One of the best of all time, Dinah was noted for her gritty, high pitched voice that also featured crystal clear diction and bluesy phrasing. She was much admired for her talent by fellow singers and her many fans. Sadly, she led a troubled life and died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs at the far too young age of 39. Her performance of What a Difference a Day Makes is simply a masterpiece of swing and vocal control. Thanks Cynthia & Harri.
@@Cynthia... Another one lost too soon. Billie Holliday was another legend lead down the rocky path of constant performances and little rest. It's scandalous what one had to endure just to keep a name.
@@Cynthia... Fun fact: The Beatles recorded a version of September in the Rain on their audition tape for Decca Records in 1962. Paul took the lead vocal on it. I think it's a decent rendtion. They failed the audition, unfortunately. Wonder what ever happened to those boys.
One of the best Jazz vocalists, imo, with an unmistakable voice. A masterful recording, and another masterful request by Cynthia! It was a delight to watch & listen to your reaction Harri.
Cynthia - Yet another sparkling classic from Dinah Washington. I have not heard of this one for decades, and it still works fine. Very well done Cynthia and Harri.
Dinah did a great song called What a Difference a Day Makes. She's on video in the classic Jazz on a Summers Day at the Newport Jazz Festival circa 1958
From Dinah's 11th album, " September in the Rain" fom 1961, she was born Ruth Lee Jones. Such a beautiful singer who could belt out brassy blues, was one of Jazz's most versatile vocalist who sang sweet ballads, rollicking blues and middle of the line pop ballads. Her vocals in this song so appealing blending beautifully with orchestral backing. Too short as you say Harri. Sadly she died at 39 from an accidental mixture of diet pills and alcohol. Such a loss. 😢 Loved " What a Difference a Day Makes", a true classic. Great reaction Harri. ❤❤ Beautiful choice Cynthia. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada. ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
A wonderful song, the 50s are the era of jazz and rock'n'roll, I would like to have a time machine and go back to that time just to see and feel how people lived then for at least 5 minutes.
Dinah Washington was an American singer & pianist from the 40's-60's. She covered many genres including jazz, blues, R&B, & traditional pop music. She had a lot of great songs such as "What A Difference A Day Makes", "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Am I Asking Too Much", "Baby Get Lost", "I Wanna Be Loved", "Cold, Cold Heart", "Unforgettable" etc. She also did 2 great duets in 1960 with Brook Benton, "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)"& "A Rockin' Good Way (To Mess Around & Fall in Love)". Her last big hit was "September in the Rain" in 1961
Harri, pls check out Randy Crawford. Just to name a few of many songs. Who's crying now, Windmills of my mind, Almaz, with the late great Joe Sample on piano. You won't be disappointed.
Love your reaction to this legendary singer.
Another great choice Cynthia! Thanks for the double, Harri!
Thank you Anne. Love her voice.
One of my favorites!!
Dinah was a good friend of my dad's. One of his fav stories was how she cradled me for hours just after I was born. She died a month later.
That’s a very heartwarming but bittersweet story (as it didn’t end well for her 😢). Thanks for sharing it. 💐🌸

Remember this from my early childhhod !! Such a great tune, Love It.( PS...raining here already also in the mid US, and much cooler than normal,)
Wonderful song. Fantastic choice and awesome reaction. Thanks Harri and Cynthia 🌸✌️
Thank you Debbie. 💜
Cynthia always has amazing picks. Dinah was... everything. Great idea to do an instant replay, Harri. ("Dinah Was" is a stage play about her.)
@ahs1723 Thank you, what a nice thing to say.
@@Cynthia... I mean it, Cynthia! (It's Andrew-- I've lauded your choices before-- commenting from a different account.)
You are the man, Harri. Great choice Cynthia!
Thank you Uncle Phil. Nice to see you.
@@Cynthia... Back at ya! 😀
You must listen to her sing with Brook Benton - great duets!!!
You need more from Dinah! May I suggest "Easy Living"? It's breathtaking.
Thank you for the great reaction Harri. Too bad some of the old songs were so short as you just get into them and they are over.
@@Cynthia... I think Harri found a good solution to this issue, Cynthia 😄…just hit repeat 😉😍
@@iandowney4630 Yes I think he did Ian. 😂

You must get into much more of her song book. There are hundreds of songs just as good or even better than this one. She is one of the greats.

Her timbre reminds me a little of Billie Holiday
She learned from Billie and they became friends.
