    Cat owners have successfully dealt with solid waste and associated smells for decades. It is interesting that we often think human waste will defeat us when cat waste doesn't, and of course the volume is much greater, but still the technology and general know-how is readily available.

      Very true, I have a cat, two big dogs, one small dog, and 6 quails. I’m literally so used to dealing with animal dookie that my own isn’t going to scare me off that easily😂

      I sometimes sneak a shit into the cats box, which really pisses him off, but I find it to be worth the effort

    There are laws about poluting water courses. So if you're near streams or rivers it would be wise to check the legislation and planning IMHO. I use a 25 litre bucket in my compost loo and I fill it in about the same time as yours, which looks a lot smaller But I add a generous handful of sawdust after every deposit, which might account for the difference. Either that or I poo a lot!! The sawdust reduces odour dramatically. I don't use a vented system, it's in an outhouse but it's easy to install one using off the shelf pipe and a computer fan.

    • @adreenryan2901
      @adreenryan2901 6 месяцев назад

      The sawdust does make a big difference with smell but where do you dump it when full we use bog mull in a compost heap.

    Thank you. I am living off grid in East Africa. You have given me some ideas. I am having issues with my soak away as it is not soaking away. The third layer of soil is red soil usually used for building mud houses. I will relocate the pipe and dig deeper. Enjoy.

    Does soak away not contaminate the ground underneath? Is that sth you need planning permission?

    Don't put your loo poo near any water supply you may have. We had our compost bin near our aquifer and when we had the water tested there was lots of e-coli in the water sample. The report wasn't specific about the type and most is not harmful but we moved our compost corner to a different location anyway.

    Thanks for the video, it's great to see the thought process as thinking of how I would sort out a similar situation. How has it been since you've done the work - have you had any issues with it or is there anything you'd change? Thanks!

    • @offgridpath
      @offgridpath  Год назад +1

      Thanks a lot! No issues at all so far. I think there's nothing i'd change with the waste situation as everything works pretty well. I would like to have a water catchment from the roof but that doesn't really have anything to do with it! ha!

      @@HB91LDN I didn’t post with the intention of being a smart ass, but more to find out more information about this as I would like to do this if I could. From the little research I have done, it seems soakaways are illegal (I guess for environmental reasons), obviously off grid has done his very carefully and avoiding environmental damage which is great. But maybe he knows more about skirting round the law, in which case I would love to hear how. But anyway, not being judgmental or a smart ass, just curious.

    Not to be gross, but with the separette (sp?) what happens if someone is throwing up in the toilet? Either a pregnant woman in the morning, or someone undergoing chemo that throws up? Does that get composted? I guess maybe the chemo example wasn't a good sample question because you can't with that as it's chemicals.
