    Rob Hubbard might be the most well known and revered composer for the Commodore 64. However, Matt Gray did the best C64 track ever when writing this piece of music for The Last Ninja II.

Of all the remixers out there, and that is included Allister Brimble and Chris Huelsbeck, you are the best of them all, you capture the essence of the sid chip the exact correct way. hehe, when last years Spotify statistics arrived, the top artist i had been listening to in 2019, was Matt Gray ^^

    • @grogsrevenge
      @grogsrevenge 3 года назад +2

      Quite. What I love about Matt's style is how he stays true to the original SID sound we all love, yet makes it easier on the ears. That, and the masterful layering of additional melodies on top (19 seconds into the 2020 remake being a perfect example). I'd say the years in the music industry has been well spent, because the aforementioned points and the mastering in general is a cut above pretty much anything else I've heard.

    I suddenly had something else on my mind. I mean. If you think about it. I remember i read one of those C64 magazines and there were pictures of the upcoming game Last Ninja 2, and it looked so good, i mean, it just looked exactly like we all expected it would. But of course, in the magazine, we could not hear the music for the game. And me and my friends knew that Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees would not return. Felt like a bummer at the time you know, the legendary soundtrack they made for the first game, which today stands as one of the greatest soundtracks ever made for any game in any genre in any format on any console or machine. It's quite the feat.
    Then imagine being the guy that is going to follow up on that soundtrack. Seriously.
    And then Matt comes out with a bang and he delivers some tunes that are even better than several of the tunes from the first game. phenomenal achievement.
    Matt, i remember the day last ninja 2 came out, and man, i think i never really thought about it before now what you were up against.
    How did you even achieve it?
    If it had been me, i think the pressure would have killed me ^^

    • @MattGrayC64
      @MattGrayC64  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for that. The answer is a combination of not really thinking about it, other than trying to raise my own game and a touch of youthful confidence from inexperience. If I’d been older & more experienced I’d have probably played safe.

    • @FabledGentleman
      @FabledGentleman 4 года назад +1

      @@MattGrayC64 How old were you when you composed that soundtrack?
      I know a lot of the top composers on c64 was really young, Jeroen Tel for example was like 15 or something when he made some of those legendary tracks.

    • @MattGrayC64
      @MattGrayC64  4 года назад +1

    • @FabledGentleman
      @FabledGentleman 4 года назад +1

      @@MattGrayC64 hehe :D That is amazing you know, though times have changed, and the gaming industry is of course a behemoth now compared to back then, but still, The Last Ninja was a big deal. And to let someone of that age take the helm to follow up on such a huge hit, is quite something if you think about it.
      I'm just really amazed you actually were able to do it. It was an impossible task, for real. I just don't know if anyone else could have done it, don't even think Daglish himself could have.
      I talked to Ben two years before he died, we had a little chat about the old days, he told me about the process he went through making those tracks. Was no trackers back then, so making music for the system wasn't exactly "easy".
      I myself started making music on the Amiga in 1991, using soundtracker. One of the things i did at some point was to try and remix c64 tunes, try and make them sound more "modern". Sample each channel separately and mix them together. This is one of the reasons why I'm "stuck" with the past, and why i listen to these tunes so often, they were my entire childhood so to speak. Well lots of people of course listen to music the grew up with, i just happened to be in my teens at the exact right time for c64 and the amiga to blossom.
      When i discovered remix.kwed.org in 2001-2002 and when instant remedy released his first remix album, it was like a revelation :D
      I have heard thousands of amiga and c64 remixes. But as i have mentioned before, you are the best one. And i will continue to buy every single remix album you make.
      Oh, and btw. You are very welcome to remix Marcus Schneider's Strike Force Introtune, one of the most badass c64 tunes ever made. Short but insanely good. ;)

    • @MattGrayC64
      @MattGrayC64  4 года назад +5

      Yes it want easy to make for the 64. You had to write your own code and programming the tracks byte by byte was tedious. But because many were not able to do both the music and coding, it was probably easier to get the chance.

    This may be a contentious issue but….. if we ever see last ninja on the latest and greatest platforms... Matt Gray must be commissioned to do the soundtrack and be paid handsomely.. (No pressure! LOL) Matt’s SID tunes from the c64 years have stayed with me and millions of people worldwide my entire life.. You are a very special talent Mr Gray from a very special era in computing - The Commodore 64... Here’s hoping you read this m8, but when I played the last ninja 2 all those years ago for the first time... it left an indelible mark on my psyche that continues to this day… Amazing achievement… (Matt thinks it was just beeps, pops and basic synth rhythms… nooooo, it was the fuel to the engine of many c64 games of the day which was way way way ahead of its time……) I salute you Matt Gray!!! The remixes and Reformations releases have blown everything out of the park!!!!! Choked me up some of them did too….Central park!!! OMG
