  • Our children are unfortunately being born into a toxic food environment. Currently, a third of American kids are overweight or obese and in addition to rising rates of childhood obesity, we are also seeing a significant increase in type 2 diabetes in children. Overweight children not only face unfair stigma and judgment, but they are also more prone to battling weight issues in adulthood. Yet, food manufacturers continue to produce and peddle junk to our children that we loosely call food. The good news is that you have control over what foods you bring into your home and the type of modeling you provide for your children when it comes to what to eat.⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to combating childhood obesity and they share patient cases they have treated related to childhood obesity. ⁣

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.⁣

Dr. Hyman, please let her complete her thoughts. As a viewer this is extremely frustrating. Your interviewing or co-hosting etiquette comes across rude and disrespectful. And we as listeners become frustrated.

I love this conversation but please go further than the basic “eat healthier” “America has bad habits”. One of my daughters is struggling with her weight & we can’t figure out why. We are far from perfect but we work hard to eat organic, healthy meals (chicken or meat, fresh cooked & raw veggies, & raw fruits) as a family every night, we pack lunches for school, & we very rarely drink anything other than water. She plays 2 sports at school & we try to get in bed by 8:30-9. It’s nearly impossible to do everything you say but we are doing it. (This mama is exhausted!) I know you can’t possibly know what’s wrong with our child without looking at her but she is not alone in this. There are a good amount of children her size in her class. Our pediatrician keeps telling us she is too big & needs to lose weight but we can’t figure out what is going on. We just ruled out Cushings. I know we aren’t the only ones struggling with this. Our two other children are extremely fit. We don’t want to go on meds but this is so frustrating. Any advice? This is a topic that we need to look into. Thank you for the trailblazing work you’ve been doing. I’ve seen a few documentaries that you are in & you are part of the reason I changed our family’s eating habits many years ago.

We should stop fat shaming people and kids and instead invest all our energy into providing healthier choices for our kids. Losing weight shouldn't be the primary goal, as with weight loss, a lot depends on the state of mind. Losing weight comes naturally when you stop eating junk and have an individualized diet for your body, your environment, your age and body shape.

Anyone who struggles with obesity knows hard hard it is to keep their kids away from junk. They are given junk at schools every day. People are always making sweet treats for every event or activity. It’s crazy navigating that as a parent who knows it is likely that their kids will struggle with the same issues we did.

I agree with healthy food but obese kids are still going to eat more quantity. They are hungrier.

That is so true! The sad part is kids are the worst offenders as far a shaming bullying….. I feel so bad for my grandson is very overweight the frustrating part is not having the junk around and he won’t touch a fruit or veggie…. If it looks even slightly healthy he will not eat it. I’m very concerned for his health he is at least 70lbs overweight and only 10yrs old

Honestly, the food industry and all its subsidiaries are the root of the entire problem. While everyone gets more fat and unhealthy and dies from diet related issues. Big corporate personnel are getting richer and healthier because they are spending your money on healthy foods and vacations laughing through our misery.
    Thats the truth!

Is the nutritional guidelines which brainwashed people into avoiding butter, lard, meat, eggs, whole milk, fatty red meat. The nutritional guidelines falsely claimed saturated fats caused heart attacks. This led to massive increase in margarine, trans fats (now banned!) and vegetable oils - all of which ironically and criminally increase the risk of heart attacks.

Dr. Hyman. Could you please let your guest speak instead of you dominating the conversation? O if you invite a guest, it’s because of their expertise, so please let them share their knowledge instead of you trying to show off your knowledge - as amazing as it is - thank you for the great information, just please allow the guests to really import the knowledge for which you invited them to begin with. Thank you.

Really American business, 📺 shows, American influences like fastest accessible food, no need to cook types of food, I mean processed food, we never had in India when I was growing up. We had Fibre n grain rich food with natural protein, non refined oils, which were wood pressed, non polished grains n lentils. But 25 yours before our country became an American market, which fed a lot of lies into the young population.

I used to be an English teacher in Japan and ate the school lunch for 5 years. Yes their school lunch is healthy. But they DO have Happy Meals and all the other things you said they "don't" have lol.

The American school lunch seems horryfying. :( We're lucky to have tasty and healthy school lunches in Finland. Please send your minister over here for an excursion, American children deserve real food (and only real food) in school. PS. Mark, let Elizabeth talk a bit more. :)

I dislike the emphasis on the pregnancy. It’s like it’s assumed pregnant moms who are obese are eating fast food or something.

    • @alr293

I’d take a greater chance that the mom’s hormones affect her eating during pregnancy which in turn affect the children. My kids won’t eat the food I eat.
