- In this video I am restoring a vintage kenwood Chef mixer to it's former glory. As far as I could ascertain this machine was made in the 60's. It is now in regular use again and as good as the day it came out the box.

Oh, that is beautiful! I'm still using my Mom's Kenwood Chef that she purchased in the late 1960s. It was purchased through Sunrise Industries in Toronto, Canada (I live in Nova Scotia). I never thought of it as being vintage, but I guess that's exactly what it is! Works like a charm!

Great work. It truly looks like new. I have a KM201 that needs plastic case repairs and missing cover plates and that is proving to be a challenge for me.
By the way, you wouldn't last 10 minutes at my office if that crop duster bothers you. I have a media helicopter that lands 10 metres outside my office window. Coming and going. All day.
My Kenwood Chef 701A is just the most wonderful machine and it has been in constant use since 1971. However last week it suddenly made some strange noises and the outside casing was very hot to touch. I turned it off and did wonder if I had just used it for the last time. My husband and I watched your video and decided we would give it a try ...Yes, we did it, thanks to you. Our machine is up and running again. The grease in the gearbox which obviously had never been changed, there was some empty spots but also solid in places. Cleaned and re greased and runs like new...Thank you so much for you instructional video.

Hi i to have a Kenwood KM200 and i am in the process of replacing the the electrical components. Your kenwood A700A is really clean and like new well done. The only thing i would use is a suger soap to clean of the grease parts its good on plastic and bright it up. Hi from IRELAND 🇮🇪
Excellent video - good clear audio and attention to detail as you disassembled and reassembled after refurb. Wish you had run it though would like to hear how loud it is.
If you ever have to get into the gearbox to replace the grease or change the brushes out please do another video. That was very sweet of you to redo it for your wife.

3 years ago I watched this and it fascinated me. However mine is a hobby turned into a business. My mentor is Mike Stratton from the UK and since then I started to refurbish and overhaul Kenwood Chefs.
However I focus on the 1950's A700 models right up to the KM range. And we do restore or replace the speed control circuit boards. But the Britsh machines, over engineered, will last forever. Sadly not the Chinese models. I do not touch them.

Shame you are not nearby. My kenwood major 707A bought in 1974 has started doing the fast speed on all settings so I am looking for someone who could repair it but it is not easy! I am not getting rid of it under any circumstances! I am not impressed with the new ones, they look so flimsy!
Hello Sir, I therefore allowed myself to contact you because I have a Kenwood chef A701A and it has just broken down. When I press the blue button on the speed variator it starts normally at all speeds (constant increase in speed) and the more I turn it the faster it goes. Only when I put the sheet or the hook with a preparation inside it leaves timidly and stops immediately turning although the engine is still very audible. I think he no longer has the strength to train the accessories. I started to disassemble it because I was thinking of a problem with the strap on the top but it looks in good condition. Before dismantling everything, could you help me by giving me some tips on the breakdown. Hope you can help me thank you in advance. cordially

Hi, my kenwood KMC570 has a burst of speed at speed 3 and i always have to turn the speed dial very slowly to avoid or get out of the speed burst. is this normal?
Good but how do you get it to bits?
I have one like that also. It gets very hot when running for 15 mins. I was thinking that it might need lube in the gear. Do you know about that? or why it gets very hot (you cannot touch it)
The k-shaped stirrer (English is not my first language, sorry) won't lock in properly. It looks to have all its bits and pieces comparing to the other parts. The sort cross bar that engages with the holder is quite close to the big hex nut though. Any ideas? Much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Cheers

Hi. I have taken apart my Kenwood Major. Is there a trick to putting the main hinge pin back in? Having trouble with the spring pressure... Also: where can I get the clip/washer that holds the spring on the release button/pin in place? It broke on disassembly... It's the one that goes into the groove on the pin. Thanks.
Hi there, I have a similar mixer and the speed dial was not working unless it was being pushed in, which it wasnt doing previously. I took the speed dial off and am now having issues putting it back on. Do you have any suggestions for this. Thanks

Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I just bought a 1960s Kenwood A701A on ebay and am waiting for it to arrive. Its going to be my first kenwood restoration project (I've restored a few vintage Singer sewing machines and a 1970s Hoover before). My question relates to testing the motor. Sadly, although the hoover I restored was working when I bought it...after all my hard work, the motor went a week after I restored it. Just wondering if there is any way I can fully test the Kenwood motor (other then leaving it run at full speed for a few minutes)...just trying to avoid the same problem. cant really find many online resources!Thanks again for your video! Think these are 70s, my granny’s is spilling what looks like oily grease out the back and smells of burning, any ideas?
Hi there, great video you have done such a beautiful job! I have just bought one at auction, my main problem is the smell! It was not well cared for and is incredibly greasy and smelly, I want to strip it and clean it to try and get rid of the stench, can I clean all internal parts with thinners or metholated spirits? Also the attachments are tarnished / rusted,do you know what would get this off? Also the piece of felt in mine is equally disgusting, can this be cleaned or shall I get a new one? Any advice so appreciated!
Methylated spirits: yes - it is akin to IPA or denatured alcohol and commonly used for cleaning electronics and should easily wipe away grease.
Thinners: No - not unless you know exactly what is in them and know they wont damage existing paint work and/or electronics.
Which painter thinner did you use? I tried using white spirit, and it did absolutely nothing to remove the old paint.
I used laquer thinners.

I used laquer thinners bit pretty sure paintstripper will work just as well.

I used laquer thinners. Worked like a charm.
How did you polish the plastic components - Silver polish?
John Francis Yes. It is stock standard silver polish. The brass polish works as well. Even toothpaste will do the trick.
These fabulous mixers got an achilles heel when they had nylon input and planetery cogs. Working in a greasy enviroment these gears got brittle and split working under heavy loads.. Even the alloy ones could do the same when regularly kneading bread dough. I dont believe they were ever made with hardened steel. An ideal choice for the torques they had to deal with. Sadly because of this that clumsy and awkward Kitchen Aid thing so much featured by TV chefs has won over. Now Kenwood have sold out to the form over function brigade and style there mixers the same way. Ive used both in a small cafe and my 70s 701always won!!!
Arguably the nylon gears were a good idea as they serve as a "fuse", preventing the whole gearbox being wrecked if the machine is overloaded/overworked. Which is fine as long as you're able to fix it (or find someone who can do it)! These machines were primarily designed for domestic mixing/whisking tasks and, in the era of the A701A, the dough hook was sold as an optional accessory.

Looks fantastic! Is that a 701? Would the more modern 901 have the same metal body construction?
Also, could you write down the paint used, as I'm not familiar enough with the brand to pick up from audio alone!

Patrik Floding I am not sure about the 901. I use Rustoleum Painters Touch Double Cover for all my projects. I used the semi gloss for the mixer.
The pedestal and middle section of the 901 are cast aluminium alloy, just like the 701, but the top cover in almost all cases is plastic.
Hi what kind of paint is the one you use?
i live in argentina so teh brand you use is not available, but if i knew what kind of paint it is, maybe i can find it.
I use Rustoleum Double Cover Satin. Any good quality spray paint will work.

Brake fluid works well on objects you can rinse with water. Or buy a can of paint stripper

I have recently inherited a chef and I don't know how to change from rear blender to the front mixer!
Hope you have worked it out by now. Take the blender off, place a beater in and switch it on.

My mum had one circa 1970's -- a noisy piece of crap - HA - probably did what my mum wanted - but from day one - it was so noisy us kids in the lounge room watching TV had to give up listening to the cartoons when mum used it - HA - I am sure it damaged her hearing. Yes, I do. His name is Eugene, and he lives on that street adjacent to the mall, the one with all the bi-level shrubbery. Go an see him, and say that Archibald Scuttlesworth sent you. You'll also need to know the special handshake, or he won't let you in. Firmly grasp his left hand, and whist shaking use your index finger to poke at his palm, while repeating "MMMMMMMMMMM, that's the spirit!". He's a fast worker, highly qualified, good prices, with a (barely noticeable) hygiene problem.
The paint job looks really nice. What is the paint you used and did you need to use a primer?
Also it would be good to see the restored machine in action ;-)
Hi Benjamin. I used Rustoleum Painter's Touch Semi Gloss. The machine ran into a bit of trouble. I need to get a new star lock washer when I go into the city again. I will do an update once it's all sorted.
@@EmileTheart did you get this sorted in the end? A starlock washer for a 5 mm diameter shaft is perfect for the hub gear.

Just lubricated the bearings. Brushes was still good.

Sorry I'm a bit confused about which paint was used. You mentioned a couple of coats of Hammerite smooth. Then a top coat of Rust-oleum Ultra Cover. Was that lacquer or did you change your mind about the Hammerite and use the Ultra Cover as a top coat? Thanks for the helpful video.
Alan Macraild HI Alan, I started off with Hamer items but it kept making drips no matter how hard I tried. I eventually switched to Rustoleum . Worked so much better. Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense now. Can I also ask what brand of lacquer thinners you used and where you got it? It looks very effective and I'm having trouble sourcing a good product on line. Incidentally, I live in Scotland.

Oh dear, you already have it in pieces. The "planet hub" on my machine is cracked right across. I unscrewed that central screw hoping it would come out but it it firmly fixed in place. I don't want to try forcing it because I don't know if it is fixed to something else. Is there anyone on this thread who can tell me how to get the hub off and how to replace it with the spare part.
