Funny. First time I ever saw Hamlet, he was played by Jacobi. Now here Jacobi is playing Claudius. What a treat to listen to!

Very good. My fourth reading/ viewing of Hamlet and the first time I can say I have grasped this play. There is no madness in Hamlet. He is distraught only. He plays skillfully with each opponent usually one step ahead. I find myself sad at his death as Hamlet would have made a great king.
    Horatio his excellent second.

1:08:33 "Were you not sent for... hmmm?"
Possibly my favourite moment in this whole production. Branagh is just a master of this kind of subtlety.

there's the story of the woman in Victorian times who finally saw "Hamlet" on stage and said of it: "Why it was just a bunch of famous quotes!"

Branagh is a fine actor, but he's somehow too wholesome for the part.

Who did it better? In my opinion only Olivier could compete. Mel Gibson gave a damn good attempt also I think. I liked Cumberbatch give it a go too. An actor on screen or with microphone can play with many more subtleties than a stage player using vocal projection.

Check out the Richard Burton NY stage play. Recording is not brilliant but Burton is fantastic.

Too wholesome? That is an unusual criticism in this case . I have a Naxos audiobook with Ken as Richard III 😂
Now, THAT is what I call a challenge for his "wholesomeness" !
