Just did this repair this morning. Very easy. 10mm socket with an extension and a flathead screw driver is all you need. @@Tomsfoolery. IK that you posted this video 7 years ago, but I noticed this was a comment that you responded to less than a year ago, so I’m hoping that you can still see & reply to my comment. I have a 2014 Equinox that dies 45-60 secs after first starting it. This can happen anywhere from 1-3 times in a row, so I always try to wait until it stops sputtering & make sure that it continues to idle at around 1k rpm’s for at least a minute, before I put it in drive. I have this issue about 1 out of every 10 times when starting it. This is the order of how it all started… 1. It was running fine. 2. Filled up gas tank & around 8 miles later, the CEL came on, but engine still seemed fine. Thought maybe I didn’t tighten gas cap, but it too was fine. 3. Went to O’reilly’s & had code/s ran & it pulled a P0420…”Replace catalytic converter/s.” (Which imo is not one of the codes I wanted to see.) -Could my engine sputtering & dying be caused by a clogged converter? You can either stop here or continue reading.- 4. It continued to run fine for about 6 months & CEL had even gone off there for a while, but then it came on again, so I took it back to have code/s ran again & it was a P0420 again. 5. Then about a month later is when I started having the issue of it sputtering & dying on me. 6. I tried CataClean, but that didn’t work. 7. Then I spent the whole weekend last week watching DIY YT videos on how to diagnose & fix it yourself, since I don’t have the $$$ to have it diagnosed & repaired by mechanics. 8. Leaning more towards my exhaust system, I first tried to check it for leaks, so I tried the duct taping a leaf blower in the exhaust while using a spray bottle filled with dish soap & water trick, which I didn’t even do, bc as soon as I crawled under my Equinox, I felt air blowing towards me & that’s when I noticed that my resonator was cracked along the seam, which is apparently typical with Equinox’s. However, I never saw anyone with the same crack in their resonators having any problems with theirs sputtering & dying. 9. I still decided to try to temporarily fix it myself anyways by trying the sanding the cracked area, wetting it down & applying fireplace mortar trick, which I was very thorough in doing. Since I live in SW Iowa, it gets pretty cold at night rn, so I propped up a heat gun & pointed it towards the mortar, rotating it every hour for about 6 hours, all while making sure I didn’t have it too close, if you know what I mean. 10. After letting the mortar set for about 24 hours, I decided to start it up. It ran a lot quieter, but after about 45 secs, it still died on me. 11. Yesterday, I decided to get back under it again to check the exhaust up towards the converters this time, and since it was very cold out, I just went ahead & started it up & then checked for any white colored fog/smoke from the converters & O2 sensors, but didn’t see any. Again, will having a clogged converter cause the engine to sputter & die, or could the exhaust leak that I had ran back up thru the converters, causing it to throw off my upstream O2 sensor to give improper readings, which then messed up either the PCV, MAF, fuel injectors, spark plugs, or VVTs? Sorry for the lengthy comment, but every website I went on wanted to charge me $$$ to ask these questions.
With zero mechanical ability I was extremely hesitant to do this type of job, but I was annoyed with my car stalling several times a day, and decided what better thing to do on a Sunday afternoon. Probably watched your video about 15 times and it took me a good hr or so to do it, but I just finished up and took the Equinox for a spin and no issues and the car has more power. A big THANKS man for the video. Keep kicking butt
This is an awesome video, my daughter took her 2012 equinox to mechanic that wanted $100 in front just to diagnose the problem, she called me I told her forget about it. Then I found you and the rest is history. Thank you for being there making it easy. 🤗
Wife called me this morning and said the equinox began to turn off on her in traffic as she attempted to accelerate. After running a error code reader, it ended up being this exact issue. Followed your advice and now car work great...Thank you so much brother.
Thank you for this video! My parents car was having this issue and I just fixed it for them! They are pretty impressed with their mechanic daughter! Lol.
Thank you for making this video! I just completed this repair, thanks to your video. Only differrence is my Equinox never got a code. It was noisy at the valves for months and I couldnt figure out why, started having a random issue starting up once in a blue moon, then it had a very rough idle, then suddenly last night it shut off at a stop on the drive home with the family and this morning it would start then shut right back off. I also changed the spark plugs & cleaned out the intake manifold while I was there because it was time. Great video! Repair only cost me $146 bucks with autoparts store pickup. I am now subscribed to your channel, great content!

Thanks ... did exactly as you showed in video and after getting those pesky electrical connections off (2015 Equinox) everything went back together. Was fortunate to purchase ones with Intake / Exhaust marked on them as well. Did disconnect battery just to be careful. Figure you probably saved me $200 + from what dealer would of charged.
Even the color of the car is the same. I googled 2011 equinox stalls. Watched the video and it sounded like the problem. Couldn’t get the car into the shop because they were backlogged. I thought I’d take a chance, parts were about $109. It seems to run fine now. Saved $$$ and I look good in the wife’s eyes. (Well, I always look good but this helps against my “toys” purchases).
In my mind before even knowing what was wrong i knew it was gonna be a pain in the neck but your video showed me how simple it is to knock this out and not have to break my bank account trying to hire someone else or even worse have the dealership do it. Thanks a lot

Okay, I'm feeling pretty good right now. I fixed my own car! Thank you so much! Just knowing what the diagnoses codes mean helped me get the right help.
I was worried those codes on my gmc terrain were the result of a failing timing chain but replacing the intake solenoid fixed it. Thank you so much for this detailed video saved me a bunch of trouble and money.

Mystery Oil Leak Up top: I don't know if this is a common issue, but my son just bought a 2010 Malibu, with an Ecotec, almost identical to this, except for airbox I believe. It had a pretty severe oil leak from up top and PS somewhere, and I assumed it was a valve cover gasket. After a couple of looks and a quick run of the valve cover bolts to see if any had lost torque, I got to looking closer, and the well around the solenoids was full of oil, as were the tops of the coil packs on the PS side of the engine. On closer inspection, the head was missing from the intake solenoid retaining bolt. The threaded portion was still in place, O ring still on it. The only thing holding it in place was the o-ring. Amazing it was still running I got a small electronic screwdriver and was able to tease out the stud portion of the broken bolt. I replaced the bolt and the problem is fixed.
2017 Equinox, 110,000 and lost all my oil! Had the engine and transmission gasket replaced. No trouble afterwords. Mechanic said could be major issues had several same car, continued oil issues. Check oil after every drive. Had oil change done after 3,000 miles, and now it stalls! Going to try these two solenoid changes. Love my car, hate the problems!
Santer, your fix with the solenoids...TERRIFIC! Thank you! Did it and it runs great again! My oil problem is "stalled" for now, still check it every day to ensure it is ok. But, if you hear of any class action law suits, please let me know. I have only found one, and it is old. Agree, this is a problem Chevy has known about and should have fixed and could have fixed.
I just replaced both, my equinox was stalling out when I put it in reverse, 2012 year. Solved the problem, the parts were 50$ each at O'Reilly's.. thanks for the video!!!

Mine just did This today. Order the parts. Thank u for the videos.. My Code was P0010. 2014 Chevy Equinox. I don't know why this happened though. Only 30 k miles on it and get the oil serviced and changed at the dealer all the time. I just had my 30k service and Oil changed 2 weeks ago. After I fix it I'm trading it in for a 2019.. I don't like promblems with a Car with that less of miles on it
Scrap To Cash **** Living the Dream**** same here but mine is a 2013 30k miles changed my oil three weeks ago at the dealership I wonder if they are breaking shit on purpose
I love this video. I live in Michigan and we don't have a garage to do this in. It's snowy af. But my moms car keeps stalling so I think I'm about to help her fix it.
@@Tomsfoolery. The repair worked. Car running smooth, and reset the engine warning light. I've always kept my oil changes up to date. BTW, I traded the car in yesterday for a 2020 equinox. 4K miles on it. I had 165K on my 2015, so we figured it was time to move on to a newer model before it started to Nickle and Dime me. BTW, there was very little trash on the screens. I think it was an electronic issue with either one of them. I replaced both of them to fix it.
Thanks for the video, definitely help me and many. Two errors in your work. 1. Should have placed a rag on the intake manifold that's right in front of you and 2. should have returned the oil cap before any work started. Reason I say that is because with my luck, I probably would drop a socket in the intake and then I am screwed!
Having stalling issues but no dummy lights and just had the fuel pump changed had oil in my fuel cost $700 still stalling would low oil or oil change help?😊
Is there a way to stop it from dying im gonna take it to the shop cause it’s under warranty but but until then because it dies at the most random times
I changed the VVT solenoid and the camshaft sensor. I still have the p0011 code. I was told the timing chain is the issue if the VVT solenoid and camshaft sensor have been changed....do you think so? It's a 2015 equinox
Actually, worst case scenario would be the chain skipping, pistons hitting valves and breaking the rockers (cam followers) along with bent valves. I have a ‘14 Terrain in my garage with that issue currently!
trying to replace this solenoid. accidentally broke the connector on top (for intake one, with blue ring inside). where to get the replacement and what is the part number to search?

Man pay them whatever it was to read the code. Usually 50 to 90 dollars. Even if you are not mechanically talented the way he breaks it down makes it very easy. If you can create a dish from a recipe you can do this! Have faith and take life by the horns when it throws you curve balls and knock em out of the park! 10o bucks for the part and 15 minutes of my time. Wife called me stranded at work, stressing for a rental. I got the part, installed it and made it back to my job on time all in my lunch break. You can do it homie!
Will this code trigger "Limp home" mode? My 2011 2.4L. is showing 010 and 011, after being parked at work for 8 hr shift, came out to go home and no reverse and only 2nd gear forward, top speed 20 mph. Fluid levels good, no puddles on ground, ran code scanner, 010 ( timing retarder) and 011 ( transmission communication issue).. cleared the codes, still no reverse and only second gear forward works, and both codes returned. Any ideas?

@@Matt-xs4vs I was just wondering how many miles your equinox has on it

Mystery Oil Leak Up top:
I don't know if this is a common issue, but my son just bought a 2010 Malibu, with an Ecotec, almost identical to this, except for airbox I believe.
I’ve noticed that almost every equinox I come across has oil consumption issues! Way too common on these!
Worked like a charm. Same code and same easy fix. Woo Hoo!!!
Awesome!
I just replaced both, my equinox was stalling out when I put it in reverse, 2012 year. Solved the problem, the parts were 50$ each at O'Reilly's.. thanks for the video!!!
I love your channel man!!🔧🔧
Thank you very much Mr Santer..!!! This repair video helped me diagnose & fix my sons 2013 equinox in a matter of minutes..!!
Thk's again repair was simple after watching the video..!!
I had this problem with my 14 Equinox. I go to my local repair shop, they tell me it's a 3.5 HOUR REPAIR. WHAAAAAT?? So, I get the intake Solenoid for 48.00 and in 30 minutes, job done, no CEL, smooth running engine. Thanks!!!!
Awesome, save your money!
Thank you so very much!!! I saved $500 for 30min of work because of this video. Thank you again!!
Thanks for the video i did this all on my own with your help of course
You are the man took 15 min saved me an arm and a leg
That’s awesome! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this. Helped me save some $$ and not be without my car for a while.
That’s good to hear! Thanks for watching!
Scrap To Cash **** Living the Dream**** I'm having the issue now...2014 Chevy equinox...sorry vehicle..
2014 equinox 65,000 miles. exhaust failed. intake was good, but changed them both.
I love this video. I live in Michigan and we don't have a garage to do this in. It's snowy af. But my moms car keeps stalling so I think I'm about to help her fix it.
How did it go
Thank you. Just had to do it on my equinox. Took me an hour lol. Couldn't get the clips off lol...
Thanks so much for your video. It explains everything perfectly. 30 minutes from start to finish including 15 minutes to pick up parts.
We fixed up ours using this video. Thanks a ton!
Replaced all 4 sensors(intake ,exhaust, cam, crank) and it ran great. The trouble code came back and will barely idle.
Still dirty?
FYI we just had this repair done at the Chevrolet dealership Pennsylvania and the cost for us was $278 and took about an hour
Thanks man!Your video was a money saver.Replaced both in no time It's running great. I immediately subscribed. Thanks again!
Congratulations! A very useful RUclips video. Well done!
If you have spark to the plugs and 55psi to the fuel rail but a no start, would that likely be these vvt solenoids of timing chain?
Yes. The valve timing can cause the vehicle to not start or run if it gets too far out. These engines are common for needing new timing chains often.
Thank you I hope this helps me out this happened to me yesterday twice
Just fixed mine but needed the ac delco sensors from chevy dealer autozone ones didn’t work!!! True story!!!
I have that code pop up today with me. 2015 Equinox. I'm going to order those two pieces today. Hope it works.
Make sure your oil level is where it should be and stay current on oil changes.
Thank you so much for this. Instantly fixed the problem!
That’s good news!! Thanks for watching!
Super helpful and super simple! Thank you!!!
I’m having the same issue with stalling but my check engine light isn’t coming on so no codes.
Me too did you fix that
Did it shake on stops mine shakes bad only when you stop could it be that or engine failer or oil filter clogged up
Thanks for the video, definitely help me and many. Two errors in your work. 1. Should have placed a rag on the intake manifold that's right in front of you and 2. should have returned the oil cap before any work started. Reason I say that is because with my luck, I probably would drop a socket in the intake and then I am screwed!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback!
Having stalling issues but no dummy lights and just had the fuel pump changed had oil in my fuel cost $700 still stalling would low oil or oil change help?😊
Is there a way to stop it from dying im gonna take it to the shop cause it’s under warranty but but until then because it dies at the most random times
Replacing these would that have anything to do with the timing belt stretching?
Great job on this informative video. Now I know more about what I'm about to do. Many thanks.
I changed the VVT solenoid and the camshaft sensor. I still have the p0011 code. I was told the timing chain is the issue if the VVT solenoid and camshaft sensor have been changed....do you think so?
It's a 2015 equinox
Yes. Unfortunately the timing chain and camshaft phasers are common failures. It’s best to replace everything at the same time.
@@Tomsfoolery. thanks...worst case scenario smh
Actually, worst case scenario would be the chain skipping, pistons hitting valves and breaking the rockers (cam followers) along with bent valves. I have a ‘14 Terrain in my garage with that issue currently!
@TomsFoolery sheesh yeah I don't want that lol
I do not have codes and mines stalling when I step on gas to go forward and the transmission image is now showing, and suggestions.
trying to replace this solenoid. accidentally broke the connector on top (for intake one, with blue ring inside). where to get the replacement and what is the part number to search?
Did you ever figure out the part? I did the same thing
Excellent video bro. Took me less than an hr to fix the problem. Thank you.
Thanks, very helpful video, straight to the point.. no BS.. pretty sure it exactly what i need to do to fix my crapy equinox, so i can get rid of it.. what a piece of trash
Hi. Is this has to do in part with stability track issue?
Thanks
Thank you for the video! Worked like a charm
Good deal! Thanks for watching!
Any tips on how to get the freaking plastic tips off?! Mine won’t budge. Do you turn it or lift it or turn and lift ? I’m afraid to pull too hard.
What are these I’m buying.? I have a 2015 Equinox stalling out on me too like at red lights and when I’m turning to park. Anything basic under 1RPM I’m stalling. Have been putting it in neutral to help save it but yeah pretty sure this is my issue. Help lol
Timing solenoids
Thanks for the video...saved me money. This also worked on my son's Pontiac 2008 G5 GT. Same engine.
Thanks for looking at the connectors and saying they are each unique so you can't switch them
No problem! Thanks for watching!
I broke the plastic plugs that snap on to the solenoids. Can I replace the plastic plug or the whole thing?
what did you end up doing?
I did the same thing... Went to part store ordered the connector simple fix. Just be sure to tell them if it's the intake or the exhaust connector...
@@BiGGK10 I broke both of them trying to remove them. I ended up just zip tying them and taping them. How much were the plastic "pig tails"?
I ended up zip tying it as well. Worked. 👍
What where the signs it was messing up. Just dieting or did it sometimes studded
Do you know if it would be okay to change the oil while doing this repair as well? It shouldn’t hurt anything right
Very helpful. I've only worked on Non computer vehicles. Thanks
Yep my Buick Verano was throwing a P0011 code and needed a grey top input cam sensor and took all of 5 minutes to replace
Wat if the solenoid's break off flush with the motor seriously, like both of them . is there a special pair of needle nose for that?
I’ve never ran into that scenario. Did that happen to you?
2015 equinox, followed the video (quite easy) and the codes immediately came back on.
Vehicle runs so smooth but check engine light is on.
Frustrating, our Chevy dealer is closed due to Covid-19 and is now out of inspection.
Does anybody have any idea why the codes are still on?
Thanks for the video 🙏 my car is going thru this at the moment I got to learn something new and save some money too thanks man
Great video, problem is not having the machine to tell u what the problem is, i just found out from pepboys that this is what i needed, but since i am not me hanically encline, i couldn't tell on my own that this was the problem i was having. Gonna pay $500 for the repair.
Great video though.
@@michaelreese8211 yeah, i should have done that, after the fact i realozed that i could have done it myself, next time i will do that.
Any ideas?
Hey I just replaced mine after the CEL cam on. But I’m getting a sputter and it does die when I hit the gas from a stop. Any idea
Replaced both of mine and 2014 Equinox STILL stalls when cold only. (Dealer did all work & are now puzzled and getting impatient with the vehicle saying "we cant rent you a car forever."
Thankyou so much for this video. I was freaking out! You are the man!
Hi have you had the shaking issue at stop light? Has it been solved ?
Thank god ur amazing I’m doing this in the morning
What if the is no code being sent. How did you know it was that.
I do this and reset , but the problem is back what can I do ?
You likely have a stretched timing chain. You would need to change out the timing chain to fix the issue.
