    Congratulations Megan! You're the first of the Canadian/American 'reactors' to react to these 'Polish Cafe' sketches, in spite of my recommending a number of times to various reactors I follow and their requests for more Harry Enfield sketches. Harry captures the 'middle-aged' man being impressed/infatuated with the young Eastern European women working in the cafe so well - and dare I say resonates close to home, having witnessed this first-hand. The mix of charm and bluntness of the women are beautifully portrayed here by Morwenna Banks, Laura Solon and Sophie Winkleman.

    Many years ago... An old friend of mine told me about the time he visited a Chinese Takeaway late one night... While he was on his way home from the pub... And after placing his order and paying for it in advance... He sat on a bench inside of the takeaway... And waited for his order to be ready... And while he was sat there minding his own business... He could hear the staff in the back speaking in Cantonese with one another... Lets just say that they were being quite unkind about some of the other customers that were in there... What they were totally unaware of... Is that my friend spoke several languages fluently... This was because of his job as an interpreter for foreign students at University... Languages he spoke fluently included... Cantonese... Mandarin... Japanese... And Korean... So when his order was finally ready... He calmly walked up to the counter... Grabbed his bagged up takeaway order... And speaking in fluent Cantonese... He gave them a piece of his mind... About their lack of respect towards some of the other customers... Before walking out of the door vowing never to return again... I would love to have been a fly on the wall to see the look on their shocked faces... Never assume you can't be understood when being unkind.

    I was once in a cafe in Old Street (London, UK) with similar staff. A socially awkward guy came in and started to talk to them, obviously a regular, and explained how he was playing in a musical theatre troupe rehearsing for The Sound of Music. The staff tried to be nice but the conversation became more and more stilted and awkward. Eventually, to fill an overly long silence, for some reason he just took a deep breath and started to sing Edelweiss. Each time he got tot he end of a chorus, he would stop laugh nervously and then begin the next. All the seated customers at this point mentally hid under their respective tables.

    Hi Meg. I enjoyed the video.😊
    I note your point about speaking in a language that is incomprehensible to someone else in the room.
    English people sometimes complain if they enter a pub or shop in a Welsh speaking area, and the locals continue speaking in their first language of Welsh.
    If you went into a shop in a French speaking area of Canada, how would you react if they carried on speaking French?
    Isn't it a bit anglocentric to expect everyone to adjust to your language?
    Just a thought..

    • @MeganRuth
      @MeganRuth  24 дня назад +2

      Hi Lee! That's not what I meant at all. I meant that if the person who doesn't speak the language is purposefully left out of the conversation by the people speaking the other language, then it's disrespectful. The person doesn't even have to be English. It would be the same if I purposefully left a Spanish speaker out of the conversation while talking to my English speaking friend.
