  • Chevy Silverado 2500 4x4 Rear End Failure. Off road Eaton g80 locker failure explained and diagnosed. My rear locking differential was not working and I diagnose the issues leading to this failure. These Eaton g80 locker have the tendency to fail overtime if they are abused.
    The Eaton G80 locker in my Chevy 2500 should be locking both rear wheels together and helping me in off road situations but as my last video showed the rear wheels were not locking up.
    This locker does get some hate because they can fail and are not really meant for heavy use. I would consider this a "light duty" locker in the sense that it is not meant for burnt outs on dry pavement. as one wheel loses traction the lever fly's out and basically slams the spider gears to a stop, locking up the diff. when on wet or snowy roads the impact is not as forceful but when on dry pavement there is a lot more force on these small fly weight and that often leads to them breaking and potentially causing the whole rear differential to fail.
    Either way I'm happy i was able to diagnose the issue in my truck and now I can go about trying to fix it and hopefully having a nice fully locking rear end!

    This guy is an actual mechanic, excellent diagnosis of the problem. I would suggest just replacing the broken shaft (if possible) , the clutch packs (plates) may never have been used!

      Thank you, I did some research before hand so I kind of knew what I was looking for. I was honestly thinking the same thing with the clutch plates but then again with the fluid that came out of the diff who knows if that has ruined them.
      either way I think just the shaft assembly is like 100 dollars and the clutches are another 150 so I'm probably going to do both.

    Pretty neat to see the working of the differential, or how it's not working and why. Great video Alex, cheers

      thank you! ya the differential is a pretty cool mechanical device and it's kind of crazy to picture how fast it would actually be spinning at like 100km/h

    I had to use a map gas torch to heat my diff fill plug to get it out. I replaced it with a 1/2" brass pipe plug that can be removed with an allen wrench.

    • @edmundanderson657

      You have to remove the governor parts and get them out of your way.
      There is a company named Kent Moore they make specialty tools for GM. They make a tool that looks like a small C clamp to remove the bushings holding the governor in. I've had mine 35+ years but can't remember the part number. You need the tool to take it apart.

      had they tend to blow up if abused which is the downside lol honestly kind of lucky just a tooth broke off and didn't take out the whole diff.

    Really special..?? Could the differential just be built with different type..?

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  3 года назад +1

      no not really I wouldn't call them special. they are nice to have though. and when they are working they work very well.
      I mean parts are cheap. for the flyweight assembly its like 130 bucks. whereas a new diff carrier would be like 500-1000 dollars depending on what i wanted

    These G-80s are innovation for sure, but no, electric lockers controlled by the user should be the norm. I see GM finally did it with the ZR2 Silverado both front and back and this is what should be happening moving forward.

    That stupid little piece o crap system doesn't have any clutch packs. You saw how chincy the rods and components are that are suppose snap into place when power is applied. Depending on what part of the country you're in snow or mud will tear those up in a heartbeat. Regardless of how one maintains them they will fail at the worst possible moment. I love my Bowtie trucks, but this is the worst system GM ever came up with and sadly they are still using this crap system to the best of my knowledge after many years and people just don' t know about it. I had 3 fail on me with different vehicles and no there aren't any clutch packs in them. I'd love to see the clutch plates make a comeback. My 65 Impala 3 peddle had that clutch plate posi rear never any problems. And yes, on occasion I raced it for fun. I will certainly be putting in a Yukon or other reliable differentials into my wife's Blazer. To GM I say please stop making garbage. I apologize for venting of sort, but this crap system needs to be gotten rid of. and screw these new electronic systems. talk about problems!

    • @edmundanderson657
      @edmundanderson657 8 месяцев назад +1

      Strange, every eaton eaton gov-lock I've served has clutch packs in them. It is a limited slip differential.
