This video almost has a classic Mythbusters/Bill Nye feel. Between the last Porsche racing history video and this video, there’s a whole lot of knowledge and passion on this channel, which can’t be faked. It’s a “I can’t wait to show you just how cool this thing is” feeling which is positive and interesting. Other car channels can have a cynical, lowest common denominator, bread and circus feel, and this approach has a respect for the viewer’s intelligence that is rare in this space. Great stuff!

I've owned a euro spec (Australia) 5 speed, LSD 928 for 7 years and this is one of the best, most informative 928 videos I've seen in that time. Harry's Garage is the other good one. Can't wait to see more 928 content, especially the aircon system and seat restoration. Tricky things that no-one has really covered yet
Great stuff. I’m jealous. You’ve made me want to get another one. I sold my ‘79, 16 years ago, but the memories still live on. So does the car. It’s bringing joy and a draining bank account to another lucky person in NC.
I'm my humble opinion the best place for a side repeater (indicator / turn signal) is integral with the door mirror. This means that it's higher up and more visible, it means fewer holes in the sheet metal (less corrosion), easier to assemble, more aero, cleaner..... All wins!
Fun fact, many aircraft have spoilers ON their wings (the things on the trailing end of the wingg that pop up upon landing). They're generally called speed brakes.
Dear god I’ve wanted a manual 928 since I was 14. Love to watch this. Edit: holy shit this was a Pascha car. Pascha is the greatest automotive achievement EVER. G@&$@ I’m jealous. Nice.
Exhaust mount on battery box which itself is bolted to the diff sounds very German, still my favorite German engineering is Mercedes W124 4matic - they ran front CV axles through the springs!
Hi, Great video. The battery box being attached to the transaxle is to reduce the unsprung weight of the car. More weight from the battery on the diff means more weight on the wheels, increasing traction.
Basically, they want you to upgrade your Porsche 928 up to a vehicle that will upgrade it to something that will get you up to 170mph. Forget it. You won't spend more than a minute at that speed. Enjoy your terrific 928 handling and suspension settings that will out handle even 911's at 99% of normal driving, and give you wonderful driving experiences in the real world. Unless of course you intend on going racing..... which 99.99% of you will never be doing.
The no side repeater thing is just a US (north America) thing, so those are not just found on Europeans models. Considering some of the other (wacky?) DOT requirements (eg the side facing lights at front & rear), and that the US has a lot of multilane high speed roads, that a side repeater isn't needed. For the rear fog, considered finding a British one (because it'll be on the other side of the number plate) and having 2? The lack of symmetry on the rear of Euro cars where the fog light was seemingly an afterthought upsets my OCD :p
Never understood USA marker lights and no side indicator either. Don’t get me started on the plague that is DRL’s either. I still have nightmares from sorting out the footwell loom on an Australian market 928…
Seems like I read somewhere that they were having a problem with drivetrain vibration so they hung the battery out there to counteract it. Sounds like 11th hour engineering if it's true.
I know so much about a 928 now that I want one! I’ve actually always wanted one same Gen X as you JF now I can maybe go out and get a well sorted one thank you..
Should replace the rear fog light with an LCD screen and a raspberry pi that scrolls "Ficarra Classic" in electric blue...... Replace the vacuum hoses with copper vacuum lines and they'll never leak again, and look super steampunk to boot....
I’m really interested to see what power output an early euro spec has with headers. There’s a lot of conflicting information on that. Do you plan on putting it on a dyno? For reference, I’m currently restoring a ‘79 euro spec. Probably gonna just leave it all original (engine wise), but I am contemplating putting headers on. *Possibly* one day doing the ‘85-‘86 5.0 hybrid swap?
The biggest minor issue that I have always had with US cars is the lack of an amber turn signal at the rear. People touch their brakes on the freeway, and if both rear lights can't be seen, everyone in the other lane hits their brakes just in case they're changing lanes. Such an easy fix just to put an amber lens in.
In the video, the door bar looks like it has an internal tube to reinforce where is was welded in the middle. Is that what it looks like up close? The gap would allow it to squeeze into the door opening, then slide it apart a small amount then weld it?
Being a petroleum distribution technician for a major multi national corporation i had to go serve some drunk biarch halfway through this, No, I forgot to ....pause. My question is, did you mention that it's more aerodynamic going in reverse? Is that even true?
Mr. Ficarra:" i dont know anyone who would back into someone". Also Mr. Ficarra: Whole Audi 5000 debacle. Just a little brow raising moment. Totally disconnected but foreboding.
Despite popular belief, bigger brakes are NOT always better. Is more unsprung weight, that hurts the handling. Most cars come stock with brakes that can lock the wheels, hence the need for ABS systems. Vented perforated brake disks don't add to the braking force, just increase the heat dissipation capability, important for frequent braking at low speed. The 928 was meant to be a GT, so unless one went to the track, it had plenty brakes to cross the Alps and the Pyrenees in safety. The best braking one can have is downshift to a lower gear and let the engine compression slow down the car without wearing the brake system. Those driving automatic, though luck.
@@keithhoughton4308 when you downshift, you don't ride the clutch. When braking, you ride the brakes. I am driving a car for 250 000 km, with the clutch that came in it, god knows how long before, and no problem. Car is a Mercedes-Benz 250d with more than 800000km.
@José Pinto That advice was given to me by the owner of a racing school. It has always stuck with me, even when driving on the road. Also, you don’t need to do much gearchanging on those 250 diesel Mercs. ;-)
@@keithhoughton4308 What José wrote is right, we learn that in driving school in Europe. Where nearly everyone drives manual, and it's a good way to save fuel.
John Ficarra posts, I click. That's just how it is.
Yes.
Yes, but in Australian
Yes but in British with my tea hand.

I love the 928. It's my all time dream car since the early 80's. Although I much prefer any 928 that is original and unmolested. Thank you.

John, you could make a 20 part video series on the 928 & I would watch it all. I love the detail you go into.
Always happy to see a ficarra upload. Could listen to you talk cars for hours.
Kudos John. The 928 was the first Porsche I fell in love with, made me notice Porsche. Of course they were new then. Lol
You asked in another video for feedback and I couldn’t get to my phone and couldn’t find the video later.

Thanks John, lovely watch abd YES on that grey market video idea 👌👌
Love the detail on the difference between the US and Euro spec car and I think it’s dope you’re trying to chase down the original importer!
Hey John, check your crankshaft end play & loosen drive shaft pinch bolt annually and retighten and then check end play. Main bearings will thank you.
Thanks Tom!

That nugget on the vacuum tubes for the door was crazy. I would never have guessed that. Always learning something.
So you’ll have one working car out of all those 928s, nice! 👍🏼

Awesome video! One small correction though. The double disc clutch was used through 1986 on all 928's. The 1987S4 switched to a single disc.
Besides everything else mentioned, the rubbery spoiler just feels good to touch. It's all about its tactile qualities😁
Don’t know if I can unsee the lobster claws and sidepipes combo!
Awesome!
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for all the background on these amazing machines
In the span of watching 2/3 of this video I've watched the subscriber number go up by 100. Heck yeah! Go Ficarra!
So far this channel has the perfect balance between informal and professional. Lots of nerdy info, nothing pretentious.

More fantastic Ficarra knowledge bombs! Thanks for the information about a model I haven't given enough time/learning/about with my air-cooled brain.
-My '85 S2 5 speed had the door bars, but they were one piece metal tubes with NO welds in the middle.

In the UK sway bars are called anti roll bars. No explanation necessary. My 80 Euro has the electric door locks which have a mind of their own.

picking one up this week!
There are much better quality stuff (& cheaper) out there now than the old dated devek suspension bits. The brake upgrades will be a nice update.
I'd relocate the battery, and switch to lithium. Those things are great for fitting into odd spaces, and you can run more than one...
Woohoo! 928 content
So is it a wing or spoiler on the GTS?

A working condition 928 requires only one reasonable mod or one pricier option to be complete…a manual 6 speed or sequential (pref with paddle shifts)

I have a rubber spoiler on my BMW E12 and I always wondered why it was rubber. Now I know.
no tank turret a la Leonard part 6?
Why didn’t you also swap for the more powerful 4 valve engine?
Great video i like a 928
When explaining the differences between a wing and a spoiler, I can’t believe you didn’t lead with “spoiler alert”….
At 12:16 you show a torque tube/transaxle. That is from the 924/944/968 series of cars, NOT from the 928~

Can you recommend someone in my area to work on ‘79 928?
