I'd keep the nice chassis & packaging from the xbox and sell the innards in a donor chassis. Next time you fix an xbox, you'll be able to sell it looking pretty and hopefully make a little extra profit
Joey one pro-tip for the ultrasonic cleaner, a lot of the noise it makes comes from the lid rattling against the chassis. Put a strip of electrical tape around the edges to create a soft edge and it will be quieter! Cheers
I do small engine repair for a living and use an ultrasonic cleaner daily. The warm-up time is the most annoying part however you can get a little device called a "stinger" that just plugs into the wall and kind of looks like a light bulb on the end with a swirly coil and will heat up your water 10 times faster. When the water is up to desired temp then remove the stinger and use the ultrasonic cleaner
It sounds like a regular portable water heater we used to make a tea back in 80-90s. The ones that cost like 3$ on Ali? On the other hand, I'm kind of surprised that those ultrasonic cleaners (while being relatively expensive) don't have the proper quick heating. I always wanted one but now I will think twice about such purchase.
@@sarmatiko Correct name is immersion heater. Ultrasonic cleaners usually only have about 500W heaters and you're trying to heat 10-15 litres so it takes a while. The immersion heaters are similar power to an electric kettle, so 2000W or more. I guess the low power in the ultrasonic is it's probably a bad idea to have something that hot near all the electronics.
I'm commenting as I'm watching but I would strongly recommend soaking the board in IPA after you've taken it from the ultrasonic since IPA will help displace water and will also make it dry faster
Also running with the ultrasonic feature on will help warm the water up but if you use the Stinger like I mentioned in the previous comment then you don't need to run it since the Stinger will heat it up
A suggestion for the ultrasonic cleaner. Take a Ziploc bag or similar and throw your part(s) in that, fill the bag with your solution then zip it up squeezing out the air as you do and place it in the cleaner. Use normal hot as you can get it out of the tap water and fill it to the point that the bag is submerged. Turn on your cleaners heaters at that point to pre-heat the water/solution. I have used Simple Green at the recommended 13 parts water to 1 part simple green mixed up in an old rinsed out laundry soap container for over ten years at a temp of 60c with 5 minute increments. You can reuse the "Bag-of-Solution" a few times and drain out the water between cleaning sessions. A big old "Fluffy" Towel (high thread count) and a hair dryer help to dry the board as well. Pull the part out of the "Bag-of-Solution" and immediately flush the part/board with tap water as hot as it will go. Bounce the part gently off the side of the tub to knock off the majority of the water and place the part/board on one half of the towel while (A) Grabbing the other side of the towel and folding it over the part/board and simultaneously blowing hot air on it with the hair dryer. Basically you are making a "Pouch" to insert the part with the towel that will absorb water and help keep it good and warm while drying it off with the air dryer. I used to then drop the part into another baggie that had 99% isopropyl alcohol in it to help flush the water but now I only do that on boards that are "Tight" and I cannot get good air flow around the chips, caps etc. An old toaster oven can be used as a "One last Shot" in case you think you may still have moisture in, on, around or under the circuits.
Joey, please, save yourself a lot of trouble... put that ultrasonic cleaner where spills can't get to your computer and peripherals... please. Put it on a table or cart that is not connected in any way to those things. Then when you make your mix, just put it in another container, like a gallon jug that has marks on it for "ish" measurement (like 10ths). Put the cleaner and water in the jug then just pour from that into the Ultrasonic. Please. It would be very sad to see you have the kind of accident with this that I can see coming. 😢
I had one incident where I had carelessly kept my laptop on floor from a morning gaming session and the bucket of water I was carrying for bath, collapsed and drenched it. Thankfully the laptop was not completely bust and I could get it repaired for some money. But lesson learned, keep liquids away from electronics!!
When you showed us the "finger-cheese" between the pad and housing and was disgusted; Early this spring I had a customer come in with a laptop that looked like that... The thing was COVERED in it! Keyboard, screen, chassis; Everything! When the customer took it out of the bag, I demonstratively walked away and got latex gloves and put them on, refusing to even touch it, unprotected. I did take it in and do a clean, and it was spotless after cleaning. When I informed the customer about the state and that it could easily destroy the computer, they looked at me like I was pulling their leg. (I'd hate to have to see their house, given the state of that laptop...)
Hello Joey! A quick suggestion, I have seen somewhere a trick for ultrasonic cleaner where they have put the board in a jar with the cleaning solution and then put it into the ultrasonic cleaner. This way you don't need to change the whole cleaning solution in the ultrasonic cleaner, only in the jar and it doesn't come with any performance downsides. I hope this helps. Keep up the good work, love your videos!
Hi, to clean electronics in the ultrasonic cleaner without rusting all those metal shields and stuff, just fill the cleaner with fresh water, put a jar filled with paint thinner in the water, put your PCBs into the jar and run it, the paint thinner cleans PCBs really well and there will be no rusting, you can also use alcohol.
i invested in a brand new hot air rework station i feel confident though still nerves with my skills i trust joeys setup lol thank you joey for your content it really does help
To clean the flux off of my boards, I put them in a ziplock bag with 99% ipa. I then place the bag into the ultrasonic, then fill to the fill line with hot water and clean. Works great.
Joey, re the factory mask bubbling/flaking in the ultrasonic bath, you may need to dehydrate the PCBs beforehand to get all of the trapped moisture out from between the layers (don't quote me, not an expert by any means)
The ultrasonic waves are what does the real work, there are deinoised water filter kits for car cleaning might be a cheaper option for you. The ultrasonic baths heat up quiet quickly. You need to wash the boards straight after and probably a flush with IPA to dry the board. You could catch the IPA and reuse it.
I soak my boards with ipa after the ultra sonic cleaner. Makes it dry really fast and I can test about 5 mins after. Plus having the ultra sonic cleaner going heats it up faster. So you don’t have to let it heat all the way up. Once it’s close to your desired temperature, you can start it and it’ll reach the temperature while it’s going.
Joey, I think for things like the Xbox (and laptops, etc) you may want to spend some time to learn the basic theory of operation, or at least the process under which they start up. As an example, some models of Xbox will beep on and power straight off if certain things don't happen, like the fan not drawing current (dead or unplugged). Knowing the process that the machine follows when you power it up is very important. It's like when you are working on a switch. You know which power draws are which, and you can speed a diagnosis based on those things. Knowing what point a machine suddenly turns off is quite important in the overall process of making it right.
I recently started to do repairs, I thought I'd keep it simple and start with controllers. The very first thing I learned was people are gross and finger cheese is definitely a super grim part of the job.
Hey Joey, i've got a question. My switch broke down, now im looking for a new one. All i need is the Tablet. I'm watching your vids since a while now and i would love to purchase one from you. Only problem is i live in Germany :( I sadly can't shop in your ebay store. Is there any possibility to purchase one from you? Greetings from Germany
I'm disappointed that the Switch Lite can't be fixed. Maybe the PMIC isn't running. Repairing this pattern is difficult, we hope you succeed. May be the 3V regulator isn't working?
Haha, the people that are winning out of all of this are the couriers! As they get money for delivering the item originally and then get money again when Joey fixes the item (or sells it for a loss) and sells it on!
I started my repair career with a Nokia 3310 a drunk gal had puked in and let it sit for months.. and i just cleaned the board and it with hot water. alcohol and aircompressor and all good..then the iphone 3 came and i repaired more of them toilette drop phones than i can count in my head, and Xboxes and ps2 ,and yeah tons of laptop's ..on again with xbox s/x repairs just now..ps get an small aircompressor with condense/water filter ,it blows it dead dry under the chips
Yup, same issue here. Checked on two different screens and even tweaked settings on my main, but still very hard to see. Probably video compression also an issue here. Maybe Joey can change to a slightly lighter shade of red?
We're not off to a good start for season 2. That's ok. Get the bad luck out of the way early...things will improve next episode. I have faith. I would've tried some reflows just out of curiosity but as you said not worth your time. My time however....
I'd keep the nice chassis & packaging from the xbox and sell the innards in a donor chassis. Next time you fix an xbox, you'll be able to sell it looking pretty and hopefully make a little extra profit
Well the switch that sold arrived to me fine and is now wrapped up for my sons Christmas present

We used to heat up our bathing water with a homemade thing like your description....
& it works like a charm but little risky...
a 5 quid kettle would do the job quite nicely.

21:53 The rust was not in the before-shot, so it only appeared in or after the ultrasonic cleaner (I guess after, while drying)

Some people are just careless and don't care about being clean.
Just watch any Hoarder episode and you'll have an idea of their home environment, or at least a worst-case-scenario.

That "finger cheese" reminds me of my days repairing mobile phones in a rural area of Ireland!
Joey that first xbox said it had been dropped. It was most likely just a reball job on cpu and ram.
you can cross reference cells across sheets to save that step of manual labour boss
At 26 minutes exactly, there's a broken trace present on the Nintendo Switch at the bottom left.
What cleaner did you use? It works really good and I want to give it a try in mine!
Normally you'd fill up the ultrasonic cleaner with hot water. But seeing as you need special water thats no option.

Lol, watch 21:28 with subtitles :D
This switch would be good for some Halloween special ^^!
8:07 It's NOT the perfect amount!
It's kinda shitty when people sell things as "no power" when they've tooled around in them
I have crunched the numbers and concluded the removal of your mustache has reduced the likelihood of a successful repair by 0.003%. You are welcome.
Would love to see you try an oled screen upgrade on a Switch lite
My ultrasonic cleaner says to use preheated liquid as the unit itself is only meant to keep the liquid at temp not to heat from room temp.
Nothing like a good water damaged PCB with some tea
That Switch looks like Patient 0 of the Black Plague holy crapoly
As much I love your videos, I gotta say this.... There is no way "too much thermal paste". As long as it's not conductive at least.
The switch looks like someone put their fingers in their ears and rubbed it into the crevices
I. A minute into the video Joey so i dont know the outcome. But i have faith in you. You got this bro.
Isn't the ultrasonic cleaner going to destroy the quartz crystal though?
Horrid bad luck in this episode!
joey , mend it mark has a ultrasonic cleaner and he uses a special cleaner from rs components. worth a look ?
This episode was hilarious
I recently started to do repairs, I thought I'd keep it simple and start with controllers. The very first thing I learned was people are gross and finger cheese is definitely a super grim part of the job.

Always clean sugar liquid with clean water to get better results.
Cheese Louise and Crease Grease!
This season reminds me of the boardgame go for broke
What are the dimensions of the ultrasonic cleaner and how many liters are there? Can a ps5 board fit?
what you mean "enuogh of the stats"? its the best part!
Could you reflow the core Joey?
I just started the videos but wishing you luck on that pesky beep on beep off!
I would love to see you put that disgusting chasis into ultrasonic too..
Use a Kettle to preheat water :)
ebay does not have fees anymore for private sellers? what fee are you paying?
Business fees
That second one... Rough.
keep it up!
Hey joey, my first sticker turned up today 😂 looks like it's been kicking around on the floor somewhere for a while 😅
I'm disappointed that the Switch Lite can't be fixed. Maybe the PMIC isn't running.
Repairing this pattern is difficult, we hope you succeed.
May be the 3V regulator isn't working?
Subscribed.
I know u shouldn't but I used to use ipa in my ultrasonic cleaner
cheese galore jesus christ
Joey, just another reminder about adding the chart!
Might have to rebrand the series to Loss or Loss Season 2 😅
Haha, the people that are winning out of all of this are the couriers! As they get money for delivering the item originally and then get money again when Joey fixes the item (or sells it for a loss) and sells it on!
15:30 looks like ketchup
That switch was vile
You can link one cell from one sheet to another.
I use 40 C and 15 minutes on my ultrasonic cleaner at work @Joey
In England, the ebay seller pays postage and not the buyer?
the seller chooses who pays when making the listing. The idea is that some people are more likely to buy if shipping is free
@@danieldot256usually both from what I've seen. Free if in the same country, not if being sold internationally
I have to say while that switch lite was aboslutely DISGUSTING, your ultra sonic cleaner worked amazing!
Benbibob 😂😂😂😂😂
You should send this to restorish channel to clean up🙈🙈
I started my repair career with a Nokia 3310 a drunk gal had puked in and let it sit for months.. and i just cleaned the board and it with hot water. alcohol and aircompressor and all good..then the iphone 3 came and i repaired more of them toilette drop phones than i can count in my head, and Xboxes and ps2 ,and yeah tons of laptop's ..on again with xbox s/x repairs just now..ps get an small aircompressor with condense/water filter ,it blows it dead dry under the chips
You know the United States can't buy from your eBay?
Zero pounds shouldn't be colored red. Only negatives should be red so you get some positive reinforcement when you start...
Mate that switch can cause another beubonic plague, burn it at 1500'C at 200% airflow
Numbers on red background are almost invisible, or my monitor sucks
Yup, same issue here. Checked on two different screens and even tweaked settings on my main, but still very hard to see. Probably video compression also an issue here. Maybe Joey can change to a slightly lighter shade of red?
I know you warned us but cheesy Wotsits were not a good choice whilst watching this :)
Yum finger cheese
"Even though I walk through the shadow of the valley of death..."
Joey 1 in 10 means 1 part x and 9 parts Y. And use a jug it's not that difficult
Sorry joey u brought a right load of junk there. Great to see u got ultrasonic cleaner though
Fingers crossed u get a few profits in the next ep
Learn pivot tables. It’ll be the best 30 minutes of your life. Keep everything in one table and then use pivot tables to do all your working out.
With the xbox I had one with a DRMOS short, hard to find but might be the issue if you can pin it down
man is hard follow, im from italy so is hard to me.. i think if you talk a bit slowly is better.. anyway amazing work.. i subbed
that was disgustingggggggggg
Not sure if you know but eBay fees been removed
So no need to incorporate 10/12% anymore (inc fees) 0:20
I’m a business so I still have fees.
Ultrasonic ahoy! on this one eh
We're not off to a good start for season 2. That's ok. Get the bad luck out of the way early...things will improve next episode. I have faith. I would've tried some reflows just out of curiosity but as you said not worth your time. My time however....

Bro that finger cheese
No more switches 😅
dis-gus-ting
just use water, the ionized stuff, not useful, dont waste money on that
Seriously? Right in front of my sandwich.
