Thanks Emma for this! FTM here and my baby is currently 5 months. I often feel that I'm giving her toys ahead of her age, so I'm glad you made this video. Any sort of comprehensive "toy guide" from newborn to 2 years of age? Do you also have a content regarding "screen time"? My baby loves watching TV but she prefers shows like CSI, instead of animated shows. I really want to prevent any developmental delay, because this baby was a decade in the making. I'm also wondering if there are toys that sorta one size fits all, like something that would be useful for a long time, as you know, clutter is building up! Watching from the Philippines, btw!
It’s not technically a toy, but my baby loves our silicone toy straps. They’re for securing toys to the stroller, car seat, etc. I love attaching the o ball to it so it doesn’t roll away. She will often get bored of the toy on the strap, and just chew on the strap. From six months of age and beyond, as my baby is six months, baby led weaning seems to further be developing her fine motor development already. After just a few weeks, she’s been picking up smaller bits of food occasionally.
Thank you for your videos, I have a three months old baby boy, and your videos helped a lot with him. It was a challenge to get that ball here in Hungary, it is not that popular, but I found it and he loves to play with it.
Totally agree with the Oball, it's my personal favourite for very young babies. However I don't agree with a dangling play gym, I think this contributes to flat head as it encourages baby to only look up. Just a play mat on the floor is sufficient with toys on the floor surrounding baby. This encourages baby to turn their head from side to side .
Thanks for sharing! When you place the toys on the baby gym to the side it encourages the bub to look to the side. Also in the newborn stage their head automatically falls to the side (due to weak neck muscles) and it isn't until 3 month of age they can hold their head in the midline. So what's really important to prevent flat spots developing is positioning of the toy or the interesting person to either side of the bub to encourage bub to turn the head in both directions.

Hi Emma, thank you for this. I have a 10 week old and while his visual skills are great, his fists are constantly clenched, so he rarely gets to touch anything other than our hands and skin. Yesterday was probably the first time he opened his hands when we offered a brightly coloured ball, but it didn't last long. I keep touching his hands with different textures but he's definitely not interested in holding things, let alone reach out for them yet. I wondered what your thoughts were on closed fists.
My almost-10-week old hasn't shown any interest in the O-ball YET but I have this self-standing baby mirror with a little toy at the bottom, it's a ball that rattles when spun, and she LOVES that. (Funny enough, she does not care at all about the mirror itself) If I hold her in sitting (she can hold her head steady), she will actively reach out and hit that toy! She doesn't really try to reach for toys while lying on her back though, only while sitting (whether assisted sitting or putting some dangling toys in the car seat). Is she still considered as meeting the milestones for reaching and hitting toys if she's sitting, even though that's likely an easier motion than while lying down? Thank you from Texas, USA! Hi Maria! Congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope you are feeling well! I would say it is best just to get one set of each of these toys and let your little ones share. It can be overwhelming for babies to have too many toys out all at once which might be the case if you get two of each toy.
Hi Emma, would you please make a video about correct way of baby wrap carrying of a newborn? I have found different videos specifically about newborns, some with feed tucked in under their bums, some with feet out in M shape. Thank you 🙏🏻
Hi @S thanks for the suggestion! For healthy hip development it is best to have the legs out in an M shape not wrapped so they are straight or touching or underneath their bottom. Hope that helps!

I have a question. My son is a premature and his corrected month is 6. He rolls onn the side , reach out toys and every thing, his hands are open when he is playing. When i give him toys he takes it. But when is relaxing his hands are closed ans open sometimes. Should I be worried that his hands closed or its normal that . .its closed sometimes.
Hi @T generally I would only be concerned if your son was unable to open his hands to grasp a toy. If they remained fisted all the time then it would be a concern. However, given that when your son plays with toys he is able to open his hands and hold the toy and interact with it I wouldn't be concerned. As always though if you are concerned pop into your son's doctor, as they can see your son in person and complete an assessment.

My 2 month old doesn’t like staring at these pictures anymore and she stopped swatting at her hanging toys to stare at her feet and kick a noisy toy two weeks ago. What can I do to get her swatting again? She will hold a toy briefly if I put it in her hand (even tries to put it in her mouth) but she doesn’t grab for toys. She 11 weeks today
Hi @Sarah Lyon I would try not to worry. I do find that when babies learn a new skill they tend to want to practice that skill over and over and stop doing other activities. It just sounds like your little one has discovered her feet and her ability to control them and she is enjoying exploring this skill. It is great she can hold a toy briefly when it is placed in her hands. I expect with time (so in a few days/a week) she will start reaching with her hands again to bat toys. Also reaching out and grabbing for toys is a skill expected at 4 months of age so your little one still has lots to time to develop this skill. I do have this video on how to encourage a bub to use their hands if you do want to try something in the mean time.
