I like to rest my wrist on something while I control my radio, I also like to have my radio in sight with the windshield so my eyes are always on the road.
For years I ran mine up on the dashboard and kept a baseball cap over it when not in use
A sheet of ABS plastic or Kydex, is easily cut, and even moldable with heat. Which makes a great material for custom car audio & radio instalations.
But you install looks pretty good!
RE: gluing the mount to the back of the face unit: I would have attached a piece of a paint stick (or similar) using those 2 small screw holes then gluing your mount to that.
Good idea!
HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I didn't get to see it operating from the drivers perspective!!!!!! Loved the video though but was REALLY looking forward to see you use it once mounted!
Nice. I have a 4100 I am thinking of mounting in my truck . Putting it up high would hide the head from the Florida sun.
I used a CD cellphone mount. Stuck the piece of metal to the back of the radio head. I zip tied the microphone cable to the mount to keep from yanking the radio head from the magnetic mount. Works great!
Nice!
Hi Rob,
Nice install. On my Ford Fusion, they have notches molded into the console lip so wires would not get pinched when closing the lid. You and the family stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Nice Job, I just mounted a Yaesu FTM-300D in my 2020 Ram 2500 with the body under the drivers dash the head above the mirror with a Lido mount and it works and looks great. Hope it works well for you.
Seems that as time goes by, finding a good place to mount a radio in any car is becoming increasingly difficult.
Very clean!
Nice install, not compromising the mechanics of the car interior and the small hole forward in the center console with a grommet isn't bad either,
Great radio, I have 2 of them! Good job on install. I simply bought a Schoshe mag mount for the dash. Works well. 73, K8JLW
Nice install! Have 2 radio's (ICOM IC-2720 & Yaesu FTM-100DR) mounted in my 2011 Tahoe as well. Used Proclipusa items since it is more specify for that vehicle. 73, K2BRT
Thanks for the video! I have thought about a mobile rig as well! The console is also a good idea for the base. Mine has a power outlet as well! Thanks again!
Sometimes our most head scratching monumental obstacle only needs an Elmer with a well made video. 73's to ya. KJ5ATV
I just discovered your channel after having ordered an IC 2730 today. Looking for options for mounting the control head. Just curious, how is that glass mount holding up to the heat from the sun?
Its been working out fine and is still there today
So after two years with this radio are you still using it for mobile use and would you stay with this radio or use something different? Thanks for the video.
I use this radio several times a week - it is still mounted in my car. I really like this radio a lot. It doesn't have all the features other radios have but if you just want a good analog/fm radio I strongly recommend this one.
@@SevenFortyOne Thank you sir. There's nothing like getting a real opinion from someone who has actually used a product. In this case this radio. I appreciate your response.
I've recently taken receipt of my ICOM 2730A and have encountered same issue with remote head having no bracket so I am going to try out a 360 degree mobile phone holster with velcro strips attached to both my remote head backing and holster cradle I'm hoping the mobile phone holster will stick into place on the dash otherwise double sided tape will be used to make sure its secured
Update: I have successfully installed 2730A into my rav 4 and have remote head sitting in a mobile phone holster using velcro strips secured to the top of dashboard I had to repivot it as original position caused holster to become unstuck due to uneven weight distribution but now its on a level heading and firmly secured
Have you had any issues with heat with the radios in the console? Are you leaving it open when you use it?
No and no....it seems to not get hot
What gauge wire is the wire that is connected to the mobile radio (ICOM 2730A)?
I don't remember now but it's the stock power cord that comes with the radio so probably 14ga or 16ga
@@SevenFortyOne Will it damage the radio if I use 12ga wire to run from the radio connection to the battery?
@@BlackHamRadioUniversity 12ga is better (thicker) than what comes with the radio so you shouldn't have any problems
I want to use a hands-free mic (HM-249) and that plugs into the radio body, so the hand mic (which my passenger will use) has to be plugged into the control head (I'm using the older 2725) so this particular installation wouldn't work for me. I drive a Buick Encore and the radio is under the passenger seat, trouble is routing cables isn't easy in this car as I can't get everything where I want it, so I'm going to have to do some more thinking.
Good video Rob, one thing though, can you use the sun visor with the head unit where it is ?
Yeah, it works. I can't push it all the way back but it's fine.
Hi. Buy the same equipment. I have a problem. When you press the microphone button to transmit, the display changes to OFF. Do you have any idea how to fix it? Greetings
It sounds like you are trying to transmit out of band. Check the frequency you have programmed and make sure it's correct
I’ve been thinking about putting one of these radios in my van but there’s no activity on the repeaters here. Why I don’t know lol.
I always encourage people who tell me there is no activity in their area to grab a buddy and start getting on the air. Once people hear YOU talking they will join in and you'll have some activity...
Can you help me with my anytime 780 I have tried everything I can’t get it to transmit
I was told that I should use a 12 or 10 Gauge wire cable to connect the ICOM 2730A to the battery. I know the wire that comes with the radio is a 14 gauge wire. Did you switch it out to a 10 or 12 gauge wire or did you keep the 14 gauge wire that came with the radio?
I used the wire that came with the radio
What antenna do you have on that car. I like it. Is it good ? fact is, I do not have a bull bar, so looking at alternatives. Other question: before you mounted the 2730 in the car, did you exchange the noisy fan ?
My antenna is a diamond dual bander. I have a video about it on my channel. I didn't change the fan on the icom
You could have showed us it working while behind the the drivers wheel or going down the road.
I have this radio it's a great analog radio has weather alerts and am airband receive
Excellent video
Thanks!
Nice install!
I need to get me a decent 2 meter , maybe even a dual bander in my Jeep . You’re gonna make me end up spending some money 🤦🏼♂️. Great setup , very clean installation. Did you take out the McKinley CB for good ?
I really like this icom...it works well. I'll put the McKinley back in at some point
@@SevenFortyOne
Are you up really early or up waaaay late lol
I keep 3rd shift hours cause I’m on 3rd shift again the last 6 weeks , 5p to 5a , Monday through Friday.
I start work at 5:30 am every day. I find I get more done before 8:30 when the boss starts then I do the rest of the day
much better and safer!👍
3M double sided tape would work instead of epoxy. Just clean the surface with alcohol first.
Nice and neat! 73 de K2CJB
