It's hot, it's humid. You've been walking through this jungle for weeks. It never changes, not even at night. You hear birds, or at least you think you do. They sound hollow, rattling, metallic. You've never seen any animals the entire time you've been here, but you can faintly hear the hum of a machine somewhere. It's definitely there, masquerading as the burble of a stream or blow of the wind. No matter where you go, it's always the same volume, same pitch, seemingly everywhere. You swear that, when you lay down and sleep at night, there's something rushing underground. Even the crunch of the leaves under your feet seem to reverberate off of some distant place. You rip off part of a root from a tree. It's metal.
