Apparently Michael Eisner was pissed and said that Johnny was "ruining the movie". Eisner always has been and probably always will be a complete clown.
20:21 The underwater upside-down boat thing works on the condition that there is a weight attached to the top of the hull. It wouldn't work like in the movie. The boat with the air would float on the water due to buoyancy. If the air under the water somehow got to it, the boat would rise with them. So in order for it to stay that way, the downforce must be greater than the lift due to the weight.
Personally Commodore Norrington has always been my favourite and most underrated character in this series. He's the one who goes through most character development and I believe he doesn't really get the proper appreciation he deserves from the fandom.
These are BRILLIANT movies. The first one especially is just perfect. I really enjoyed 2 and 3. It was just that trilogy for a while, I've only seen 4 one time and haven't yet watched five but even at their worst they're very fun! Johnny Depp is ridiculously brilliant as Jack.
I like the 5th, they close some plot lines left open after the third, the fourth is not worth my attention, besides Penelope Cruz, she's great as usual, Johnny Depp and her have amazing chemistry, but I really enjoyed the 5th, it's worth a watch, I don't understand why it gets so much hate, every actor did an amazing job, I love coming full circle for Elizabeth and Will, it just makes sense to me
Elizabeth knew of Parlay because real life notorious pirates Captain Morgan and Captain Bartholomew Slate (and a few more) had written books of their pirate adventures after they were acquitted in trial. The English were fascinated by pirates adventures and culture and these books became best sellers. Not surprised that Elizabeth, with her fascination with pirates, would read these.
One really cool think to note is that everyone assumes that Jack tripped and fell off at the end because he was a fool or not knowing where he was, but if you listen at the beginning, they were talking about the rocks down there and how it's nearly impossible to survive that fall. He sees that when Elizabeth faints and just falls, she finds the sweet spot and survives, so he knows that if he jumps or tries for somewhere, he's bound to get hurt, so he ends up purposely tripping and falling so as to mimic her fall and "land" the fall safely into the water. Just like in many time throughout the movie, and indeed even the series, so many people write Jack off as a fool or drunk, when he is actually one step ahead most of the time.
I love how the only one in this film that actually follows the “stereotypical PG” rules of piracy is Barbossa ( “pirate” accent, captain of a cursed ship, the only main character obsessed with gold, even saying “argh” at certain points) and yet he’s easily the most ruthless part of the movie, delivering two straight-up _murder_ blows without the camera cutting away (it helped that they were undead, but still).
Geoffrey Rush approached these movies with the attitude of "if it's a pirate they want, it's a pirate they'll get," and it worked spectacularly. He was having a whale of a time the whole way through.
One of the last great adventure films ever made. I was really lucky to grow up with movies like Pirates and LotR - you can tell that everyone involved with the films loved and appreciated the craft of filmmaking (especially in with the practical sets/effects/etc)
I first saw this movie as kid and I fell in love with it Johnny Depp is pitch perfect casting The villain was amazing Excited for the rest of this series Gets better from here!
That part with Will imitating Jack was Orlando's genuine impression of Jack in the moment, so it was sort of unscripted. There are a few moments like that in the series. I shall point them out 😁
This movie had 2 premiers. One in London and one at Disneyland. The director describes very different audiences. When the prisoners were trying to lure the dog with the key, it was any other moment. But at Disneyland people lost their minds. On opening weekend, you could tell who knew the ride and who didn’t by their reaction to that moment.
So glad you guys are reacting to this! Johnny Depp is amazing, I watched the videos of him going to the hospital to cheer up the kids 🥹 such a great guy Not sure if you seen the one where he’s on the actual ride at Disneyland. Gets in his pirate gear and as they’re passing by on the boat he looks like an animatronic but then starts talking to the riders. Pirates of the Caribbean is nothing without him 🏴☠️
Love the new boards for the ratings and the loyalty to potter with the little deathly hallows symbol in the Oak’s one. Normally I mainly just stick to watching Potter related reactions but you guys got me hooked into your dynamic too. Love the positivity, insight and friendship
Robert Downey Jr also did a lot for kids with his Iron Man character. Not only visiting kids in the hospital but investing in prosthetics for kids without hands or arms. I love how much Downey Jr redeemed himself in life - ❤️
15:34 Fun fact: the Russian translation had the pirate say "took you long enough!" instead, which I wish the original said as well. 22:25 This wooden part of the ship is called a boom, for the sound it makes when it connects with your head. Just kidding. But it's a good way to remember its name. In the same vein, this sail is called a spanker. Also, something that pisses me off about the otherwise impeccable script is - why do the pirates freak out at the idea of the medallion dropping in the ocean? They can walk there and pick it up!
Jack Sparrow was loosely based on the historical pirate Calico Jack but I believe for mannerisms Depp took a lot of inspiration from Keith Richards. This was a fun movie, and far better than it had any right to be. Just the blacksmith fight was more than I expected when I first saw it. A true pirate high adventure up there with Sea Hawk and Captain Blood.
This film was a fucking revelation upon release. I don't think ANYONE expected the fame it would achieve! It was a magically wondrous experience across the board. Stoked y'all are digging in! Should be fun!
I had fully intended on sleeping through this movie. I was at an overnight triple showing and had to work early the next morning. I watched the first 2 films (Finding Nemo & Freaky Friday) and figured there was no way a movie based on a Disney ride was going to be any good so planned to catch some zzz's in my seat before work. But then Jack Sparrow was standing so proudly on his mast in this epic shot that panned out to show it was sinking into the bay as he docked and I realized that no, this movie was not going to suck and that I wouldn't be getting any sleep before my shift. That was a difficult day at work, but it was totally worth it.
Great reaction and talk at the end as always. As others have said the first three films are a contained trilogy then it's best to think of the next two as stand alone Jack Sparrow adventures. So yes there are 5 films but it's technically 3 stories set around pirates
Johnny Depp's daughter spent time in hospital, so he really understands what the kids and the parents are going through. That's why he spent so much time as Captain Jack at children's hospitals
Fun fact: This was the franchise that started the whole post-credit thing ^^ Been loving your reactions and I am definitely down for the ride on this one too!
There were a slew of films dating back to the sixties that did it before either of those. The Muppet Movie, Masters of the Universe, Lethal Weapon 3, and Airplane! being some of the more famous ones from the 70’s and 80’s.
Absolutely loved these movies, watched them over and over again. I could speak word for word back in the days. Captain Jack is one of my alltime favorite characters even named my second son Jack. Favorite line: "but why is rum gone"
Norrington is the premier example (most of the time) of discretion, temperance, and discipline. Though he was still guided and motivated by our most-human emotions. Fabulous, as always, gentlemen.
Seeing this pop up made me soooo happy! I cant wait for this ride. Man I wanna join you guys. Keep up the awesome reactions! If you think about it, Elizabeth knowing the code makes a lot of sense. When she recognizes Will as a pirate her interests are piqued in that moment so her studying pirate lore etc at a young age fits her character especially as she continues to develop throughout the trilogy.
In the later movies one factoid about POTC is that Keira Knightley did so well in her sword training that the stunt people said she was one of the best they've trained!
I liked how will really has disdain for pirates in the beginning and doesn’t want to accept that his dad was a pirate even when Jack tells him that bootstrap was a good man. And the call back of that at the end when will saves Jack because even though he’s a pirate, he’s a good man.
Tiny fact: 17:06 the pirate who yells “say goodbye!” to Will just before getting hit with the sign is the same actor who played Kano in the original Mortal Kombat film (RIP Trevor Goddard)
You asked about the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride and if it ties into the movie - it ties in in a number of ways. Near the beginning when the pirates are in jail trying to get the dog with the key to come -- that is from the ride. Also the scene where they first get to Tortuga, with the brothel and the drunks.
ohhh that's another epic that has a special place in my heart. It feels like pure nostalgia!! I was a teen in earlies 2000's and having pirates of the Caribbean, star wars, harry potter, lord of the rings... omg it was the golden era of the movies love these epics so much, when I watch them I go straight to the past. You guys are gonna LOVE the next ones, especially the second and third ones that are the canon trilogy are GOLD, and my favourite ones!!!! PS Johnny Depp is a genius actor! He made me happy in my entire teens years with Jack Sparrow, it was the most exciting thing to get a new movie and laugh hard with the entire family, repeating his sayings, me and my brother used to use SAVY? with each other all the time, such warm good memories.
This movie was a big part of my early childhood. I watched it over and over and over when I was with my dad at his office. I love this movie so much and I’m so glad you’re reacting to it!
I love this series so much; the music, the humor, the story details they built on AFTER they realized they would need sequels! And Capt Jack Sparrow, "the greatest pirate you've ever seen".
This is my favorite movie in the franchise. It exactly replicates the original Disney ride: The pirate attack on the town, the prisoners in the jail whistling for the dog with the key, the lady being thrown into the air from the hold, the skeletal pirates and the dock life in Barbados. After this movie came out they added Johny Depp into several of the scenes on the ride which I didn’t feel was necessary - but having been on the ride more than once - watching this film for the first time was a joy.
The scene at the prison with the pirates locked in the cell and a mangy dog holding the cell key in it's mouth is a multiple decades old and very classic scene in The Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disney World. 🏴☠️
@@The-Azure-Knight what are you imagining I mean by that? You're literally the one making it something gross... that's YOUR brain, so maybe focus some time and energy on that. Have a nice day, hope you heal whatever's ailing you inside ❤
In the audio commentary Knightley said she made the mistake of actually eating the food during 24:43 instead of spitting it out between takes like most actors would and she got more than a little sick because the stage they were on was moving to mimic a ship in water~
"Silverware" Grapeshot. They load the cannons with whatever they can stuff down the barrel, and blast it with the intention of shredding the crew. Cannonballs for the hull, chain shot for the mast and sails, grapeshot for the crew. Different shot for different goals. Ship too fast> Chain shot. Too many crew? Grapeshot. Just want it sunk? Cannon shot.
You guys are gonna love these! I love watching your reactions! Fun Facts: Kiera Knightly was 18. Jack Sparrow’s infamous walk was Johnny’s idea that he was on the sea so much that he didn’t have land legs! LOTR used the technology of the skeletons to make their army of the dead in Return of the King!
There's a reason for the "worst pirate" sentence. Johnny became a pirate because he freed a whole lot of slaves, witch wasn't standard even for pirates at that time. Wasn't because he robbed ships, took hostages or anything. It was just because he was a good person. He even says something like "people aren't cargo, mate".
What you shared at the end is so cool Oak!! I’m kind of in the same ballpark. I write with my right hand, throw left, bowl left, play racquetball right, bat right, catch left. I’m all over the place 😂 Kick ass review as always! I’m excited to see your guys’ reaction to the rest of the movies.
The ride actually got updated to have the movie characters in the attraction at Disney World, and currently, there’s lots of people who love Disney that are saddened by how the animatronics of Jack haven’t been maintained in the past 15+ years.
The first one just is the best. I love the Skeletons and the set pieces that looked fantastic for 2003. For the most part there all great but this one is just perfect! Johhny Deppss performance was outstanding as well as he rest of the casts, although Keira Knightley being only 17 yrs old was a little weird considering shes the eye candy to two grown actors!
In the Disney ride is the prisoners trying to get the keys from the dog, the drunk sleeping with the pigs, the general mood of Tortuga, the treasure cave, the pirate marooned on an island, the monkey... the ride is generally a mood and world builder, so the writers just put a story into the world of the ride. Since the success of the films, the characters of the films, are now in the ride.
I’m 29 I watched this when I was 10. Any violence I saw I think I just correlated it with fantasy. Being an adult now it’s all more realistic. I played it over and over and on the DVD, the behind the scenes and commentary I was captivated. FUN FACT: actors had darker/tinted contacts in while shooting any sunny days so their eyes could be open and not Squinting so hard. You can see how black their eyes are in some scenes.
The Lady Washington is the ship used as the Black Pearl. It has docked near us dozens of times in Olympia and other ports nearby. I have a friend that is a diesel mechanic/instructor and SHE helps keep it running and is part of the crew sometimes. She's a lovely ship. Saw her last summer at the pier just two blocks from our apartment. You can tour her and sometimes go on short day trips on her. A great family day trip.
She wasn't the Black Pearl, she was the HMS Interceptor. I was professional crew on her for five months. Lived and worked on board the whole time. Exhausting work that never ends, but awesome job.
I love this movie and this series. Imo the first 3 are the best, I don’t care for the last 2, but that’s just me. Elizabeth and Will are such a great couple. They’ve known each other their entire lives and he’s always been in good standing with her father. She has always done what she could to protect Will (taking the medallion when he’s found), Will went to the end of the world to save Elizabeth, and her father is aware that Will did what he had to to bring his daughter home safe. So of course he approves. Captain Jack Sparrow is fantastic and I implore you to look into his lore and understand his depth, but do so after you watch all the movies. Because the hindsight will give you so much depth to his character. Jack and Elizabeth have great chemistry. They’re the friends with the love/hate relationship. They both have the same goals but getting to the goals is where they disagree, but they never let it get in the way of the end goal. Will and Jack is such an interesting relationship in the story, the leverage usage in their relationship is intriguing. The trio of Jack, Will and Elizabeth is *chefs kiss* Norrington imo is *underrated*. He’s someone who has known Elizabeth for years because of her standing in society and who her dad is and his job and whatnot. He’s watched Elizabeth grow up and become her own person with her own voice, while also being aware of the times and era that he’s in. Even when Elizabeth chooses Will in the end, Norrington doesn’t fight her on it. He gives up his standing as fiancé and let’s her live the life she wants. It’s a breathe of fresh air in period ish movies like this. Any other movie, dude would’ve thrown a fit. He was aware that he didn’t own her and she was not his property. I love his character for that simple fact.
I remember watching this film when i was very young with my family. And just with the entrance of Jack sparrow, we all knew his character was gonna be so good!
Omg at 38:40-38:50, the concern and then realization/relief you guys go through is Adorable and exactly how I reacted the first time. Also, enjoyed the shout out for Forged In Fire, my husband and I love that show.
Keira Knightley was only 17 when she filmed this movie. The first post-credit scene in a movie dates back to 1986's "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," but the first one I heard about was in 2001's "Shrek 2." I was 18 when this came out and I saw it three times in the theater; it's still one of my favorite movies. I didn't know about the post-credit scene until the second or third time I saw it, but the rest of the movies have post-credits scenes as well.
I can’t believe you guys haven’t had the chance to watch it till now BUT I’m also kinda super glad because now I can be part of the experience with you

The underwater boat trick where they hold the boat upside down to breath as they walk along the ocean floor is actually possible. But the boat needs to be heavy enough that it doesn’t float to the surface.
Couple of manly films you chaps would like , Phonebooth , Transporter , Crank.
I just can't believe you haven't watch this, but more content for us to watch, so no complaining.
This movie is pure perfection
I was 10 and I was afraid of the skeleton pirates and when they were killing the people at the end
Now I think it's a badass awesome movie 😂
See, this is why I love Norrington. He's expected to be the stereotypical "evil British officer" that happens in almost every period film that has anything to do with Britain, but he's actually a decent guy. He genuinely cared about Elizabeth as a person, and not as a prize. So, as long as she's happy and taken care of, he knows when he's beaten.
The last of the mohicans is also a good example of this too
His character only gets better in the next two films too
Agree, it's very sad to see his death.
@Dank Waifu You got a point. What a messed up time that was. At least it wasnt 100% accurate
Johnny Depp is nothing short of perfection in these films! He IS Captain Jack. Nobody else could have done it better
He was really great in this
Johnny in this role reminds me of Harrison Ford as Han solo, nobody can match the acting skill of these two.
agreed. I also would say Gibbs was casted perfectly.
Nobody else can ever play Captain Hack Sparrow except JD. 🙂❤️
A young Robin Williams?
Norrington’s comment at the end was insinuating two things.
-He knows that Will made the sword and did it well. With great care and devotion.
-Just like how much care and devotion he put into the sword he wants Will to put it “every aspect of his life.” Meaning his relationship with Elizabeth.
In other words.. “Please take care of her and cherish her.”
🤘🤘🤘🤘
Norrington's a good guy 😢
@@artsysabs Yeah, he is. I thought he was a douche when I were smaller. But I did not know english at all back then, nor did I understand the induendos OR meaning behind big words and sentences. So to me he locked like a tardfish.
In other words "Ill expect you treat her well".
Norrington a most humble man 😭
"This is the coolest bad guy ever!" YES, Norrington is a GREAT secondary antagonist because he has a lot of traits we don't normally see in a villain. He is reasonable, loyal, level-headed, smart, and even empathetic. He has ambition but isn't prideful or vain. He has integrity and cannot be bribed with money or power. A very interesting guy who doesn't get enough credit because of how amazing Barbossa is as the "tragic villain."
He's not even a badguy... he is the 'main cast's' opponent.
He's what we call the rival.
He's an antagonist not a villain.
if it hasn't been mentioned yet, jack sparrow stumbles around when he walks on flat land because he has sea legs as a result of always being on ships which is why when he's on ships he walks normally; an ingenious detail thought up by johnny:]
I thought it was because he was drunk
@@relent-lass7510 that too 😂
There's a theory that it's because his brain has been boiled from him being dehydrated for so long. You can notice it getting worse with each movie. Look up "Film Theory Jack is Dying" it's a pretty interesting video
Oh wow! Yeah, you're right! I've never thought about that before!
He was perfectly cast
Actually, Depp got an earlier Oscar Nomination for “Ed Wood”. But I was sure hoping he would win!!!
That's genius writing right there.
Correct
Ah, that should explain it. Cause I have used a bucket over my head in a pool and that worked.
An interesting thing I read once was someone saying most people think Jack walks funny because he’s always drunk - when in fact, he walks perfectly fine while on ships. But on land, he has sea legs. Because he lives on ships.
From everything I've seen so far in the comments, looks like Johnny had a great grasp on this character.
They also since these movies came out, remade at least two of the characters to look like Johnny Depp/Jack Sparrow
This, kids went from being interested in dinosaurs to pirates...if I'm getting the timeline right. haha
I definitely forgot about the pig scene. But Johnny Depp also sings part of the song from the ride in the movies.
Worked out great!
@@BaddMedicine he also based the characters movements off of Keith Richards, which comes back later on.
I like that, I like looking at the 4th and 5th movies as kinda...side questy that just adds to the lore. Nothing will beat the first 3!
@@ryomirelandil917 definitely.
I'm not sure I'd consider them a trilogy, it's more like the first film is standalone while the second two are a duology.
So fun!
"I'm curious, after killing me what is it you planned on doing next?" Has got to be one of the most underrated lines in this franchise.
at the same time taking out the knife out if his chest, BAD ASS
🤣 the 3 of you cheering "yeah" when Jack appears 😍
I remember going to the cinema to watch this for Orlando Bloom, leaving the cinema absolutely fascinated by Barbossa.
Which works out well...lol
Who later went on to star in Pirates as Captain Jack Sparrows father
Followed soon after by Sir Paul McCartney playing Jack's uncle.
Fun Fact: Johnny Depp based his character Jack Sparrow as one of his favorite musician Keith Richards. If you'll notice his clothes in the movies! He just played a drunk Keith 😆
foreshadowing haha
James Norrington in my opinion had one of the best character development in the entire story, what's great about this story was a lot of the side characters had great story arcs.
you mean character arcs, as story arcs would be, say, for this movie, from the blacksmith swordfight, to Jack saving Elizabeth from drowning, to her boarding the Black Pearl, and so on
I felt like he was wasted in the end though.
Jack's first scene is the perfect definition of his character.
it doesn't matter how often I rewatch these movies - and it's fun every single time - it always baffles my mind that Keira Knightley was only 17 while many of those scenes were shot. Yes, she looks young, but not that young. I always presumed even back then that she was like in her mid to early 20s. At the same time her more recent movies give me the same effect because I can never believe she's in her 30s now. She has such an ageless face.
You’ve been reacting to my favourite movies recently! I thought it couldn’t get any better but here we are! I’m so excited!!
Let's goooooo, Malia!
The older I get, the more I appreciate the humor he’s put into the characters he has created in film.
Actually alright. Very alright
Basically the Tortuga screen is the ride. Which is why it looked so ridiculous
Johnny Depp's performance is so iconic. He was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for this role.
I'm in a similar boat.....geez no pun intended, but I think it's safe to stick to the 3 because the characters, story and acting just..nosedive
I like the 5th, they close some plot lines left open after the third, the fourth is not worth my attention, besides Penelope Cruz, she's great as usual, Johnny Depp and her have amazing chemistry, but I really enjoyed the 5th, it's worth a watch, I don't understand why it gets so much hate, every actor did an amazing job, I love coming full circle for Elizabeth and Will, it just makes sense to me
#1 is brilliant. Its just a good fun movie, where the same can't be said for the sequels, nor almost any other movie made in the last 20-25 years.
Will Turner isn't upset at Elizabeth when he learns that it's his blood they need. He's upset at the fact that his father was a pirate after all.
I first saw this movie as kid and I fell in love with it
Johnny Depp is pitch perfect casting
The villain was amazing
Excited for the rest of this series
Gets better from here!
Naaah this was the best one. Could watch on repeat all day
Oh man, are y’all for real?! I’m SO excited for you to see this series!!! 😂 The first three will always have my heart. Black Pearl is a masterpiece!
Looking forward to all of these
That part with Will imitating Jack was Orlando's genuine impression of Jack in the moment, so it was sort of unscripted.
I can’t wait to see you guys get to the pirate sequels cause honestly it’s a good franchise and I love the reactions
So glad you guys are reacting to this! Johnny Depp is amazing, I watched the videos of him going to the hospital to cheer up the kids 🥹 such a great guy
Not sure if you seen the one where he’s on the actual ride at Disneyland.
I love how much Downey Jr redeemed himself in life - ❤️
31:27 ironically, since Elizabeth stole the final piece from William, it is possible that her additional blood may have been needed, anyway.
love the fact that you guys did this Movie reaction after watching the Fantastic Beast Series!!! can't wait for upcoming reactions :)
Thank you and thanks for watching. 😁🤙
I feel like when jack keeps appearing on the treasure island Barbossa is thinking
"does he just respawn here??"
This is where you boys will learn just how good at improv and freestyling Johnny is
15:34 Fun fact: the Russian translation had the pirate say "took you long enough!" instead, which I wish the original said as well.
11:40 you guys completely missed how Jack used the foot work part to trick William into moving out of his way so he could reach the door.
Another cracking series to react to! I feel like Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa) is underrated in these movies, he is a genius
Fun fact:
This was the franchise that started the whole post-credit thing ^^ Been loving your reactions and I am definitely down for the ride on this one too!
Actually The Fast and the Furious did it first (2001)
@@Sthuthukile No kidding? Even I don't know what I am talking about then it seems :)
I love that line "Ye best be believin in ghost stories, Miss Turner. You're in one!"
I went from girl to woman when I saw Captain Jack Sparrow the first time 🤣 This movie will always have a special place in my heart
🤣
Ew.
@@The-Azure-Knight what are you imagining I mean by that? You're literally the one making it something gross... that's YOUR brain, so maybe focus some time and energy on that. Have a nice day, hope you heal whatever's ailing you inside ❤
@@angelalurtz3638 Thank you for your kind words. I will strive to improve my thought process. Good day 👸
Hahaha 😆 you know
So excited to see this series of reactions!!! I love all the "Pirate" movies. A lot of terrific one liner's in each movie.
In the audio commentary Knightley said she made the mistake of actually eating the food during 24:43 instead of spitting it out between takes like most actors would and she got more than a little sick because the stage they were on was moving to mimic a ship in water~
These movies were my childhood. Johnny Depp is a legend. At Worlds End is my favorite. Enjoy the series guys!!!
Fun Facts:
Kiera Knightly was 18.
Jack Sparrow’s infamous walk was Johnny’s idea that he was on the sea so much that he didn’t have land legs!
LOTR used the technology of the skeletons to make their army of the dead in Return of the King!
except LOTR came out before these......Two Towers in which the undead army was used came out the year BEFORE this.....
@@Shifty51991 I know, but they were still working on the sfx around the same time.
I wish I were a kid seeing this in the theatre for the first time again. This was such a great era for movies.
I remember these movies being so fun to watch! Hope you guys enjoy XD
I’m all over the place 😂
Kick ass review as always! I’m excited to see your guys’ reaction to the rest of the movies.
🤜🤛😁
The ride actually got updated to have the movie characters in the attraction at Disney World, and currently, there’s lots of people who love Disney that are saddened by how the animatronics of Jack haven’t been maintained in the past 15+ years.
The first one just is the best. I love the Skeletons and the set pieces that looked fantastic for 2003. For the most part there all great but this one is just perfect! Johhny Deppss performance was outstanding as well as he rest of the casts, although Keira Knightley being only 17 yrs old was a little weird considering shes the eye candy to two grown actors!
Eesh. I didn't know that. I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with that.
The trio of Jack, Will and Elizabeth is *chefs kiss*
Norrington imo is *underrated*.
