    Very compelling and well thought out. As a Lokean myself I see a lot of pagans (and especially what I would call "fundamentalist" heathens) that try to paint that black/white, good/evil dichotomy on Loki, Jormungandr and other liminal beings, and I knew from my experience how far that thinking is from hitting the mark, but never had the words to explain. Ironically, as a former christian, I had the same blind spot towards members of the pagan community that identified themselves has Luciferian or Satanists - you've given me new insights into my own gods, as well as the twightlight gods of other frameworks. Thank you!

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +22

      Yes Dualism is indeed a problem deeply rooted in our collective consciousness, and when we come from Dualistic religious backgrounds we have the tendency to bring that line of thought into pagan spiritualities and religions.

    • @jackjohnson2309
      @jackjohnson2309 4 года назад +4

      Nocturne Red yea and no. I’m Luciferian, and Heathen, and many other things. Some Satanists and Luciferians also follow pagan paths, some don’t. Depends on the individual’s interpretation of various ideas and ideals.

    • @nocturnered281
      @nocturnered281 4 года назад +2

      @@jackjohnson2309 i heard about different "churches" of satanists and luciferians, but isnt they work with character from avraamic religion, so in my eyes its cant be together. Im myself not satanist nor heathen at that moment, just want to know more about alternatives

    • @jackjohnson2309
      @jackjohnson2309 4 года назад +5

      Nocturne Red again, that would depend greatly upon the individual. Most Luciferians don’t “worship” Lucifer, or even view the Christian model of Lucifer as “real”. Lucifer is used more as a symbol of enlightenment, and freedom, similar to Prometheus in Greek mythology. Lucifer is essentially symbolic of the pinnacle of what man can be, very closely tied to the ideas of gnosis and apotheosis, or enlightenment in general. Satan is a bit different. Many are “atheistic Satanists”, who similarly don’t actually believe in the literal entity of Satan, but rather as a symbol of adversarial might, human carnal nature, etc. and those philosophies are perfectly compatible with most pagan traditions.
      There are, however, “theistic” Satanists and Luciferians who literally worship those figures in one way or another, and view them in more or less the same way as Christians would, as literal deities who represent “The Devil” of Christian mythology. These folks aren’t likely going to be pagan in addition to Satanist or Luciferian.

Insistence on a dualistic perspective is very limited. We are. That's it. We're a discrete part of a massive integrated system. Denying undesirable traits leaves our weaknesses out of sight. And huge respect to you for sharing this and daring to talk about it 👍
    When I have to explain my faith myself, I only say Asatru as it can be difficult enough to explain to the person 😊 but I would like to be able to be completely honest with people. When I say that Loki is one of the gods I understand, what you are talking about happens. Then people tell me that he is evil and a cheater. And I get scared and say "no, he's not mean to me" and here people shut down completely. So get to make them happy I say "Thor is also one of the gods I invite to my blót"
    But then it comes. Blót is also a "bad" thing in today's perception?
    But yes, 1000 thanks for making your videos I feel we practice religion / faith / living a way ,a lot alike 🍀

    In polytheists/panetheist religions, there isn't any supreme deity. It's cos these religions were destroyed in the West, this concept crept in. Normally, anyone can have his OWN main deity, whom he'll place at the top. For him, this deity is absolute. But it's ONLY for him.
    Here in India, probably the only surviving ancient civilisations, there are countless different sects each having a high deity of it's own. Maybe that deity has no real significance in the myth, but for that sect, s/he is everything.
    The reason is simple: we are as individuals very different. Some maybe very loving and kind, some wrathful, some artistic, some introverted, some extroverted and so on. Each is supposed to choose an archetype deity (forces of nature, thought form, energy) based on his or her character trait. In fact the person doesn't even have to choose most of the time. Somehow the he'll get introduced to the deity if he's seeking honestly. This is why it's often said "the gods choose the seeker".
    Now the problem with monotheism, or a system that puts one deity on top, is that if a person doesn't really find THAT specific deity attractive, he will just ignore the entire system. Or he'll just have a superficial devotion which is mostly out of fear.
    Cos of Islamic and christian invasions this has crept into Indian general consciousness too. Unconsciously they're practicing these faiths. Only a few serious seeker truly understand.

    You have perhaps afforded the best interpritation and explanation of chaos and the perception of evil being necessary in keeping the balance, while observing that said chaos is not always an evil. Excellent comparison of other pre-Christian religions and traditions being manipulated to follow a common monotheistic theme that is repeated often in the Neo-Religions/Paths/Systems. You are definitely on the next level while others are playing the same tune, just with different instruments. I am thankful that I have found your channel and look forward to your future uploads.

    I have been rökkatru all my life without knowning. This wonderful video of yourself reminded me of Rilke: “my god is dark - like woven texture flowing - a hundred drinking roots, all intertwined; I only know that from his warmth I’m growing, more I know not: my roots lie hidden deep, my branches only are swayed by the wind”.

  • @OmasHouse5976
    @OmasHouse5976 2 года назад

    I became Asatru a couple years back but feel it's more animistic in my mind. So I wasn't afraid of the 'dark' gods. I feel a deep connection to Angrboda due to feeling mysel a 'mother of destruction' as I dealt with a lot that I don't want to go into here. But also, Loki too seems a side of me I could connect to as you try and do right, feel the injustice, TAKE a moment to have a fit at injustice and all goes wrong...And then his desire to fix. Your explanation also touches me where you think in terms of accepting chaos as a necessary balance of all that is in nature, our planet, our lives...our universe. So true. I love your sharing, thank you so much.
    I recently became a patron on patreon, because I love your work. I'm pagan and atheist, but do not feel tied to blend or tie into just one. I see the gods and goddesses as aspects of us and use them and their storeis to self-heal. I'm definitely into earth based spirituality, as seen in atheo-pagan mindset. But I also believe that rituals and religious ceremonies are a ncessary part of ourselves and will speak to the gods as IF they are real/even if I don't believe it. It's an acknowledgement of the need of our minds to connect with each other through ritual and spirituality (even if spirituality means accepting the essence of all that is) in my mind.

    Well done !! Wonderful videos, much appreciated ! There are certainly verre pervasive influences from the dominant philosophical and religious traditions of the modern day. I have seen this in, especially American Asatru.. I no longer refer to my practise as "Asatru".. just the old ways. Religion, is only one aspect of our ideas about reality, the world, universe, how we should conduct ourselves, how we should live. Much of the old ways are, have been with us.. as an expression of our true nature, never minding what religions are in the high seat. The old ways to me start with my parents, and the threads continue to go back from there, eventually arriving at the Viking times, and , long before. ALU **

      @@ArithHärger I know right, as a matter of fact I was shocked that you referred in Prometheus for I just finished school this year and the ancient Greek we were taught this year contained that story given to us by Plato in Politea.
      Prometheus is a beautiful character but he wasn't only punished by Zeus for stealing but as well as for stealing to protect his brother Epimetheus who is to blame for the lack of weapons of human nature. So it was really something that triggered me into thinking about the complicity of a matter and the variety of perspectives around that matter. As always we need to know the story from more than one side to judge.
      As for Satanism I also came across a greek forum discussing the chance of Lucifer taking the fall to bring balance to the new created world, not because he was punished but because as the first and brightest angel and also as the teacher of the rest he had to let his students teach love and light. Therefore he was set to do the hard work as to try to test mortals into going outside the righteous path which is linked to god and the angels.
      All in all, it was a very triggering video for me, I sat there thinking all night about my path and it proved to be very helpful. Thanks a lot.

    I'm so glad you said that.
    Sometimes its rather terrifying what other people see norse paganism through the lense of christianity without real understanding. Its terrifying because that lense steal ummm a lot of peace from them, it start those small "christian wars" within pagan society. Which I found wrong and sad. Its not the way it should be (in my opinion)

    Thank you for the card that I received today on my return from work. When I saw it and read your greetings it made me fell a very blessed man to have such a good friend.

      Yes! You received my card! I was afraid it would be lost in the way. Can't trust Portuguese post offices :/ You are right, there must be something related to the ancestors. Sometimes in my videos I give hints of that because the cult of the ancestors is scattered and in archaeological findings we don't have much. We have the Dísablót and Alfablót, private/domestic cults of Frigg etc. but it would be an interesting idea trying to pick these little scattered pieces and form a video. I'll try.

      THank you! Oh yes that would be an interesting subject to talk about. Sometimes I speak about certain germanic tribes as you will see in my upcoming videos. I do find the germanic sources very important for a variety of reasons, one of which is the fact that the germanic cults spread to Scandinavia and changed the entire religious background and brought new gods. Continental Germanic paganism in many aspects is the roots of Norse paganism.

    Outstanding!
    I do not agree 100% with every detail here. Though I highly agree with the direction in general.
    I would not go to the extent of separating the 2 concepts, Asatru and Rokkatru. Though I understand why you have. The way I look at it is Asatru as a religion is the introductory path to return to the deeper pagan traditions, ideas and so on. Many people will just stop at this 1st level. But some will seek more, ask questions and delve deeper, as clearly you have. Such is also my way. And I feel the "name" or "lable" we use is more or less irrelevant. Other than for the purpose of discussion with a pre agreed definition.
    Excellent work. Thank you very much!

      Elizabeth, I first began working with the Norse pantheon when, right before a series of grievous life-changing events, Loki made himself present to me. I, of course having heard bad things about him, was a little bit terrified. I faced up though, did a lot of research and asked him to make himself known, and I asked why he was reaching out to me. He did make himself known to me in a few ways, one being a dream where I saw him as both an adult and as a small child. He honestly came to me right when he knew I'd need my faith the most. He is a tough-love deity yes, but he is also amazing. He is funny, he uses humor and lightheartedness to teach you at times. He is a prankster that will watch you trip over you own foot if it means you learn something. He gives me the silent treatment at times because he knows I hate that. But he is loving, caring, ultimately stands beside you. He doesn't give direct lesson as much as he likes you to more or less "figure things out", he loves and protects children, outcasts, he shines his light on the darkness that consumes people. He forces change, because it is needed. Do not be afraid of him, he is often far from reckless. There is much to be learned from him and his kin. And if you have any question about him and/or his family I'll happily answer what I can!!

      @@chrisinreallife2022 I agree with this sentiment, Loki has helped me make immense improvements to myself and my life, sometimes he injects a little chaos into your life and watch stumble and fall but he also expects you to be strong enough to get back up and pull yourself together and in the end you're better off with that lesson the chaos was able to teach you and it makes you a much stronger person, you sometimes have to suffer a little to reach your full potential, nothing worthwhile in life is ever easy, if you're not strong and able to endure and learn from the chaotic aspects of the world you're doomed to fail in the end and you will probably end up getting destroyed by the chaos instead of working with it and using it as means to improve yourself, chaos is not bad and order is not good, it's all a balance, too much chaos and you fall and stumble over everything and can't hold anything together, too much order and you stagnate and rot begins to set in spiritually and mentally and you become like a robot, a slave to certain rigid ideas that has become stuck, then you need a little chaos to bring back the balance and Loki is great for that, he's probably the best life teacher i've had, yes he's tough and unforgiving at times but when you show your strength and get back up he will be ready for you with open arms because he is also very loving to those willing to greater lengths to become better and to learn.

      I am coming to a conclusion lately that Loki might be more apart of my life than ive realized. Although ive been very spiritual and pagan naturally since birth. Spending mostly my entire childhood outdoors, hearing my name blowing in the wind, pretending i was a wizard that commanded nature and such, but only now at age 40 decided to go down my ancestors path being almost entirely from germanic Scandinavian roots. Needless to say ive been on this "path" now for 2 months now and my life has totally changed in certain ways. But back to point with Loki, at work the other day i was like a dog chasing his own tail for 2 hr almost to point of panic until i had a realization. After that situation was normal then came the next realization, i called out to Loki and he responded back with a giggle.

    Thank you for this presentation and sharing of your thoughts, Arity Harger. You are "growing on me". You are stimulating me. I am grateful for this, because it helps me to feel More Alive. Thank You.
    While listening to you and admiring the smooth flow and surety of your speak, a thought came to me that: In the biggest sense of Order, that I can imagine, there would be included Growth Of Individuals (Toward more Spiritual Things Being The Best They Can Be) and this Order is provident, productive and protective of this Evolution. Supportive of More and Better. More and Better Goodness...with a resultant reduction in "badness".
    I believe that "Lucifer" advocated total freedom of Individuals (and societies?) that undermines and eventually disrupts certain levels of Order... before this is Earned. I also believe that the "Highest Level Of Order" is beyond any damage caused by the practices and expressions of premature total freedom...the freedom that cares not about consequences. This "Highest Level Of Order", long in being developed by CREATOR and with much trial and error, finally became just about PERFECT and became the Source Pattern by which all "Lesser Realms Of Order" are compared. I believe that there is no "chaos" in the Highest Level Of Order", except maybe a token example, well contained and kept, to remind this Highest Order of the Reason for It to be in the first place.
    "Total Freedom" eventually is Earned, from which some level of Godhood does begin.
    Yes. I do fear chaos. It seems too close to mindlessness and heartlessness and nothingness. What Good is that? "Good For Nothing".

    I find it interesting that you say there is no duality in Norse mythology. I know why you say there is no "good" or "evil" but I find that there is polarity everywhere in Nordic spirituality. Even their primal elements are polarized pairs, fire and ice, wave and wind. Conflicting wills which have some similarities and some differences, wills that are almost diametrically opposed not in the sense of good or evil but in the sense of the rise and fall or summer and winter. Please note that this is posed as a question or at most an alternative perspective, and *not* an argument, and also that if you addressed this point in another video I simply haven't watched it yet.
