LIGHT AND SHADOW - ART DYNAMICS TUTORIAL

  • Welcome to my latest tutorial / process video!
This month I have been partaking in 'Inktober', where artists aim to try and do a simple drawing every day for the month of October.
After completing a few drawings, I thought I would film the full process of my ‘Webstor’ from 'Masters Of The Universe' piece and some bonus footage of ‘Alien’ from the 1979 Sci Fi movie masterpiece.
To try and keep these images simple and fast to execute I have been using strong shadows and highlights to my advantage. Doing this really inspired me to make a tutorial video to show you in detail the techniques I employ and tools I use. I call this a ‘less is more’ way of working as you can create very dynamic and powerful images, yet keep things simple and fool the eye into seeing more than is actually there.
This is quite a long video and I hope you enjoy it!
Please SUBSCRIBE, hit that thumbs up and hit me up with any questions below in the comment section. ;)
    Thanks so much for watching!
    Chris

a lot of insight for multimedia artists. plus I dig how you show all the hangups and hurdles artists run into while working on a piece and you gotta bob ross that shit and keep pushing forward past the 'happy accidents'. thanks for sharing.

Don't listen to your friend; the long form video is awesome.
I prefer it- It's great to see the whole process, and the explanation of the technique behind each stage of the piece. Very entertaining, and also extremely informative.
These videos that guys like yourself, Jeff Miracola- etc. who are obviously master level artists put out are unbelievably helpful and inspiring. I view them as essentially art classes, and my own work has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years- in no small part because of videos like this.
Hope to see more- keep up the great work \m/

HI Chris, just wanted to say enjoying the longer videos. There are so many great techniques here that have been inspirational to me as an artist rediscovering painting again. I use a lot of splatter techniques in my own work which allow me to not only build up highlights but add more textured backgrounds etc. That technique I incorporated into my own art, after watching another of your videos. Anyway, keep doing what you do - you are an inspiration and your videos really do help us budding artists - BTW the Alien piece is a-ma-zing!

Chris, thanks for taking the time to share your production. Its so bloody useful! I spent weeks experimenting with different paper before I found one that worked like I wanted it to. You've cut down the learning curve for the techniques your using massively. cheers. What I love it is the level of experimentation and improvisation. Looking at one of your pieces when its finished id expect you to be well organised and know exactly what your doing. This is clearly not the case (in parts!). Its reassuring that you have the "oh shit" moments... "that's not working as I wanted it to". I'm not a sadist, I don't like seeing you battling with something. Its just very refreshing to see that it happens at all levels and that your still learning too. Things I liked the most.... 1 the castle of greyskull tripod. That was epically shit, but worked! 2. the window-lightbox. 3 the Panda-Cat. It wasn't a very helpful animal but imagine its good for moral. Keep up fine work and the videos. Love them both brother. x If you fancy doing something on colouring images (ink paint) Id be super interested... Like the subtleness and the gothic pallets that you do. Guess theres some PS in there to?. Peace brother x Will (IWillRock)

Hey Chris, I just discovered your art and I must say as an absolute fan of the Alien Creature and Giger´s Work this is one of the best if not the best depiction of it I have ever seen. The pose of the creature, the amount of detail you invest, the scene, ... everything fits perfectly to represent the mystique of Giger´s Alien and Scotts´vision of it. Simply amazing.
If you would manage to depict a Predator in this fashion it´d be even greater!

Bro, gonna try not to be long winded man, but I just want to say your work is an inspiration. I feel(felt) as if my art has been at an impasse, like I was shifting gears with it. I stubbled on your vids my happenstance really, an boy am I glad I did! Your work not only is at am amazing quality, but it has a voice. I's inspired me to push myself as an artist and strive to branch out of the box i put myself in and not limit what I myself. So many times artist get stuck in a rut - thinking one medium or style is all we can do. Your has stirred a resurgence in me for what I do, and I just want to say thank you. Blessings, and good fortune to you man.
