Hi, fellow ham. I am a fan from Japan. It's nice to see someone eles make a hole on the top of brand new truck for antenna! I have a 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser Dubble cab truck and made two holes on top of the roof for ID-5100 and FTM-400DH!! 73 de 7K2LGO (NY6A)
This video was NOT boring at all. I really enjoyed it as I too will be installing a VHF/UHF Antenna (same brand and model number) on my truck, although I have a Ford and a Yaesu FT-7900R radio. Either way, watching someone go through the mounting procedure is always interesting.
Hello, Earl W8CEO here. And I want to say that I certainly appreciate this video. Why? Because I have a 2018 Chevy Silverado Crew-cab pickup Myself As your’s and I have a ( Icom 2300 H ) 2 meter mobile that I have been wondering just how in the heck am l going to install this 2 meter mobile radio? Just by chance I was surfing through some amateur videos on here. And came across your installation video! And I’ve got to say thank you so much for making this video on your 2018 Chevy Silverado Truck! Your absolutely correct in it’s a total pain in doing any type of installation of any type of Amature Radio’s into this newer vehicles! I’ve been under the hood, under the body looking for some where, and how to run the power cables from the battery to inside this truck cab? And Man! You just Save this Ole 70 yr’s old man a bunch of headaches, and fretting in how to get this accomplished! Thank you, thank you for making this video! It’s a God Sent unto this ole man! Lol I’ve currently have a comet mag-mount on the roof. And I don’t like the idea of the coax cable running over the outside of this vehicle. But after seeing this video I believe that I’m going to go with the CA-2x4 4SRNMO BROADBAND VHF/UHF Antenna. It’s has the Spring that comes with it, and since your video I know now! How to install it as well. Just wanted to Say Thank You Again for Making This Video! God Bless and 73’s Thanks again Earl W8CEO
One of the better install videos because it was real world, including the decision making process and a bit of “we’ll see if it works” stuff. That’s better than those where everything is already planned out. Oh and the 5100 is a great radio so great install all around...even though I know it’s not a recent video.
Wandering Wagners I see now that you got a new truck. Did you install the 5100 in it? I’m assuming yes but I didn’t see a video on it (unless I missed it) so did it *really* get installed? 😂😁😂 /s
Hi Mike it's Manny love the cap looks really good on a truck I spoke to you about a month ago 2 months about getting a new truck I end up getting a GMC Sierra you are right very good on gas very happy with it thanks for the great video God bless you and the wife safe travels my friend
Catching up on videos as we were traveling, but that cap looks FANTASTIC on the truck. That will be some awesome additional storage space for you guys. Wish I could do that.
Its two hot for me to work in the shop today so a good install video was way better than some of the stuff I have seen lately. The new cap makes the truck you guys have look even better. Don't forget its best to keep your speed down when hauling a RV..LOL
Never had a Ham radio, always had the CB in all of our RV's and cars. I know you all loved us with our 250-watt bi-linear's, power mikes and cobra radios! I had a friend who ran a 1200 watt Palamar tube linear in his Lincoln! That is a nice looking camper shell you purchased and will work well for you both!
You may want to trim your A.M./FM radio antenna on the truck since it is hitting the garage door. It will also hit in a parking garage. I had to trim mine on my Ford F-150 Truck. I took the ball of of the antenna, cut it shor, ter, epoxied the ball back on, and sprayed it with flat black pain. Looks original, but I don’t scrape the antenna like I did befor the trim job.
This is the exact install I'm doing on my 25 Trail Boss. Luckily my garage door is tall enough to clear a 19" antenna. Instead of going through the firewall for power I'm going to the unused sunroof fuse on the passenger side fuse panel. It's a 30A slot and my radio only needs 15A.
Great video. We have two radio install dealers here locally for law enforcement and first responders. I couldn’t imagine not dropping by and asking a guy that does it every single day “Hey, do you mind telling me where these best place is to drill this hole?” They’re all very helpful to us hams, generally.
Loved the install video! Keep us updated on if you have any interference issues with the transmitter and the truck electronics. Keep up the great videos! 73s de N6UGP.
Ham, trucks and RVs are never boring. Almost 3 years later is the truck still with you? I'm a hole drilling chicken partly because I can never make up my mine where the antenna(s) will go. Solid antenna. Used to have a CA2x4 on a fold over mount that would occasionally go into the garage in the up position and get bent 90*. It survived the abuse and 15 years later is still working.
We do not still have the pickup in this video but it did great without issues while we owned it! We've drilled holes in a lot of our brand new vehicles, so I'm sure it'll happen again in the future haha
I know its been a while, but may I suggest to first cover the work area 12x12 with duct tape and to drill a pilot hole. It helps with heat dissipation and scratches from the shavings. Never brush the shavings aside. Always shopvac from directly 'above' the surface.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Drew Sam thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Cap looks great on the truck, They make a short black rubber antenna for your radio to replace the factory steel stiff one, i noticed it rubbed the garage door backing out, i get mine at O`Reillys auto parts and have been using them for years on all my trucks.
We don't park in the garage so it's not big deal. The truck is never in there unless I need to work on it or install something. Otherwise we would do something like that
Truck looks great! I’ve had two ARE toppers, one without window/doors and one with. I personally will now not buy one without the doors, they come in way to handy. Thanks for another great video, has sparked my interest in getting my ham license.
Thanks we definitely wanted the windows and the sliding screens will be great for ventilation if we are hauling something like gasoline etc. Look into getting your ham license! I'm an extra class and a volunteer examiner
I had that antenna on my Kia Soul but mounted at the lower end of the tail gate so it barely poked out the top. It’s a long antenna! But it’s performance is amazing.
Nice setup. I’ve always used a lip mount and run the feed line through the fender opening by the front doors though. Hope to you hear you on the air when we finally hit the road next year. De AH6P Dennis
Good video. The antenna link in your description says it is for a PL 259 connection not the NMO that you used. I see Amazon has a different listing for the Comet 2X4SR NMO mount one. I'm also a ham extra and have a 2017 Silverado. I want to drill the roof also. Thanks.
As an alternative, I recently picked up a SofTopper for my truck. It obviously isn't a hard shell, but it's nice because it can collapse and fold down when needed for larger items and easy to remove and not take up a lot of space if you don't want it on there.
Agreed and it fits your situation perfectly. I was throwing it out there as an option to your viewers as an alternative. It's the same size as your hard cover when up, but can collapse if needed. I'll tag/share it on your FB on a comment of mine in a recent post.
Nice cap.....we're looking into that option as well.as for the radio stuff, the wife told me no holes in our truck. I'm good for holes in the new vehicle. My Yeasu FT100D is under my seat and the IC710G is under her seat.the ATAS 120 is on my door and the dual bander is on her door.the CB is now on her side of the center console, with a magnet mount on the roof. Great video of the install. 73s catch you down the log. KB3EJW
I would love to get into Ham radio.Used to be into side band and loved the distance i could get.Ham gets even better distance..Great video, thanks for sharing.
D00d! That was awesome! Nice Rig. I have a 2x4 for the broad band capabilities. I put it on a Larsen mag mount, which is NOT enuf to keep it on the roof! I need to find another solution. I did not know how easy the inside of the truck came apart! For being bored, you did great. There is a lot of great info, and some really informative shots. TU 73 GD DX!
Can't you plug the mic into the control head? My IC 2710 and Yaesu 7900 can be worked from the control head. You are going to be extremely happy you chose the cap windows to open, especially with the low profile cap. WB2IRE
Great vidjayo. Thanks for the template. Going to put one in my Sierra. Do you ever do hf on your camping trips? Considering a 23ft flying cloud and hamming from it. Or do rv parks frown upon it? Thanks KB6YYH
Good Job. I have an Icom IC-2100 mounted in my 2014 GMC Sierra. Mounted radio against center console (not ideal) using a lip mount antenna between hood and fender (somewhat directional - roof mount is ideal). I have an Icom 7100 in the travel trailer which I probably should instal in the truck. Good Video - you got me thinking about mounting the 7100 in truck! Look forward to QSO on DStar someday. 73 DE W3IAX
By connecting it directly to the battery, is there a way to turn it off? You might want to connect it to a fuse that is only powered with the ignition on. Just a suggestion.
Nice cap. I've looked at everything and actually like the ARE the best of all of them. We're looking at a way to haul our German Shedders without dog hair all over the inside of my truck. They build a cooler for the cap that K9 handlers use to keep the dogs cool.
Two alternative (tongue in cheek) radio mounting methods are: Friction mount- radio laying loose on the carpet! Projectile mount- radio laying loose on the dash!
Nice installation video. I got some reaction when I opted to use an NMO mount in the middle of the roof even though the truck is far from new.. Right now, I just use the antenna with my HT but still shopping for an HF rig. Since my desire is to use it while out with the RV, I'm looking at mobile rigs. AL6T
Howdy: Nice job!!! I put my comet antenna 2m/440 on my 1987 Nissan 4x4 On a roll bar and what a range I got on 2m, wow The roll bar made a major difference in range! I also had a fold over antenna gave a issue Folding over,But I kept working on it and it finally Broke it loose and it was also a comet. 73's Guys Jeff ke4tgh
I noticed your license plate on another video and wondered if you had anything about installing a radio and antenna. Do you have a radio in your Airstream? We are thinking of doing fulltime RV next year and I will want to set up a shack in ours.
Just a question. . .. Wouldn't it be better to mount the antenna so that it bends towards the rear? That way, should you forget to lower it before putting it in the garage, it would fold over while hitting the door rather than breaking off. If it's laid over in the garage after pulling in, you wouldn't have to worry that it's up in the garage when backing out. . . .(??)
Those antennas need to have the main part pulled up first before they will lay over, so hitting the door will be a "bad result" regardless. He could have laid it over to the rear just as easily as to the front, but if you notice his rafter was in the way to lay it over backwards.
We don't park in the garage and if we go into a parking garage we'd have to lift then fold it over. We are always aware that it's there. Every time l truck we've owned has had a roof antenna
ARE served me well. It looks great! You let Comet bend you over on your antenna not bending over? Call them and get a replacement for your friend. That box with wires was your air bag control module, good idea to stay away from that. LOL. You're not a bad 12v install guy. All these new vehicles are a PITR ti install stuff. No room. Don't fly into the garage, if you bounce you'll see a comet fly.
excellent i have the exact same thing and with better locks i can place alot stuff in the truck now well protected and i recommend you get a locking clasp from amazon only few bucks but a life saver . good job you'll always get alot views when you do installations on u tube good jobfor your tailgate as well
I'm not a fan of the look, I also like that the roof gives a much better ground plane for the antenna. A fender mount works though, and it's a much easier install.
Really nice ARE cap. I own the Z Series model with keyless entry. I think you will love it. That install looked easy in the video but I'm pretty sure it was more difficult in real life. Is a ham radio more beneficial to an RV'er than a CB?
Both have their benefits, CB gives you more real time road info but that band is so full of garbage. Ham radio gives you a much broader reach and the people are very polite. My radio can talk to another mobile unit about 25 miles away, working through a repeater that distance can double. Using D-star (digital mode) that same radio can talk around the world. D-star has a "channel" dedicated to truckers and RV'ers.
Yes, much farther range. VHF/UHF with about fifty watts, plus repeaters, can extend the range up to 100 miles. CB is limited to 4 watts, with ten miles at best. Plus hams are more helpful, CBers are mostly clowns. You'd need to be licensed by the FCC, and that's passing a test about the rules, operations, and some knowledge of electronics. Lots of 411 on YT about getting the FCC license.
yup, this is true, 100 miles if the repeater is in the mountains. D-star is digital, networked kinda like cell phones. But you can talk with many people. The FCC requires good edicate and procedure. Ham radio also can have skywarn and other helpful public services. If you get lost, or need help, locals are glad to help. CB can get "smokey" reports for speeders. lol
To take the FCC license test, you'll need to find a local VE, often with a repeater club. VE's issue the tests. Whilst camping, you may find other hams to talk with to pass some time. Part of the fun is seeking them out. btw Mike, does Lynn also have a license? If not, she can transmit IF you act as her control operator.
I wasnt sure if it was like a scanner. I have one (a scanner) in my truck and it keeps me awake at night plowing during the winter. Cool! and love the cap!
I know this has been posted for some time and I watch when you first upload but one question, I did you not install the antenna on the cap on the truck bed?
We talked about this in a previous video. We are still going full time. Mike kept his same job. However we are still waiting for our house to sell before we can hit the road
Nice work! So, do you broadcast while driving or just listen? You mentioned the box under the passenger seat having a mic port so I was wondering if you did that. Also, where can we give you a listen? I don't know much of anything about HAM radio so not even sure if anyone can just do that. Overall, great video.
Step bit.... NOOOOOO!!!! Get the proper tool so you won’t deform the sheet metal or damage the headliner. If you trade vehicles often, as you said, and tend to drill holes then an investment in the proper tool to drill a hole makes sense. I have a hole saw, from a company by the name of Laird, that I’ve used on four of my personal vehicles over the years. The initial investment will pay off if you do multiple vehicles over the years and, there’s very little risk of damage and the hole is perfect for an NMO mount. After I drill a hole I take a small needle file and go underneath the the cut to remove burrs as well as any primer so the mount will fit flush and obtain a good ground.

AL6T
I've always used and liked the NMO mounts. Thanks for watching!
Howdy: Nice job!!!
I put my comet antenna 2m/440 on my 1987 Nissan 4x4
On a roll bar and what a range I got on 2m, wow
The roll bar made a major difference in range!
I also had a fold over antenna gave a issue
Folding over,But I kept working on it and it finally
Broke it loose and it was also a comet.

Thanks for watching, 73
I noticed your license plate on another video and wondered if you had anything about installing a radio and antenna. Do you have a radio in your Airstream? We are thinking of doing fulltime RV next year and I will want to set up a shack in ours.
I currently don't have a radio in the Airstream for a while I used an HT running through my Icom in the truck on crossband repeat
Awesome 👏👍 Video thanks for showing you two work so well and we Really enjoyed the video you guys Rock. ..thanks Keep up the amazing ..video....
Thank you, and glad you enjoyed this video
If I could go back in time, I would get the 5100a instead of the yaesu ftm 400.
I love it
Nice video like the cap was it painted to match truck
Yes they paint it to match your factory paint
Great video. Nice job.
Thanks for watching!👍
K4MDN love the Airstream videos y’all got the wife and I wanting one. 73 y’all
She has good taste! Haha we love our Airstream. 73
I don't park in the garage so no worries there haha I rarely needed to bend it over so I never pursued comet for it.
excellent i have the exact same thing and with better locks i can place alot stuff in the truck now well protected and i recommend you get a locking clasp from amazon only few bucks but a life saver . good job you'll always get alot views when you do installations on u tube good jobfor your tailgate as well
How is the radio base attached under your seat?
Drilled holes and bolted it to the floor
@@WanderingWagners Thank you!
The Icom 5100A is a great rig. I have been using the Buddipole antenna, but I can only use it when I get to a campsite. KB4LL
I've really enjoyed this radio. Had it for a few years or so
Awesome install vid. Didn't know you was a Ham. Do you participate in Ohio parks on the air? Or Field day?
I've been a ham since 2003. I normally don't do field days though
Mike, What HT are you using now?
Yaesu ft3dr, love it!
How do you feel about front fender mounts ?
I'm not a fan of the look, I also like that the roof gives a much better ground plane for the antenna. A fender mount works though, and it's a much easier install.
i just noticed new truck hmmm
We got the truck in December
Getting the license isn't that hard, and I'm also a VE (volunteer examiner)!
yup, this is true, 100 miles if the repeater is in the mountains.
Legit question here, what's the point of that radio.
It's just a fun hobby and it works when cell phones don't.
The antenna needs ground plane, or in other words a surface that can reflect the signal.
Good one
Thanks!
Are you going full time R Ving , or did you take that full time job for the state
We talked about this in a previous video. We are still going full time. Mike kept his same job. However we are still waiting for our house to sell before we can hit the road
Bravo et merci pour ce partage. Falco
De rien!
Nice work! So, do you broadcast while driving or just listen? You mentioned the box under the passenger seat having a mic port so I was wondering if you did that. Also, where can we give you a listen? I don't know much of anything about HAM radio so not even sure if anyone can just do that.
Overall, great video.
Both. I'm a licensed ham radio operator
I had to watch to see if you were really going to drill a hole in the roof of your truck. That hurt dude.
“I wouldn’t be able to get into the garage if I had a couple inches of rise”. *Proceeds to install a giant antenna on the roof*
Antenna folds over at the base.
OK, Drilling HOLES in your New Truck caught my interest....LOL
It went down without a hitch. Not the first time I've cut holes in my new trucks though😂
Good job on the install. I love my 5100.... Enjoy! Bob KD2GAE
Thanks for watching! 73
Dirty is okay, I always get bloody from knicks and scrapes.
nice install but i screamed NO when u drilled in TO THE NEW TRUCK I cryed to drill in to my old 77 chey
It's no big deal anymore, considering I drill holes in every truck I own for ham radio antennas haha
Yes, it was a bit boring, but early on I got to see Guy, and that made it better.
Guy makes every video better haha

Yes boring. Worth watching about the step bit. I've drilled holes in the center of my roof. FYI, I used an old saw blade to stiffen it up.
Thanks for watching!
and just how do your puppies feel about all the chatter disturbing their sleep hmmm lmao
They were having a great time gaming out in the garage with us🐶😊
Nice install, de n5rcs. 73
Thank you 73!
Love the videos. Keep them coming. KD0OSF 73
Thanks for watching, we appreciate the support! 73
Cap looks great. Left after the radio talk. Waiting for the next video.
Thanks for watching some of it😉
I use a mag mount ant. That way no one knows... Good vid
I prefer hard mounted antennas. No cables rub paint this way and the hole is always covered, even if the antenna is removed.
Nice job thks for sharing and it was not boring its a how to video for us visual impaired folks... lol yep that would be me..
Well thanks for sticking it out and watching it!😁
Nice installation! 73, KF7AJT
Thanks! 73
Cool story.
Kb3bxl here
73!
The topper looks awesome. Plus A.R.E. is made in Ohio.
Didn't realize that. Nice!
