Wow! I am so excited I found your channel. I have been learning so much. I went to the Asian grocery store and bought some yam leaves. I planted them according to your instructions and then cooked the rest with a little garlic. Oh my goodness! They are so delicious! I have a hard time enjoying most cooked greens like kale or collards, but these sweet potato leaves and stems are truly DELICIOUS! I’m excited to try and grow my own so I can eat them more often. Thank you for helping people like me learn to grow and eat more vegetables!
This is a good one for the beginner, I can say. I planted some slips last year, and trained them up on a trellis (so I thought), but now in Spring they're coming up all over the place, maybe fifty feet from where they were planted. While cultivating I keep digging up unexpected sweet potatoes from last year. So not only is it nice to have a continuing little crop of greens, but it's' a good idea to go LOOK at the plants every few days and see what they're up to! I think the instructions on this channel will help us to control the plant, maybe selectively harvesting the parts that are trying to escape. I just ate some ramen that had a hand full of tiny leaves in it. It's kind of a treat to just go outside and get as much as you need at that moment. For a beginner, it's very encouraging!

Your video are very simple and we'll explained. Can you tell me these sweet potato which we get from asian store produce the tubers (sweet potato)? Or it is used only for shoots, foliage and leaves?
You have a very beautiful garden and I admire how you've done most of the work yourself. I just started and planted radishes as my first trial. I hope to have a garden like yours some day.
+Roger Novelo Depends on the varieties. The one that I harvest leaves does not produce considerable tubers but the one that grows stems grow tubers but it takes them long time ( more 3 months) to grow a good size of tubers. I do not have a big garden so I cannot afford to let them take their time to grow tubers.
This was a very interesting and helpful video. I did not know these plants leaves, and stems could be eaten.(I always thought they were poisonous) silly me!!😄 Thank you for sharing this information. Awesome video!
Good info..love sweet potatoes, have nought been able to successfuly get shoots..mabe if I can find a plant already growing I can try growing..do shoots grow roots better in water?..thank you for all you do
george medeiros Thank you George. The people who try to hurt me won't get me at all. I only care about the good people. Ignore it and live happy life! :)
Do you have to plant the slips deep to get a good potato I just laid mine on The Mulch and then covered parts of the Vine with two or three inches of mulch
Thank you for sharing this..I have never try the leaves and stems before, last year I planted sweet potatoe..a lot of leaves but not as productive..only got one very large one and a few smaller ones. If I had know this I would have harvested the leaves instead
+Asiangarden 2table guess all leaves are edible? I have not seen those shoot here in the chinese market (the Netherlands) but I have a lot of sweet potato slips ready to go...different kinds... I hope I will have a bountiful harvest in leaves as in tubers.. I love the firm tubers from Japan...they are sweet, starchy and firm
Thank a lot for your valuable informations about sweet potato. I would like to ask you what are the varieties that you plant for top eating in your place. In Taiwan they have two varieties Tainong 71 and Taoyuan 2 for fresh leaf stir fry.
Shoots, young leaves, old leaves - I eat them all. I am from Malaysia, I have a sweet potato patch too, grow it for leaves, love to eat leaves. Old leaves taste good too when you cook, not tough as people may think, what a waste to not eat old leaves..
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, potato leaf sounds and looks delicious, I'll grow them next year. A question, I planted four beds of soybeans, 4'x4'/bed, when I dug I mixed a lot of Milorganite which basically is nitrogen, of course, I also mixed phosphate. But now they are about 2.5 feet high, have large dark green leaves and less flowers..... The soil PH in Chicago north most likely is 7.1, I put Epson salt, looks like won’t help. What should I do in order to have a good harvest? And does soybean needs pollination or belongs to self-pollinating legume? Thank you.
John Hu Thank you John. Top dress with some Potassium rich fertilizer. It will help fruiting and seed filling. No need to pollinate the flowers. Just wait a little longer the flowers will grow more. Don't worry about the PH. Good luck!
I was going to ask this very question, because I am interested mostly in the yam part. However, we might add shoots to the menu too. I would think that harvest greens frequently would slow or stunt the growth of the potato. Would love to get more info. from you regarding this Regine. Also, wondering which variety is best for this and that. Perhaps another video idea.
No, the drip hose was originally laid out using landscape emitter tubing. www.rainbird.com/homeowner/products/drip/SubsurfaceEmitterTubing.htm We found the flow was not enough, then added the adjustable flow rate emitters into this tube.
Mam I appreciate your explanation. Please make another vedio to know when to harvest sweets patoto. How much time it takes. Can you make vedio on Chinese cooking of sweet potatoes stem and leaves. Namh shivay.
Yes they do. She probably just wanted to emphasize in this video that the leaves are very edible. The varieties that were shown here are popular across Asia. Both their tubers and leaves have wide varieties of use.

How I wish that if can understand all what you said cuz ur accent is difficult for me and I hope u write what are you saying in the video down the video
Yup, she does. She's going to cut it off, bury it in a pot with some dirt and see if it grows roots. If it doesn't, it'll just be tossed into the compost pile along side the old host where she cut the long stem from.

How did the plants go?
Your comment made me smile 🙂

+Roger Novelo
Thank you Roger. Get some more experience you will get a garden like mine soon :) It is not that difficult.
The stems you grew roots to and transplanted... would that yield spuds too or is that done strictly for the leaves?
+Roger Novelo

Yes. If you keep the plant long enough. It will produce sweet potatoes, although it may not be as productive.
