- New Jeep JK and now a new super clean Ham Radio install to go with it. I originally intended to recycle the radio install from my old Jeep TJ but accidentally "fell into" a whole new direction. This is a simple yet best Jeep JK ham radio install ever.
I had also promised a review on the Yaesu FT2 Fusion handheld. Watch this video before you buy one. - Наука
Dude, that setup is SWEET, really nice install. That hole already in place in the Jeep makes things really easy.
Very nice install Bob.
Excellent video! Just what I needed to see as I’m adding comms to my JKU. Just found your channel...liked and subbed.
Bob. I lent my ft400 to a friend and he asked me to program his DMR uv380. I told him keep the ft400 the uv380 gave me an aneurism try to program. Ft70 here I come. Love you man. 73s K9PAL
Awesome install Bob! That FTM-400 looks great! 👍🏻 73
Nice job, looking at the same unit. N0VBD
Hi Bob,
Thanks for the info on the FT2DR with a MAC. Nice clean install in the Jeep. 73 WB3BJU
Nice installation! Time to get some mud on that beast! :)
Looks good buddy. I love the idea of you ripping up that jeep barely a month into it.
Thanks. I love the ripping into it starting the the day I brought it home.
Regarding the Yaesu 2D:
I very much agree with you about drivers. I wish Yaesu would pull their head out and realize that people want to buy a system, not just a radio. The one thing they did do right was micro-ssd which is the only way I program these radios.
Touch screen is OK, would have like to see capacitive touch (like iPhone). But here's the thing, I'm not sure the user interface is that much better even though it has a touch screen.
I use the radio a lot of SOTA operations and I do like the APRS beaconing, GPS (as a backup to my phone) with the ability to mark where I parked just in case. As a radio, it's great, it's tough, etc. User interface is just as confusing to store a repeater channel or worse than others. They have the ability to present a clear user interface (UI) that would step a user through setting up a frequency but nope... They still use the "Bank" feature to group channels, nice but they could have made changing banks easier.
I've been playing with an AnyTone AT-868UV and love this new radio. As an analog radio, it kicks butt, as a DMR radio, I think it's tops! Try one out. I'm a PC users and I can tell you they make programming it easier and there's no goofing around pressing buttons on the radio to download. Just hookup up the cable and start writing, the radio auto-detects the write and just works. Additionally, they allow you to upload channels, and other configuration data. Export a config file from the radio, like channels, to get the format, bring the data in from another radio and then re-load.
OK... I'll stop there, I wrote more on hamninja.com.
Thanks for the video.
Nice install! I just installed the FTM-400DR in my car and love it 73 de N1AD Steve
Well it looks like you can send me that Retevis to try if your not going to use it LOL. That's how it goes, always coming up with something else. Great video Bob!
Great idea
Looking forward to you doing an in depth video on the new Yaesu FT3-DR ! Looks like it will be the cousin of the FTM400xdr.
Hell, I'm looking forward to getting my greasy little paws on one in person.
Hi Bob, congratulations on your new Jeep. I’m still struggling with what to install in mine, mainly for the antenna support as I was hoping to install it on the tire rack in the back. The FTM-400DR is a good choice. 73 Pascal VA2PV
Nice clean install Bob, excellent work.

Hi Bob. I purchased a low cost Windows PC for the sole purpose of programming my ham radios. Solvedvall my programming issues (yes, I'm a Mac guy since the beginning of computers). The FT2 is a great radio with a lot of capabilities, a real sleeper in my opinion. I also have the FTM 400. Your buddy needs to crank out those under seat mounts for retail; I'd love one to fit my new JL. Nice install, keep up the great videos.
Yep, that may be on the list. Thanks.
Hey, just an FYI. For all my radios, I use RT Systems software for programming. I love their software, as I can cut and paste frequencies between radios, it's super fast. I also read somewhere that they are releasing software for the Mac. It may be an avenue for you to get Mac programming software. Good luck, 73
If you can find one, I'd get a ft1d. Can have simple programming and still have aprs too.
I'm looking at getting a ft2 Radio. GigaParts has a good price on it. And with the qrz discount code with there are anniversary thing and contest they are running on QR Zedd even a better price. Providing the Lord provides the ship to come in. Both great radios ftm400 and ft2.
Just purchased a 2019 Rubicon and picked up my Technician Class license as well. With so many choices on mounts and antenna options I've been struggling to find a good combination of both - perfect timing on the video. Would you mind sharing which Diamond K400 trunk mount you selected and the antenna selected - thanks! Great video, particularly on fabricating a mounting solution.
I detailed it all right here: ruclips.net/video/kURDuqda7xI/видео.html
Yup, that’s why after buying a vx-8dr and an ft-991, I’m going to Kenwood.
Surprise, new comment. :)
I like where you mounted that face, but how much of a PITA was it to get that wire fished down behind the dash? My current CB is mounted under the glove box so I will probably mount my ham body there since the power and antenna wires are already there and then I'd like to get the face up there where yours is. Plan B is to just put it down in front of the gear shift below the hill decent and butt warmer buttons.
Looks great, but have a question. Read somewhere that the FM antenna should be about 18 inches away from Ham Radio antenna. Thoughts on this?
That would be ideal but you’re Wrangler has limited space to make a ground plane.
Great video. I love that bracket! Where did you ground to? Negative battery post or chassis grounding point?
Battery.
K6UDA thanks!!!! KE5QNG
Bob, thank you again! I just bought a JK, retiring my TJ... (fifth Jeep). The install looks straightforward. The antenna mount a snap. I’ll go with your antenna choice...
The only change up, is the radio, an iCom IC7000, body mounted below the passenger seat & inside a tyvek bag (dust). The face will be mounted similar to yours.
As for an HF screwdriver, where would you mount it? Curious to know your thoughts...
73! Hope to see you down the log. KD7UXQ
Thats an easy one for me, I installed a rear bumper with a swing out tire mount. It has built in antenna mounts. Sorry, I don't know what brand, I got it used.
Bob, I installed the same exact setup with a 50 watt mirage vhf/uhf 50 watt amp under the seat. What a great idea you gave me.👍👍. Partition that Mac hard drive and run windows on the second partition.
Been looking at putting a HAM in my 16 jku but damn its expensive to put a quality unit in it.
When was the FT-2DR review? I haven't tried it yet, but the Yaesu website has drivers available or are those the ones that do not work?
DdraigX well it was short and in this video. Good news for you is, after the FT2 went on sale for under $300 I just ordered another one and I’ll work on another review video. After the FT70 review drops this week.
@@K6UDA Awesome I just picked one up from the sale also. First thing I feel like I "have to" read the manual on.
Is that a monster Jeep? I looks like you have a huge lift on it!
I broke down and bought the RT Systems software to deal with the FT2DRs programming.
As much as I love RT systems software you shouldn't have to buy something from another vendor to make a radio useable especially a $400 radio.
Windows is king for ham radio windows is king everywhere
That is one kick ass install! I run a FTM-400 in my car, and my install looks like a turd compared to yours.
Nice install 73 from Saudi Arabia HZ
Thanks.
Hey you look really familiar are you from Bronte? I think I met you 2 mos ago talking jeep jack hood mounts
Do you still have the RT-95 and if so would you be willing to part with it
I do have it but like a lot of my stuff, its packed to move. I have no idea what box its in.
Hi, what team do you think is best? Yaesu FT-2DR or Icom IC-51D? Thank you
I think the FT2 has a lot more functionality than the ID-51A+. I haven't played with a D model.
Thanks‼️
On a very sunny day, does the unit overheat?
Never has for me. I the summer, it typically over 100 degrees here.
Hey Bob, I worked with you several times at PCSO. I have a few questions, is there a way to contact you other than here, or is this the best option?
Bill
Sure. email me at k6udaradio@gmail.com
Hi what radio do you have in the jeep dash ? Is it a GPS head unit I'm looking for a unit for my 2010 JK
I'm using a Yaesu FTM-400DR
I think I mis read your question. The head unit I've got in the jeep is a Sony XAV-100. It's not a GPS unit. I use apple CarPlay to use the gps in my phone and control it from the head unit.
I can't tell exactly what year your Jeep is, but an accessory that I have in my JK is the Vector Offroad E-dock. Yeah, it is a pricey unit for what it is, but it is a quality, made in the USA piece of equipment. Install is quick and painless and using Ram mounts or 67 Designs mounts you can mount pretty much anything to it and it gives a clean install without using adhesive tapes or drilling holes in the dash. Here is a link to the 2007-2010 model JK version (if you have a different year you can navigate around their site to find the one that works for you). BTW White Jeeps are the best! 73's. vectoroffroad.com/collections/jk-wrangler-products/products/jke-dock-2007-2010
If you're trying to use the USB cable that came with the FT2DR to program the radio then you will never get the drivers to load. The problem is the USB cable is for upgrading firmware only and you have to buy a seperate cable to use for programing or use a micro SD card. Big fail on Yaesus part for this radio. For the price they really should provide a cable you can program with. Even though I got mine for $300 it still pisses me off that they didn't provide a programing cable.
ohhhh nice and clean installation!!! I'm too lazy so buy a underseat plate to carry activesubwoofer or ampli and place my radio blackbox and put the display in a plate that was originally developed for carry phone in the dash Great, the only concern about all radio I have place in my car are about audio or internal speaker so in my JK U I've add a (4) uniden/mopar jeep speaker JPCBSJI (name like this a very stylish n cool stuff can place everywhere) for my icom706mkiig/tmd700(2 speakers)/uniden980ssb... a lot I know but 2 in front dash 2 in speaker bar rear my headrest so I can understand from what radio come the voice too much? maybe but I like it 73 de IZ3QVB
A-men!
Yaesu for the beginner is a PAIN!!! I did it and it had to many menus . It was gone in two days after I purchased.
Strange you have Fusion in the Jeep but carry Kenwood TH-74 with D-Star.. I know it's hard to choose, I have both Fusion and D-Star in the shack but only D-Star in the truck.
I picked the Fusion Radio for the Jeep because it has a smaller (than the ID-5100) color screen, does APRS, and is a duel band radio. I really like the fact that the soft buttons are fully user configurable too. When Kenwood releases a mobile version of the D74, It'll definitely get the spot in my Jeep.
I have a Icom 7100 that I will install in my truck to replace the Icom 706, I have it mounted under the rear seat in my Dodge 2500 4x4 Diesel. I also got the Tarheel antenna for the low band side " www.tarheelantennas.com/home " Places I go hunting only the HF will work, VHF/UHF and Cellphone don't. Sometimes I wish I had a Jeep but, the truck pulls my toyhauler and has gone everywhere I pointed the hood. I tell the wife when I am out don't worry, I might have to call back east for help and give my GPS coordinance for a helicopter. Nice thing is, no phone calls.... I like you Jeep, nice install.
It really isn't fair to blame Yeasu for VMWare issues. If they only advertised compatibility with Windows you can't assume the software will work in a VM. most of these DMR radios are using a simple serial interface over USB. Yeasu must be doing something lower level with their drivers that requires a direct interface with the hardware, which you don't get when you're running a virtual machine within a different OS. Maybe they do it for speed, maybe the do it so you don't have to worry about COM port numbers, who knows. Regardless, it sounds like the radio had plenty of other issues and that's a real shame. WIRES constantly gets touted as the easiest digital mode, hate to hear the implementation is poor in their flagship handheld. That mobile looks really nice but a handheld is so much easier to get started on. Yeasu really needed a user friendly product here.
wheres the mic?
I put a three foot extension cable to on the mic and ran it up under the center console.
Not Yaesu's issue. It's a Windows issue. Yaesu software does not know if you are running a VM or not. Don't blame Yaesu.
then how would you explain how most other drivers load right up?
I agree, My FT1XD is useless and I call Gigaparts to use the extended warranty for repairs but they said to send it to Yaesu! I will be getting an Icom 51A in the near future Period! WTF Yaesu and Yes I value my money earned the Hard Way with blood and Tears. OORAH de WV1Q
Should buy and american truck and a pc..haha
I have a Dodge P/U and hate windows PCs. 50% ain't bad.
K6UDA haha dodge is fiat
Dave Vick if your american buy american and support your own
Is there an American car where every part in it is totally made in the U.S.A.?
No, there is no car or light truck on the market that has every part made in the USA. Many American cars are even assembled in Canada and Mexico.
Honda and Toyota have cars that are assembled in the US that may have more US made parts than many “American” cars.
You're vs. your.
Omg talk less.
I have lost all respect for Jeep vehicles and the brand due to how many icy broke down on the side of the road especially in winter months.
Yaesu needs to learn menu design. Your ergonomics for menu design absolutely sucks.
If you did less talking and more showing it might have been a good video.
