    I find Freyja a most powerful, unusually proud goddess. I guess astrologically she relates to Venus, rather than to the Moon, as Venus is the proudest. She does not take second place to any male God, and she demands a true show of deference before she will appear to the querent. Thank you for your wisdom-soaked additions to the Nordic teachings. It is a great time to be alive.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +55

      That point right there you said is the key! "She does not take second place to any male God" I agreed. She is often depicted even my academics (and I get a lot of discussions with my collegues) as being second only to Odin. I think it's time to stop these social and gender boundaries. Each deity is important in its own field of expertise just like us. No one is second to anybody. No one should be treated as inferior We are all different and special in our own ways.

    • @fixedcross
      @fixedcross 6 лет назад +11

      Thanks for your reply! Yes these particular gender roles were invented by the Christians and imposed on the nordic realms which were more respectful of the differentiated, pluriform nature of the world. A very notable difference between the Christian patriarchal god and Odin is that the latter is mortal. Odin doesn't master the universe, neither does he master Freyja - but he does master himself, which is the example he sets for us.

    • @fixedcross

      Maybe actually Odin strives for not mastering himself. To go beyond himself.

    The issue I take with calling these women prostitutes is that in the modern age our view of sex has changed so drastically and the role of a prostitute has changed with it. It's not enough to say "our ancestors didn't believe prostitution was bad" but rather that many (if not all) prostitutes took on a role similar to that of a priestess and used sex as their method of channeling the divinity of Freyja. Hardly some woman on a street corner offering to suck you off for a fiver.
    As sex started to be viewed as sinful and profane, so did prostitutes. It became a purely carnal profession.

    • @jordasn
      @jordasn 3 года назад

      id argue that its not necessarily the role of prostitutes that changed, but how prostitutes are treated and how their public image has warped into the "woman on a street corner offering to suck you off for a fiver" instead of a woman with a profession that many people relied on for sexual and romantic aid and guidance

      @@ergoproxy7444 I know this is an old comment, and this isn't directly related, but I kind of relate it to how Levayan Satanists took the word Satan; originally, it was almost a slur, aimed toward people the Ancient Christians and Hebrews deemed evil, or corrupt, didn't matter what that person actually believed, simply meaning "enemy". There came a point where people decided, "If this is what you want to call people who do not submit to you, then we shall take that title gladly."

Just after the end of the Viking raids, and with plenty of traders and migrants left from those times. The original name of the island was Gyr' Island anglophized to Jersey. Gyr being a Norse name probably pronounced "Gear". I love the Old Gods, and this rich tradition. I, like every other God, elf, and human, am crazy about Freya, and I think me and Odin would be great friends and traveling companions. Never a dull moment with these guys.

    Also interesting that it’s known practice (example in Egypt with Lotus flowers) among seers and certain levels of spiritual mastery to involve sex for similar reasons. Hence the new age of such loose ends or sleeping around, people will do well to learn what happens when they share their bodies with others, much deeper than quantum entanglements 🙏🏼

    Dear Arith, did you ever heard of the germanic goddes Holle/Holda/Percht? She leads together with Wotan/Odin the wild hunt. She look after the souls of unborn children. She is a goddes of fertility, birth, death, like a combination of Freya, Frigg and Hel. Even her name sounds similar to Hel, but she is also very closely connect to birth and fertility. So she might be "the Lady"/Freia ( in Germany Freia is the name for Frigg, Freya is not really lokated in Germany). So this fits perfectly with your theorie. Maybe you would like to check. It is very interesting in this context.

    Happy Arith'sday as for many of us Wednesday is the day of Arith, when we get to see the new video.
    Maybe the christians could have associated Freya with Mary Magdalene, who appears in the stories of Jesus but her role is clouded because of the treatment of women in that society. More recent discoveries of books left out of the bible suggest that she had a more important role than is recognised in the accepted scriptures.

      Happy Arith's Day to you too my friend hehe :P Yes, the female characters of the bible don't have much protagonism, aside from the Virgin Mary for being the "vessel" who carried god's son, the saviour. The rest of the women in the bible are either prostitutes or demons. I will speak a bit about Mary Magdalene on another video during June, funny you should mentioned her, I've actually recorded a video a month ago talking about her. There are great evidences already, new ones, that she was a very wealthy woman and she was in fact financing the entire Jesus' religious campaign, whether he was real or not, whoever was behind that religious burst against the romans, she was financing. She clearly had more power, but christianity as usual turned her into a prostitute.... such a lack of imagination :/

    May I suggest another possibility? Perhaps there are many similarities between Frigg and Freyja because Frigg was Freyja's mother. Consider that Frigg is also called Jord. Jord is also a name for Nerthus, often cited as perhaps the twin sister-wife of Njord and their names are related. In the hostage exchange after the Aesir-Vanir truce, only Njord and Freyr were considered hostages, yet Freyja comes, too. That seems logical, due to the closeness of Freyr and Freyja to the point of the twin sister-wife relationship. It is said that Njord also was a twin, and his twin sister was his wife. It seems logical that his twin sister would want to go with him, as well. Moving to Asgard, where the sister-wife relationship was outlawed, Freyja cannot be with Freyr and thus marries Odr (not Odhinn) or maybe was already married to him when they came. Freyr later finds Gerdr. Njord must also separate from his sister-wife, Frigg/Jord/Nerthus. Frigg is a queen in her own right, so who better to marry than Odhinn. And it serves Odhinn, as well, in that she would have the knowledge of seidr, she is a prophetess/seeress, she has the knowledge of the norns, she is a shapeshifter, and she is skilled in the arts of negotiation (as she always seems to win any debate with Odhinn ;) ), and is called to help in matters of international relations. That may also explain the close relationship between Freyja and Thor. They seem to have a very good, trusting relationship, and in this case, perhaps older half-sister/little half-brother, sharing the same mother. Which is why Loki, wanting to use Freyja's falcon cloak, gets Thor to ask for it. ;) And perhaps why Thor seems to step up to be Freyja's protector, or think that he can speak up about marrying her off in order to get his hammer back. lol There is a whisper of a hint to the relationship between Frigg and Njord in the Lokasenna. Maybe. lol Freyja is also a mother, though depicted more as the independent mother who no longer has to watch over little ones but is freer to do more in life, though she would use her powers/magick at a moment's notice to protect her children. Both Freyja and Frigg were invoked together in prayers during childbirth. And Frigg is no Virgin Mary. (Was Mary? lol) When Odhinn was away in exile, she lived with his brothers - closely. ;) Njord speaks up for Freyja when accusations from Loki cast aspersions upon her sexual activities, saying that it was not a bad thing to have relationships with others, and nobody contradicted him. It was not prostitution or "whoring," as we have been conditioned to think of today. It was just . . . whatever. lol
    Just another theory. ;)

    amazing video, I agree about the correlation between Freyja and Virgin mary, both were called bad names, and given bad adjectives. Especially when Mary got pregnant without (a father), and went to the top of a mountain (spiritual mountain) and been protected by (angels). that place was called Bayt-lam, which refers to Lam = lamb of good, the aries zodiac sign, in arabic it is Hamal, means pregnancy and giving birth. so it is Bayt-lam. Bayt = home or house, so it all makes sense in a way. thank you again.

    I mean, a lot of pantheistic religions have incestuous relationships between the gods. I don't think it really implies that the societies themselves practiced incest; it's probably more something like, when we're talking about the early deities in the pantheon, they're all related, so they don't have any options.

    Great video! Growing up Catholic the only positive female association I ever encountered was of the Virgin Mother/Lady of Perpetual Sorrow, not quite realistic in modern times....or any time for that matter. The only "good" female entity was always sad and sorrowful and was never give any real power or purpose other than self sacrifice and subservient service. My question is, since Christianity made any woman who was not sorrowful or subservient into a demon (like Lillith) or into a prostitute doesn't Freyja seem more on par with the Mary Magdalene? Being that Freyja is noble, sexual and the wife of a leader which alines with the dual versions of Mary Magdalene where she was born of noble blood, a prostitute, and as some believe not a prostitute but the actual wife of Jesus who himself was seen as a leader amongst his people?

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +4

      In medieval times Mary Magdalene didn't have much importance yet because people all over Europe were struggling, not only religious conflicts between Protestants and Catholics, but some believed Jesus was a mortal messiah son of God, while others believed he was god himself come to earth in human form. Either way, Jesus having a female figure too close to him other than his own mother, was something inconceivable. Mary Magdalene was turned into a prostitute and so did all women with the exception of the Virgin Mary because she was the mother of Jesus and the woman God chose, so it would have been impossible to turn her into a prostitute, or it would have been highly offencive and immediately condemned. It's true Freyja was seen as a prostitute by Christians but in order to convert the pagans, she had to be closer the only important female figure in christianity. But here's where it gets tricky. The Vikings divided the same goddess in two (Freyja and Frigg) so with christianity Freyja started to lose power and her other version (Frigg) started to gain more power because that aspect of the same goddess was closer to the Figure of the Virgin, a household goddess, queen of Asgard, Wife of the king of the gods etc. Freyja's cult started to deminish and her aspect as Frigg started to become much closer to the Virgin Mary.

    This was a very useful and informative video and I love it. But I have to ask, when did the story of her being married to a dwarf who wooed her with his beautiful crafts come into popularity? It doesn’t seem to have any basis in myth but in many modern fantasy novels and stories Freyja is married to a dwarf. To me this change sounds like someone applying a Greek myth to a Norse one to make the story more familiar, but I’ve got no idea where it comes from. It’s in video games, kids books, comics, and even an opera. Do you know where this comes from?

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +4

      Ah good question! I also grew up with that story, Freyja had sex with 4 dwarves in exchange for a necklace. This is a very short story in Óláfs saga Tryggvasonar found in the Flateyjarbók, which, if I'm not mistaken, can be read in the Heimskringla but as an extended version. It's a 14th century Icelandic story, which means Catholicism was the official religion in Iceland for at least 300 years. As I've been telling in the videos, Christians created this image of Freyja being a whore to demonise her and her entire cult, to diminish her power and denigrate her image. This short, tiny, insignificant story which would almost pass unnoticed, is actually the most popular "facts" about Freyja, because Christians spread that idea as much as possible, and with the turn of the century during the 16th century, it was even worse when Protestantism took hold in Iceland. There might be a pagan past to this story of course, something related to the fertility of the soils and Freyja's contact with the landspirits, underground spirits represented by Dwarves. The Flateyjarbók is, without a doubt, a great source to study the cult of both Freyr and Freyja, there are loads of hints to their cults, but of course, masked with Christianity, so we have to be careful and try to filter as much as possible.

    Although Loki told Freya she is a whore for sleeping with all of the Gods, she did also deny this, taking this accusation as an insult. Loki was insulting not just her but other Gods at the time as well. Should we just assume tbat Loki wasn't lying? To her character, she also took offense to an order to pretend she was a wife to a God she was not married to, because she did not want others to assume she had relations with him. This concern of hers seems to go in direct contrast with the assumption thst she was simply a loose kind of woman. The Christians would have demonized Freya as a threat, encouraging the idea or rumours that Freya was to be disregarded as an immoral woman. I think Freya is a bit misunderstood.

    Some very good and interesting historical info... But I must correct you on her name...Her name does not mean "lady"... Freyja is the germanic pronunciation of the Indo-European goddess Praa-Jaa which translates as the energy "jaa" of fertility "Praa", Frey is the germanic pronunciation of the indo european male aspect of fertility "Praa". PraaJaa (Freyja) means the feminine power of fertilty.... Very sad to see you once again simply regurgitating modern academic assumptions and superficial understandings...

    I don't understand, why Morality, Purity and Virginity, is always spoken of in Pagan circles as something only related to Christianity, and the idea that Prostitution was related to Paganism, when Ancient Greek, Mesopotamian, Egyptian and I am sure, Norse Religion also DEIFIED Morality, Purity and Virginity... The Christians do not get their idea about Morality and Reverence for Virginity from Abrahamic-Moses Religion, the Christian Reverence for Virginity and Morality comes from Pagan aka Native Greek Religion, which DEIFIED Hygiene, Virtue and Morality... There was no Biblical Jesus ever, he didn't exist, the Religion of the Greeks as so expressed by Apollonius was hijacked by Biblical Judaics in the 400's AD.
    But the idea that "Prostitution" was ok or that Morality, Virginity, and Virtue were not Gods themselves in the Greek, Roman, Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Norse worlds and other Caucasian Civilizations and Nations is quite erroneous.
    One of the major tools to avoid misfortune, Diseases and problems of Evey kind, was to follow the Basic rules for correct thinking and behaving and the cult to the Gods always expresses that methodology.
    All Pan Caucasian Deities have their counterparts in other Caucasian Deities, wether they are from the Mediterranean to Scandinavia, or from the Atlantic Sea to Eurasia.
