  • For the last video of 2022 in this channel I would like to share a few words concerning an animistic perspective in relation to socialization with The Others; seeing all manner of entities as persons of the world, extending our understanding concerning life and personhood, creating respect towards another. Hope you enjoy it and may this be a useful perspective. See you next year.

My dear friends, I had planned to be here for you in these last days of the year, but sadly on the 21st of December (2022) I had the first symptoms of Covid, and there it is, after escaping it for this long the little bugger finally caught up with me. I'm currenly figthing high fevers and I've been hospitalized. Thank you so much for your support, kindness and friendship. Hopefully we shall be together in here for next year. Take care of yourselves. I wish you all the best and may next year bring you new possibilities and wonderful surprises. Stay safe and sound. Farewell!

Oh that's terrible... I use optimal nutrition ($50 a month & I only eat a meal in the evening) with peanut butter & milk. veggie vitamins too & the whole family (6 of them) got it (they don't do the natural health thing).... I seriously think it is truly just hit or miss based on what is built up in our immune systems regularly (wife had it 3 times)... I'm no doctor & prefer natural teas & tone healing for minor pains due to weather (in place of over the counter meds) As always consult your own doc & treat yourself however it best works for you.... Sending you good vibrations friends ✌️❤️🖖✊️. Oh, very well put video 👏, ty... You got this 👊

Great video. I myself have been healing from a respiratory illness the last couple weeks, so I sympathize and hope you are starting to feel better nowadays.
The later discoveries in quantum mechanics have led to a modern version of animism that is being investigated by science, which they call panpsychism. Maybe the ancestors were right! We may be able to save ourselves from self-annihilation by interacting with our environment in a relational way instead of trying to manipulate everything and everyone. Thanks for the reminder.

As someone who also grew up in a (somewhat) violent background, and as a Christian that later renounced it and eventually found Zen Buddhism and Hinduism and Taoism through Alan Watts, after watching this video I find that Animism is probably the closest label I could apply to my personal worldview, along with Taoism, the idea that everything is a Great Organism of sorts. I've been writing poetry and aphorisms about Life for several years now. To me it only makes sense that everything is alive and connected to a universal power. It's not like humans are so particularly special that they are created apart from everything else, even though the strong illusion that we are gives us that impression. I don't often give likes but I like your videos, pleasant to watch.

It's refreshing and brings me hope to see your content when there's so much hateful and pro-fascism content out there related to any type of European pagan practices. I find it funny that all of the twisted dark versions of paganism aren't very animistic; it's harder to promote hate when your worldview is based on interconnectedness and empathy I suppose. As a biologist I believe that our human nature is still evolved to favor living in a small tribal group of 150 people. There is significant differences between ethnic groups in genetics, morphology, physiology and culture evolved in thousands of years.
Ecologically we are designed to be prey for large predators as well we serve as food for microorganisms. Well and I have lived alltogether 1 year with tribal shamans in Nepal. Real understanding can grow only when you grow up as a child in these societies. Personally I loved it, I was chosen to be gifted but I know the differences and limitations. Also I stayed with people in South America and West Africa...

Great description of animism, describing it in a social context, and the relationship between racism and the enlightenment which developed alongside colonialism, slavery, and capitalism.
My personal experience, as an atheist, started with building a social and spiritual connection with elements within my environment through gardening and permaculture. As I began to break down the barriers from environmental alienation and separation, it began to give me a great sense of spiritual belonging and understanding in how I personally affect the environment I live in.

I often hear the notion that animism is a rather primitive, childish or irrational worldview. You are absolutely right to say that the opposite is true. We really need this way of relating to the world and to people in a open receptive manner with respect to the sacredness any creature is genuinely inherent of. It is true that the modern culture is way to proud of it‘s dubious achievements in technology or science. Unfortunately many people are not able to set aside their biases against worldviews that come from spiritual knowledge and wisdom. I also was in that position about 20 years ago, so I know this way of thinking very well. But I always felt that we need to look for a different way of life. I am certain we are heading into that direction and you are straight to the point about the need to listen and talk to one another in making progress finding proper ways of living for ourselves and the world we live in and with.

Excellent series of reflections here, thank you for this. The concept of ''the person'' have been resistant to philosophical definition for many, many centuries. The idea that only humans (adult, male, ''rational'' humans using the ''proper'' language) are fully realised ''persons'' is long-standing and dangerous prejudice of European cultures... from Plato to the 19th century! There have been a few notable historical exceptions such as Saint Francis of Asissi's mysticism (especially the 'Canticle of Brother Sun') but mystics were never far from the risk of incineration. Nietzsche's forray into the idea of other-than-human-life is also a rich resource, also Henri ( and Mina) Bergson. What you say here gives me hope that these somewhat subterranean currents of thought are now re-emerging as serious options for survival and flourishing. the acknowledgement of non-human 'personhood' and communication with the ''outside of the human'' is as you say - a precondiiton for the furtherance of life, not a hipppy-dippy luxury of late capitalism. Thanks again for this material! M.D.P.

I really like the video so far 15:42 minutes in, but one thing I’m not really understanding is your insistence that animism is highly rational. I’m not saying it isn’t, but it is a struggle to understand as from said western scientific viewpoint, there are no observable aspects or qualities that would qualify a rock or deck I really connect with as “alive”. Therefore, it is considered to be irrational that I think of these things as living. If you can’t get to the point where you’re open to the idea of things other than humans as having a spirit, the jump to animism and wanting to socialize with the other would seem pretty crazy.
I think the root of the problem comes down ultimately to belief. If you do not believe that something is alive or has spirit, then it becomes irrational to treat it as such, and therefor from that persons’ perspective, they will think that others who believe in animism are irrational. It seems so difficult to argue for because belief tends to come from experience/lack of experience. Most people that don’t believe in ghosts are skeptic because they’ve never seen one. Much the same, it’s a bit harsh to expect people to believe in animism when they’ve not experienced conversation with anyone that isn’t human or animal.
I feel like if you could help bridge the gap between that start point western scientific perspective, that would really help understanding your argument on why animism is highly rational. To me, it’s highly rational because it facilitates a lifestyle that is beneficial for us all, humans and non-humans. It’s a antidote to the way we live through exploitation of natural resources and thoughtless consumption. It’s much harder to justify exploitation and overharvesting of natural resources when you see the world as alive, inter-connected and a person. Just like you say, it grows our empathy a lot!
I hope I made sense in this comment and that it wasn’t too harsh or garbled. I really enjoy your work and I don’t disagree, but I’m just very confused and am trying to broaden my horizons. I think I really need to go out there and try to talk to trees of something because I’ve yet to find an experience that 90% solidifies my belief in animism.

Animism and Shamanism seem to be the foundational theological approaches of humanity. Polytheistic populations derived from these and as time passed we evolved away from multiple gods and spirits to embrace a monotheistic worship style. That being said, even in monotheism there is an unconscious mental push to assign different "forces" to different things i.e. the desire to have so many satanic demons all with a different function...ghosts, spirits, angels, even Saints. There is some basic mental need to assign spirits to "things". Now, this is not universal, and the more fundamentalist you are, the less likely you will be to do this, but I feel the majority of "spiritual people" will attempt to make the mental leap. It serves us psychologically to divide and conquer our surroundings by discreet assignation of a higher purpose to the things we can physically interact with. Does this necessarily make us better people? I personally think that humans are born as absolute survivors, which means that personal survival is more important than group survival. Social skills need to be taught. Placing the needs of the many above the needs of the few, is not within human nature, and ergo must be taught. Does an animistic approach help to teach, and by extension, learn these broader social skills? No. I feel it allows us to bond with our natural surroundings, but does little to make us "better" people, since we will bond with our natural surroundings to the detriment of building dyadic social relationships that do nothing to aid in our personal survival. Feeling that all things possess a spirit, does not negate humanities desire to bend the world to our personal needs guaranteeing our personal survival.

wow. i stumbled across this accidentally and want to *thank you* for your thought provoking insights. i’ve always considered myseld an animist but never thought of it from the grander perspectives you've addressed, such as the implications for modern humanity, empathy, and more. i’m going to rewatch this again and check out some of your other videos.
    best,

I definitely have become more charismatic through my animistic capacity (skills that have improved through animism) and which contribute to the atmosphere of a social space. For one I am always being told Of my “healing aura” That I’d like to contribute to my natural reaction and impulse to peoples speech as one of general understanding

I'm listening to at least one of your videos every day as I'm painting a series of women combined with animals . Your words often speak to exactly where I am inside myself . This video especially spoke to me . I grew up in utter chaos and violence . I have been in the process of finding peace and connection . My first deeply healing relationships have been with the natural world and invisible others .
Thank you . Your work is really affirming of my experience.

Animism is much more than a tool to expand our perception of this world! At least to me , it's the basic reality of everything existing! The uni/multiverse (not just this tiny planet) is alive!

I've realized after looking into so many religions so much reading and self reflection that flowing with th people tribe or folk is th ultimate goal. We are made to work together just like every other species on earth. I don't mean socially although that's included I mean from a more macro sense. Just like a predator thins th herd of weak and overpopulation leading to advancement of life lower down th food chain. We also are part of this cycle in nature. If we could let go of our ego and thoughts we could flow with nature just as our instincts are desperately trying to tell us.
