I see why Mozart admired him.

Haydn is really the father of the symphony. The elegance and harmony of their compositions are amazing. Viva Haydn and his incredible and incomparable music. The symphonies are true musical masterpieces that provides us moments of unforgettable pleasure. The interpretation and direction of orchestra are superb.Bravissimo.

LDC

this picture is a case of 18th [landscaping] art imitating nature...even the river may have been diverted...to obtain "classical" nature

Does anyone know the history behind the nickname "In nomine Domini" ? Wikipedia doesn't say. Thanks.

It’s not a nickname; Haydn almost always topped and tailed his manuscripts with religious sentiments in Latin, and *In nomine Domini* is found at the top of many scores.
*Laus Deo* was probably the most common of these little tags appended at the end.
In nomine Domini as a nickname attached only very occasionally to Symphony 84 - like in almost every case in Haydn - has no authority, is entirely spurious, is meaningless, and I really wouldn’t worry about it.

I would be interested to know why you think this as to my ears Symphony 84 is a quintessentially Haydnesque work.

Now officially known as the "Watch" Symphony.

Haydn truly was the master of the symphony. Of course, Mozart's symphonies are splendid (especially his earlier ones) but Haydn's supernatural output of the symphonic form is outstanding, along with his long list of string quartets and other chamber music.
