Understanding Tanya in Youjo Senki: • Video

My twitter thing: / thegoldbattler
I don't really use it much but it's there.
---
Saga of Tanya the Evil is owned by Carlo Zen, Enterbrain, Studio NUT, Yen Press, and Funimation.
The songs are from Trails of Cold Steel, by Falcom.
pls don't sue me I'm just a fan
I'm a tad late, but I'm also disappointed I didn't see this sooner.
Col. Ansen Sioux's daughter is named Mary.
Mary Sioux is a homonym for "Mary Sue", which is a character who has no experience and yet is more powerful or otherwise better than others with greater training and experience.
Mary Sioux is a Mary Sue. 11/10 naming skillz
In the novel (or maybe in the manga i think) they named her Mary Sue, not even a homonym, just named her directly like that
Mary Sioux (Mary Sue in the anime) is a Shonen protagonist type character when you think of it
No one likes Mary Sue...
i'm very late
I think making Mary as Tanya nemesis make it alot better than your typical mage or tactician, Mary Sue always written where the world favor around her, it's all fun and games until putting mary sue into a fictional world based on real history and all you have is a powerless, sad, impulsive and irrational woman that make karen look more well behave.
"Well its the new season and you know what that means... yup! time to ignore all of it and keep talking about Youjo Senki" Absolutely love that part XD
Tanya was most probably right about the gun being illegal since she studied law in this world.
ddy 73
While she may very well be correct there is a big difference between drafting a law/treaty and actually being able/willing to enforce said law/treaty.
Even if she was, the Germans were using poison gas and flame weapons. You don't get to complain when the other side uses a good weapon that hurts people when you're using good weapons that hurt people.
@@PhoenixT70 what the hell are you talking about ?
@@ddy7323 I’m saying that the Germans were hypocrites.
@@PhoenixT70 i'm talking about the laws in the series what the hell are you talking about the empire followed the international laws to the letter.
I agree that they put a lot of effort into the text, and font. The final blu-ray volume from Japan even had a message written in that extremely hard to read font, which decoded to "Der Frieden ist das höchste ideal der Menschheit", or in English as "Peace is the highest ideal of mankind". I find that a pretty interesting message to have put on the BD set.
Woah, that's super cool.
Its one of tanyas highest ideals.
Cool fact, Dakia is based off Dacia, which was a province in the Roman Empire with similar borders to modern day romania

....Σ('◉⌓◉’) 「Oh no.」
I totally get why you are obsessed with this series. I can't wait to get the continuation of it, the anime and the light novels both. Each version has its own issues, but they also complement each other very nicely in a way that I haven't really seen from any other series with their adaptations. The light novels have a monumental amount of thought put into them, but the presentation could be a lot better, which is exactly the point on which the anime excels. Eschewing the huge monologues in favor of instead presenting Tanya from another perspective was honestly a fantastic decision, because it not only avoids huge issues with pacing, but also brings something new to the story while still being rather faithful to the original.
Yeah, there's just something about the pace of the anime that makes it intensely watchable for me. I never get tired of it.
Tanya's hair draws obvious parallels with Araragi's charachteristic hair from the Monogatari series with it being very emotive and an indicator of the mood of the scene or the thought process of the character. I have no doubt that this design was at least an inspiration and I really like the subtle detail it adds.
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IS, WHY NO ONE TALKED ABOUT THAT?
The german flight unit also known as the boot or "Das Boot"
Oh...
oh...
How did I...
miss that...
shit
I mean I'm pretty sure das boot means The Boat, but "the boot" feels so on the nose that I'm inclined to believe that's it.
I don't know if it's an actual reference though, I just learn it from other people on a taiwanese noodle forum and I thought das boot was both funny and made sense. It'd be actually pretty great if it is. Great video again! you're really good on analyzing and explaining details. I hope we get S2!
Boot is boat - Underwasser-boot : U-boat
Das is definitely the wrong pronoun for that
15:12 "grammar is a bit off"
*Sound like me when I speak England*
I see what you did there.
5:38 it's also stated that in Youjo Senki; this factions jetpacks are the most advanced, and every other nation quickly tried to mimic them, this is why one faction is "brooms", horses, and skis respectively: their technology is lagging behind both in mobility and maneuverability, meanwhile the empire has the most advanced model as they had the most time with them, the empire's hover models represent the iron cross of germany.
4:48 So the Russi Federation is basically the USSR.
Yep, before it was Rus'/Russi Empire, is alternative universe and revolution happened in 1912 (by UC - unified calender (1905, Russia had revolution which called "First revolution" but communists did not rise that time) here they does)
Another one:
The Battleship that attacks the Fjords in Ep7 (after Tanya and her wing destroyed all of the guns) is a Bayern-Class Battleship, the last class of Battleships built for the Imperial German Navy in WW1. The interesting thing about that is that those ships participated in Operation "Albion", a amphibious attack on Russian Held islands in the baltic sea, which capture allowed the germans to attack the russian frontlines from behind, aswell as to cut of their supplies.
Tanya's "silver wings" badge is basically a blue max, the writing is "POUR LE MERITE" so there is a capital U for you.
There are also numbers in the alphabet, seen on the Mondragon rear sight distance scale, and some clocks. It looks vaguely like roman numerals but isn't. The artbook doesn't include the alphabet by the way.
Damn, good catch.
I realized this a bit too late to include in the video, but the episode # in the cards near the start of each episode also use those unique numbers.
I have some tumblr posts on the topic:
lightandwaterforthetrees.tumblr.com/post/167776261481/youjo-senki-alphabet

lightandwaterforthetrees.tumblr.com/post/167706356206/deciphering-youjo-senki
There's also the FAILURE stamp now that I think of it
Some addition and correction.
The Entente is more commonly called as Legadonia Entente Federation in LN for some reason.
France= Francois Republic
It's not Russi Federation, it's Rus Union but in anime Tanya just call them Union.
And the Italy is called Kingdom Of Iltoa (I have no idea why it's a kingdom though aha ha)
As for Empire is based on what, some says they're very close to Reich Empire... and on occasion the empire is called Reich in LN.
As for Dakia, the poor idiots did get help as somewhere it mentioned their military factory is sponsored by French. Not that it help them much, and the anime make it PAINFUL with displaying the factory making shells that could have give them some anti-air power. Yeah, a detail I spotted later on as I think *hey, those aren't thermos LOL* Why did they leave artillery shells in the factory when invading the empire?
Carlo Zen
Yeah, respect him for his thesis like novel that make me read one chapter for so long, I can finish ten chapter of other light novel. And also info dump that tells me to revise my history lesson, and here I thought I am done with world war history.
I need season 2 now!
i need it in my life
You need jesus.
There's a movie coming out
Me too
The trailer is out yo
U-Boot = Unterseeboot (Underseaboat). Uboot/ or short boot in military terminology.
Greetings from Germany and thanks for the vid
A+ and high five for the intro.
Oh wow, guess I have another set of fictional alphabets to learn! (the first one before this being Madoka Magica's Witch Runes 👌) I knew those writings seemed like they weren't random. Thanks for even going so far as figuring them out!
And lol yeah, the details on how Tanya gets a booster seat, her emotive ahoge hair and actually even the recognition that she was too short to point at the land, are just adorable.
You know I already liked your channel but the fact you love Youjo Senki as much as I do.
Yeah that and jesus
Turtel I bet u smell like sweaty cheese. Barely takes shower.
Wildgamer 912 wtf 😂😂😂😂 hahahahaa
The German Boots are related to an old Norse Myth where one of the Gods (Vidar, a son of Odin) was known to wear a single large iron shod boot made from the extra leather pieces that people have cut from their own shoes. The idea was that at some point, he would need to use the boot to hold down the lower jaw of a great wolf and rip the top of it's head off with his hands. I believe this was to avenge Odin when he was eaten by Fenrir.
"Just cute as hell"
- a perfect description of Tanya Degurechaff
Until she opens her mouth or acts... XD
Nice reference to Vlad III from fate/GO when you were talking about transylvania at 6:57
For anyone curious, the IMFDB is a pretty accurate resource for the weapons used in movies, tv shows, anime and video games.
I honestly don't think that Schugel is purely based on Wernher von Braun. Germany had a lot of mad scientists throughout the years, including Robert Oppenheimer (V2 and Manhattan Project), Robert Lusser (V1) and Walter Dornberger who I think is the main inspiration for Schugel.
Also your German pronunciation gets a 3/10. :p If you want some tips let me know. It's kind of irritating for me as a German, but most people don't notice or care so I don't know if it'd be worth the effort.
Fair point, Von Braun was my main point of comparison (I guess because of Gundam?) but looking more into it, you're probably right.
Also, I'm glad my German scored higher than a 1 at least. I took like 20 attempts at pronouncing it right and that was the best I could muster.
Very nice work! The alphabet part proves your dedication. I'd like to see which other anime you're a fan of, I mean it seems you can make a good video out of anything you like to talk about, so I'm not trying to push any idea, lol
I see I'm not the only one re-watching Youjo Senki an ungodly number of times because the current season is so disappointing. Keep up the good work :)
11:07 There are two versions of the Mondragon; a straight-pull bolt action (as opposed to a turning bolt action like the Lee-Enfield or Mauser 1898), and a gas-operated self-loading version. These were the models of 1884 and 1904, respectively. The 1904 model in 7.92X57mm Mauser was trialed by the German air corps, and is the one depicted here, and used as a personal defense weapon until sufficient numbers of lighter machine guns could be produced for them. The _Reichsmarine_ then took delivery of the rifles, and used them aboard several destroyers and as the service rifle of a battalion of Marine combat engineers for the remainder of the war. The Swiss also used it as a service rifle, rechambered to accept 7.5mm Swiss cartridges. Basically none are still around, making it extremely valuable and a collector's item.
>first video is 6 awesome things about Youjo Senki
>Second video is 12
*absolute madman*
next will be 24?
You, so great to watch another of your videos! I didn't notice most of those things, it is was so neat; amazing video!
you missed Switzerland, spain, and what even the ottomans are called in youjo senki, and with Scandinavia the Vaterland owns Denmark all the way up to skane. That union with Scandinavians would be Norway, Sweden and parts of finland(not sure just a hypothesis or maybe before Tanya showed up for war the vaterland ate Denmark.
"Including Transylvania"
Shows a picture of Vlad III
Fuckin neat af
Even in this world... SWITZERLAND DID NO SHITS
Switzerland ah Switzerland... all those war you missed... all those actions you did no shits even though you have tanks and army...
What
The
Fuck...
Great video, and I am really glad that you like the trail series. Steel III is coming.
My hype levels for CS3 are out of control.
Details like these are the main reason that Youjo Senki is one of my three favorite anime of all time.
I always loved those detail n now even more. Really incredible research😍😍
So when I read the First Volume of the LN, the badge that tanya receives after the Norden Border Skirmish is the Silver Wings Assault Badge. But most of the recipients of this badge were mostly dead infantry being recognized for their heroism akin to an Archangel's. Meaning that tanya is a very rare soldier in every way
This is one of my most favorite animes
Great video my dude! It was really informative. 10/10
Thanks my dude!
Supernerd... Omg love it! Good work sir the Fatherland is proud
16:47 ship in middle is is german super-dreadnought Bayern this ship was answer to British - Queen Elizabeth class super-dreadnought.
Ship had
8 15" (" is inch mark, 380 mm) naval guns, capable of firing 2 shots per minute and fired 875 kg shells.
16 6" (152 mm) secondary guns.
Armor consists of main belt with 14" (350 mm)
Propulsion
25 boilers
4 steam turbines
Speed - 24 knots.
Ships on the sides are German ww2 Z-class destroyers.
I bought the first two light novel volumes and they're great, now I feel like the anime missed so much about the actual thinking and motivation on the characters, a great anime for an even greater novel
In fact the sound barrier was broken by Germany in WW2 first with the Me 163 Komet.. (reffering to 13:54)
They claim they broke it, this is unverified by either side. Officially it was broken 14 October 1947.
I really love that Anime and your Videos, details are love ❤
Something that I think deserves mention, is Norden seems to be Denmark, while the Entente Alliance is just Sweden and Norway, and both the alliance and the empire are claiming Norden, so it could be that the Alliance calls themselves triple because they claim to own Norden, but the Empire usually doesn't call them that since they also claim Norden
That was some 10/10 introduction into the video, I was afraid you were going to start talking about another show which would be weird D:
BTW, great content man, I don't think you're gonna explode like Exclamation Point but your stuff is pretty dope!
The hair question mark was a reference to Araragi from bake monogatari.
Yes! I wasn't the only one to notice that hair thing... I agree that really was cute.
On the subject of the boats: I'm not sure about the destroyers, but the battleship is the spitting image of a Bayern-class. The shot you show near the end of the video, if paused in the right point, even lines up 1:1 with one of the photos of Bayern herself on Wikipedia.
4:55 that’s basically the holy roman empire flag
Awesome. More please.
When I saw the Imperial Mage suits, they kinda reminded me of the Uniforms of the German Fallschirmjägers during WW2, might just be me though.
@6:00 The german flight units based maybe on the Seven-league boots.
Germany: “Hey! Shotguns are a violation of the Haig Convention” USA: “Fuck around and find out”
all this season 2 talk makes me wanna cry
Need more Youjo Senki videos!!!!
To point out why the empire uses the flight technology, there is an old German witch tale about the seven
League boots. On full step took you seven leagues in one direction.
In this alternate Universe, I believe the Kalamar Union was never broken. Once upon a time, the King of Denmark, was King of 3 different Kingdoms, Sweden Norway and Denmark. Swedish rebelled against the Union in 1523. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_Union
So if the rebellion was crushed in this Universe, then the Union might have continued until the 1900s. And since Finland was a part of Sweden at the time, Finland would have never been taken from the Unified Tri-Kingdom by Russia.
As for the symbol within the Union Jack, I think that's the Irish Harp??
Amazing video!
At 1:08
Me: What's the plural for "Moose?"
Brian Regan: Moosen!
I have no idea if anyone said this yet, and it's a few years late, but the V1 uses pulse-jets, basically alternate firing RAMjets, to propel themselves.
15:54 Objectiue ---> Objective
The transfer request letter had a few spelling errors as well too.
transfered ---> transferred
controled ---> controlled
Brilliant video. The one interesting point is the entente commander was given a sub machine gun by his daughter. This looked a lot like a MP 18, which was a wwi vintage german sub-machine gun introduced in 1918 to the strossstruppen. I don't think the allies used any of the their own, unless they used Thompson submachine gun, which may have been available before the end of the war.
Really? You missed the fact that Denmark and former Danish holdings in Sweden are part of The Empire? As in not captured but straight up part of it. Okay fair enough for the second part, but the first part...
I kinda think the Imperial Mages fly with only a foot booster not only to show off how compact and superior their magitech is, but also because it puts them in what's basically the Superman pose, and while it's a bit early, Germany did, in WWII, want to create supersoldiers that were known as "Übermensch," based off of the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. Übermensch is best translated to Superior Man, which can then be shortened into the colloquial Superman.
12:32 maybe its Fieseler Fi 103R. crewed version of V-1
In the manga the flags make sense when it becomes a bit more cartoonish when explaining things the flag with the moose on it are drawn as moose and the empire as wolves it makes it easier to discern what country’s are involved
Yes!!!!! It seems the love for Youjo senki is still going strong. Here's hoping for season two
I was really hoping you would talk about the weapons namely the guns so if you make another video how about the tanks and the ships shown in the anime
Also you could compare the manga adaptation and the anime. Like the notfrench mages looks like heavily armored knights instead of just riding a steel horse in the sky
Keep up the good work
I know this is pretty late, but I'm pretty sure they are making a movie before season 2.
Your previous video has been marked by copy right, i couldnt watch it anymore, what a shame. I really like that vid. I think it's the best of Youjo Senki discusion vid
The empire mages reminded more at paratroopers. If used in the episode of the Scandinavian invasion (6?)
I just noticed it again after rewatching the video that you used trails of cold steel 2 ost nice touch. You really liked the game
Moving on since I als rewatch the series I noticed that in ep 2 where a part of a newspaper that may explain the start of the war shows the map of France and Spain which maybe mirrors in our history where Franco Prussian war started that became the catalyst of the formation of the German empire
I am not good in decoding the false alphabet even with the code you shown sorry thus I cannot say for sure that is what it says in the newspaper back in episode 2
But who owns Finland?
Union flag, it's only called the Union Jack when it's on a ship.
What I also notice about the writing is that sometimes you see that alphabet that you show, but also there is also some scenes written in what seems to be old German, and tbh it does not seems even like gibberish I actually could read some words... Not much but something
nice, only anime I saw that Level of text cover was in No game No life.
they actually have 2, Warbeast and Imanity. and in the new movie I saw elf and Dwarfen written down in the trailer.
I think that you are doing wonderful work and I would love to see more of you and your detailed perspective on anime manga and any media.
for what I see, I can get into anything you put out as long as you keep up you personal style of self.
but I think that you should work on you organization of points. for example if you gave us the gun detailed at the end of the video I think the flow of points would have gone better.
or try something new. that is a good way to see all the falts and great points made in your different views.
Thanks for the tips! I'm still figuring out how to do this whole video editing thing, so I really appreciate the feedback.
Oh you did not just use Trails of Cold Steel music in this vid
Love this bizzz.
EDIT thinking about it I shouldn't be surprised because world building is the name of the game for both series'
Say, will make another video like this if your able to find more awesome details? or just another video about Youjo Senki in general? i really love these
HEY at 10:00 I am there on the top left, that was back when I still had that old username, god it feels weird to see my own old comments in video I am watching 3 years later
German soldiers require their boots for war and the mages use boot power to fly.
Still waiting for one of my country's publisher to pick up light novel. One of them did that with Overlord, which I thought was impossible, so who knows.
Anyway - will there be another video on that topic? Cause you know, the well is not infinite.
Mary in the movie be like- "I HAVE THE POWER OF GOD *AND* ANIME ON MY SIDE, *HAAAAAAAAA!!!!*
The Ildonian Chancellory is actually around Spain, and it’s not in the war because it was going through a Civil War during the anime. That is explained in the light novel and manga.
I have an Idea about the Empires Mage Uniform though I doubt its true:
They migth somewhat be a wink to Götz von Berlichingen, a Knigth during the Time of the HRE (I think) who had an Iron Hand Prothesis that was Intricate enogh for him to figth with a Sword. Now of Course the Mages have a Metal Leg instead of a Hand but still. I think its at least Possible.
The hq of the military commandment is the Anime Version of the German Reichstag.
i want to warn Youjo Senki 1 thing... don't mess with vietnamese farmer
the big star is texas, texan foces in the mexico-american war carried banners and american flags with one way bigger star in the middle of the cuadrant
Wait a minute... what about "Deus lo vult" in roman alphabet? Is that a blooper?
The v1 a pulsejet not a rocket.
A pulsejet a combination of jet and diesel engines.
Germany is a mixture of ww1 germany and ww2 third reich. It uses panzer III and Pz IV which were nazi era tech (also v-1 rockets). But the whole trench warfare and attritional war in the rhine river is a lot about ww1.(ww1 western front reference). Tanya is a reference to Erich 'Bubi' Hartmann. Who was extremely young and got so late in the war yet he was so skilled that he became worlds best ace of all time (Tanya became an ace too) who has close to 400 aerial victories. He was dragged to the fronts where figthing was intense because of his skill (just like Tanya!).
Also Von zettour is a reference to von Seeckt.
Ah yes, finding this video in 2020 when we all know what Russia's mage corps are flying on...
if I recall the v1 flying bombs which the Canadians Americans and Brits referred to it as also. Used radio based technology to guide it to its destination, and also it was worth knowing that the British spitfires were able to catch up to these things and shoot them down.
cameron cresswell nope, they are point and shoot, use compass guidance
huh I saw v1 model at virgina that was built near the end of the war that had radio guided based technology
The original plan was to use a type of radio control, but decided against it as they were just going to be aimed towards London in general and there was no need for precision.
if i recall right in the lightnovel mages had not such tools for flying
1 Looks like the kalmar union.
The moose os our national animal in Norway and Yes skiing is a tradisional thing so
in ancient Rome Dakia was a name for centrall Balkans
Season 2...😭😭😭
Still waiting for the Manga or novel to come out.
current fan translation of the manga is around ch 27 or something. Around invasion of Norden. Art is better (it follows original LN) and the bits explaining politics are great.
I don't know about LN now that Yen Press licenced it tho
V1 used pulse jet engines and were quite slow and easy to intercept, the hard part was disabeling a flying bomb without getting blown up yourself
@zano187
The British eventually figured out how to take down a V1 without blowing yourself up in the process. Instead of shooting it down you flew beside it and used your wingtip to flip it over. The gyros couldn't recover and it simply fell out of the sky.
On the Trench Gun issue, to quote Ian from Forgotten Weapons, it kinda went like this:
"Did you know that the Germans actually had the temerity, in the September of 1918, to lodge a formal protest saying the Winchester 97 was a violation of the Hague Conventions and the civilized rules of war. Well, Civilized maybe, rules of war? I don't think so. The US government took a look at this and said, you know what? Aren't you the bastards that came up with the idea of flamethrowers? Didn't you fuckers invent poison gas and start using it too? You know what? We're not gonna stop using shotguns and if you execute any Americans for having shotguns we're gonna execute all our German prisoners too, so how do you like that? Guess what? Six weeks later the war was over, that's how they liked it."
Also, the Mondragon is notable in that it's technically the first semi auto rifle to be adopted by a military (Though really that distinction belongs to the M1 Garand since it was the main service rifle of the US military come World War 2 in more than just name.) The main reason it was ditched by the Mexicans was less because of political issues and more that it was unable to deal with poor quality ammunition which was pretty much the majority of what the Mexican military had.
Welp there's no season 2 ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ
Where tf is season 2
