For me, what this super cut exposes, is that the Skywalker name is tantamount to a curse. A curse that is inflicted upon that family by the Jedi Order. This ascetic, fundamentalist interpretation of the Jedi code as imposed by the council, was always going to fail, or create disruption, with it’s approach to attachment and meaningful, loving relationships. It’s anti human by nature. Look at the sacrifices that had to be made by Quigon and Obi Wan for instance. Their devotion to the code led them to become disillusioned and isolated respectively. Forced to take paths that resulted in inner turmoil and conflict. How can the light side be a force for good if you discount love. How can it prosper if all it brings is pain and a constant fight against fear or doubt or connection. We know the recruiting tactics of the dark side. Exploiting this fault line in the Jedi way. They specifically manipulate those natural feelings of attachment to provoke fear of loss, of abandonment and to promote doubt. Given the Skywalker history of force use, these prodigious talents ultimately resulted in that family being destroyed. Used to suit the political and spiritual aims of the Jedi Council. Blinded by arrogance, they allowed the Sith to rise right under their noses. Annakin was snubbed, untrusted and disrespected. Luke was abandoned, orphaned and left alone and lied to by Obi Wan. Ben was taken from his family and let down by Luke. It’s a litany of dysfunction and failure, and each generation suffers from the same pain and mistakes, like an echo calling from the past. It’s too easy to blame the dark side or the Sith. It was always known they need to protect force users from that pull towards a power they had rejected as unnatural long ago. What needs to be questioned is their ability to plan, organise and set up the order so that they achieve their goals, without sacrificing the very people they should be protecting. I understand completely why Luke says the order must die. Each generation of Skywalker was inevitably destined to be courted by the Sith purely by the nature of their force lineage and the Jedi never really had an answer to this problem. Anyone with that name is now dead. Annakin forced to sacrifice his life for his son. Leia sacrifices herself for Ben and Rey. Luke sacrifices himself for the rebellion. Ben sacrifices himself for Rey. They all give their lives as a means to either redeem themselves or help others. Yet all of these deaths would have been avoidable if the Jedi Order had simply had a human, loving and respectful approach to their training and doctrine. It starts with Annakin, but from that very moment he renounces his faith, as a result of their mismanagement, his family is doomed. Doomed to a life of pain, loss, fear, destruction and ultimately the need to sacrifice their own lives for the greater good. If that isn’t a curse, I don’t know what is. And for me, the Jedi have a lot to answer for considering they’re meant to be the way of the light side. Each Skywalker is faced with the reality of their position as a pawn in the game, and make their choices, but ultimately, their destiny was always going to be dominated by how they were failed, despite their successes.
