Kudos to Gustavo! Great presenter. A real pro. And, of course, I am a long time McDouglarer. I have sent relatives to his programs. I am sixty-three and walking around with almost the same body I had when I was a young kid. For one of many examples, I do an Ironman triathon every year and finish with the young kids. My thanks to you both!
That sludgy blood is a fantastic visual. This should be shown more often to people. I think when they actually see this happening it will sink in. People on a Keto diet need to see this. It also makes sense that roman soldiers and the armies of Alexander the Great were fed on starch. They had no refrigeration back then, so there would be no way they could travel long distances and carry meat with them. However rice, wheat, and barley could easily be transported without refrigeration.
I got the book last week and it has been my bible since then. I have marked so many pages in it that it has gotten bigger in volume by the little paper markers, lol. Some of the most interesting things to me were the facts about the gladiotors beeing vegan (barley men) and the fact that we humans have 6 instead of 2 genetic positions of amylase! It all makes so much sense now! It was important to me to make that connection, to understand, what kind of "eaters" we are. This book is one great foundation of scientific work and I am determined to learn many passages from it by heart, so I can go on and tell other people in my life about it. I have been recommending "The starch solution" to many friends already. It really is a treasure to mankind. My RA is getting slowly better and I have been on the "diet" for 10 days now. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Sincerely, Christina from Adelberg, Germany.
Christina Hees How is your RA after 4 years? Did you stick to the diet with discipline? Did it work? My 70 year old mother and I (45) are about to start
Thank you Dr McDougall. I took your advice and gradually stop eating meat. I can feel and see the benefits in just a few weeks. Now I can bend my fingers in the morning and no stiffness in the legs in evening. Thank you so much for getting me healthy. You are great with facial hair or not. Blessings be with you and family from Malaysia.
I have been doing this and it is SOOO easy. not boring...go online so many recipes. made brownies yesterday from a Japanese sweet potato a date and some unsweetened coco. zero fat, zero simple sugar and is amazing. spicy .potato corn chowder, mashed potatoes...havent got bored eating 3 potatoes times a day....and the fat is melting off my body
I love your book. I have several doctor friends that I am trying to convince to read it One of my surgeon friends has finally realized that he needs to be vegan. We are winning the diet war one person at a time.
My bosses are stuck on keto. I come in to work with my Oatmeal, my salad with quinoa, potatoes and beans, lots of vegetables and my homemade hummus salad dressing. I snack on fruit. They think I'm nuts.
Incredible (but inevitable) how traditions change the way MD's in different countries see the matter. As long as I remember (I am 45) here in Italy doctors used to recommend very low intake of meat and cheese (although milk was a world apart, highly recommended for children), just fish as common animal food and fruits/veggies/starches (but not differentiating between whole and refined), and of course the culture of olive oli sets no restrictions to it apart for weight loss. The point is last 20 years changed a lot the way people here look at food too. Grains were demonized (and there are even reasons due to the lowering quality of grains used today), on contrary (animal) protein became the chimera of sport amateurs and so on...they then entered even into the sedentary daily meal, sometimes two meals a day. Obesity has increased, children are overweight, diabete has increased to huge numbers such as 4 millions people out of 60. It would be so easy to adopt a global starch solution here, to go back to the traditional mediterranean starch based diet (beans and grains), the only issue is olive oil and fish, not a big issue. But fancy diets such as the atkins and now the carnivore-paleo got here too...and a lot of junk food, even the one packaged in fake healthy style
Here is the answer we have been looking for!! My ankles look unusually swollen though but perhaps I am adding too much salt to the potatoes. I also heard another RUclipsr saying you needed to take electrolytes with the diet?? Thanks a million both. Losing weight daily and so full up 👏👏👏
I've been a vegetarian and a starch eater since I was born. While most of what Dr McDougall says is true you still become deficient in B12 and D3 both of which are very important for growth. I had suffered from mild forms of anemia, b12, and d3 deficiencies when I was young and from my experience I can tell you that milk, yogurt and other diary products are essential for the diet.
+bulbadox Why consume milk products as an unreliable source of B12 that's only in it in the first place because it's added to the animal feed when you can just cut out the middle man and take the supplement yourself? Yes, a B12 supplement is necessary for vegans to have a reliable intake, no it's not any more "unnatural" than consuming milk products from another species. It's not just a problem for vegans only either. Many vegetarians suffer from B12 deficiency and purely because of numbers, most people with B12 deficiency follow an omnivore diet. As for vitamin D: Humans evolved running naked through the African savanna, and under those circumstances you don't need to supplement. Even with light skin, if you live in a temperate climate, you will not get sufficient vitamin D regardless of what you eat for at least several months per year. With how much time people spend indoors usually, they don't get enough at any time of year. Dairy products will not get you even close to the ideal levels of vitamin D, regardless of how much of them you consume. Trying to get your vitamin D from dairy is about as bad as an idea as getting it from fortified margerine. Why would you want to eat the least healthy foods to have slightly less of a deficiency when you can have no deficiency with a supplement? In fact taking a supplement for your vitamin D is *better* for you than having lots of sun exposure, because you get the benefit of adequate vitamin D levels, without the risk for skin cancer. Dr. Greger on nutritionfacts.org has videos on the ideal vitamin D levels according to modern science and if you watch them you'll see there is no way for you to get there by adding dairy, fish or sun exposed mushrooms to your diet. They simply do not contain enough to compensate for not producing it in your own skin as humans used to do. If you watch some more of his videos you should also realize why consuming dairy is not a good idea ever. From my experience, as well as based on what the science and many other individuals say, I can tell you, dairy products are very much not essential at all. If they were, many people around the world wouldn't have survived as long as they did. Dairy products as a food staple are not common outside of the influence sphere of Western style diets, nor were they part of the human diet for long at all.
+Podimann Thank you for your detailed reply. I did take supplements when I was first diagnosed with low b12, since then I've been maintaining that level through flavored yogurt. My current b12 levels are 291 pg/ml and 36.4 ng/ml of d3 (through sun).

the thing that sucks the most on the german version of "the starch solution" is that the cover translates into "the high carb diet - loosing weight with the right carbs"... so everyone i gives this book to think its "yet another diet book"...

I did that strictly!!! for 9 months and potatoes left me hungry and my sugars were up!!! Calories DO matter!!! I'm not going and after 35-38 lbs all stopped for months!!
Veterinarians recommend grain to fatten every animal on the farm. But doctors recommend it to lose weight. Seriously? Who in their right mind could think that eating MORE carbs could make America thinner and healthier??? This is nuts.
People have come to confuse the different 'carbs'... Refined carbs ( white flour, white sugar, packaged foods are the 'bad' carbs... Whole grsins, fruits and vegetables ( whole foods) are full of vitamins, minerals and fiber and are NOT the culptit!
Dr McDougall and Dr Greger, my two favorite doctors in the world!

It is a lot hardy for me to give up starch than meat, so happy to learn it is healthier for me. Thanks for your delicious recipes.

Happy New Beard!!!
Is there a McDougall video that quickly gets to the point about how and why to eat starch based? One that isn't an hour long?
How about people with Hshimottos Thyroditis- can they follow this diet ?
Can I get the book in Swedish?
I am a starchavore and thriving! He mentions percentage of starch. Is that percentage CALORIC or QUANTITY?
If you mean the 50/50 plan, it's the amout of starch on your plate..half starch, half non-starchy veggies.
I hope this isn’t silly... I’m trying to remember the wonderful lady that you work closely with? I can’t seem to find her here. I’m ready to buy my Instant Pot! I got of track for awhile.

you do realize you compared humans to cows...
Cows are herbivores while humans are frugavores. Grain will digest differently in a cow.
And animals are fed fat to become insulin resistant.
