For anyone who doesn't know, you can do this with romaine lettuce also, I've had romaine lettuce heads last over 2 even 3 months in the crisper like this.

My mother-in-law taught me to wrap store-bought vegetables in clean newspapers and shopping bags. For almost thirty years this has been a time-tested method for me to keep produce fresher longer in the fridge.

I vaguely remember my mom wrapping cucumbers in newspaper and storing them in our root cellar (which, as a kid, I thought was dumb). I didn't like cucumbers when I was younger, but I love them now. Susan, I'll have to try this next year, thanks for sharing this! ~Margie

Our garden is just now coming on, we didn't really get the garden planted until late May, but wow the peas, the beans, and cucumbers are coming on strong. Today alone we picked over a hundred cucumbers. I gave 70% of them away and decided to pickle my first batch of dill pickles today. I was wondering how best to store them over night. Your video was just what I needed. Thank you! So much is coming on all at once, raspberries, apricots now also. Last year the frost destroyed all our fruit - this year a bumper crop!

hi Susan, I have done this myself and it works wonders. I do the same with a punnet of mushrooms that goes off covered with the plastic wrap from the shops, so as soon as I get home, I open up the plastic container and wrap the mushrooms in paper towel and pop them back into the container and they last for ages in the fridge. I do the same for cucumbers and whole heads of lettuce and it does last much longer.

I've used a similar method for storing sweet corn (don't peel them - keep the husks on - stored in the fridge in a plastic bag) but never thought of doing the same for cucumbers. I like the idea of wrapping in dry paper towel as it would soak up any moisture than escapes and stops them going soggy. Thanks for sharing!!!

Brown paper bags maybe given out if needed at some stores. I would guess it's due to the heat and that as long as they recover, they're OK. Perhaps you need to increase the amount of time they're getting watered in the morning, though.
