In this video, Joe works with acrylics and shows you how he paints crashing waves, ocean water, sea foam, and what happens with water on a beach!
This is a great example of why I love learning on YT, not only can you find instruction on what you want to do, in this case I was looking for 'painting waves with acrylics', but you can sometimes find someone doing almost exactly what you want to learn. I will be painting a mural of a seascape on a friends fish and chip shop next month, and I think I will actually break out the plastic for the full lesson on this dudes site. So remember: if you are several beers into an evening and are making promises for creative services you are only semi skilled in, always allow for at least a month to procrastinate and 3 days to practice before doing the job.
All you need is some floetrol. bit of paint, and some tarps. Right then. Cover me, I'm goin in!
Exactly 😂❤!
I just wanted to thank you for the kind gesture of sharing your amazing talent. It continues to blow me away at how someone of your caliber cares enough about others to turn turn on to what they know. Your painting is Beautiful, spectacular soothing & stimulating at the same time. Again, thank so much! You're a wonderful teacher btw. :)
Debbie Swanson Yes, I do agree With you! Generous and instruktive 🎨🇸🇪💝

“My painting is wrong.” I think that’s what makes it art. It’s your version of a beach. I love it.
Probably the best tutorial on wave painting I've ever seen. Thanks Joe.
I'm also a painter and muralist and I have got to tell ya joe, it was a real pleasure watching and listening to you. I kept shaking my head yes as I listened to your bits of wisdom. And it's fun to see your techniques. Very similar to my style. Keep painting, never stop creating!
Marvellous! In a class of your own. Your depictions of water are so subtle and complex, as well as true to the spirit and feel of the ocean.
One of the most important aspects to learning any new skill is the understanding of function and relation to form. This gentleman understands the way waves function. He mentions coral. He describes currents after he describes how light plays a role beneath the waves and how both flow together as he forms what what we see here. It's clear to me that this wisdom aides him the recreation and the reinterpretation of what is arguably much more than a wave. This is a mural created by a young artistic craftsman.
When I heard the waves at the end, I could smell the ocean! Very beautiful.
Salute to those who transfer their experience with ease simplicity and clarity.
That looks unbelievably pretty. Wow. I hope one day I can paint like that.
VitriolicGhost me too
First of all this guy was born with this gift and oviously did a few years of college and university........ xx
I've watched other artists but keep coming back to this one, he is my hero and I hope to glean from him and create some beautiful artwork like his, someday!
Love how there are layers under layers, like I never though of the artists energy this much and how beautiful this is. Each painting has a story underneath!
Oh you're like a modern Bob Ross! new favorite!
Sometimes I build a frown out of a smile.. 😉
I have been an artist since I could pick up a crayon and draw on a kitchen wall. As I I've grown up I have worked in all kinds of media's working on portraits and landscapes. I have never been able to paint seascapes. With todays technology I can now see how it's done, and Joe you have inspired me to give it another try at the age of 69. I was in Panama City Beach watching the waves come in and go out during the time hurricane Harvey was hitting Texas, so I was able to film some great wave pattern's, thanks again.
Joe iv been drawing for years but was never to confident to try painting ....I grew up watching Bob Ross and was always amazed by how his paintings would flow ..... a awhile ago I started painting scenes with spray paint and it kinda got me more into murals... but your videos are really helping me understand so much more about all that goes into it....and how to blend with just basic colors...and understanding perspective.and painting water in different ways...... I just wanted to say thank for taking the time to post these videos....you truly an amazing artist!....thanks again.
Your whole canvas is so beatiful! ( before the painting session)
Your whole canvas is extremely beautiful!! (after the painting session )
I don't usually draw landscapes, but your videos have inspired me. I am going to give it a shot. Thank you.
You are such a great teacher! I learn so much from every video and I stay up waaaay too late watching them! Thank you for being such a humble, down-to-earth guy and for taking the time to share your incredible talents with the rest of us.
muraljoe I can't begin to explain how much inspiration, motivation and technique you have given me. I've tried so many different art styles(clay modeling, stipple, portraits, oil paintings, stencils, tattooing, vinyl) and when I come across your work I just want to dive right into painting! You have so much positive feedback and tools to share its heart warming. I could praise you on your talent for hours, but your work speaks for itself. You're an amazing artist(to say the least) and anytime I need a good kick in the arse to become motivated I watch one of your videos. You're truly and inspiration and great teacher! I speak for everyone when I say you're an artistic blessing!! 🙌🙏🎨💯
amazing! it's beautiful! love how you break it up, and the colors make it look truly real! thanks!
i just start to paint and i love watching your videos you are amazing Artist joe.i like what u said feel free to paint a million wrong paint in join the club
Easier said than done.
You're the best teacher I've learned a lot when you explain shadows and the structure of things and all that. You're the only one I can really learn from.
Sir: you are one of the BEST visual teachers I have ever seen and trust me, I've seen more than you are old! Great Job!
LOVE that intro!
Thank you for sharing, Joe! You're such a gifted and generous man!

Oh my gosh, you're incredible man
How ,magnificent was this video of you painting these crashing waves, were! You were so “ into” everything you painted. You explained each and everything so well. Thank you so much for sharing this with us!
Love it especially the use of the roller "this one smears as it rolls to mix the paints" - love it!
Thanks for posting this I'm going to try this out today. This is a very helpful video. I subscribed .
I just love your paintings! So much more skilled required than those pretentious idiots who do abstract paintings of an ink blot
Joe, I have seen some gorgeous paintings and paint myself in oils, but you are the best artist I’ve ever seen. You probably don’t think so, but we’re our worst critic. I’ve watched you off and on, but today I’ve watched for 4or5 hours and I don’t believe anyone can do any better. Awesome work!!!!👍🏻
These are wonderful! Anyone I go to beach with never lets me get my fill of looking at the water, these videos are simply perfect!
Impossible! Your work area is so clean... Whats behind that camera
This is really awesome just saw youre chanell I love youre work dude I would love to see more tutorials and paitings :D
Whew! Your knowledge and training and talent are "just phenomenal!" I am painting a mural now and your water techniques are exactly what I needed. If I didn't live on an island I would attend your workshops : ) I am so happy to have found you! Love your teaching as its "true teaching!" I am like a sponge ...Thank you!
That is absolutely breathtaking. I'm showing my 15 year old daughter how to do ripples as she is nearing her exams. She's done them like snake scales and needs to blend them into the water. Her pictures are amazing. I told her to go on RUclips to look at tutorials yours is the one I've sent her. It's blown me away.
Shame on the 477 miserable people.
wow amazing
Whenever I get stuck on how to paint waves and the sea your videos help and inspire me to get it right. Thank you.
Dynamic style with a fresh, brisk approach that is full of life and creativity !!
Excellent work and painting. Thanks.
"when there is less green there is more red" where can i find this kind of knowledge..book?
where can i go to learn all this??? i know theres schools but is whats the difference between the schools
Wow!! I'm a retired art teacher and this is one of the best painting technique videos I have seen!
You helped me so much I could cry of joy! I haven't been able to capture the Ocean, waves, ripples, the many colors, and this video has helped me tremendously. I've tried on my own without any guidance and you have cleared up all my concerns within my own pieces. Thank you for existing.
nice job
I love this!♡
Love this!
This is the best way to learn painting! I can see it again and again. And it´s free!
I loved what you said between 8:20 and 8:30. I keep looking at my work at the moment questioning my work. it's a relief you do too, but obviously as a spectator, I see nothing wrong in your picture. You do, but you have a lovely way of taking your painting as it comes and not worrying. It's very reassuring, so thank you:)
best part of ur job is u choose a huge canvas and didn't make it fast.
You make me want to throw my brushes away and take up line dancing or skydiving...
😭😭😭👌
Lol. I was thinking about throwing mine out and being a bartender.🤣
I ended up watching a string of your videos, and was like "God....you gave this guy talent. Lord, this much talent just HAS to glorify You somehow." And then I had an urge to go to your website, which I've never done before with any other RUclipsr, and lo and behold....you're a brother in Christ. Just wanted you to know that these videos led to God being praised tonight. :)
My dear Joe, of all the artists I have seen on You Tube you are one of the best. I mean it! You are the perfect teacher of art, and I love your technique. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

ВЫ МАСТЕР!!!!!!! ОЧЕНЬ КРАСИВО!!!!
You have two gifts, painting and teaching! Well done, great explanation!
where there’s less green, there’s more red.
roll and smear with a small roller, 45 degree angle ( brilliance! )
blend with brush
feathered tapers. keep the angles in sync.
sometimes a frown, sometimes smiles. sometimes building a smile out of frowns.
level spots
bright green!
making the waterwall wave
swooping the break - the white
Break unevenly
five stripes of colour in the breaking wave...colour/shadow...
follow the lines in the wavelets and seafoam
find the lines and connect them
...
putting shadow under the little strands of seafoam on the beach
more white than one might imagine!
beautiful!
The painting is moving in my eyes hahaha
I'm painting along with Joe and it looks like trash. But @ 8:20 I wasn't so mad anymore. :)
Your enthusiasm is contagious.
And what a wonderfull blue green color making the feeling of feeling the waves rolling in eternal rhytmic movements of eternal change - beautifull painting and very dreamy experience of observing and listening to the sea
Is this oil or acrylic? What medium are you using?
I'm guessing it's acrylic as areas are dry (when he is touching it)
Yep, it's acrylic. I updated the description. Thanks for asking!
+muraljoe hi do you have a website where I can buy your art from?
What brand of acrylic paint are you using?

Mural Joe ,it is nice 2 see young people doing great things .Man ,you have it together!
I showed about 10 people his tutorials. We cannot believe how well his methods work!
this was a great video, but you had changed the painting alot and added heaps of details while off camera. i noticed that at least 4 times during the video
1:19 He pre-warned you.
Todd Cercone he said fine tune it, lol whats the point in doing a tutorial if youre going to do critical details off camera
Jack Beam I know its a lot of work, but try to just copy what you see for starters. Keep on comparing and changing untill it looks the same.
Jack Beam The full tutorial is available at learn.muraljoe.com
Jack Beam The missing steps are probably where we should add your own touches. I'm a beginner here and will use his lesson as a foundation to build upon. Also, I never would have thought to use a roller on a canvas. What a great ocean texture it leaves.
Strange lonely big wave on a flat sea...
It's just for training purpose
It could just be shore break
i was born and raised in Barbados...I paint and trust me sometimes a seemingly calm flat sea can produce a good sized swell right as it breaks on the shore and if you are sitting on the beach it looks bigger than it is!! this artistic value is awesome!!

Your lessons have helped me so incredibly much with my art work. You're amazing. Thank you for teaching us what you've learnt.
I've been watching videos on painting seascapes. I really like your technique and agree with you when you say no one should copy but to build their own techniques. I can see some things I like here and also in other videos. Bottom line, we are individuals but we all need teaching!! Thanks; really enjoyed this.
Water is one of the hardest things to paint and have it look really good. You have nailed it!!!!! Beautiful!!
Painting a seascape for my mother. Your video helped to calm my nerves. I like the 'no right painting' and mentally I have joined that club. Thanks
It is an absolute joy to watch you paint. You definitely have a gift!
I'm learning far more from you than the time I wasted at The School of Visual Arts decades ago. You are fabulous painter and humble teacher. My son's who are also artistically inclined come to visit me and we watch your videos together. I'll be ordering full versions from your website for them as presents. Thank you so very much. Have a wonderful summer.
All techniques and tips are appreciated! My art dwells where i dream of being on any given day. Some days i love the mountains and many, many times, the beach, ocean or waterway .. I put my eyes in the picture, imagining a perfect morning, afternoon..ect. i need so many little tips to make it all come alive right before my very eyes :) thanks, love the clues on how to make my beach and sand come together better.
I always love to listen and watch your excellent artistry and redemption. A wondrous heartfelt labor of love.
Love your style of both painting and teaching.
Thank you for sharing your techniques! You are so talented in a big way and I don’t perceive wrongs in your paintings only rights. Painting a mural is something that I feel so beyond me but you do it with ease! Again, thank you!
You make it look so easy Joe, but it is practice, practice, practice and I'm learning to enjoy the process....I wanna hurry and get it done.....but I'm learning to take my time. I love your work.
How fun! I love doing murals! We painted a beach on wood today.
I so appreciate the details about what you do and why you do it.
absolutely best waves i have ever seen painted..I am a beginner and will be trying your technique.thank you.
Thank you for sharing. I have noticed in my own painting that I have improved A lot from 20 yrs ago to now. That's not from years of pracice. As I paint I start to realize major details that really pop. I just subscribed to your chanel. Watching you really helps me have a good Idea. I will still have my own technique. I get what you said changing your techinques. I love it. Again, Thank you so much.
its mural, its wall paint, but he is showing his technic and you can use it with the medium of your choice. love it he is so good with water and makes it look so easy.
I can't see anything wrong with this Joe! it's brilliant🤗🖌🎨 and it will make me look closer at colours and how waves move next time I go to the beach💎
You have amazing talent.
I've subscribed and just began spray paint art a few months ago.
I've improved a lot after 55 paintings.
Every form of painting gives us insight to bring our works to life.
Thanks Joe.
Roger from outback Australia.
I just found your RUclips mural videos and I must say you are a wonderful teacher and thanks for sharing your techniques. Thank you!
Thank you Mural Joe for the wonderful example of how to do this. You are an inspiration to me as an teacher and painter.
Nice. Totally gonna use that quote...
"One thing I can tell you is that my paintings are wrong. They always are. Whats fun are the little things that are right...So! Feel free to do a million wrong paintings. Join the club."
That is gold.
Beautiful and funny rhythms from painting these patterns of sea foam - and it seem to be quite a meditative job - nice listening to rhythms from waves
I have been wanting to paint again after a long, long, hiatus but I have been hesitant because I want to start with a new medium and I did not want to make too many mistakes.....thanks for your inspiration and words of wisdom. I am excited now to make a hole crap load of mistakes. :) Your the bets!!!!
I bought the tutorial for this and can't wait to start painting. Will be doing paintings for two of my five brothers. One just bought a house across the road from the water, so this will be perfect. You are awesome.
5 stripes of color: from top to bottom: white, bluish-white, shadow-blue, saturated color (green), shadow-blue. I followed this technique and it works WONDERFULLY
I've always wanted to know how to make the light shine through the wave, and you have shown that and so much more - great work, thanks!
The tips for shadows and the way to make them more realistic are so useful. Thanks for sharing
I'm always in awe with your work. I learn a lot from you and I love how you geek out explaining. 👍🎨🎨🎨
Hello, I just discovered by chance your video on you tube, it is with pleasure that I am your gestures. Your fingering is that of a great artist, you restore nature as it takes your contemplator; once caught in the rythm of the waves, I could not look away. Your method is as simple as it is attractive. It's really nice to see your gestures evolve to offer us wonders. Bravo congratulations and bravo, I'll hat you. Thank you and good evening or good night.
Nice acrylics painting!
Acrylic paint is a fast-drying paint containing pigment suspension. Acrylic paints are water-soluble, but become water-resistant when dry. It has the advantage of drying faster and being water soluble. I have seen some amazing acrylics paintings at Indian At Ideas, an online art gallery.
One of the best beach paintings I've seen!
the best seascape artist and teacher in the market !!!! good video joe, like your art...
