I think Hawaii is definitely a lifestyle that a certain personality would love. Plus the money factor… we have a lot of friends who left California and couldn’t afford to return once they sold because they didn’t have the money to come back. Living in LA, again I think the only thing that makes me feel pause is the fact that you can only get community hospitals on most islands and Oahu is the only island with a level one trauma center if you or your family member get really sick. And transfer to the trauma center for critical care isn’t going to happen if your not stable. Eating fast food wouldn’t work for me. And ooooh Trader Joe’s!!! Lol. But you have the best sushi!
When I was a teenager I was living on the streets in LA. Then I got sober and became a nurse and case manager. I love how you give people back their dignity by acknowledging their not homeless but “house less”… thanks for that. We are all people. Many are in hard times.

Last year we sold our 100 year old, 1200 sq ft California home and bought a home in great shape, twice the size, on an acre of land south of Hilo, 1/2 mile from the ocean, and have money left over. We have been able to add a full solar/battery system which we power our electric vehicle with, so we don't have to deal with the high prices for power and gasoline. We're happy to eat at home and are enjoying discovering the foods, native to Hawaii, that we never knew in California. We find the weather to be very mild. You're also correct that deliveries are not as quick. We've learned patience. Hawaii probably isn't a great place to live if you're in a hurry. I'm not in a hurry. When we wanted a dishwasher, Home Depot took 2 months to get it in. When they delivered it, they would not install it. I had to hire a different guy to install and take away the old dishwasher. I'm not sure what this guy is talking about regarding the lack of fresh food. Here in Puna, there are farmers markets and veggie vendors all over the place. There's a crew of guys who ocean fish and sell their stuff on the roadside and it's the best fish I've ever had.

I'm from upstate NY and just got back from Oahu. I'd heard horror stories about the traffic there, but I didn't think it was bad at all compared to our midsize cities like Rochester and Syracuse. And outside the cities, you might move more slowly toward a destination on Oahu, but it takes the same amount of time to get somewhere here because you have to drive through farmland for 30 minutes to get there. The driving seemed pretty comparable to here... and there's no snow.

You’re going to miss weddings, funerals, all of it because you can’t afford to get there and it takes too long. You’re going to be very lonely in HI because all of your people are elsewhere.

I wrote down my expenses (everything I purchased) then compared them to SF prices. Hawaii is about 5-8% more than San Francisco. Hopefully one day soon we move for the kids to go to university. She can’t get used to the temperatures here living in Canada, even though we are in the Westcoast with the mildest weather. My house needs to be a sauna because of her! 🤣
Couple things I noticed (in the Northshore at least) is nobody honks. You can make a U turn right on Kam hwy and locals are patient, give em a Shaka, get one back, and be on your way. Also people pull over to pee right off the side of the road. 🤣

About a year ago I asked my brother to send me newspaper ads for rental apartments because I wanted to go back home to live in retirement. My monthly net income is 4500 a month. He told me I don’t make enough money to live there unless I live with friends or relatives. That’s depressing.

Back in the 80's my best friend and I had delusional dreams of grandeur about moving to Hawaii together after high school graduation to be roomies. No internet back then, so we snail-mailed a letter to the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce (?), and got back a form letter stating "Welcome to Paradise! If you plan to move here, please make sure you budget air fare back home." It wasted no time telling us that people move to Hawaii all the time without being realistic, and get stuck there. I'm was born and raised in hawaii. My father married my mother(native Hawaiian) and he was a pilot in the airforce for 32 years on Oahu. Two years ago, I moved to Virginia(Virginia has more military bases than any other state, except California) which has all the same kind of people(micronesians, japanese, chinese, hawaiians(me included), tungans and somoans. The gas price, just yesterday, was $3.89 a gallon as of Saturday April 30, 2022. Some places were $4.09 a gallon in northern Virginia. Virginia is highly racially diverse, even more so than Hawaii; especially when you include the large amount of 'african' americans in Virginia which hawaii simply don't have except for the military sector. I thought about moving back to my native island of Oahu, but things are way too good here in Virginia and I see no rational, emotional or logical reason to move back to my native island of Oahu. But, I do like your video and I gave you a big thumbs up my brodda...as a side note; we have a Trader Joes(down the road in Manassas, Virginia), a major Amazon warehouse a short driving distance away, a Publix which is about a 5 minute drive from me and everything in between those two. In the past few months, I've spoken to many hawaiians, who are both here in Virginia for the military as well as those hawaiians, micronesians and somoans who moved here over 5 years ago from both Maui and Oahu !! They all have the same mentality and have seen a huge change in their lives and have actually experienced more wealth abundance as well as an overabundance of opportunities here in Virginia. The cost of living is 'stupid' low...lol...Most, as usual, do miss the islands of course, but they know that what they have here could never be had in Hawaii at the cost and prices that they paid here in Virginia. I've been all up and down the east coast, including Nebraska(Omaha) and all of the south, including New Orleans. Virginia is the 'original' state of the 13 colonies and has a great abundance of history. Believe it or not, we do have hawaiian feast and Luau festivities. This goes without saying that Hawaii is NOT a place, it's a people and where the people go, they can create a new hawaii with them😁

However, the pace in Oahu is more of my style and the weather is more agreeable to me. Comparing the cost of living between Seattle and Honolulu is pretty darn close. Maybe our gas prices are "slightly" lower than yours. I was in Oahu in May 2022 and I was comparing food prices and the cost of eating out with what I pay here in Seattle. Not much difference really. Well, I don't have a cockroach issue and those beasties really creep me out. Moving to Oahu is still on my bucket list. Mahalo for this video!

Me and wife wants to move to O'ahu really badly (we're from San Francisco) .. this coming October to be exact butttt... our main problem is that we don't have a job waiting for us there and we don't know if there's any place over there that would accept "advance rent payment" ... because we could afford a 6 months worth of rent to be paid in advance if someone is willing to accept that... any advice is much appreciated.. The locals in Hawaii do not want us there. We drive up the prices for everything and have ruined their land. Nothing we can do about it now. If you want to live in a beautiful tropical climate. Check out the Philippines. They speak English it is taught in schools. There are thousands of Americans fleeing the United States for the Philippines living off just their social security $1,700 a month. The great thing about the Philippines is the locals will welcome you instead of trying to manipulate you by putting up videos on RUclips. Thousands of people are fleeing Hawaii now because it's impossible to survive off of social security in Hawaii. 😎

I have no driver's license, so no car. I don't want a house! I'm an Aunty from the mainland, East coast, New York City, which is not perfect either but I love it! I would much prefer an apartment, I'm used to traffic and the time it might take to get from here to there. I Love Hot weather! I am a Summer person! I vacationed there in May of 2014 and will most definitely want to vacation there again, probably a couple more times before I would consider moving permanently. What I might, maybe, consider more is just having a vacation place? I know there is no Trader Joe's [ insert sad face emoji ] Isn't there a Costco? I've seen videos. They might not have the highest end stuff but don't they have decent quality stuff? Thank you for this video and the honest, straightforward information. There is a big huge difference between visiting somewhere in "vacation mode" to actually living someplace on a daily basis having to deal with everyday life. I fell in love with the 50th state and I so hope to maybe vacation there again in the next couple of years, maybe in 2023, maybe in 2024. Mahalo, and Aloha !!

My family is from Hawai’i, however my parents moved to California in 1964, I wasn’t born yet. I spent many summers on the Big Island and I love the old ways. I still live in California, however I would love to move to Hawai’i. California has higher or equal gas prices. I would prefer to live on the Big Island, I like the slower life; however healthcare is my main concern and then prices.
Why I want to move back? The people, I love the aloha. Grated it’s not the same as when I was a kid runner around Hilo, however it’s still better than anywhere else. Ok, I hear Japan is pretty nice. The handshake and hugging. My Hawai’i friends (mostly parents from Hawai’i), we still do this. Makes you feel closer to each other, you know. I know a lot of my friends have brought up their kids that same way. There’s more great about Hawai’i imo, the negatives are mostly monetary and healthcare. One of my friends, his mom is from BI too, he wants to live on the BI 6 months and California 6 months when he retires.

Foodland, WholeFoods and the Markets are great for doing groceries. Who needs Trader Joe’s? 😉 I did read somewhere that Amazon wants to build a warehouse in Hawaii. I guess in the future Amazon will be able to deliver faster. I use Instacart a lot, due to health issues what made me housebound and half of the time bedridden. I did realize that there are not that many restaurants in Hawaii that serve healthy food. I don't miss Trader Joe's in the slightest, there are plenty of alternatives. You left out the bugs, but have a separate video for that. Living here you have to fight them, just another inconvenience. You left out anti-haole-ism. It's real. If you mispronounce a word, it is considered that you just make a mistake, but that you disrespected their heritage. That's not respectful of YOU, they are disrespecting YOU, not the other way around.
