Wow. I have seen a lot of the Kenny videos but have only just found this one. I've never taken apart something like this and am not sure I want to start with my precious A701A so am getting someone else to do it for me, but this really makes me want to find a 'dead' A701A to play with. Thank you so very much.

Great video! Just changed the grease in my Kenwood and it works perfectly now.
Motor lubricated and gears greased. One shim missing but most probably been missing for the last forty years or more, the last I delved inside the machine. Thanks for the very clear video and instructions.

Just in progress of doing this for one I got for steal at a thrift shop, that was also making guite horrible noises. Turns out the old grease had hardened enough to definitely hinder the movement more than help 🤣.
Well I say it was a steal but I still ended up spending about 150€ for parts to refurbish it, not that it needed all of that but it's nice make it look like it's brand new. Even got a stainless steel bowl, makes it look real sharp compared to that old plastic one!

Any one that needs to know a grease for the gearinthat is close to what was used is
Q8 OILS REMBRANDT EPT2
This is a lithuim grease,high temp and pressure grease and great against rust,
Not food grade,but this is going into the area wear it will not reach your food,

Kenny my gearbox at take apart had no bushing washers at all maybe there was a variation without ? ive tried different washers but there all to thick i may need a shim washer or just a washer on the bottom of the gears not on top and bottom...thoughts appreciated... Australia
Got to strip and repaint mine as the bottom edge is chipped and oxidised so may as well give it an overhaul too.

Nice video, I have an A702 that seems to be identical. Exceptional music for the "Grease Spewing" scene! My machine runs, but the Planet hub won't turn. When I began the dismantling process, the Dog Clutch cog fell out and I believe that may be the culprit; however; all that happens in the video is you turning it. I need more...... Thanks

Presumably you could access the two screws under the white plastic wheel through the holes in the wheel. My gearbox has a solid aluminium wheel with no access holes, so you have to remove it first. To do so put a spanner on the nut that has a coiled spring pushing down on the wheel and give it a sharp tap with a hammer. A bit like removing a drill chuck.

Hello Xenon I appear to own a major series Kenwood quite similar to yours and im looking to adjust the beater height, as mine is far from reaching the bottom of the bowl. I want to reduce the play in here. Instructions tells me about using a spanner on top of the beater. I cannot manage for the love of anything sacred to figure out what they are talking about. Could you help me find this adjustment?
There is a threaded bar that fits in to the mixer, there is also a ring with two flat sides, this is the nut which you need a spanned to undo. You can see a whisk in pieces here..

Kenwood 7010A: Done my gearbox, all is ok! Except I have a hard board washer 25mm/1inch in dia. I forgot where I took it out from..

I tried to adjust the speed for mixing as shown in the video by screwing the two screws up and down with no avail. The speed still running fast, do I need to change condenser or something else? Where can I have more information? Can anyone help. Appreciate

Hi, I have followed the video. Did a dry assembly all OK. I have now put the grease in and its difficult to turn by hand. Is that normal? Or do I need to start again as I'm relectant to put the sealant on if this is going to need sorting. Many thanks in advance
It will be harder to turn as you will be pushing all the grease around inside. As long as it does turn smoothly (no clicking or jamming) then it should be ok.
Very helpful video. Just got a Blakeslee A717, which is an identical variant to the Kenwood A717, with a gearbox identical to your model. It was leaking oil through the planetary so the first task was to replace the old grease, which was in far worse shape than yours, and very smelly. It seems to be a very strong machine so I'm looking forward to getting it going after I'm finished greasing. I also recently replaced the grease in an old KitchenAid and it looks like you used the same variety so I'll do the same but for the silicone, did you use a normal household type or is there a certain kind to use?
To be honest, the gearbox grease was not very old. I had changed it a few previously before I had the idea to do the vids. The original grease was a bit nasty smelling and the stuff around the edges was rather hard too.
xenon53827 My grease was about the consistency and color of chocolate syrup, and hard around the edges of the gears with dry, flaky bits underneath those. Long overdue

Hello. Are the new Titanium mixers as good as these older ones? I know that the company has been sold and that the mixers are now made in China. After reading some eye-opening bad reviews about KitchenAid mixers (especially the tilt-heads with plastic gears), I was wondering if I would be better off with a new Titanium Chef. Thank you!

Hello! very useful video thank you. I have a problem with my A701A .. the bit that you push the whisk or k beater into in the planetary hub just dropped out with the k beater... will slide back in but there's no drive to it... is this fixable..? many thanks and best wishes Martin
Freeze the video at 9:34 and you will see that the beater cog wheel is held in by a pressure fit washer. Undo the centre nut iof the planet hub and remove it, then reassemble and you should need a tool of a section of pipe even, to push this washer on. If it just slips on and off, then the tabs need to be straightened a tiny bit. This will make it tighter but you may need something that fit in the edge of the washer and tap it on with a small hammer. These can be a bit of a task.

Inside the white plastic cog wheel is in two pieces so that must be the problem, I will now try and source a replacement. Thanks very much indeed, this will bring an old treasure back to life! How do I remove screws under the spindle
The dreaded uneven running at low speeds. I've cleaned all contacts. Changed the resistors etc, but still running uneven. The last tip I have read is to take out any play in the speed adjustment end of the rotor shaft.There is less than a millimeter play but I want to remove that play. But I can't remove the grub screw holding the fan onto the shaft. It's stuck fast. Any tips?
Hi Ron, due to the pulsing effect from the motor contacts, the motor will sound uneven below about number 2 as in the motor lubrication video, ruclips.net/video/K-kQksmITZU/видео.html or are you having definite periods of slowing down, in which case you may need new motor bearings?

Do you use normal LM grease, or white food grade grease?
Usually LM grease in the gearbox, but you can use food grade in the planetary hub which does not need to be packed full unlike the gearbox.

What kind of material are the gray gears made of? Aluminium or plastic? What kind of grease (base and grade) are you using?
Also, I was wondering - Please correct me if I'm wrong - But I'm concerned by how much grease you used, aren't you worried it will overheat and rob a significant amount of power? Also, seeing how much silicone squeezed out, I can't help but wonder if some will have squeezed into the gearbox and mixed in with the grease...

From what i can tell, the Grey gears are an aluminium alloy. The gearbox was designed to be totally filled with grease, this ensures that the grease is always doing it's job. If there is more than a small amount of air, then the gears can 'throw' the grease and thus loose lubrication. The motor is designed to cope with this. When first starting the mixer after filling, Kenwood mention that any excess will be pushed out of the juice extractor outlet. VERY IMPORTANT - check that the rubber feet are still leaving a gap between the bottom casting and the work surface as this is essential for the motor to pull in air for cooling. If the rubber feet have rotted, then these really MUST be replaced (easily obtained form ebay and other sources for little cost).
The silicone, some will have squeezed into the gear box. It's a fine line between too much and not enough, but you have to ensure that it is sealed all the way around. Any left in the gearbox will be too little to have any real effect on the lubrication. If in doubt, try sealing the empty gearbox and open it again, to see how much has ended up inside and adjust as necessary.
I used standard Lithium based grease. People do mention about food grade grease, but that is best used on the planetary hub. There is pretty much no way that the gearbox grease will find it's way into the bowl.

Thanks for the clarification - If the service manual says that's the way to do it and that any excess would come out by the juicer port, it sure makes a lot of sense :-)

Hi, what silicone did you use on the gearbox casing? I am getting some silicone based instant gasket from Halfords for £3.99, as I've used it numerous times over the years for sealing aluminium casings. I did get some silicone sent to me but it's the cheapest stuff on the market and I know from experience cheap silicones shrink, so just curious as to what type you have used.
I just got a small tube from halfords. the stuff was white.
@@xenon53827 Thats great, it's what I've used for years on motorbikes so it makes sense to use it on these casings. Just got an A901, the seller seemed to think the planetary hub cog had broke with me thinking it must be a plastic one, but it turned out to be a destroyed gearbox case, as I took the hub off two lumps of casing fell out and the D hole in the hub was rounded out, so there's a lot of torque in these machines to do that. Just paid £40 for a gearbox from a workshop clearance, looks like it could have been overhauled but I'll open it and check the grease and shims for peace of mind.
@@fdghn4567 A previous owner may have tightened the front on the mincer attachment too much. That really needs power to run.
Managed fine until it came to reassembling the plastic gear wheel that drives the liquidiser. Could not see how to screw the nut on to the spindle. Hope someone can advise.

How do you remove the cogs wheel from the gear box please?
They just usually pull straight out, except for the wheel with two holes in at the back which does not really need to come out anyway. If the old grease is very thick, then yop may need to try turning as you pull upwards.

Try pushing the little button down with a chop stick or similar.

Just lithium based grease.

You turn the wheel, and the screws can be access through the holes in it. It is not necessary to remove the wheel.

Mine is an alloy wheel. i just drilled a hole in it and that did the trick. though it mights of pulled off. just the one in the video is plastic.
Another option is to remove the planet hub assembly and hold the protruding D-shaped shaft with an adjustable spanner whilst unscrewing the clutch dog with another spanner. The spring and drive gear can then be removed. If it is a metal gear there should also be a Paxolin washer on the top of the gearbox.

Hello Kenny. A901 has been working fine after following you excellent video, except for the clunking at low speed, which I believe is common on the old models, so I'll live with it. My problem is that the mixer blades do not spin? The planetary movement is OK. Could it be due to overloading? I was mixing the recommended maximum bread dough when it objected Any Tips before I strip it down again and worse, get rid of the new grease I put in? Many thanks.
Check for wear inside the planetary hub, either the outside teeth 9:30 or the cog wheel. You can get the parts, but the large ring of teeth are riveted, so can be a little tricky to replace.

One thing you don't show is adjustment of the beater height in the bowl?
True, well unscrew the nut a turn or two, screw in the shaft and then put it on the Kenwood, lower head carefully until catch clicks. If tool touches the bowl first, then screw shaft in until it clears.
Next, hold the shaft and unscrew the tool until it touches the bowl. screw the tool in a fraction of a turn so it just misses the bowl and making sure the tool and shaft stay put, tighten the nut finger tight, and then remove the tool and carefully tighten the nut up. May take a little practice at first.

ALSO... (I forgot to add) If you change between stainless steel, glass or Kenlite bowls, you should adjust the tools due to the different bowl thickness.

Hello Sir, I was very interested in your video on youtube regarding the repair of the Kenwood A701a. So I allowed myself to contact you because I myself have an old Kenwood A701A and it has just broken down. When I press the blue button on the speed variator it starts normally at all speeds (constant increase in speed) and the more I turn it the faster it goes. Only when I put the sheet or the hook with a preparation inside it leaves timidly and stops immediately turning although the engine is still very audible. I think he no longer has the strength to train the accessories. I started to disassemble it because I was thinking of a problem with the strap on the top but it looks in good condition. Before dismantling everything, could you help me by giving me some tips on the breakdown. Hope you can help me thank you in advance. cordially
This sounds like it may be a problem in the gearbox assembly. With the top cover removed turn the plastic gearwheel on the gearbox assembly while holding the beater. if you can turn the gearwheel without the beaters turning them the problems is almost certainly the gearbox assembly. In this case something in the assembly is worn out and you probably need to buy a whole new gearbox assembly.
Could also be the clutch not engaging properly. Remove back cover. There is a nylon pin on the front end and when the cover is fitted it presses down on the clutch. If it's worn away it would not engage the clutch. Motor will run but gears will not turn.
How much grease is needed, more or less?
at a guess, about 4 tablespoons.
I have a very old ice cream maker. Circa 1920. Worm gear driving a large brass gear. It's in great shape however I can't identify the grease. Can you respond with the Brand and Model of the honey colored grease used on your mixer. It's very similar to what I need. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be specific. A brand and whatever else that can identify that grease.
The stuff I used was a Lithium based grease. Generally brown and greasy... Not sure of the trade name, sorry.

Just got a Kenwood chef a701 at a yardsale for next to nothing in really good condition and just made my first baguettes using it. Do you think kenwoods new chef series made in china is gonna still work in 40 years? And the old machines were made with easy repairability in mind. All the new ones is just use until it breaks and throw away

What grease would you recommend?
Nowadays, people recommend food grade grease which is white, but it is very unlikely to leak out when done properly, so I used the usual brown lithium based grease. Kenwood used the brown stuff in these anyway.

Excellent demo, thanks! Just one question: what kind of grease do you use? Ordinary grease or a special variety, such as silicon? Is there a risk you might get traces of the grease in your food when using the machine?
the only place where you might see a smear of grease in the planet hub where the beater fits if it has too much in. The gearbox may initially push a little out of the juicer socket on top but otherwise they don't dump it in the food!
@@xenon53827 Thanks, xenon53827. I have another question😨 I followed your video and all went well except for one, important thing. On top of the plastic "drive wheel", the one connected to the motor with a drive belt, there is a sort of spring loaded release for the gear wheel that drives the gearbox. If it is depressed, the gear engages the other gears and all the drives work. When I start the machine, it works but after a short while, the spring loaded part pops up and then the gearbox is idle, it spins but nothing works. Too much grease in the gearbox? I haven't dismantled or done anything to the drive wheel. I hope you can understand what I mean, it was rather difficult to describe in English...
@@christerlundblad9986 The gear is held down by the lid that goes on the liquidiser at the back. if the peg is worn down, then the gearbox will stop. try pushing down on the front of the rear cover and see if it starts again.
The nylon shaft can be replaced if it has worn short.
