    One more magnificent symphony. This masterpiece touches us deeply in our soul not only for the lyricism but for the sensitivity, I think nobody can be indifferent to this marvelous music. The direction and the orchestra performance are exceptional. Viva Haydn and his amazing talent and musicality. Bravo for this glorious recording.

      Ha Yes! There's so much mischief in Haydn -but this IS a superb masterpiece of construction -my favourite Haydn symphony -and didn't Beethoven nick the opening theme of the 2nd movement for the finale of his 6th? Okay he switched it around a bit, but....

      The interpretation by The Orchestra of the 18th Century, conducted by Frans Brüggen. They play on original or copies of original instruments. Timebased instruments, one could say. The orchestra has the habit of doing a lot of research in history of music. Hence Orchestra of 18th century.

      Actually, they are about a semitone LOWER than TODAY'S STANDARD.
      Your expectation, that there was a standard pitch in Haydn's time, and it was identical with today's standard is wrong.
      In Haydn's time there was no uniform standard. In Haydn's time almost surely this symphony was NEVER played at a'=440 Hz.

    Did they use some "funky" tuning for this cuz it sounds a little out of tune to me?

    • @willduan4869
      @willduan4869 3 года назад +1

      They are using baroque tuning, about A=415. It is about one half-step flat of the modern A=440 standard. A=415 was more or less the standard in Haydn's time.

    • @davidjames1684
      @davidjames1684 3 года назад

      @@willduan4869 It is "odd" that in a tuning system, you can pick any arbitrary tuning frequency and then simply adjust the other adjacent notes to be equidistant from each other (percentagewise such as 5.9% spaced in pitch), based on that reference point. For example, A4 can be 440 Hz but it can also be 415, 432, 444, or basically ANY reasonable frequency. Personally, I think music should be based on A as the start of the octave, not C. I don't see the logic in using C as the crossover points from 1 octave to the next. I would have started with A0 = close to 14 Hz and build from there, then the longest pipe on a pipe organ would be about 37 feet (about 11.2m) instead of about 32 feet (about 9.7m). It would be awesome to hear that low A rumble a church, perhaps stacked with an A1 = 27.5 Hz. However, being an exact multiple of the "bad" 7 Hz frequency which is supposed to be bad for our bodies, perhaps 14 Hz should be used sparingly like at the end of the mass, that way if people start dropping like flies, the people that survived can exit the church and make room for the emergency people to come in with body bags.

      @@willduan4869 The D natural that they play is not quite the same as a modern C#/Db so it is not a half step off. I am wondering if they are using A = 432 Hz tuning system.
