Every time I play this and completely brick on my basics somehow, I always hear your voice say "put more basics" and I'm like "THEY'RE THERE THEY JUST WON'T COME TO ME" As always, love the content Jeff, hopefully I can pull that 2nd Gyarados ex soon to give this one a go!
Change starmie for articuno and staryu for misty I went 8-0 with that one Winning against 1 celebi, and 1 pika and 1 mewtwo I lost again articuno 18 rolling 3 energies with misty for both his articunos
Definitely have found I've needed it if I can't get the early combo. If you get the combo pieces and can juggle Starmies then shift the energy onto Gary it's not needed
Been enjoying your games, just waiting on my second Gyrados Ex before I can give this a whir, have been brewing something with Blastoise and Vaporeon which has been quite fun.
@ It’s solid but skews the deck more aggro. I think I would prefer to run the Gyrados version so I have a better place to dump the water energy. Several games end up with more water energy than I end up needing. The no retreat cost on Lumineon is nice though.
When I saw the new Vaporeon's text it immediately reminded me of Deluge Blastoise in the physical tcg from end of gen 5 that let you ignore the 1 energy per turn rule and put as many water energies as you had from your hand to your Pokemon and knew it was going to be really good 😂
@19:00, did you consider Xspeed+Leaf, moving energy over, and then chumping with an Eevee/Vaporeon? With a Sabrina used, I think playing around Celebi high-roll is a more consistent line. Also, with Gyarados, do we know if the random energy discard is or ?
It just destroys one random energy on the field in play, it can also destroy it from the opponents active pokemon as they are being attacked. Statistically, if someone has more energy than the other player it is likely they will lose energy.
@hooglandia doesn't it make more sense at 13:01 to place the energy on Eevee over magikarp because next turn you guarantee Eevee gets to attack vs you got Sabrina'd out and couldn't next turn.
One quick idea for the editor. It would be nice to see the specific pack point requirements. (ie 1000 from mythical island 1200 from genetic apex.) Great video and awesome deck!
I haven't pulled any gyrados ex yet, any recommendations on what i should run in his place? i have the double starmie ex and vaporeon, but no gary unfortunately :(
I had a similar deck idea but I leaned towards Drednaw instead of Gyarados EX with the Energy Disruption. I had to admit, this is the better approach as Gyarados lets you finish the game instead of the coin flips to disrupt the energy of the opponent.
I’ve been playing Gyarados ex with 2 Mew ex, 2 Budding. It’s basically a more consistent Dragonite deck where you stall until you assemble your 4 energy sweeper. 1 Articuno ex as another wall or backup attacker. The deck stalls long enough that you don’t need to flip heads off of Misty, but it can save you from a nut draw by the opponent.
Wondering if there's any merit to cutting one karp to put in an articuno ex or even base arti, like I imagine it's probably worse but maybe the tradeoffs are fun to think about
the 20 damage from A1 eevee almost never leads to your other mons getting a KO they couldnt have gotten without it. the new eevee has a chance to steal the game 1/8 times with 3+ heads.
The expected damage is 10 while the expected damage of regular Eevee is 20. Sure there is the possibility of high roll but sometimes a guaranteed 20 can be critical
I’m currently building a no EX variant with golduck instead of starmie and it feels pretty good. It’s not as strong as the EX version but it’s extremely fun to play. Vaporeon gives this deck an excellent technical feel that doesn’t rely on cheesy coin flips, just sharp energy management and field position. No free energy or turn 1 wins. This deck feels like you’re playing a tactical card game👌🏾
I think the correct build could be 1 stayu and starmie ex, 1 guarados ex ( maybe 1 mkap, 2 gdos) and 2x articuno ex. Magikap and staryu are bad cards. Gets good efter evo, but you also have to evo the Eevee. Articuno being a basic mon makes it crazy fast, using the starmie to rotate between cards and Gary to close out game way too quick. The ability to move energy around this effectively is insane, and articuno is a really good place to put 2-3 energy a turn or two early. Yes, turn 0 kills with Misty has happened to me. Also only 2 energy to retreat is a really good middleway for Gary. I only got the old Gary and a bruxish in place of the starmie, but it runs much smoother than your decks.
Not dumb. It could. I think what makes Gyarados so much better is that 140 damage. That Ohkos Celebi and Mew which are super common right now and regular gyarados only hits for 100.
Respect for avoiding Misty in your list but I think a variation with at least one copy of it included is also viable. Not sure, gonna play some more without it and see how it feels.
All the gyarados I've faced have been articuno/articuno ex variants. Beat all mewtwos as well. Been running victreebell exeggcutor ex deck with a single celebii and being able to bring in weakened articuno, mew and mewtwo has been clutch. So if victreebell becomes popular, starmie may be much more helpful than articuno variants of this deck
I've noticed that every deck feels better with 5 basics. I don't know what the optimal number of basics is. It's probably deck dependent, but 5 always feels good. Emphasis on the word "feels", I have no clue if it's actually better or worse
Thought Gyarados EX was trash, changing my mind! I do like that with Giovanni it tags Mewtwo. Blastoise EX gives more knockouts against Eggs EX, Pidgeot EX and Charizard EX though it costs more resource and the stage 2 evo line reduces trainers so it's definitely a meta call for sure.
I've been playing a similar list. Basically without Starmie line for 1 Articuno, 2 Misty, and a Gio for the Mewtwo one shot wish. Has been doing very well. I feel like everyone is playing Celebi or Fire Aggro to kill Celebi.... Makes me feel more powerful than I am.
Jeff, did you test Articuno and Misty instead of Starmie in this build? I get that on stream you said Starmie EX retreats for free but this also means Leaf is a dead draw when you already have Starmie setup.
I'm rocking only one Leaf bc I felt a second was dead a good amount of the time in this list. I replaced it with one Misty (you can sub it out with another potion or xspeed, I just like the Misty high roll). Also, I feel Articuno doesn't have the tempo like Starmie. The two energy attacks really slap hard. Also with an Articuno list, you really need two Leaf. lots of 2 cost retreat mons.
The free retreats with starmie with no tempo loss because you can move the energy is the entire core premise of the deck. If your losing the energy on retreats then vaporeon is far less useful as well and you're just back to old misty coin flips
so far I'm 12-0 bringing just basic fire pokemon lol i learned all these decks require some setup, but my ninetails, rapidash (new), and magmar blaine deck is literal peak gaming 😂 i always dish out high dmg in 2 turns.
What are you talking about? There was only one game that he started with Magikarp (and had one other option). Otherwise, he only started Magikarp when it was his only basic.
Every time I play this and completely brick on my basics somehow, I always hear your voice say "put more basics" and I'm like "THEY'RE THERE THEY JUST WON'T COME TO ME"
As always, love the content Jeff, hopefully I can pull that 2nd Gyarados ex soon to give this one a go!
There is no way I'm not running double Misty in a deck like this
Yeah I would at least run a single of her just in case lol
Change starmie for articuno and staryu for misty I went 8-0 with that one
Winning against 1 celebi, and 1 pika and 1 mewtwo
I lost again articuno 18 rolling 3 energies with misty for both his articunos
Smart
@@IramDiazsame for me. Tbh i dont love vaporeon so I utilize other water types
Definitely have found I've needed it if I can't get the early combo. If you get the combo pieces and can juggle Starmies then shift the energy onto Gary it's not needed
Thanks for the deck list, Gyarados was the only ex i got from this expansion, looks really fun to play with, thank you
Been enjoying your games, just waiting on my second Gyrados Ex before I can give this a whir, have been brewing something with Blastoise and Vaporeon which has been quite fun.
In the Gyrados EX waiting room but have been enjoying Lumineon in its place for now. Thanks for the content!
How's it been working? Lumineon seems like a card I'd really like but haven't really messed around with it yet.
@ It’s solid but skews the deck more aggro. I think I would prefer to run the Gyrados version so I have a better place to dump the water energy. Several games end up with more water energy than I end up needing. The no retreat cost on Lumineon is nice though.

Doesn't matter regardless if opponent has exeggutor ex in hand
One quick idea for the editor. It would be nice to see the specific pack point requirements. (ie 1000 from mythical island 1200 from genetic apex.) Great video and awesome deck!
This is exactly how I wanted to see this deck built
I have been loving this deck. so much fun.
I haven't pulled any gyrados ex yet, any recommendations on what i should run in his place? i have the double starmie ex and vaporeon, but no gary unfortunately :(

been loving this deck and new vaporeon :)

Wow i built this deck but with misty+arti over starmie and was having lots of fun - glad to see the vap gary shell has legs!
Wondering if there's any merit to cutting one karp to put in an articuno ex or even base arti, like I imagine it's probably worse but maybe the tradeoffs are fun to think about
Hey jeff i was running a similar build to this but using the original eevee, do you feel that the new eevee is definitely better?
the 20 damage from A1 eevee almost never leads to your other mons getting a KO they couldnt have gotten without it. the new eevee has a chance to steal the game 1/8 times with 3+ heads.
The expected damage is 10 while the expected damage of regular Eevee is 20. Sure there is the possibility of high roll but sometimes a guaranteed 20 can be critical
Feels like the rest of the water type cards have to pay for Misty' sin
This deck looks super fun! I got spoon fed a celebi ex deck so i have that and i wanna try moltres ex with the blaine Pokemon to see if it feels okay.
I’m currently building a no EX variant with golduck instead of starmie and it feels pretty good. It’s not as strong as the EX version but it’s extremely fun to play. Now this is the type of build I was looking for. I wanted no misty & 1 sabrina
so happy to see non-misty water decks

My boy is relevant! Alakazam ex next!
I want to use my old full art eevees so bad but I want the high rolls :c
Possible a dumb question, but is this at all viable with the original Gyarados?
Not dumb. It could. I think what makes Gyarados so much better is that 140 damage. That Ohkos Celebi and Mew which are super common right now and regular gyarados only hits for 100.
why the decision to exclude misty?
I love this deck. I named it Ebb&Flow
Respect for avoiding Misty in your list but I think a variation with at least one copy of it included is also viable. Not sure, gonna play some more without it and see how it feels.

They could have made Gyrados discard your energy in his text because that is what I see in all of the games in this video LMAO
I initially thought Gyaru ex wouldn't be that good because of the 4-energy attack and the discard effect being random. But 140 is A LOT of damage.
I've noticed that every deck feels better with 5 basics. I don't know what the optimal number of basics is. It's probably deck dependent, but 5 always feels good.
Emphasis on the word "feels", I have no clue if it's actually better or worse

Blastoise EX gives more knockouts against Eggs EX, Pidgeot EX and Charizard EX though it costs more resource and the stage 2 evo line reduces trainers so it's definitely a meta call for sure.
is this deck better without misty?
Short answer no. Jeff just hates misty. His personal choice not to run it.
Ive been running Mew in Celebi and it makes the Mewtwo and Charizard matchups way easier
Super sad that i still don't have big fish. I'll get em soon though!
Could name this deck Penguinz01 with how we’re delivering moist critical hits with Gyarados Ex left and right
I swapped one Leaf for a Misty and got 6th place tonight in the Skyfieod Skirmish!
Nice! Congratulations.
why don't you play misty in the deck?
Jeff, did you test Articuno and Misty instead of Starmie in this build? I get that on stream you said Starmie EX retreats for free but this also means Leaf is a dead draw when you already have Starmie setup.
I'm rocking only one Leaf bc I felt a second was dead a good amount of the time in this list. I replaced it with one Misty (you can sub it out with another potion or xspeed, I just like the Misty high roll).

i learned all these decks require some setup, but my ninetails, rapidash (new), and magmar blaine deck is literal peak gaming 😂 i always dish out high dmg in 2 turns.
The play style of this deck is similar to Pikachu ex with apex Raichu
Doesn't need double misty however I'm in a 200+ touring 3-0 and I cut one edges for one misty
I thought twitch chat was bad…
dude forgot misty
This deck doesn't work. Whatever you need is always at the bottom of the deck. And you keep drawing shit like leaf, sabrina etc.
You aren’t gonna make it long here.
bro can you just start with evee... theres no point to start with magicarp and always waste 1 enrgy my eyes brother..
What are you talking about? There was only one game that he started with Magikarp (and had one other option).
Otherwise, he only started Magikarp when it was his only basic.
Retreating the Magikarp is not a waste of energy? Reading the card explains the card.
Not only all of the above, but the attack doesn't make you discard the energy, so it isn't a waste, unlike retreating it.
