  • Today we’re talking about the intergenerational sock wars between Gen Z vs. Millennials. First they came after skinny jeans and side parts, now Gen Z wages war against millennial ankle socks/no shows in favor of crew socks.

Late Gen-X perspective here… the most iconic socks from my 80’s childhood were the “scrunch” socks that you wore with high-top sneakers. (L.A. Gear or Reebok were the BIG names.)

As a millenial, I had to stop wearing skinny jeans because I got too fat and then when I lost weight, got too muscular. Had to stop wearing no show socks because they wouldn't stay in place and would fall down your feet eventually. Honestly this is probably why those trends died... They weren't practical or comfortable and people just got sick of it.

No, you have lost weight, your reason why those socks sucks ad they glide off... buy new ones that fit maybe??? Weird ppl thinking their clothes will shrink or grow whatever their weight is that day. would be a nice invention tho

Teresa, Your posts never fail to put a smile on my face. Your wit, humor and word play is always enjoyable. And i'm NOT being sarcastic! You socked it to your audience with this episode, which hits the mark in both sillness and shallowness! (is that a word?) As a baby boomer (= ancient) I recall the day when there was just about one sock type to buy. I do buy a variety of types these days, though. Looking forward to future offbeat and entertaining shows.

I recently learnt about The Sock War as I realised I needed to buy a new pair of trainers. I've become very out of touch with trainer fashions so I've had to do a lot of research and try lots of different pairs on. I watched a few videos of Gen Z fitness women reviewing trainers and noticed they all wear those mid calf socks. When I was young that would have been considered incredibly uncool, it was a 'dad fashion.' I've realised that all the trends Millennials thought of as uncool, Gen Z have declared cool, as a way to differentiate themselves from us - ie they wear high waisted, short trousers (both fashion crimes in the 90s and early 2000s), gold jewellery even when they have pale cool toned skin (a look which was considered chavvy back in the day). They also wear cycling shorts with socks pulled up, big clompy trainers, often have unusual haircuts all of which were unacceptable to the fashion police back then.

I've been on the fence regarding using the three word style thingy from Alison Bornstein because I don't have the book and had issues coming up with the third, emotional, word. I was going to go for rebellious, and in spite (ahem) of being a metalhead and all around curmudgeon it just didn't seem to fit because I'm also pretty classic and vanilla in appearance. However! Thank you for giving me my emotional style word: SPITE! I match my brown or black belts, shoes, bags. I match my hardware on a theme. My look is a low rise, skinny pant tucked into tall boots where the crew socks are hidden. Husband calls it the Han Solo and, well, Han was my first husband when I was 10 years old, so... I will wear and rock my look that I like just to spite any naysayers. High waists make my gut look like a front butt filled with jello, cropped pants make my rather short legs look way shorter. The best thing is a metal band tee, jeans and boots. (Gen X on the older side, and totally over it)

Older gen Z here, I personally don’t care what socks people are wearing. I also don’t care what style or hair people decide to have. As long as they are comfortable and love the way they look then that’s awesome. For me I personally love looking like I came straight out of the 80s even though I was never born in the 80s, currently rocking the big fluffy 80s hair and I get many compliments from older people (Usually gen X) and I usually get weird looks from people around my age. Though I usually don’t care rather they like it or not because it makes me happy. Honestly people shouldn’t be afraid to express themselves even after something goes out of style. Plus you never know when something would ever make a comeback in the future.

Thanks for a few laughs in such weird times! I guess my sock game has never been trendy - I went out of my way in high school (in the 90s) to get the primary color striped white athletic socks that were calf/knee high from the 70s/80s and definitely wore them not ironically. I can't recall exactly when it happened, but knee socks are my optimal sock. I do own shorter crew socks with fun designs or colors but my ideal sock is knee high or the slouchy socks that give that 80s look with skirts. The two socks which I will never understand are ankle and no show - the dammed things will never stay on my foot - only to be sucked up into the toe box of my shoes making me hate them with a passion. Crew socks are the bare minimum to resist the sliding of the socks down my foot but why get those when you can have knee socks? And of course white socks. There is no place for white socks.

Also, I noticed that your "cold open" was quite extended for this installment (4:15ish?). As an SNL fan, I quite enjoyed this. And while I've always been hooked by your production/editing as much as your content, I almost spilled my martini when I heard the audio treatment for "Sh*touttaluck" whereby the censoring beep and the questionable language essentially occupied the same sonic space. From a New York City manfan of indeterminate age and very determinate taste, I thank you for knocking my socks off.
