The reason why jack is worth 100 souls: (Short Story Spoilers)
Jack went against the east india trading company when he worked for them and instead of transporting, he saved 100 slaves from their cargo ship which got him branded as a pirate and got his ship burnt and sunk. He went to Davy Jones to get it back and in return Davy Jones having a cruel sense of irony requested he enslave 100 souls in return. He named the ship the Black Pearl because of the charred blackness that remained on the ship when it was resurrected.

As a trilogy, I find this series parallels the Back to the Future franchise. In both the first is great and a perfect stand-alone film. Massive success with the first film(s) opened an opportunity to create a 'franchise'. The second is NOT a stand alone film and in effect sets up the 3rd film. All 3 together create a great viewing experience. Even the Matrix trilogy followed this pattern/strategy.

Commodore Norrington is the most underrated and complex character that doesn't get talked about much in this series. I believe he goes through the most character development in this series and does honestly end up being the most honourable person in this series, someone who actually manages to look past his own selfish needs, which the other bunch of characters both leading and supporting fail to do over and over again in this series.

Johhny Deep HATED that he had to romantically kiss Knightly's character. He's spoken about this in a few interviews. It's because in the first Pirates, she was only 17 years old, and Johnny felt a fatherly way toward her. The fact in the second Pirates he had to passionately kiss her, although Knightly was now 20, made him feel especially uncomfortable and awkward. He asked to have that scene eliminated form the script but didn't win the battle.

This one is definitely my favorite of the series. It mainly comes down to two scenes for me. The bit with Elizabeth and Jack both saying "One day you won't be able to resist; you're going to want it" to each other (Jack won't be able to resist doing the right thing, and Elizabeth won't be able to resist doing the pirate thing), then the payoff at the end when Jack comes back to the ship and Elizabeth tricks him and chains him to the ship.
It's the character evolutions and consequences in this that I love, and that extends to Norrington who was fine in the first, but I didn't see much depth to him. The third POTC movie is now and will always be my fave, though it's in CLOSE competition with the first one. At World's End is dense and complex (which I love in a story) and it expertly shows off all of the main characters without neglecting any of them. It's a wonderful, epic conclusion that ties all 3 movies together even though the first movie was written as a standalone flick. Now, all that said, I saw Dead Man's Chest in the theaters, and the CGI on Davy Jones's costume was SO GOOD that, as a costumer, I was CONVINCED Bill Nighy was actually wearing that hat and coat and I was marveling at the details the costume department had put on it. 😄 All these years later, the CGI still holds up.
But my FAVORITE part about this movie has come to be Naomie Harris's portrayal of Tia Dalma. Just the *way* she speaks makes me smile. The inflection and tone she gives to certain words, the way she draws some of them out, and her back and forth method of speaking strong and decisively, then soft and slow and sweet. I wish I sounded that good, lol! My favorite line is when she tells Jack, "If you don't want it, give it back...Then it helps."
Btw guys, go back and watch the Tia Dalma introduction scene again without the distraction of having to watch it. There are several times when Jack is poking around in Tia's stuff that the camera lingers on certain objects--objects you saw in other places in this film on other characters. Also, notices that as soon as she lets Jack the Monkey out of the cage, he runs to the other room, and jumps up onto a bed/table where you can see a pair of legs and boots. They are Barbossa's boots. 🙂

Hey guys. My favorite one is definitely the 3rd (At the world's end).
I love it because it's way more Epic than the previous ones. It expands the Universe and the Mythology of Pitares of Caribbean so much. It has epic battle scenes, emotional moments, it is really really intense. I can still remember how I felt seeing it in the thatres when I was 12. The only movie that ever reached the same level of Epic was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2.

To me Jack more so represented becoming a Pirate more than a love interest to Elizabeth. He told her that she would come on his side eventually. She was always fascinated by pirates and being free of the confined life she lived. At the end when she kisses Jack that was the moment she became a pirate, which is what he called her. That was the ultimate act of piracy, betrayal your own self interest. She did the thing that Jack was trying to do the entire movie, sacrifice others for himself. At the end though he couldn't do it and went back and saved them. They both became what they said each other would. Jack became a good man, and Elizabeth became a pirate.

This is in my opinion, the best written and epic installment of the series. While the first one had a perfect Story, this one for me had the whole package of better visuals, better character development, some really spooky and gruesome scenes and also the best scene in the entire franchise for me: Davy Jones playing his organ in a full blown storm and Bill turner forced to torture his own son while Jones smiled on maliciously. My own father had shivers going down his spine when he watched this scene happen first time.

So to drop a little lore. But no spoilers. Jack sailed as a sailor under the King's Navy when younger. He sailed on The Wicked Wench which served under the East India Trading Company selling cargo and slaves. Jack was to help the slave market and deliver slaves, but could not do it and freed them instead. Cutler Beckett branded Jack as a Pirate and burned/sunk the Wicked Wench to the depths. Jack loved that ship, so he called to Davy Jones to make a deal. After 13 years of serving as captain, Jack would join Jones's crew. Jones agreed and raised the ship. But the ship was charred and blackened and Jack renamed it to The Black Pearl.
There are many theories that stem from this. The reason why Norrington didn't want to arrest Jack - he heard of Jack and what he did before being branded a pirate. Ergo he knew Jack was good at heart.
Another theory is that the people that are crowding around tia Dalmas are in fact the slaves that Jack saved. Oh and the theory goes that Jack saved 100 souls. That's why Jones asks for 100 souls to pay his debt. Jack freed 100. Now he had to sentence 100 to judgment.
Lastly, though I could go for days on lore. The theory is the monkey stole the gold coin so that Barbossa could be risen. You actually see in the scene when we first meet Tia Dalma that the monkey goes to the back and there are a pair of boots that are lying in the bed. Supposedly Barbossa.
The theories are fan made. But the story of Jack and the freed slaves come from the book series. And PoTC wikipedia.

Something I read about Cutler Beckett's & Captain Jack Sparrow's history; Beckett told Jack to sail with "an important cargo", but Sparrow found out the cargo is 100 slaves. He turned to Beckett & said "people are not cargo, mate" and rescued them from Beckett. Because Beckett had connections at that time, he announced Jack as a pirate, so Jack was forced into the pirate life. That's why in the movie, when Jack asked Davy Jones "how many souls my soul worths?", Jones said "100 souls".
Some say he took the slaves to Tortuga, that's why everyone there were putting out candles at the end of the movie

Watching these films its easy to forget that Elizabeth was only like 22 at the start and seeing as POTC 1 & 2 pick up after each other she's still 22 goin on 23, makes sense that her feelings arent sorta completely out even though she's set to marry Will.
We've established that she's sorta obsessed and intrigued by this pirate life hence her initial attraction to Will and her slight attraction to Jack as not only is he a good man & pirate but he's a touch older & a bit more dangerous. This continues into pt 3 (I wont spoil).
I love the trilogy cause it expands on the 3 stars characters & their development & brings them full circle. One of the best trilogies ever.
