Looks like a great idea. My Prokraft mandrel sheared off after doing only three bottle stoppers, I had to make another from a 6mm bolt. I like the look of the new bottle stoppers.
Hi Tony, sorry if you've had a problem with a mandrel, if you put a note on your next order I will replace it for you. Maybe you had an odd one, they are hardened steel and generally tough as old boots, the one I show in the video is my original about 2 ½ years old and probably having done about 40-50 stoppers.
With the mandrel I usually support at tailstock end when doing first cuts, when I've got it to nearly the right shape then I remove the tailstock and trim the end off - however - the arbour is MUCH easier. Those insert screws are even tougher - but I fear I may have now given you a challenge to break one of those too! I confess I don't always remember to put everything in the videos - at the end of the arbour video I used it to mount a polishing disc - worked a treat but I forgot to turn the camera on.
Hi Eric, no you only need a thread cutter if you are using acrylic or plastic based blanks, for wood use the insert screw. Generally the only time you need a thread cutter with wood is if you have exceptionally hard tight grained blanks like a very hard yew.
Yes you can but a thread cutter is quicker, easier and if you are going to do a few probably cheaper in the long run. There is something quite satisfying about cutting your own thread into things -maybe thats just me!
I bought both kits and neither have the threaded insert. Just the bottlestopper and a threaded piece, one end is M8 to go into the bottlestopper and a wood cutting thread at the other end. So I wasted £10 on the M6 threaded inserts, and no way of making the arbor......
Hello Ken, I can find no order on our system for you, the connector you describe is not one of ours it sounds like an Axminster one, we don't sell M6 threaded inserts only M8. Our videos relate to our products only and are tested and checked as interchangeable. Every one of our bottle stoppers has an M8 thread with hex hey fitting at one end and is supplied with a wood thread insert. I know this as they are all tested checked and assembled here in the UK by us.
@@prokraftuk my apologies, they were from Axminster, thought they were the same ones as they sell under the name Craftpro. I will check out your website, apologies again.. Regards Ken
Thanks Jon. Superb tutorial. Very informative, easy to follow and succinct. Off to make one now.... 👍
Glad it was helpful!

Jon, if you use the screw inserts do you need a thread cutter? ❤️👍

Prokraft thank you Jon. Can you Epoxy an insert into acrylic blanks?
