    Simple and straight to the point.
    What many other channels forget is that the majority of us live/work in an urban environment and when stuff hits the fan, we just need something to get home.
    Another option for the backpack is the Tenba Fulton series, these are hybrid camera bags with a rolltop, giving more space when needed but being very discrete in everyday use.

    Great video, FINALLY someone who uses gear in a way that makes sense, like using one knife only and not having 2 backpacks and 8 pouches. Also, that mini ceramic blade is very cool. Can you describe better how you proceeded to make it? Or link to a video, I couldnt find the channel you were referring to when talking about it. Thanks

    • @AlexWander
      @AlexWander  Год назад +5

      Thanks man! Glad we agree on that!
      It's pretty simple, since these ceramic blades have edged on both sides, when you have one just take a piece of Gorilla Tape 1 cm width and wrap it around of one of the two edges . Doing so you won't cut yourself and you will save a new sharpen edge for future uses 🤙

    Good video, I'm looking forward to watching more!
    I have carried a folding knife for self defense for years. It's for emergencies, so I don't use it for anything else. Side note: I also carry it on my support side, in case I need help defending my firearm, which is worn strong side. Consequently, I effectively don't usually have a blade for every day use. There are some Chinese knock offs of some spiderco blades that weigh next to nothing. Recently I've started carrying one of those as a beater knife that I don't feel bad about using for normal knife stuff.
    I also have the Hiker version of a Swiss Army Knife, it's a version with a Phillips head screw driver instead of a corkscrew. I couldn't find a comfortable way to carry it for a long time because I hate the way knives without pocket clips end up sideways at the bottom of your pocket. Then I found a small pocket clip that attaches to the D ring of the knife. It makes carrying a Swiss Army Knife a lot more comfortable on a daily bases. I have a heavy duty straight pin stuck in the hole made for that purpose, and a small fero rod that replaces the toothpick. The Hiker is only 2 layers, so it's very comfortable worn in jean pockets with the pocket clip. Somtimes I carry a 3 layer version (forget the name) which has a saw blade. For EDC, I think a SAK version of two, and no more than 3 layers, with scissors makes a lot of sense. But I love the screwdriver option. The awl is really useful for cutting the heavy plastic on clam packed items. I luckily had my SAK at recent party for my granddaughter. I was the only one there with a pocket knife, let alone a screwdriver. Thus I became the designated toy package opener and battery inserter. The tools are surprisingly functional and well made on legit Swiss Army Knives, which surprised me since I had a cheap copy of one when in Scouts. The knife blade is decent quality, but nothing special by today's standards set by super steels. But then it's also very easy to touch up or resharpen with an inexpensive whetstone. And the Hiker model costs less than $25!
    When I'm fishing, hunting, or in the woods, I really prefer a multi-tool with pliers and wire cutters. Leatherman tools seem to have very high quality metal files. But then we're talking something that's best worn on a belt sheath.
    I've been thinking of buying a belt with a hidden pocket built in to carry a little extra cash, a laminated copy of my driver's license, and a ceramic, single edged razor blade. The ceramic blade that I have has a metal backside like all single edged blades. So a metal detector would still find it, but the sharp part won't rust like regular blades eventually do. But you can buy several dozen regular blades for the same price, so that probably wasn't the best purchase I ever made. We had a ceramic paring knife recently break. I saved the blade thinking that I might use it, shorten it, or modify it somehow.
    I am almost always pretty close to my vehicle, even while working, so I have a lot of useful things in my vehicle that I don't feel the need to carry on my person. And I live in a Constitutional Carry State in the U.S. Knives are also unregulated, so blade length and locking features aren't restricted.
    If you are going to carry a note pad AND a plastic stabby thing, then IMO, a high quality metal or tactical pen seems more worthwhile, and more subtle.
    I have a lock picking set, but I'm not good enough to make carrying it worthwhile. I need to practice more, and at least have it in my vehicle.

      This is a true in depth sharing! I thank you so much for the time taken to write all of this! It seems that we are all in a constant trial and error kind a process but I think this what define us as a true passionate about "self reliance"
      By the way , I made my self defence tool that I called Mr. I DON’T KNOW made out of micarta because, tactical pens , kubotans and related stuff get you screwed in my country, I wanted something helpful but that cannot be recognized as a self defense tool by the police 🤷‍♂️ we cannot even carry a gun in our country 😁

    • @yellowdog762jb
      @yellowdog762jb 11 месяцев назад

      @@AlexWander Thanks for the compliment. I really can't imagine not being allowed to carry a firearm, a pocket knife, or even a pen. Tactically it might not be a sound decision, but it's legal in Texas to open carry a rifle or pistol. However, virtually everyone that carries does so concealed though. Knives are unregulated. The only places that you are likely to be mugged or assaulted are in big cities, where the corrupt district attorneys and judges let violent criminals come and go through a revolving door. Many of the city folks are bleeding heart liberals that the predators feed upon. Outside of the big cities, you don't have to work much.
      Luckily, we have something called the Castle Doctine in effect. If you are in your home or anywhere else where you have the legal right to be, you have the right to defend yourself if you are attacked. I'm not sure how any society thinks it is logically okay that law abiding citizens have to give way to criminals. If a criminal doesn't want to end up injured or dead, it's simple, don't attack other people. It's no different than deciding not to step out in front of a moving bus.
      I have thought some about what type of items one could legally carry on an airplane that would be effective self defense items. That's a discussion for a different, and more private forum. 😉
      Anyway, keep up the good work, your videos are very good!

    I've streamlined my EDC to be very minimal in bulk but also still useful.
    I have an alpaka zip pouch pro that I use as a wallet for cards and cash, it also holds a fisher space pen, a Civivi Ki-V knife, a Rovyvon A8 flashlight, a Go-Comb for my beard, a toothpick, a hair tie, a fresnel lens, a small med kit with: one fabric bandaid, alcohol pad, triple antibiotic, safety pin, bill's sliver gripper(best micro tweezers ever), benadryl, ibuprofen, immodium. Although it sounds like a lot its actually very minimal in size, I hate bulk filled pockets. I also carry a fixed blade horizontally near my belt buckle, I cycle through a few different ones. I have the civivi Ki-V in my wallet for small tasks so I dont have to pull a larger knife out in public. Then I have a key fob for my vehicle on a lanyard that hangs out of my pocket so I dont lose it, a black bandana I keep in my back pocket, and last but not least I conceal carry a Glock 19.
    In my car I keep a "get home". bag or whatever you want to call it, with body armor panel, trauma and first aid kit, water, stable food, leatherman surge multitool, flashlight, 10 inch prybar, knipex boltcutter, silcock key, bic lighter, portable battery charger, window breaker, gloves, matador pocket blanket, extra ammo, and a lightweight sun/boonie hat thing.

    I have two layers on me as well. On person I carry the usual cellphone, wallet, keys and pocket knife and a firearm. Then in my smaller chest sling I’ll carry a multi tool, flashlight, notepad and pen, some bandaids, a tourniquet and quik clot gauze, a connectivity kit that can charge my phone to whatever is around plus a charging cable. That’s it. I keep it relatively as small as possible because the bigger the bag the more I’d carry and then it’d be heavy and I wouldn’t carry eventually. Took me awhile to narrow it down, but in most scenarios I’d be covered.

    • @AlexWander
      @AlexWander  Год назад +1

      It took years for me too to narrow down all my set ups. It take time but it worths the effort. Your kit is well thought out and it covers most of our needs for sure! Bu the way , do you also carry the chest sling in a urban scenario or is it just for outdoors?

    • @Phlfwlr
      @Phlfwlr Год назад

      @@AlexWander it’s actually primarily urban. I have a separate pack for outdoors with different tools better for those sorts of tasks. Not necessarily a “Bugout” bag, but it could be because I’ve always got certain things in there that I could use.

      I have the exact same thing as you do.
      I see my 'emergency' set up as 5 layers:
      Same basic edc as yours, same sling as yours (you should throw compeeds in the mix, can really save your feet), a 25L backpack I can work from and with which I travelled extensively the world with that can carry a few clothes, toilettries, a sarong, my passeports, a book and my computer, hard drive and earbuds and some cash.
      This is usually with me, at the hotel or at my place. Then I have a duffel bag in either my car, sailboat or cessna with outdoor stuff in it. If need may be, I can just throw all the unecessary urban stuff from my backpack in it and just put whatever outdoor thing I need to the backpack and go extensively off greed.
      This duffel bag is supposed to bring me either to my home, to my safe deposit boxes, my storage units, or my couple bug out hides in nature that lead to a secondary off grid home depending on the situation.

    In my pocket all I carry is my phone, my swiss army knife [unless i'm out and about in which case it's in my backpack], wallet (including a fresnel lens), a magnifier, (I have close to no near vision) and a micro flashlight. But my most used item is a small pry tool (gerber shard) which I use in a 'claw' fashion to open pull tab cans, rip through the fabric tape of delivery boxes, etc. My finger nails are damaged by health conditions so can't use my nails like most people can ... hence the shard. My backpack on the other hand is quite loaded. A water bottle, USB battery, charger, laptop, bluetooth mouse, prescription meds for a couple of days in case I can't make it home, headlamp, face masks (immunocompromised), hand and surface wipes, lip balm, eye drops, three pairs of glasses (eyes again), another magnifier, fountain pens and some stationery, and two folded fabric bags in case I drop by the shops on my way home.

    Instead of superglue, they sell wound closure strips. Steri-strips is a brand here in the US, so im not sure of names in other countries, but they pack flat and very light. Some large finger bandages, a couple patch bandages, some single use bacitracin to prevent infection, and your set for most situations.

    I like that your gear is _actually_ focused on things you use rather than on things that round out some "capability" chart you won't use. It doesn't matter to me if someone wants to carry big workhorse tools or compact (and expensive) ultralight fancy tools, IMO if you're not actually *using* it, why the hell are you carrying it?
    That's why I don't carry (nor own) little Knipex pliers-everyone loves them, right? Fine tool sure, but I'm not going to carry it because I'm not going to use it often enough to bother. So in that case why not get a larger tool that is easier to use for the job and put it in my tool bag where it belongs?
    I do need to charge my phone, manage medical crap, have a good light, open boxes, open electronics, respond to minor first aid emergencies, mail an envelope, find a pen, or find some cash because I can't get to a machine right now. A SAK covers the rest of my needs because I live in the city where people are likely to call the police if I so much as mention I have a knife, referring to my Victorinox Compact. Not that the police care mind you, but I'd rather not be "accidentally" shot 57 times by the SWAT tean because I'm "known to be armed" today. 🙄
    I'm just gonna say holy shit, your not-an-ad-read for a company whose product you like has better production value than stuff that's paid for. Well freakin' done on the editing!

      @AlexWander  3 месяца назад
