  • How I made a Twisted Stool / End table from a solid piece of ash. Firstly I would like to thank GRAFF for sending me some of their speed cutters to try. Please SUBSCRIBE and hit the bell icon to be informed when I upload a new video. The blade fits into an angle grinder and while I used it mainly for shaping and grinding it can also be used for engraving, grooving, straight and cross-cutting any type of wood. Check out their web page here: speedcuttergraf... or like and follow them on Facebook here: / speedcuttergraff
    There were quite a few cracks in the wood after cutting and shaping which I dont mind but I tried to have a go filling them with a colored epoxy. This was my first time doing this and I ran into a few problems. I didn't realise at the time but the epoxy I used first (seen in the video) takes 3 days to cure! This created two problems . 1, It kept soaking into the wood and I had to keep refilling it. 2, because of the shape of the piece I could only do one side at a time and having to wait 3 days for each it would have taken a long time to do it all so I decided to try some 5 minute epoxy. It worked OK but you will not get all the air bubbles out of the epoxy. If doing it again I would maybe try and get 90 min epoxy which give you more time to play with it and a better chance of removing the bubbles by passing some heat over it. Also I think I would try a different colour and maybe some luminous pigments.
    After sanding I finished it with 3 coats of a water based satin varnish and it didn't have any problems adhering to the epoxy.
    Thanks for watching!!

    I have a beautiful slice of tabletop made by my father and I 40 years ago from our visit to the California Redwoods. We had a base for it until I moved to the UK for 6 months (30 yrs ago) - kept the top but too expensive to ship the tree trunk base. Ever since I have been looking for a suitable base and having found something similar to your table that design will work perfectly. Sadly the example I found was too high as the top is quite thick and cutting the top and bottom shorter would not work. Anyway, I can cut them to the height I need ! YAY THANK YOU 🥰🥰🥰

    I was going to buy one of these twisted wood stools for the house bus I'm creating (as a coffee table), and instead of spending $300 on that I thought I could just buy a chainsaw and plane and do it myself, because afterwards I have a stool and $300 bucks or more of tools I needed anyway. So which tools would you recommend? As this is my first chainsaw I'm interested to know. Also do you have to be careful with the angles etc, when using the chainsaw to protect it the chain from getting damaged or breaking? Thanks! I appreciate your help with this, and your project is beautiful! A real inspiration.

    • @EamonWalshDIY
      @EamonWalshDIY  5 лет назад

      Hi thank you very much.
      Re the tools, for me it all depends on the amount of use it will get. If its something I will rarely use I will not spend too much and if I will be using a lot I will always spend a bit more. The chain saw in the video is a Husqvarna which would be of good quality but there would be much cheaper brands available. The planer was a Makita heavy duty one but again smaller cheaper ones are available. The 125 mm angle grinder was the most used tool in this project. I used a GRAFF speedcutter disc (to shape) flap disc (to fine tune) and sanding disc to smooth all on the grinder.
      I had no problems while using the chainsaw just be sure that everything secured firmly in place and take a little material off at a time and be sure to ware proper safety equipment.

      Hi Daniel, I cannot remember the name of the epoxy you see in the video but I did switch to gorilla 5 minute epoxy as the other was taking too long to cure. You have to work very fast with it though or do it in small batches.
      For the finish on the wood I used a water based satin varnish (3 coats)
