Every Car Is A Great Car: 2005 Ford Escape - A Future Classic in Disguise.

  • Released for the 2001 Model Year, The Ford Escape, along with its triplet counterparts Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute, entered the new millennium with what would ultimately become a throwback to a now by-gone era of small, boxy, simple SUV's. Vehicles like the Suzuki Samurai and Sidekick, Isuzu VehiCROSS, Chevy and Geo Tracker, and countless Toyotas, Jeeps, and Land Rovers are some of the hottest and most appreciating assets on the market of emerging classics, and here at Janky AF we argue that the first generation Ford Escape should be seen as a cheap and plentiful option when considering this segment.

    I've heard **THAT** sound before! These things actually hold up. Decently capable, moderate power, they just kind of work and get down the road with no fuss. GREAT vehicle for camping, day trips surfing, mild off-road, etc. Kind of like a well-mannered Jeep Cherokee from the '90s. I would totally buy another one of these first or second gen's for like 5-10k. The 4WD did work, worked quite well. I had the column shifter which I think is actually better, considering it maximizes the space. These cars are nothing special, but nothing wrong. They work, they run, they're easy to fix. Solid.

      That near-dead battery start-up sequence was so dramatic, I couldn't have re-created that for movie-magic if I tried. I love your summary of the 1st gen escape, couldn't have said it better, and great observation about the column shift. I remember in the 90's the buick would have the column shift and the pontiac would have the floor shift, cause it was "sportier" but its like who are we kidding? So totally agree with the ergonomic benefits of the column shift. I love the column shift on my 93 Aerosrar, when you put it in gear it feels like an occaision, like you are embarking on an adventure every time you crank that lever down. janky do thanky for the comment.

      Janky do Thanky! Yea I have heard a lot of criticisms of this car, but when push comes to shove I still see a ton of them out there in the wild, and I think the boxy styling just keeps aging better and better. I think overall kind of an underrated era for Ford, but perhaps thats just my nostalgia creeping in. Really enjoyed this little ride tho, glad you are enjoying yours as well. Cheers.

    Duratec 3.0 was from the late 90s Taurus and Jaguar X Type. It was common architecture with the 2.5L V6 version in the Mystique and Contour. And European Mondeo. It was the most expensive engine development of its kind for that era. I owned several in the Contour SVT flavour😊

    • @JankyAF
      @JankyAF  Год назад

      You had an SVT Contour Harry!? One of my favorite models ever, so understated, actually think I would rather have one then the Taurus SHO with the Yamaha V6 that has become a modern classic, and rightfully so, but always had a thing for those contours. I guess the only thing left to do is build an SVT Aerostar...

      @@JankyAF Contour SVT was my first car - one that I had coveted for years until I got myself a used copy that I could barely afford. In total drove three different CSVTs over the years (Silver, Black, Toreador). SHO had been my dream when I originally got my license, but it would be another 8 years before I could buy a car of my own.

    Fun fact.the plaque on the escape that says 4WD, is actually a lie. It only has all wheel drive. There are three different choices, front wheel drive, all wheel drive, and actual 4WD. I have one and it has an actual knob where the plaque is to change it from all time 4WD, to 4 wheel lock. My grandma had one that was almost exactly what in the video was like, and it only had all wheel drive according to the mechanic and other people we knew

      Janky do thanky for the excellent and detailed comment. I definitely had a sneaking suspicion that it was indeed an AWD system on this particular vehicle. I see a lot of cars with "tiptronic" transmissions listed as manuals, so its not really surprising, although pretty ballsy on Ford's part to just slap that on there. Lesson to Ford, never underestimate grandma. Janky do thanky again

    • @davidkroondijk9365
      @davidkroondijk9365 10 месяцев назад +1

      Close but not quite the escape actually runs 90/10 f/r power all the time and goes 50/50 when it detects wheel slip the 2001-2004 models had a switch to enable locked 50/50 power but they removed that in 05 and put that plaque where the switch was. but the system was basically the same just with the switch removed so in a super technical sense it was 4wd system they just for whatever reason decided to rob us of the switch @@JankyAF

    Affordable and dependable? Never had one but I have looked at some for sale, seems to be pulling good icy weather

    • @JankyAF
      @JankyAF  2 года назад +1

      Definately affordable, dependability depends on who you ask, but you certainly see many high mileage examples for sale. This one actually recently went in for some service, including some coil packs, but for not a huge sum of money it seems to be going strong at 165k. I'm sure the California history helps this cause. I do think the styling will continue to age well and in another 10 years it will look dated enough to start capturing some true vintage boxy vibes. Manual transmission are very rare and a manual transmission AWD is extremely rare, only turned up a few on a nationwide search, but that would be a real gem, here's one with 225,000 on it: www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-Ford-Escape-d330#listing=328700068/NONE

    • @JankyAF
      @JankyAF  Год назад

      Hey there! Hope this isnt reaching you too late. Thanks for watching the vid. To be completely honest, i think a first car should always be a honda or a toyota. Can probably find a late model Camry, Carolla, Accord, or Civic for around that price, and older cars with higher mileage are always gambles, but honda and toyota’s track record is unmatched when it comes to this category. If you are set on an SUV and/or awd, id look at an older RaV4. And regardless of what car u end up with Id strongly consider a PPI - pre purchase inspection, many shops for a reasonable fee will travel to go look at the car in person and give you a professional assessment of what condition they think its in. Its hard to say precisely if that deal u have is a good one or not, used car prices have been going steadily up, coil packs dont seem like a big deal but if its having misfiring it could also be oil getting past your valve cover gasket or a myriad of other things. Sorry to give such a long non-answer, but id strongly suggest the PPI and shopping around, also feel the seller out, does it have service records, does it look like the rest of the car has been maintained, interior, tires, brakes, etc. i wish you luck in whatever decision you make. I think these are cool little SUV’s but generally with a higher mileage vehicle that you want to be reliable I think honda and toyota are on balance the safer bet.

    Ill pass on the 2nd revision ford escapes with transmissions/differentials that blow up every 100k miles, they have far less features than the originals and are incredibly unreliable (this comment was made my 1st gen column shifter gang)

    • @JankyAF
      @JankyAF  10 месяцев назад +2

      hehe, janky do thanky for the comment, I do love a column shifter. Its funny I have to be honest I thought the 2nd gen was just a face lift on the 1st gen, and didn't know they differentiated it as a fully unique generation, or if I knew this I had forgotten. At least they look decent, but I generally dislike all facelifts on vehicles. The 3rd gens just look weird to me, and the 4th gen, with the Aston Martin grille, I have to admit look pretty decent, like a cheap Porsche Macan. Janky do thanky for providing me with this knowledge, I learned a little bit today.
