  • In this video, I show my installation of an Icom ID-5100A into my 2015 Jeep Wrangler.

    Here are the links to the components used for the install:
    Radio: amzn.to/2lKGEjK
    Antenna: amzn.to/2MDa2Ur
    Coax: amzn.to/2Kld2Il
    NOTE: This came with an SMA connector which I had to change, but I needed to cut it off anyway to run the cable. This won't fit directly without an adapter or connector change.
    Fishing magnets: amzn.to/2IHnC74
    Cat 6 Extension cable: amzn.to/2IL9728
    8 Gauge Wire: amzn.to/2MFRXVZ
    Rubber sheet for ant mount: amzn.to/2tSP0JK
    Wire harness tape: amzn.to/2tJLr9m
    30 Amp Circuit Breaker: amzn.to/2NdmR97

    Nice installation! I would have never thought of mounting with magnets, but that's a neat idea.

    I've been running an ID-5100 in a JKU for almost 2 years. Larsen NMO 2/70 antenna, Accessories Unlimited AUJ1 fender mount, and LMR-240 Coax (yeah the .1dB difference in loss vs RG-8 was that important to me lol). It's an absolutely awesome mobile rig.
    One thing, though: the "don't run your *DC* power parallel to your coax" statement is incorrect information that is passed down from generation to generation. Just like the truck stop wisdom of "your CB coax needs to be exactly 18 feet long." It is perfectly acceptable run *DC* power parallel to coax.

    Yes sir, if you have time, would love to see some more videos with this radio and set up, I plan on putting the same one in my Jeep, I passed my tech class a week ago last monday, studying for the general exam while I wait on my FCC Call sign. :)

      It's great in the Jeep. Only downside is the speaker. If you mount the body remotely or under the seat, you won't be able to hear it above 45MPH.

    Great video! I didn’t see in here but where do we ground our mobile radios on a Jeep? I have my Kenwood grounded to the negative battery post with the inline fuse in place. I was doing some reading and there are different opinions out there about whether we should ground to the battery or to the chassis. What do you think?

    You could loosen those set screws and adjust the length a bit. I have the same antenna in a Comet, and it's tunable to a certain degree.

  • @shawnm2597
    @shawnm2597 4 года назад

    You're good. Under 2 swr with your setup is good. Not worth trimming the antenna. And you may want to use caution about blocking the fan. That base module for the 5100 gets hot when you start transmitting. Your tool roll covered some of the exhaust fan when you put it up in there... be careful as it will shutdown due to heat.

  • @FlonishaMerritt
    @FlonishaMerritt 6 лет назад

    Great video. I did a very similar install using the same mount on the passenger side, with a Diamond NR73B antenna, and a yaesu FT-7900. But my SWR isn't as low. 444.000 @ 1.2 and 144.000 @ just under 2.

      Flonisha Merritt CHRIS????? LOL

    • @chrishale828
      @chrishale828 6 лет назад

      It could be a couple things, could be a coaxial issue (not exactly 50 ohms) could be an interference issue with the center load and “A” pillar creating an inductive or capacitive load...and a few other unlikely things... while ~1.9:1 SWR isn’t ideal....the losses are still only a couple of percent and in real life situations, you would probably never see an appreciable difference in performance between 1.9:1 and 1:5:1 SWR....hooking it up to an antenna analyzer would tell a bit more information also...as long as there isn’t excess heat that the unit and fan (if equipped) cannot handle, you should be OK also to be considered is that antenna is 2 5/8L on 440 which makes for a lot of gain but requires loading to bring down to 50ohms...could be the antenna needs a little tuning which Diamond doesn’t seem to provide much information on...

    Put a downward facing cable tie around the antenna cable at the antenna port of the trx and and any water running along the antenna cable will drip down.

    Great vid. Very helpful. When you ran the antenna wire from the engine area thru the firewall, where did the wire come out in the driver side? Did you have to pull carpet up? Or take some plastic panels off to see the wire come thru the firewall?

    • @o3djeeps
      @o3djeeps  5 лет назад +1

      There is a rubber grommet in the firewall above and to the outside of the brake pedal area. If you shove your head under there you can find it. I did pull off the side kick panel. I already have no carpet.

    Awesome setup, my only concern is the future of exposed water to rust from the bare metal on your antennae mount bracket do you foresee that being as issue?. Once again awesome setup. Thanks

    • @o3djeeps
      @o3djeeps  6 лет назад

      B McD that's why I was careful to only sand the parts that were covered. There are no exposed bare metal sections. I was considering putting some sealant around the edges of the bolts and the bottom of the bracket....but I wanted to make sure everything was good first.

    One more thing: it is a common mistake to look only at SWR and think you have a great install. If you only check the SWR for the antenna in that location, you are missing half of the equation. You also need to look at the *reactance* ("X" on a proper antenna analyzer) as well. Your antenna placement is very close to the A-pillar and will experience reactance. The net result is that your antenna will not be ideally resonant within the 2m/40cm bands despite showing decent SWR; it will be ideally resonant below the bands, and impact your performance.
    I know this because I went through the same exercise when installing my UHF/VHF antenna in a similar location (actually further from the a-pillar).

    God bless you for owning a Jeep, i bought one brand new in 2016 poured 30k into it in lift and tires bumpers body panels lights etc. Loved the way it looked, hated the way it drove. Great utility vehicle bad daily driver. The most under powered 4x4 on the planet. Bought a diesel pickup and chouldn't be happier. Anyway, to each his own, love the radio, I own the same one and I love how easy it helps you navigate digital. awesome video.

    I'm sure you know by now, but the ICOM's don't transmit on FRS/GMRS without opening it up and modifying the board. That's the #1 reason Jeep owners want them. Correct me if I'm wrong here. So you might want to mention that.
    EDIT: Looks like you explained it in the next video. Probably should have mentioned it here that it's ILLEGAL and will not transmit on GMRS/FRS legally, for other Jeep owners.
